RESUMO Leopardus pardalis é uma das espécies de felinos neotropicais mais estudadas em seus aspectos ecológicos, porém informações de questões morfofisiológicas do trato digestório não são encontradas na literatura. Visando contribuir com tais informações, o objetivo deste artigo foi caracterizar a morfologia do estômago dessa espécie. Nesta pesquisa, foram utilizados cinco exemplares adultos, coletados após óbito por atropelamento ou doados pelo IBAMA ao Laboratório de Zoologia e Morfologia Animal da Universidade do Estado de Mato Grosso - Alta Floresta. Os animais foram fixados com solução aquosa de formaldeído a 10%, dissecados por meio de técnicas anatômicas. Além dos estudos anatômicos, também foram coletados tecidos para microscopia. As análises macroscópicas revelaram que o estômago era do tipo unicavitário, com presença de pequena e grande curvatura, localizado no antímero esquerdo e constituído pelas regiões características do órgão. Em seus aspectos microscópicos, mostrou-se formado pelas quatro túnicas usuais do tubo digestório: túnica mucosa, submucosa, muscular e serosa, cada uma com as particularidades características de cada região, principalmente na túnica mucosa. O estômago de L. pardalis revelou uma morfologia semelhante às espécies domésticas e selvagens, com particularidades histomorfológicas na região pilórica. Esse padrão pode estar relacionado a adaptações evolutivas no processo digestivo dessa espécie.

ABSTRACT The species Leopardus pardalis is one of the species of neotropical felines more studied in its ecological aspects, however, information of morphophysiological questions of the digestive tract are not found in the literature. Aiming to contribute with such information, the objective of this work was to characterize the morphology of the stomach of this species. Five adult specimens, collected after death by trampling, or donated by IBAMA to the Laboratory of Zoology and Animal Morphology of the University of the State of Mato Grosso - Alta Floresta, were used in this research. The animals were fixed with aqueous solution of formaldehyde 10%, dissected through the basic techniques and instruments of anatomy, and later the material was collected for microscopy. The macroscopic analysis revealed that the stomach was of the unicavitary type, with small and great curvature, located in the left antimer and constituted by the characteristic regions of the organ. In its microscopic aspects it was formed by the four usual tunics of the digestive tube: tunica mucosa, submucosa, muscular and serosa, each one with the peculiarities characteristic of each region, mainly in the tunica mucosa. The stomach of L. pardalis revealed similar morphology to the domestic and wild species, with small histomorphological peculiarities in the pyloric region, which may be related to evolutionary adaptations in the digestive process of this species.

Objetivou-se analisar a viabilidade econômica da terceira ordenha em sistemas de produção de leite que utilizam ordenhadeira mecânica, do tipo circuito aberto, visando fornecer aos técnicos e pecuaristas informações que os auxiliem no processo de tomada de decisões. Especificamente pretendeu-se ainda: a) estimar o custo de uma ordenha; b) estimar, por meio de simulação, o custo da terceira ordenha; c) desenvolver uma equação matemática que permita estimar a quantidade mínima de leite produzido em duas ordenhas, a partir da qual será viável economicamente a realização da terceira ordenha. Os dados foram coletados em três sistemas de produção de leite, em uma rotina de duas ordenhas diárias, sendo realizadas três coletas de dados em cada um, perfazendo um total de nove. Considerando-se os dados médios, seria viável a realização da terceira ordenha se a produtividade média diária das vacas em lactação em duas ordenhas fosse igual ou superior a 38,13kg de leite. A equação matemática desenvolvida pode auxiliar o técnico e o pecuarista a estimarem a quantidade mínima de leite produzido por uma vaca em duas ordenhas, a partir da qual será viável economicamente a realização da terceira ordenha, com precisão e considerável rapidez.

This study aims to analyze the economic viability of the third milking in milk production systems using open circuit milking mechanics, aiming to provide technicians and farmers with information to help in the decision-making process. Specifically intend to a) estimate the cost of a milking; (b) estimate, by means of simulation, the cost of the third milking; (c) develop a mathematical equation that allows estimating the minimum amount of milk produced in two milkings, from which it will be economically feasible to hold the third milking. The data were collected in three milk production systems, in a routine of two milkings per day, with three collections of data in each, a total of nine collections. Considering the average data, it would be feasible to hold the third milking if the productivity of daily average lactating cows is equal or greater than 38.13 kg of milk. The mathematical equation developed may help the technician and the farmer to estimate the minimum quantity of milk produced by a cow in two milkings, from which it will be economically feasible to hold the third milking with precision and considerable speed.

Os objetivos desta pesquisa foram simular, analisar e quantificar o impacto econômico da frequência média anual de mastite clínica em rebanhos bovinos leiteiros. A pesquisa foi realizada por meio de simulação no sistema computacional CU$TO MASTITE, considerando rebanhos leiteiros com 1, 7 e 15% de mastite clínica. Foram consideradas como prevenção as despesas com monitoramento (cultura e antibiograma, contagem de células somáticas no tanque e contagem de células somática individual), pré e pós dipping, vacinação, tratamento de vacas secas e manutenção de ordenhadeira. Como medida curativa considerou-se apenas tratamento de casos clínicos. O impacto da mastite foi estimado como sendo o total em perdas acrescido das despesas com prevenção e tratamento de casos clínicos. O aumento da frequência média anual de mastite influenciou diretamente no impacto econômico da mastite, evidenciando a necessidade de monitoramento da mastite clínica e subclínica e adoção de medidas preventivas para diminuir os prejuízos ocasionados por essa enfermidade. As despesas com tratamento preventivo representaram, no máximo, 19,7% do impacto econômico, o que demonstra vantagens em investir nessa prática, pois ela irá contribuir significativamente para reduzir o impacto econômico da mastite.

The objectives of this research were to analyze and quantify the economic impact of the annual average frequency of clinical mastitis in dairy cattle. The research was carried through data simulation in the CU$TO MASTITE computational system, considering dairy cattle with 1, 7 and 15% of clinical mastitis. The expenditures considered as prevention included those of monitoring (culture and antibiogram, bulk tank somatic cell count and individual somatic cell count) pre- and post-dipping, vaccination, treatment of dry cows and maintenance of the milking machine. The measures considered as healing consisted only of the treatment of clinical cases. The impact of the mastitis was estimated as being the total in losses in addition to the expenditures with prevention and treatment of clinical cases. The increase of the annual average frequency of mastitis directly influenced the economic impact of the mastitis. The higher economic impact evidences the need for the monitoring of clinical and subclinical mastitis and the adoption of preventative measures to diminish the damages caused by this disease. The expenditures with preventive treatment represented, at maximum, 19.7% of the economic impact, which demonstrates the advantages of investing in this practice, since it contributes significantly toward reducing the economic impact of mastitis.

RESUMO Os objetivos desta pesquisa foram analisar e quantificar a influência da contagem de células somáticas (CCS) sobre o impacto econômico da mastite. A pesquisa foi realizada por meio de simulação no sistema computacional CU$TO MASTITE, considerando rebanhos leiteiros com média de 250.000; 500.000; 750.000 e 1.000.000 células somáticas/mL de leite. Foram consideradas como prevenção as despesas com monitoramento (cultura e antibiograma, CCS do tanque e CCS individual), pré e pós dipping, vacinação, tratamento de vacas secas e manutenção de ordenhadeira. Como medidas curativas foram considerados os tratamentos com casos clínicos, cuja percentagem foi de 7% das vacas em lactação. O impacto da mastite foi estimado como sendo o total em perdas acrescido das despesas com prevenção e tratamento de casos clínicos. O aumento da contagem de células somáticas no tanque influenciou diretamente no impacto econômico da mastite. O elevado impacto evidencia a necessidade de monitoramento da mastite clínica e subclínica e adoção de medidas preventivas para diminuir os impactos ocasionados. As despesas com prevenção repre-sentaram, no máximo, 10,8% do impacto econômico, o que demonstra vantagens em investir nessa prática, pois irá contribuir significativamente para diminuição da CCS no tanque e, consequen-temente, para reduzir o impacto econômico da mastite.

ABSTRACT The objectives of this research were to investigate and quantify the influence of the somatic cell count (SCC) on the economic impact of mastitis. The work was carried out by means of data simulation in CU$TO MASTITE software system, taking into account dairy herds with 250,000; 500,000; 750,000 and 1,000.000 cells/mL of milk. Were considered as prevention expenses on monitoring (culture and antibiogram, bulk tank SCC and individual SCC) pre and post dipping, vaccination, treatment of dry cows and maintenance of milking machine. As curative measures, treatment of clinical cases were considered, which percentage was 7% of the lactating cows. The impact of mastitis was estimated as being the total in losses added of expenses on both prevention and treatment of clinic cases. Increased bulk tank somatic cell count influenced directly the economic impact of mastitis. The high economic impact highlights the need for monitoring of clinic and subclinical mastitis and adoption of preventive measures to decrease the impacts. The expenses on preventive treatment represents, in the maximum, 10.8% of the economic impact which demonstrates advantages in investing on that practice, once it will contribute significantly to the decrease of bulk tank SCC and, consequently to reduce the economic impact of mastitis.

Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar a eficiência da cabina do trator, de dois tipos de ponta de pulverização e de duas posições da barra do pulverizador montado em trator em aplicações de herbicidas na cultura de cana-de-açúcar, como medidas de proteção coletiva para a atividade de tratorista, separadamente ou combinadas; e classificar a segurança dessas condições de trabalho com as 46 recomendações de herbicidas registradas. As exposições dérmica e respiratória do tratorista foram quantificadas em aplicações com o pulverizador equipado com barra traseira ou central, associadas com pontas com indução de ar, modelo Turbo TeeJet Air Induction® (TTI-11004VP), e sem indução de ar, modelo Turbo Floodjet® (TF-VP3), e o trator sem e com cabina. Foram calculadas as margens de segurança (MS) para 46 recomendações de aplicação de herbicidas nessas condições de trabalho. Pelos valores de MS calculados, as condições de trabalho foram classificadas como seguras (MS > 1) ou inseguras (MS < 1). A condição de trabalho mais segura para o tratorista é a associação de pulverizador de barra central, trator com cabina e pontas TTI. Nas aplicações com o pulverizador de barra central sem a cabina, das 46 recomendações de herbicidas, são seguras para o tratorista as de imazapyr, trifloxysulfuron-sodium, imazapic, glyphosate, amicarbazone, hexazinone, sulfentrazone, clomazone, oxadiazon, isoxaflutole, pendimethalin, flazasulfuron, tebuthiuron, ethoxysulfuron e acetoclor. Com o uso da cabina, também são seguras as de metribuzin e s-metalochlor. Nas aplicações com o pulverizador de barra traseira sem a cabina, das 46 recomendações de herbicidas, são seguras as de imazapyr, trifloxysulfuron-sodium, imazapic, glyphosate, amicarbazone, hexazinone, sulfentrazone, clomazone, oxadiazon, isoxaflutole, pendimethalin, flazasulfuron e tebuthiuron. Com a associação da cabina, também são seguras para o tratorista a aplicação do ethoxysulfuron com as pontas TF e a do metribuzin e s-metalochlor com as pontas TTI.

This work was carried out to evaluate the efficiency of the tractor cabin, two nozzle models and two bar positions of a tractor-mounted sprayer in herbicide applications on sugar cane crop as a collective protection measure for tractor driver activity, separately or combined; and to classify the safety of these working conditions according to the 46 recommendations of registered herbicides. The truck driver´ s skin and respiratory organ exposures were quantified in applications with the sprayer equipped with back or central bar, nozzles with air induction, Turbo TeeJet Air Induction® (TTI-11004VP) model and without air induction, Turbo Floodjet® (TF VP3) model, and tractor with and without cabin. The safety margins (SM) for 46 herbicide application recommendations under these work conditions were calculated. Based on the calculated MS values, the work conditions were classified as safe (SM e" 1) or unsafe (SM > 1). The safest work conditions for the tractor driver were when the sprayer was combined with the central bar, tractor cabin and TTI model nozzles. With sprayer with central bar without cabin, of the 46 herbicide recommendations, imazapyr, trifloxysulfuron-sodium, imazapic, glyphosate, amicarbazone, hexazinone, sulfentrazone, clomazone, oxadiazon, isoxaflutole, pendimethalin, flazasulfuron, tebuthiuron, ethoxysulfuron and acetoclor were considered safe for the truck driver. With cabin use, metribuzin and s-metalochlor applications were also considered safe. In the applications with back bar sprayer and without the cabin, of the 46 herbicide recommendations, imazapyr, trifloxysulfuron-sodium, imazapic, glyphosate, amicarbazone, hexazinone, sulfentrazone, clomazone, oxadiazon, isoxaflutole, pendimethalin, flazasulfuron and tebuthiuron were considered safe for the truck driver. When combined with the truck cabin, applications of etosyulfuron with TF nozzles and of metribuzin and s-metalochlor with TTI nozzles were also considered safe for the truck driver.

Streptococcus agalactiae was isolated from cultured tilapia in Brasil. All isolates reacted similarly in API 20 STREP system (bioMerieux, France) and Slidex strepto grouping Latex Aglutination test (bioMerieux, France). Bacterial isolates were submitted to the disc diffusion technique for the antimicrobial susceptibility test. Among nine tested drugs S. agalactiae samples were resistant to three-neomicin, nalidixic acid and gentamicin.

Mulita é o único composto termodinamicamente estável no sistema binário Al2O3 - SiO2, na faixa 70,5 a 74,0% em peso de Al2O3. Mulita metaestável na faixa de 74 a 83,6% de Al2O3, entretanto, pode ser obtida. Devido às suas excelentes propriedades físicas e mecânicas a altas temperaturas, como alto ponto de fusão, baixa expansão térmica, boa resistência à fratura e ao choque térmico, alta resistência à fluência, estabilidade térmica, baixa densidade e baixa constante dielétrica, tem tido um uso cada vez maior em corpos cerâmicos. O mineral mulita, porém, é raro e quase inexistente na natureza. Para atender a um mercado crescente, mulitas sintéticas são produzidas, por meio de misturas de pós de Al2O3 e SiO2 em escala molecular, usando técnica sol-gel, ou por meio da calcinação de minerais que contenham sílica e alumina em suas estruturas, os chamados alumino-silicatos. Normalmente estes minerais contêm impurezas e, muitas vezes, produzem uma mulita acompanhada de uma fase vítrea. Neste trabalho é feito o estudo alternativo para se obter uma mulita pura e de baixo custo por meio da calcinação do topázio Al2SiO4[Fx (OH)1-x]2. Topázio incolor e imperial foram utilizados para a produção de mulita. O topázio incolor não tem valor gemológico nem comercial e é abundante na natureza. Para o topázio imperial foram usados refugos provenientes de sua extração. O rendimento da calcinação foi alto, cerca de 80%, obtido a uma temperatura não muito alta, em torno de 1300 ºC, produzindo uma mulita muito pura e sem fase vítrea. A microestrutura da mulita obtida foi do tipo agulhas (whiskers de mulita) e apresentou alta porosidade. Essa microestrutura e porosidade são duas propriedades intrínsecas que estão associadas à decomposição do topázio. Este estudo mostrou que o topázio é uma fonte alternativa para a produção de mulita de baixo custo e de alta qualidade.

Mullite is the unique intermediate compound thermodynamically stable in the binary system Al2O3 - SiO2, in the weight range from 70.5 to 74.0% of Al2O3. However mullite metastable in the range from 74 to 83.6% of Al2O3 can be obtained. Due to its excellent physical and mechanical properties at high temperatures such as high melting point, low thermal expansion, good resistance to fracture and to thermal shock, high creep resistance, thermal stability, low density and low dielectric constant, it has become widely used in ceramic bodies. However, the mineral mullite is rare and almost nonexistent in the nature. To better assist to a growing market, synthetic mullites are produced, by mixtures of powders of Al2O3 and SiO2 in molecular scale, by using sol-gel technique, or by the calcination of minerals that contains silica and alumina in their structures, so called alumino silicates. Usually these minerals contain impurities, and as consequence, they produce mullite accompanied by a glassy phase. In this work showed that the topaz is another alternative to obtaining a pure and cheap mullite through the calcination of the topaz Al2SiO4 [Fx(OH)1-x]2 . Colorless topaz and imperial topaz were used for the mullite production. The colorless topaz doesn't have commercial or gemological value, it is quite abundant. For the imperial topaz it was used drosses of its extraction. The yield in the calcination was high, around 80%, and it was obtained at a temperature not very high, around 1300ºC, producing a very pure mullite without glassy phase. The microstructure of the obtained mullite was of needle type (mulitte whiskers) and high porosity. These two features are intrinsic properties that are associated to the topaz decomposition. This study showed that the topaz may be an inexpensive source for obtaining mullite of high quality.

Diarrhea in suckling piglets caused by Clostridium perfringens type A was diagnosed in industrial (technified) swine farms of the states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo (Brazil), based on isolation and identification of bacterium by biochemical tests, detection of alpha toxin in animal bioassays, and PCR. This seems to be the first report of clostridial enterotoxaemia in piglets by C. perfringens type A in Brazil and allowed specific procedures to control the disease.

The occurrence of Malassezia pachydermatis in the ears of dogs with otitis externa, comparing both direct exam and growth on culture method was evaluated. Auditory cerumen/exsudate specimens of 50 dogs with otitis externa were analized for M.pachydermatis. Stained by Giemsa, were prepared and microscopically analysed for budding yeasts. Each sample was cultured on modified Sabouraud glucose agar incubated at 28°C (82.4 F) for detection of M. pachydermatis. The frequency of M. pachydermatis from auditory meatus of otitic dogs was 79% (direct microscopy) and 88% (growth on modified Sabouraud glucose agar), and no difference between the results provided by both methods used in the fungus detection was observed.

Neste trabalho está descrito um surto de mamite fatal aguda produzida por Klebsiella pneumoniae em um rebanho leiteiro, localizado no Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Durante quatro meses foram observadas 14 mortes de vacas em lactação. Os sinais clínicos observados foram de enterotoxemia aguda e as mortes ocorriam entre 6 e 12 horas após o diagnóstico de mamite por meio do California mastitis test (CMT). Outros microrganismos como Staphylococcus aureus e Streptococcus agalactiae também foram isolados, entretanto eles não foram associados aos casos agudos e fatais de mamite. O controle incluiu medidas de higiene, tratamento de casos clínicos e terapia no período seco, além da vacinação preventiva utilizando-se uma vacina produzida com amostras de K. pneumoniae isoladas do rebanho

An outbreak of coliform mastitis is described in a dairy herd from the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. During a four-month period 14 fatal cases of Klebsiella pneumoniae-related mastitis were observed in a herd of 104 lactating cows. The symptoms included peracute enterotoxemia in which the cows died 6 to 12 h after the detection of mastitis by CMT. Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus agalactiae Streptococcus agalactiae were also isolated although could not be associated with cases of acute fatal mastitis. Milking practices were also evaluated. The milking machine was being used correctly and adequate precautions for hygiene and pre-milking and post-milking teat dipping were used. The organism was sensitive to gentamicin. Therapy for acute toxic mastitis required early action for the treatment of infections, involving corticosteroids and fluid therapy. The use of a Klebsiella vaccine produced from the microorganisms isolated from the herd, associated with hygiene measures, resulted in the control of the outbreak.

Comparou-se o teste de imunodifusão dupla em ágar gel (IDGA) pelo emprego do polissacarídeo "O" como antígeno com os testes de soroaglutinação rápida, soroaglutinação lenta, 2-mercaptoetanol, reação de fixação de complemento e antígeno tamponado acidificado no diagnóstico da brucelose, em bovinos infectados, não infectados e recém-vacinados com a amostra B-19, visando à diferenciação de anticorpos vacinais daqueles associados à infecção natural pela Brucella abortus. Nenhum dos testes realizados permitiu diferenciar precisamente anticorpos vacinais daqueles induzidos pela infecção brucélica e, nas condições do presente trabalho, a utilização do IDGA com este objetivo poderia levar à retenção de animais infectados no rebanho.

Agar gel immunodiffusion test (AGID) using the O-polysaccharide was compared with serologic tests used in brucellosis diagnosis in non-infected, infected and early vaccinated cattle with strain B-19, in order to differentiate vaccinal antibodies from those resulting of natural infection by Brucella abortus. None of the techniques can differentiate with absolute reliability the vaccinal antibodies from antibodies associated with natural infection to Brucella abortus. Moreover, the use of AGID with this objective would cause maintenance of infected animals in the herd.

Foram examinados 206 "swabs" cervicais e uterinos de éguas de várias raças, de diversas regiões do Estado de Minas Gerais, durante o período de 1986 a 1996. Cerca de 164 "swabs" foram positivos para a presença de microrganismos causadores de endometrites. Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus (25,7%) e Escherichia coli (15,1%) foram os principais agentes infecciosos isolados. Outros microrganismos presentes foram: Staphylococcus aureus (9,2%), Streptococcus alfa-hemolítico (9,2%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (3,9%), Staphylococcus coagulase negativo (6,3%), Bacillus spp. (1,9%), Rhodococcus equi (3,4%) e Proteus mirabilis (1,5%). As provas de susceptibilidade aos antimicrobianos revelaram que amicacina e gentamicina (70,2%), ampicilina (59,5%) e cloranfenicol (59,5%) foram os antibióticos de maior ação in vitro contra os microrganismos isolados.

This study examined 206 cervical and uterine swabs collected from infected mares from herds in the Minas Gerais State, Brazil, from 1986 to 1996. Amongst 164 successful isolations, 25.7% were identified as Streptococcus equi, subsp. zooepidemicus, and 15.1% as Escherichia coli, both considered the most important isolates. Other bacteria found included Staphylococcus aureus (9.2%), Streptococcus alpha-hemolytic (9.2%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (3.9%), coagulase negative Staphylococcus (6.3%), Bacillus spp. (1.9%), Rhodococcus equi (3.4%) and Proteus mirabilis (1.5%). The antibiotic susceptibility tests revealed amikacin and gentamicin (70.2%), ampicillin and chloramphenicol (59.5%) as the most effective in vitro antibiotics against these microorganisms.
