Neste artigo analisamos as sombras de buracos negros girantes de Kerr e a sua ligação com a primeira imagem de um buraco negro obtida pela colaboração internacional Telescópio Horizonte de Eventos. Obtemos analiticamente a sombra do buraco negro girante de Kerr a partir da forma das órbitas esféricas de fótons. Também utilizamos o método numérico denominado de tracejamento inverso de raios para gerar imagens que ilustram a percepção visual de um observador na presença de um buraco negro girante com e sem um disco de acreção.

In this article we analyze the shadows of spinning Kerr black holes and their connection with the first image of a black hole obtained by the international collaboration Event Horizon Telescope. We obtain analytically the shadow of a rotating black hole from the spherical photon orbits. We also use the method known as backwards ray-tracing to illustrate the visual perception of an observer in the presence of a spinning black hole with and without an accretion disk.

Resumo O movimento de partículas-teste pode ser analisado usando-se as ferramentas da Teoria da Relatividade Geral. Algumas verificações clássicas desta teoria envolvem trajetórias de partículas-teste no espaço-tempo esfericamente simétrico associado à solução de Schwarzschild. Um outro espaço-tempo com esta simetria é o descrito pela solução de Reissner-Nordström, associada a uma distribuição esférica de massa e carga elétrica como, por exemplo, um buraco negro carregado. Neste espaço-tempo, analisamos o movimento de partículas livres, as quais seguem geodésicas, e de partículas com carga elétrica que, portanto, interagem eletricamente com o objeto central.

Abstract Test-particles motion can be analyzed using the tools of the Theory of General Relativity. Some classical verifications of this theory involve test-particles trajectories in the spherically symmetric spacetime associated to the Schwarzschild solution. Another spacetime with this symmetry is the one described by the Reissner-Nordström solution, associated to a spherical distribution of mass and electric charge as, for instance, a charged black hole. In this spacetime, we analyze the motion of free particles, which follow geodesics, and of particles with electric charge, which, therefore, interact electrically with the central object.

Resumo Buracos negros são regiões aprisionadas do espaço-tempo. A sua inexorável atração gravitacional determina que nada – nem mesmo a luz – pode escapar desta região. Logo, um buraco negro não pode ser observado diretamente. Tem de ser estudado pelo modo como influencia o movimento das partículas de matéria e os raios de luz ao seu redor. Estas trajetórias são determinadas (em uma certa aproximação) pelas geodésicas da geometria do buraco negro. Em particular, geodésicas nulas – aquelas que raios luminosos seguem – possuem considerável interesse astrofísico: representam como a radiação emitida ao redor do buraco negro, ou proveniente de fontes longínquas, é distorcida pelo buraco negro. Neste trabalho apresentamos as equações de movimento de raios de luz na geometria de Kerr, que descreve um buraco negro com rotação, utilizando a teoria de Hamilton-Jacobi. Em seguida, analisamos as condições de existência das órbitas esféricas de fótons ao redor do buraco negro. Estas órbitas, representando fortes encurvamentos da luz, são a chave para determinar a aparência ótica do buraco negro. Por fim, por meio de métodos computacionais, apresentamos graficamente algumas destas trajetórias.

Abstract Black holes are trapped spacetime regions. Their inexorable gravitational attraction determines that nothing – not even light – may escape from this region. Thus, a black hole cannot be directly observed. It must be studied by the way it influences the motion of matter particles and light rays in its neighborhood. These trajectories are determined (within a certain approximation) by the black hole geometry's geodesics. In particular, null geodesics – those followed by light rays – possess considerable astrophysical interest: they represent how the radiation emitted around the black hole, or incoming from far away sources, is distorted by the black hole. In this work we present the equations of motion of light rays in the Kerr geometry, that describes a rotating black hole, making use of Hamilton-Jacobi theory. Subsequently, we analyze the conditions for the existence of spherical photon orbits around the black hole. These orbits, representing strong light bending, are the key to determine the optical appearance of the black hole. Finally, using computational methods, we exhibit plots illustrating some of these trajectories.

A divulgação científica possui um papel fundamental na democratização do acesso ao conhecimento. Nas últimas décadas, diversas iniciativas de difusão científica surgiram e se desenvolveram em meio a um processo de expansão de instituições e de investimentos. Na Amazônia brasileira, o número de ações de divulgação científica está muito aquém do necessário para contemplar satisfatoriamente sua vasta extensão territorial. O Laboratório de Demonstrações da Universidade Federal do Pará, fundado em 2004, tem atuado como um centro de ciência visando o avanço da alfabetização científica na Amazônia brasileira, assim como da difusão e popularização da ciência e tecnologia. Neste artigo apresentamos as atividades deste Laboratório de Demonstrações ao longo de mais de uma década de atuação e o impacto de suas ações educativas e de divulgação científica na Amazônia brasileira.

Science communication has a key role in democratizing the access to knowledge. In the last decades, many scientific diffusion initiatives emerged and developed in a process of expansion of institutions and investments. In the Brazilian Amazonia, the number of science communication actions is far less than what would be necessary to satisfactorily contemplate its vast territorial extension. The Demonstrations Laboratory of the Federal University of Pará, founded in 2004, has acted as a science center aiming the advancement of scientific literacy in the Brazilian Amazonia, as well as the dissemination and popularization of science and technology. We present the activities of this Demonstrations Laboratory over more than a decade of operation and the impact of its educational and science communication actions carried out in the Brazilian Amazonia.

No ano de 2008, professores e alunos da Faculdade de Física da Universidade Federal do Pará realizaram uma iniciativa pioneira para divulgação de História da Ciência na Amazônia brasileira. Esta iniciativa, denominada Museu Interativo da Física, passou a atuar em parceria com a comunidade amazônida, suas organizações governamentais, outras universidades, escolas municipais e estaduais do Estado do Pará com o intuito de colaborar com o aumento da qualidade da educação científica na região. Neste artigo, abordamos as atividades do Museu Interativo da Física e o impacto da sua participação na divulgação de História da Ciência na Amazônia brasileira.

In 2008, professors and students of the Physics Department of the Federal University of Pará realized a pioneering initiative for the dissemination of the History of Science in the Brazilian Amazonia. This initiative, named Physics Interactive Museum, started to act in partnership with the Amazonian community, its governmental organizations, other universities, state and municipal schools of the Pará State aiming to collaborate with the enhancement of the quality of science education in the region. We present the activities of the Physics Interactive Museum and the impact of its participation in the dissemination of History of Science in the Brazilian Amazonia.

We analyze the scalar radiation emitted by a source in uniform circular motion in Minkowski spacetime interacting with a massive Klein-Gordon field. We assume the source rotating around a central object due to a Newtonian force. By considering the canonical quantization of this field, we use perturbation theory to compute the radiation emitted at the tree level. Regarding the initial state of the field as being the Minkowski vacuum, we compute the emission amplitude for the rotating source, assuming it as being minimally coupled to the massive Klein-Gordon field. We then compute the power emitted by the swirling source as a function of its angular velocity, as measured by asymptotic static observers.

We consider an electric charge rotating around a Schwarzschild black hole. We compute, using quantum field theory in curved spacetime at the tree level, the power emitted by the rotating charge minimally coupled to the Maxwell field. We also compute how much of the radiation emitted by the swirling charge is absorbed by the black hole.
