New technologies designed to improve the communication of autistic children can also help to promote interaction processes and cognitive and social development. The aim of this study was to analyze the instruments used to improve the communication skills of children with autism spectrum disorder. We searched the PubMed and Web of Science databases using the descriptors “autism”, “Asperger”, “education”, “children” and “assistive technology” and selected articles that met the following inclusion criteria: (i) original research; (ii) written in English; (iii) based on participants with a primary diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder; and (iv) tested an instrument designed to promote communication in children with autism spectrum disorder. Our search retrieved 811 articles, of which 34 met the inclusion criteria. Data on 26 instruments were extracted, and the measurement properties of the instruments were combined with information about their outcomes and presentation. The most commonly used interventions were the Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication Handicapped Children program and the Picture Exchange Communication System. The Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication Handicapped Children program was shown to produce improvements in the communication skills, socialization and self-care skills of children with autism spectrum disorder. The Picture Exchange Communication System produced inconsistent results. The results of the identified studies confirm the significant importance of these instruments in improving the communicative process of autistic children.

OBJECTIVE: When children participate in research protocols, consent (by a parent or legal guardian) and assent (by the children) must be given. Understanding research protocols can be challenging for an adult and even more difficult for a child. The aim of this study was to describe the development of a comic book created to facilitate children’s understanding of informed assent with clear and simple language. METHODS: Five researchers with scores above seven according to the Fehring criteria developed the comic book, avoiding the use of technical terminology. Twenty children between 7 and 12 years old, and enrolled in a larger study, responded using a Likert scale and questions about the clarity of texts and illustrations. The final version met National Health System Resolutions (Resoluções do Conselho Nacional da Saúde - CNS n° 196/1996 and 466/2012). RESULTS: The comic book assent presents a short story containing information about a real study: the invitation to participate, objectives, methods, instruments, procedures, risks, benefits, and the researchers’ contact information. Most of the participants answered that they perceived the content of the text to be “Excellent” (40%) and “Very good” (40%), and the illustrations were perceived as “Excellent” (45%) and “Very good” (55%). CONCLUSION: The construction of a simple and clear model of informed assent is possible, and this model should be used in experiments with children.

RESUMO O Transtorno do Espectro Autista (TEA) é uma desordem do desenvolvimento neurológico caracterizada principalmente por déficits na interação social, comunicação e aprendizagem de habilidades implícitas. OBJETIVO: Analisar os resultados da pesquisa sobre "aprendizagem motora" e suas formas de mensurar na "desordem autista". MÉTODOS: Uma pesquisa bibliográfica sistemática foi feita usando Medline/PubMed, Web of Science, BVS (biblioteca virtual de saúde) e PsycINFO. Incluímos artigos que mostraram as palavras-chave "autismo" e "aprendizagem motora". As variáveis consideradas foram os aspectos metodológicos; os resultados apresentados e a qualidade metodológica dos estudos. RESULTADOS: Um total de 42 artigos foram identificados; foram excluídos 33 artigos porque não atendiam aos critérios de inclusão. Os dados foram extraídos de nove estudos elegíveis e resumidos. CONCLUSÃO: Concluímos que, embora as pessoas com TEA tenham demonstrado dificuldades de desempenho em diferentes tarefas de aprendizagem motora de memória, a aquisição de habilidades ocorre nessa população; No entanto, essa aquisição de habilidades está relacionada a eventos heterogêneos, ocorrendo sem a consciência dos indivíduos.

ABSTRACT Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder primarily characterized by deficits in social interaction, communication and implicit skill learning. OBJECTIVE: To analyse the results of research on "motor learning" and the means used for measuring "autistic disorder". METHODS: A systematic literature search was done using Medline/PubMed, Web of Science, BVS (virtual health library), and PsycINFO. We included articles that contained the keywords "autism" and "motor learning". The variables considered were the methodological aspects; results presented, and the methodological quality of the studies. RESULTS: A total of 42 studies were identified; 33 articles were excluded because they did not meet the inclusion criteria. Data were extracted from nine eligible studies and summarized. CONCLUSION: We concluded that although individuals with ASD showed performance difficulties in different memory and motor learning tasks, acquisition of skills still takes place in this population; however, this skill acquisition is related to heterogeneous events, occurring without the awareness of the individual.

INTRODUÇÃO: O Declínio da função física é uma característica comum de idade avançada e tem consequências importantes em termos de saúde física e qualidade de vida. Nossa capacidade de aprendizagem motora nos permite adaptar movimentos a um ambiente em constante mudança. A expressão Realidade Virtual refere-se a uma ampla variedade de métodos usados para simular uma alternativa ao mundo virtual. OBJETIVO: Analisar os resultados apresentados em estudos anteriores sobre aprendizagem motora com o uso de Realidade Virtual em participantes idosos. MÉTODO: Para selecionar os artigos, três etapas foram seguidas. Uma revisão sistemática da literatura foi realizada sem limitação de tempo. A pesquisa foi realizada utilizando PubMed, BVS e Web os Science; considerando-se as palavras-chave, incluímos artigos que apresentaram os três seguintes termos:, realidade virtual idosos e aprendizagem motora. RESULTADOS: A busca inicial rendeu 49 artigos. Depois da remoção de duplicações, dois dos autores avaliaram independentemente o título e o resumo de cada artigo em relação aos critérios de inclusão do estudo. Destes, 45 artigos foram excluídos com base no título e resumo. Finalmente, quatro artigos preencheram os critérios de inclusão. CONCLUSÃO: Embora poucos estudos foram encontrados sobre a aprendizagem motora em pessoas idosas através da realidade virtual e, menos ainda eram de boa qualidade, foi mostrado que as pessoas idosas, com ou sem uma doença específica, podem se beneficiar de intervenções com base na realidade virtual para melhorar a habilidades de aprendizagem motora.

INTRODUCTION: Decline in physical function is a common feature of older age and has important outcomes in terms of physical health as it relates to quality of life. Our capacity for motor learning allows us to flexibly adapt movements to an ever-changing environment. The term Virtual Reality refers to a wide variety of methods used to simulate an alternative or virtual world. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the results shown in previous studies on motor learning with Virtual Reality use in elderly participants. METHOD: To select the articles, three steps were followed. A systematic literature review was performed without time limitation. The research was carried out using PubMed, BVS and Web of science; considering the keywords, we included articles that showed the following three terms: elderly, virtual reality and motor learning. RESULTS: The initial search yielded 49 articles. After duplicates were removed, two of the authors independently evaluated the title and abstract of each article against the study inclusion criteria. From these, 45 articles were excluded based on title and abstract. Finally, four articles met the inclusion criteria. CONCLUSION: Although few studies were conducted on motor learning in elderly people through virtual reality and, even fewer were of good quality, it was shown that elderly people, with or without a specific disease, can benefit from interventions based on virtual reality to improve motor learning skills.

Resumo Introdução : A sociedade atual é influenciada pelas Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação. Os brinquedos outrora construídos de forma artesanal recebem novas leituras, tornaram-se produtos altamente comercializados e neste contexto os jogos que utilizam as tecnologias de Realidade Aumentada (RA) e Realidade Virtual (RV) estão presentes no cotidiano de crianças, jovens e adultos. Objetivo : Investigar como a Educação Física no Brasil vem se apropriando dos jogos de RA e RV em seu benefício. Materiais e métodos : Foram incluídos apenas estudos que envolveram exercício físico ou atividade física com o uso dos jogos com RA ou RV. A busca ocorreu nas bases de dados Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS) e Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), utilizando os termos "realidade aumentada", "realidade virtual", exergames, Wii ou "serious games". Resultados : 19 artigos foram incluídos na revisão sistemática e o instrumento mais utilizado foi o Nintendo(r) Wii com mais de 25 tipos diferentes de jogos. Em relação aos sujeitos da pesquisa, foram quatro estudos com indivíduos hígidos (média = 65,7), três examinaram pacientes com doença de Parkinson (média = 18,0), três com idosas (média = 7,7) e dois com lesão decorrente de acidente vascular encefálico (média = 6,0). Conclusão : Os jogos que utilizam RA e RV estão presentes como ferramenta de trabalho de fisioterapeutas e terapeutas ocupacionais, utilizados principalmente para reabilitação e a produção na Educação Física no Brasil sinaliza que os jogos eletrônicos estão disponíveis e podem ser uma ferramenta com poder de contribuir com a adoção do exercício como uma forma prazerosa de lazer.

Abstract Introduction : Today's society is influenced by Information and Communication Technologies. Toys that were once built by hand have been reinterpreted and have become highly commercialized products. In this context, games using Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies are present in the everyday lives of children, youth and adults. Objective : To investigate how Physical Education professionals in Brazil have been making use of AR and VR games to benefit their work. Materials and methods : We only included studies that addressed exercise or physical activity using AR or VR games. We searched the databases of Virtual Health Library (VHL) and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), using the words augmented reality, virtual reality, exergames, Wii and serious games. Results : Nineteen articles were included in the systematic review. The most frequently used device was the Nintendo(r) Wii, with over 25 different kinds of games. With regard to the subjects of the studies, four studies were conducted with healthy individuals (mean = 65.7), three with patients with Parkinson's disease (mean = 18.0), three with elderly women (mean = 7.7) and two with patients with stroke injury (mean = 6.0). Conclusion : Many physical therapists and occupational therapists use serious games with AR or VR technologies as another work tool, especially for rehabilitation practices. The fact that these technologies are also used in Physical Education classes in Brazil indicates that electronic games are available and can be a tool that can contribute to the widespread adoption of exercise as an enjoyable form of recreation.

"Um robô para verificar a precisão da medição do tempo de reação total." A variabilidade do comportamento psicomotor e o uso de diferentes equipamentos para medidas de Tempo de Reação (TR) podem comprometer a validade e fidedignidade destas medidas. Este estudo desenvolve e valida o Emboici Robot-um robô capaz de responder a estímulos visuais com o pressionamento de um botão-para medir a precisão e acurácia das medidas de TR visual. Avaliou-se as medidas de TR em quatro ocasiões, com 300 medidas em cada uma. Estas medidas geraram um TR de 46,95ms (+6,04). Não foram encontradas diferenças significativas nos TRs obtidos pelo Emboici Robot, e os resultados demonstram evidências de que o Emboici Robot é estável, fidedigno e preciso para a obtenção de medidas de TR, podendo ser uma solução viável para verificar a precisão e acurácia de qualquer software com testes de TR simples com estímulo visual que requeira o pressionamento de um botão ou tecla para a resposta.

The level of variability in psychomotor behavior and the use of several distinct sets of equipments in Reaction Time (RT) assessments might jeopardize the validity and reliability of such measures. This study presents the development and verification of Emboici Robot-a robot capable of performing accurate RT assessments consisting of response to a visual stimulus by pressing a button-whose purpose is to measure the accuracy of RT assessments. We evaluated the accuracy and precision on four different days, each providing 300 measurements. These assessments generated a RT of 46.95ms (+6.04). No significant effects were found in the RTs obtained and, as a result, there is evidence that the Emboici Robotis stable, reliable, and precise. The robot can be a viable solution for verifying precision and accuracy of any given software with simple RT assessments with visual stimulus requiring as response the pressing of a button or key.

"Un robot de verificar la precisión de la medición del tiempo total de reacción." La variabilidad de comportamiento psicomotor y el uso de diferentes equipos para medidas de tiempo de reacción (TR) pueden poner en peligro la validez y fiabilidad de estas medidas. Este estudio desarrolla y valida Emboici Robot-capaz de responder con precisión a los estímulos visuales con sólo pulsar un botón-para medir la precisión y la exactitud de las medidas de TR visuales. Se evaluaron las medidas de TR en cuatro ocasiones, con 300 pasos cada uno. Estas medidas generaron un TR de 46,95ms (+6,04). No se encontraron diferencias significativas en los TR obtenidos por Emboici Robot. Los resultados mostraron que Emboici robot es estable, confiable y preciso para la obtención de mediciones de TR, y puede ser una solución viable para verificar la exactitud y la precisión de cualquier software con pruebas de TR con estímulo visual simple que requieren presionar un botón o clave para la respuesta.

INTRODUÇÃO: A saúde mental de atletas pode predizer seu desempenho esportivo e comportamental, o que a torna um importante objeto de estudo.OBJETIVO: Investigar a saúde mental e fatores associados em atletas que participaram dos Jogos Abertos de Santa Catarina 2011, Brasil.MÉTODOS: A amostra foi composta por 445 atletas participantes da competição (211 homens e 234 mulheres). Para a coleta de dados foi utilizado o questionário de caracterização e a escala de humor de Brunel. Os dados foram coletados individualmente no local da competição entre 30 e 50 minutos antes dos atletas competirem. Os dados foram analisados por estatística descritiva (média, frequência e percentual) e inferencial (Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Withney e correlação de Spearman com α estabelecido de 0,05).RESULTADOS: Os atletas competiram em 10 diferentes modalidades, coletivas e individuais. A maioria dos atletas cursa ou cursou o ensino médio ou superior, com mais de sete anos de tempo de prática e participação em competições nacionais e estaduais. Grande parte dos atletas teve percepção de qualidade de descanso e sono entre boa e regular durante a competição. De maneira geral, os atletas apresentaram boa saúde mental, com perfil semelhante ao de iceberg (elevado vigor, níveis moderados de tensão e baixa fadiga, depressão, raiva e confusão mental). Os atletas com melhor percepção de sono e saúde que não fazem uso de medicamentos reguladores de humor apresentam melhor saúde mental.CONCLUSÃO: Torna-se evidente a boa qualidade de saúde entre os atletas participantes do estudo, destacando-se um cuidado especial com relação às implicações da qualidade do sono e o uso de medicamentos reguladores de humor na saúde mental dos atletas.

INTRODUCTION: Mental health of athletes can predict their sports and behavioral performance, making it an important field to explore.OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the mental health and associated factors in athletes who participated in the Santa Catarina Open Games of 2011, Brazil.METHODS: The sample consisted of 445 athletes who participated in the competition (211 men and 234 women). For the data collection the Questionnaire of Characterization and the Brunel Mood Scale were used. Data were collected individually at the competition between 30 and 50 minutes before the athletes compete. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean, frequency and percentage) and inferential statistics (Kruskal-Wallis, Mann Whitney and Spearman correlation with α set at 0.05).RESULTS: The athletes competed in 10 different sports, individual and collective. Most athletes are high school students or attended high school or university, with over than seven years of practice and participation in state and national competitions. Most athletes had perceived quality of rest and sleep between good and regular during the competition. In general, the athletes had good mental health, with a profile similar to an iceberg (high vigor, moderate levels of stress and low fatigue, depression, anger and confusion). Athletes with a better perception of sleep and health that do not use mood regulators have better mental health.CONCLUSION: It is evident the good quality of health among athletes participating in this study, highlighting a special care regarding the implications of sleep quality and the use of mood regulators in the mental health of athletes.

INTRODUCCIÓN: La salud mental de atletas puede predecir su desempeño deportivo y comportamental, lo que la vuelve un importante objeto de estudio.OBJETIVO: Investigar la salud mental y factores asociados en atletas que participaron en los Juegos Abiertos de Santa Catarina 2011, Brazil.MÉTODOS: La muestra fue compuesta por 445 atletas participantes de la competencia (211 hombres y 234 mujeres). Para la colecta de datos fue utilizado el Cuestionario de Caracterización y la Escala de Humor de Brunel. Los datos fueron colectados individualmente en el local de la competencia entre 30 y 50 minutos antes de que los atletas compitieran. Los datos fueron analizados por estadística descriptiva (promedio, frecuencia y porcentual) e inferencial (Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Withney y correlación de Spearman con α establecido de 0,05).RESULTADOS: Los atletas compitieron en 10 diferentes modalidades, colectivas e individuales. La mayoría de los atletas cursa o cursó la enseñanza media o superior, con más de siete años de tiempo de práctica y participación en competencias nacionales y estaduales. Gran parte de los atletas tuvo percepción de calidad de descanso y sueño entre buena y regular durante la competencia. De manera general, los atletas presentaron buena salud mental, con perfil semejante al de iceberg (elevado vigor, niveles moderados de tensión y baja fatiga, depresión, rabia y confusión mental). Los atletas con mejor percepción de sueño y salud que no hacen uso de medicamentos reguladores de humor presentan mejor salud mental.CONCLUSIÓN: Se ha vuelto evidente la buena calidad de salud entre los atletas participantes del estudio, destacándose un cuidado especial con relación a las implicaciones de la calidad del sueño y el uso de medicamentos reguladores de humor en la salud mental de los atletas.
