Resumo Introdução A prevalência de rinossinusite (RS) é bastante alta. Apesar do uso generalizado de antibióticos para RS, existem outras formas de tratamento, incluindo a fitoterapia. Uma das ervas medicinais mais utilizadas no tratamento da RS é a Luffa operculata. Objetivo Esse estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a eficácia da solução tópica nasal do extrato aquoso de Luffa operculata, determinando a toxicidade ao seu uso e identificando os princípios ativos apresentados no extrato aquoso. O objetivo secundário foi avaliar a ação dos princípios ativos sobre as bactérias comumente envolvidas na RS aguda. Método O estudo foi realizado em modelo experimental de sinusite. Utilizaram-se três concentrações diferentes de Luffa operculata como tratamento local de RS. Os resultados foram comparados com os observados em grupos de controle que receberam solução salina nasal. O exame histológico do fígado, rim, baço, miocárdio, cérebro e pulmões de todos os animais avaliou a toxicidade de Luffa operculata. O extrato aquoso utilizado foi submetido à análise cromatográfica e um princípio ativo foi isolado e testado para inibição in vitro de colônias bacterianas normalmente encontradas em RS. Resultados O tratamento intranasal da sinusite com Luffa operculata mostrou melhor evolução clínica do que o do grupo controle. Foi observada diferença estatisticamente significante (p > 0.10) entre o grupo tratado e o grupo controle na avaliação histológica do padrão inflamatório. O extrato aquoso de Luffa operculata utilizado apresentou predominância do ácido 2,3-dicafeoilglicarico, substância ainda não descrita na literatura. Houve uma diferença significativa no crescimento bacteriano de Streptococcus pyogenes em placas de ágar-sangue quando sob a influência tanto do extrato aquoso quanto da substância ativa. Conclusão A solução tópica nasal do extrato aquoso de Luffa operculata é eficaz em comparação com a aplicação de solução salina para o tratamento de RS bacteriana em um modelo experimental. Luffa operculata determinou a inibição in vitro do crescimento de Streptococcus pyogenes.

Abstract Introduction The prevalence of rhinosinusitis is quite high. Despite the widespread use of antibiotics for rhinosinusitis, there are other forms of treatment, including phytotherapy. One of the most widely used herbal medicines for treatment of rhinosinusitis is Luffa operculata. Objective This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of topical nasal solution of the aqueous extract of L. operculata, determining the toxicity to its use and identifying the active principles presented in the aqueous extract. The secondary objective was to evaluate the action of active principles on bacteria commonly involved in acute rhino sinusitis. Methods The study was conducted in experimental model of sinusitis. Three different concentrations of L. operculata were used as local treatment of rhino sinusitis. The results were compared with those observed in control groups that received nasal saline solution. Histological examination of the liver, kidney, spleen, myocardium, brain and lungs of all animals evaluated the toxicity of L. operculata. The aqueous extract used was subjected to chromatographic analysis and an active principle was isolated and tested for in vitro inhibition of bacterial colonies usually found in rhino sinusitis. Results Intranasal treatment of sinusitis with L. operculata showed better clinical evolution than control group. Statistically significant difference (p > 0.10) between the treated group and the control group was observed in the histologic evaluation for inflammatory pattern. The aqueous extract of L. operculata used presented a predominance of 2,3-dicafeoilglicaric acid, a substance not yet described in the literature. There was a significant difference in bacterial growth of Streptococcus pyogenes on blood-agar plates when under the influence of both the aqueous extract and the active substance. Conclusion Topical nasal solution of the aqueous extract of L. operculata is effective compared to the application of saline solution for the treatment of bacterial rhinosinusitis in an experimental model. L. operculata determined in vitro inhibition of growth of S. pyogenes.

Introdução: A literatura indica uma correlação entre estrogênio elevado no soro e sintomas nasais ou alterações inflamatórias na mucosa nasal. Os receptores de estrogênio tendem a ser controlados por retroalimentação negativa, para evitar um estímulo nocivo sobre as diversas funções corporais em períodos de hiperestrogenismo. Propomos uma hipótese em que os mecanismos que regulam a expressão de receptores de estradiol na mucosa nasal estão ausentes em alguns pacientes, e a sua concentração permanece estável mesmo em períodos de elevada concentração sérica hormonal, o que pode conduzir a sintomas locais na mucosa nasal. Desenho do estudo: Estudo prospectivo experimental. Objetivo: Determinar se altos níveis de estrogênio induzem à redução no número de receptores de estrogênio na mucosa nasal. Material e método: Trinta cobaias foram submetidas à biópsia da concha nasal, recebendo 0,5 ml de cipionato de estradiol por via intraperitoneal por trinta dias consecutivos. Em seguida foram obtidas amostras da concha nasal contralateral. As análises imuno-histoquímicas dos receptores de estrógeno foram realizadas antes e depois da hormonioterapia. Resultados: O grupo pós-tratamento mostrou uma redução da expressão dos receptores (p = 5,2726-5). Conclusão: Redução na expressão do receptor de estrogênio nasal foi encontrada após trinta dias de administração de estradiol.

Introduction: Some clinical trials revealed a correlation between increased serum estrogen and nasal symptoms or inflammatory changes in nasal mucosa. Estrogen receptors tend to be controlled by a negative feedback, to avoid a deleterious stimulus over several body functions while in hyperestrogenic periods. This study proposes a hypothesis where mechanisms regulating expression of estradiol receptors in nasal mucosa are absent in some patients, and their concentration remains steady even in periods of high serum hormonal concentration, potentially leading to local estrogenic symptoms in nasal mucosa. Study design: This was an experimental prospective study. Aim: To determine whether estrogen levels induce the reduction of the number of estrogen receptors in the nasal mucosa. Methods: In the present study, 30 adult male guinea pigs were subjected to a biopsy of the middle nasal turbinate and received 0.5 mL of estradiol cypionate intraperitoneally for 30 consecutive days. Afterwards, samples from contralateral middle turbinate were obtained. Immunohistochemical analysis of estrogen receptors were performed pre- and post-treatment. Results: The post-treatment group showed reduction of receptor expression when compared to the pre-treatment group. (p = 5.2726-5). Conclusion: A reduction in the expression of the nasal estrogen receptor was observed after 30 days of estradiol administration.

OBJETIVO: Averiguar a eficácia da metodologia para coleta de amostras em cavidade oral e orofaringe e determinar a prevalência do HPV na cavidade oral e orofaringe de adultos e crianças. MÉTODO: A população estudada foi atendida por um programa assistencial em um distrito rural de São Paulo. Os indivíduos foram convidados a doar amostras independentemente de queixas. RESULTADOS E CONCLUSÃO: Foram incluídos no estudo 47 homens, 77 mulheres e 22 crianças, dos quais amostras da cavidade oral foram obtidas por bochecho e gargarejo com antisséptico oral comercial. Foram encontrados três resultados positivos (2,4%) em adultos, duas amostras de HPV 55 e uma amostra de HPV 58. Não foram observados resultados positivos em crianças. Além disso, concluímos que o método de coleta com o enxágue bucal com antisséptico mostrou-se eficaz e rápido para a detecção de HPV na cavidade oral e orofaríngea na população geral.

Knowledge about HPV infection in the oral cavity/oropharynx may contribute to the elucidation of the role it plays in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (HNSCC). OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of the methodology used for sampling the oral cavity and oropharynx mucosae and to determine the prevalence of HPV in the oral cavity and oropharynx of adults and children. METHOD: The study population was served by an assistance program in a rural district of São Paulo. The subjects were asked to donate samples regardless of complaints. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The study included 47 men, 77 women and 22 children, of which the oral cavity samples were obtained by gargling with commercially-available antiseptic mouthwash. We found 3 positive samples (2.4%) in adults: 2 HPV 55 and one HPV 58. No positive results were found in children. Furthermore we concluded that the sampling method with the mouthwash proved effective and fast for the detection of HPV in the oral cavity and oropharynx in the general population.

Vários materiais são propostos para reconstrução nasal, não havendo consenso sobre qual o melhor. A manta de celulose produzida por bactéria pode ser mais um elemento para adição cartilaginosa. Não há estudos deste material no dorso nasal. OBJETIVO: Avaliar a resposta tecidual à presença da celulose bacteriana no dorso nasal de coelhos. MATERIAL E MÉTODO: Foram utilizados 22 coelhos Nova Zelândia, sendo que em 20 deles foi implantada a manta de celulose no dorso nasal e em 2 controles nada foi feito. Foram acompanhados por um período de três e seis meses, sendo então retirados as regiões do dorso nasal e narinas dos coelhos e realizado estudo histopatológico levando em consideração parâmetros definidos de condição inflamatória como congestão vascular, intensidade do processo inflamatório e presença de exsudato purulento. RESULTADOS: O processo inflamatório manteve-se estável, demonstrando sua relação com o procedimento cirúrgico, e não com a presença da manta de celulose. Nos demais parâmetros estudados não houve diferença estatisticamente significante. CONCLUSÃO: A manta de celulose de Acetobacter xylinum mostrou boa biocompatibilidade e manteve-se estável no decorrer do tempo de estudo, podendo ser considerada um bom material para uso na elevação do dorso nasal.

Several materials have been proposed for nasal reconstruction. There is no consensus on which is the best. The cellulose blanket produced by bacteria may be a possible cartilaginous addition element to the nose. AIM: to study tissue reaction to cellulose in the dorsal nose of rabbits. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 22 New Zealand rabbits were used. In 20 a cellulose blanket was implanted in the nasal dorsum and 2 served as controls. They were followed up through a period of three and six months, after which their nostrils and nasal dorsums were removed and histological studies were carried out on them, considering defined parameters of inflammation such as vascular congestion, intensity of the inflammatory process and presence of purulent exudate. RESULTS: The inflammatory process remained stable, showing its relationship with the surgical procedure and not with the presence of the cellulose blanket. There were no statistical differences in the other parameters. CONCLUSION: The cellulose blanket produced by Acetobacter xylinum presented good biocompatibility, remained stable during the entire study period, and could be considered a good material for elevating the nasal dorsum.

A etiologia mais aceita para pólipos de pregas vocais é o fonotrauma. Imaginamos que possa existir alguma alteração anatômica prévia nas pregas vocais que predisponha indivíduos a apresentarem lesões fonotraumáticas. OBJETIVO: O presente estudo retrospectivo procura encontrar correlação entre os pólipos de prega vocal e alterações estruturais da prega vocais. MATERIAL E MÉTODO: Foi realizado trabalho retrospectivo a partir da descrição cirúrgica de 33 pacientes submetidos a exérese de pólipo de prega vocal no período de três anos em hospital universitário. RESULTADOS: Trinta e um pacientes apresentaram pólipos unilaterais e 2 bilaterais. Foram encontradas 27 lesões associadas: 10 lesões reacionais, 12 sulcos, 3 cistos e 2 ectasia capilars. Foram 14 lesões contralaterais e 13 ipsilaterais. DISCUSSÃO E CONCLUSÕES: Encontrou-se uma forte correlação entre a presença de uma lesão de base influindo como co-fator de fragilização da prega vocal ao fonotrauma, pois das 27 lesões encontradas 17 foram consideradas pré-existentes (63%). As lesões poderiam interferir na coaptação das pregas vocais, gerando uma onda mucosa irregular durante a fonação, expondo o espaço de Reinke a uma agressão estrutural. Apesar do caráter preliminar do trabalho os achados sugerem íntima correlação entre o pólipo e lesões estruturais mínimas das pregas vocais.

Phonotrauma is considered the main cause of vocal fold polyps (VFP). However, the authors believe that an underlying anatomical deviation could render the vocal folds more susceptible to such trauma. AIM: To prove this hypothesis a retrospective chart review was carried out to correlate the surgical findings of patients with VFP. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The charts of thirty-three patients who underwent surgery for excision of VFP were reviewed: 21 had right VFP, 10 had left VFP and 2 had bilateral lesions. RESULTS: Associated lesions were reported in 27 patients (14 lesions on the opposite VF and 13 on the ipsilateral VF): 10 opposite nodules, 12 sulcus vocalis, 3 cysts, and 2 capillary engorgement. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: The high incidence of associated anatomical lesions to the VF (63%) suggests that patients with these minor underlying anatomical deviations are more vulnerable to vocal abuse, probably because they present abnormal glottic closure and an irregular vibratory margin.

Dentre as causas de insucesso nas cirurgias para a estenose traqueal está a formação de tecidos de cicatrização exuberantes. O uso de curativos para evitar esta reação pode ser de grande valia nestes casos. A celulose bacteriana produzida por acetobacter xylinun pode ser útil nestes casos. Não há estudos na região laringotraqueal. OBJETIVO: Avaliar a resposta tecidual subglótica de coelhos após escarificação e colocação de curativo de celulose, comparando com grupo controle. FORMA DE ESTUDO: Experimental MATERIAL E MÉTODOS: Foram estudados 26 coelhos, submetidos a escarificação da região laringotraqueal e tratados com curativo e comparados com controle. Foram estabelecidos 4 tempos de seguimento. Os seguimentos laringotraqueais foram examinados histologicamente e os resultados foram avaliados estaticamente. RESULTADOS: O grupo de estudo evoluiu com o passar do tempo com resultados estatisticamente semelhantes ao do grupo controle, nos parâmetros Congestão vascular, Exsudato purulento, Inflamação aguda, Integridade do epitélio, Proliferação fibrosa e Reação granulomatosa. CONCLUSÃO: Não foram observadas diferenças entre os grupos controle e de estudo quanto aos parâmetros inflamatórios ou cicatriciais. Não houve sinais inflamatórios relacionados ao uso da membrana de celulose que não tivessem ocorrido devido ao traumatismo cirúrgico.

Exuberant scarring tissue formation is among the failure causes of tracheal stenosis surgery. Dressings that could avoid such reaction could be very helpful in these cases. Bacterial cellulose, produced by acetobacter xylinun can be useful in these cases. There are no studies in the laryngotracheal region. AIM: to assess subglottic tissue response in rabbits after scarification and placement of cellulose dressing, and comparing it to a control group. STUDY DESIGN: experimental. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 26 rabbits underwent laryngotracheal scarification, received the dressing and were compared to the control group. We established four follow up periods. Laryngotracheal specimens underwent histological exam and the results were statistically assessed. RESULTS: the study group had statistically similar results when compared to the control group in the following parameters: vascular congestion, purulent oozing, acute inflammation, epithelial integrity, fibrous proliferation and granulous proliferation. CONCLUSION: we did not observe differences between the study and control groups as far as inflammation and scarring are concerned. There were no inflammatory signs associated with the use of the cellulose membrane that did no occur because of surgery.

A criação de modelos de estudo das rinossinusites é necessária para compreensão de seus aspectos fisiopatológicos. OBJETIVO: Sugerimos neste estudo estabelecer um modelo experimental fidedigno, reproduzível e consistente para a rinossinusite inflamatória sem uso de inoculação de agentes infecciosos em coelhos. Tipo de Estudo: Experimental. MATERIAL E MÉTODO: Foram utilizados 20 coelhos neste estudo. Os animais foram submetidos a 4 intervenções diferentes: colocação de tampão de esponja unilateral, obliteração unilateral de óstio nasal com cianoacrilato, instilação unilateral de antígenos em seio maxilar e instilação de sangue em cavidade maxilar unilateral. Os animais foram acompanhados até 15 dias do início do estudo e ao final do período de seguimento foram anestesiados e sacrificados. Os seios maxilares foram avaliados histologicamente e os resultados comparados com os seios maxilares contralaterais para controle e entre os grupos de intervenção. RESULTADOS: Todos os animais do estudo desenvolveram rinorréia amarelada unilateral até o 15º dia de acompanhamento. Apenas os animais que receberam sangue não apresentaram alterações histológicas compatíveis com rinossinusite purulenta. CONCLUSÕES: O uso de esponja e cola para obstrução do óstio meatal e a aplicação de toxóide são eficientes como produtores de modelo de rinossinusite. A aplicação de sangue no antro não produz os mesmos resultados.

Experimental models for clinical studies of rhinosinusitis are needed. AIM: to define a reliable, solid and reproducible experimental model for inflammatory rhinosinusitis with no innoculation of infectious agents in rabbits. Study design: Experimental. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Twenty 20 rabbits were divided into 4 groups submitted to 4 different interventions: the placement of a unilateral nasal fossa sponge, unilateral obliteration of the nasal ostium with cyanoacrylate, unilateral placement of antigens in the maxillary cavity and unilateral placement of blood in the maxillary cavity. The animals were monitored for 15 days and then anesthetized and sacrificed; the maxillary sinuses were evaluated histologicaly and results were compared with controls and between the intervention groups. CONCLUSION: Sponje and glue as agents of meatal obstruction and toxoid aplied in the antrum are efficient as methods for rhinosinusitis modeling. Blood was not efficient in producing sinusitis.

Estudo de coorte contemporânea longitudinal. A muda vocal pode ser definida como um conjunto de mudanças no padrão da voz, que ocorreria entre a infância e a puberdade. Neste período, algumas lesões das pregas vocais, mais especificamente os cistos e nódulos, podem sofrer transformações. OBJETIVO: Avaliar as modificações que a muda vocal determinou nas pregas vocais de crianças com alterações estruturais, como nódulos, cisto ou sulco. MATERIAL E MÉTODO: Foram reavaliados todos os exames de videolaringoscopia ou nasofibroscopia de crianças menores de dez anos que apresentavam alterações estruturais nas pregas vocais, nódulos, cistos, ou sulcos realizados no ambulatório de laringologia da Santa Casa de Misericórdia de São Paulo, durante o período de 1997 a 2002. Destas crianças, todas as que já tinham passado pela muda vocal foram convocadas para repetir o exame e responder a um questionário referente à muda. RESULTADOS: Foram avaliadas onze crianças nas quais observou-se expressiva diminuição da queixa de disfonia após a muda. As lesões tipo espessamento tenderam a ser reabsorvidas e as lesões tipo abaulamento sofreram transformações sem desaparecer. CONCLUSÃO: A caracterização da lesão e das conseqüentes modificações que ocorrem com a muda são fundamentais na conduta frente uma criança com disfonia.

A longitudinal cohort study Introduction: Voice change may be defined as a group of changes in voice pattern that take place between childhood and puberty. During this period some vocal cord lesions (specifically cysts and nodules) may undergo transformation. AIM: To evaluate changes in vocal cord structural lesions following voice changes. MATERIAL AND METHOD: All laringoscopic exams made at the Sao Paulo Santa Casa de Misericordia between 1997 and 2002 of children aged below 10 years with structural lesions were reevaluated. Children whose voice had already changed repeated the exam and answered a questionary about voice change. RESULTS: Eleven children were studied. Observation showed that hoarseness was significantly decreased after voice change, and that lesions revealed modifications. Thickened-like lesions were reabsorved, and protrusion-like lesions underwent modification but did not disappear. CONCLUSION: The definition of lesions and subsequent modifications after voice change are important to define the correct approach to children presenting hoarseness.

INTRODUÇÃO: A Doença do Refluxo Gastroesofágico (DRGE) é a doença digestiva mais prevalente da atualidade e, recentemente, tem sido implicada em uma gama de alterações do seguimento laringofaríngeo (RLF). No entanto, pouco se sabe dos mecanismos fisiopatológicos destas manifestações supraesofágicas da DRGE. Os achados clínicos contraditórios e recentes pesquisas sugerem haver deficiências na capacidade de defesa deste seguimento. Uma das principais responsáveis pela homeostase da mucosa oral e do trato digestivo é a saliva com seu conteúdo orgânico e inorgânico. Tanto alterações do pH quanto do volume salivar já foram correlacionados com os sintomas e sinais sugestivos da DRGE e RLF. Estudo recente de nossa autoria demonstra diminuição estatisticamente significante do pH salivar de indivíduos com RLF quando comparado a controles sem a doença. Outro estudo constatou correlação entre a redução do volume X pH da saliva em indivíduos com DRGE, estando esta redução diretamente relacionada aos níveis de pH esofágico constatados durante pH-metria esofágica de 24 horas. OBJETIVOS: Avaliar como se comportam o pH e volume da saliva em um mesmo indivíduo com DRGE e RLF antes e após o tratamento clínico. MATERIAL E MÉTODO: Vinte e três pacientes com RLF tiveram o pH e volume da saliva total testados antes e após receberem tratamento com droga bloqueadora de bomba de prótons durante 12 semanas. RESULTADOS: Houve uma diferença estatisticamente significante (p<0,001) entre o pH da saliva antes e após o tratamento, estando este maior após o controle clínico da doença. O volume de saliva no paciente tratado foi significativamente maior do que no paciente pré-tratamento (p=0.009). DISCUSSÃO: Os achados sugerem que o pH salivar é influenciado pela presença de refluxo gastroduodenal à região laringofaríngea. Caso estudos futuros com populações maiores realmente comprovem esta correlação, poderemos cogitar a possibilidade de usar a mensuração do pH salivar, que é feita de forma rápida e não invasiva, como um meio de diagnosticar e avaliar o comportamento e controle do Refluxo Laringofaríngeo.

INTRODUCTION: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is the most prevalent digestive disease of the modern society and has been associated with abnormalities in the larynx and pharynx (LPR). Nonetheless, little is known about the mechanisms involved in this atypical form of the disease. Contradictory clinical data suggest a defense deficit at this segment. Saliva with its organic and inorganic components is responsible for the homeostasis of the oral mucosa and the digestive tract. Salivary pH and volume abnormalities have been linked to laryngopharyngeal symptoms of GERD and LPR. In a recent study we demonstrated significant salivary pH reduction in patients with LPR. Another study found correlation between reduced salivary pH and volume directly related to esophageal pH-metry results. AIM: To evaluate salivary pH and volume before and after clinical treatment of LPR. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Twenty-three adults with LPR had total fasting saliva tested before and after a 12-week course of oral proton pump inhibitor. RESULTS: A statistically significant difference was found in salivary pH before and after treatment with increase of pH values after control of the disease (p<0.001). Salivary volumes of treated patients were also significantly higher than in pre-treated patients (p=0.009). DISCUSSION: These findings suggest that salivary pH and volume are influenced by the presence of gastroesophageal contents and that salivary pH monitoring can potentially become a cost-effective method for diagnosing and controlling LPR.

Embora várias investigações venham enfocando a fisiologia e anatomia da voz e laringe do idoso, pouco tem sido produzido com a preocupação de saber o impacto das condições vocais na qualidade de vida desta porção da população. OBJETIVO: Verificar o impacto da voz na qualidade da vida da mulher idosa, usando os questionários Short-form Health Survey - SF36 e Voice Index Handicap (VHI). DESENHO DO ESTUDO: Estudo de coorte prospectivo com corte transversal. MÉTODO E MATERIAL: Cinqüenta mulheres idosas participaram desta pesquisa, com idades entre 60 e 87 anos e idade média de 70.8 anos, recrutadas aleatoriamente. As participantes do estudo foram submetidas aos dois questionários: O SF36 e O VHI. Foram comparadas as respostas de ambos os questionários pelo teste de Kruskall-Wallis, verificando se havia diferença significante entre as variáveis. O teste de Spearman foi usado para avaliar se havia correlação entre os resultados das variáveis de VHI com os resultados obtidos no parâmetro de SF36 de qualidade de vida. RESULTADOS: Nós obtivemos valores considerados estatisticamente significantes nas correlações entre domínio físico de VHI e funcionamento físico, dor física e papel físico na vida do SF-36. CONCLUSÃO: Houve uma correlação estatisticamente significante e positiva entre os resultados obtidos nos parâmetros funcionamento físico, vitalidade, saúde geral, saúde mental, dor corporal e papel físico na vida do SF36. Houve uma correlação estatisticamente significante e negativa entre os resultados totais obtidos no SF36 e o VHI.

Although there are several investigations focusing the physiology and anatomy of voice and the senior's larynx, little has been produced to support the knowledge of the impact of vocal conditions on quality of life of this portion of the population. AIM: To verify the impact of voice on quality of the life of elderly women, using the questionnaires Short-Form Health Survey - SF36 and Voice Handicap Index (VHI). STUDY DESIGN: Prospective transversal cohort study. METHOD AND MATERIAL: Fifty senior women participated in this research, with ages between 60 and 87 years and mean age of 70.8 years old, randomly recruited. The participants of the study were submitted to two questionnaires: SF36 and VHI. The answers of both questionnaires were compared by Kruskall-Wallis test, verifying if there were significant differences among the variables. The test of Spearman was used to evaluate if there was correlation among the results of the variables of VHI and the results obtained in the parameter of SF36 for life quality. RESULTS: We obtained values considered statistically significant in the correlations among physical domain of VHI and physical operation, physical pain and physical role in life of SF36. CONCLUSION: There was a significant and positive correlation among the results obtained in the parameters physical operation, vitality, general health, mental health, corporal pain and physical role in life of SF36. There were statistically significant and negative correlations among the total results obtained in SF36 and VHI.
