Resumo Anatomistas vegetais percebem o corpo da planta como resultado de processos dinâmicos e complexos que podem ser desviados ao longo do desenvolvimento da galha. Este desenvolvimento envolve respostas locais, mas em um continuum morfofisiológico com o órgão hospedeiro, o que pode ser estudado do ponto de vista anatômico. Revisitamos a história das galhas no Brasil, suas potencialidades morfogenéticas e integração com abordagens entomológicas, químicas, fisiológicas e ecológicas. No Brasil, espécies de Fabaceae, Myrtaceae, Melastomataceae e Asteraceae são as principais hospedeiras de diversos morfotipos de galhas classificados com base em suas formas tridimensionais. Ferramentas anatômicas usadas para mapear o destino de células e tecidos nas galhas revelam o potencial dos sistemas de tecidos vegetais para superexpressar ou inibir o desenvolvimento vegetal padrão. Técnicas anatômicas, citológicas, histoquímicas e imunocitoquímicas aprofundadas expandiram o conhecimento das características das galhas e das respostas das células vegetais. Abstract Plant anatomists perceive the plant body as the dynamic result of complex developmental processes which may deviate during gall development. Gall development involves local responses forming a morphophysiological continuum with the host plant organ, which can be addressed by anatomical studies. We revisited the history of galls in Brazil, as well as their morphogenetical potentialities and integration with entomological, chemical, physiological, and ecological approaches. The Fabaceae, Myrtaceae, Melastomataceae, and Asteraceae are the main hosts of the Brazilian gall morphotyes, which can be classified according to their three-dimensional shapess. Anatomical tools have been used to map cell and tissue fates in gall morphotypes, revealing the potential of plant tissue systems to overexpress or inhibit standard plant development. In-depth anatomical, cytological, histochemical, and immunocytochemical techniques have greatly expanded the knowledge of gall traits and plant cell responses. The new structures of galls hosted on leaves, stems, roots, and reproductive organs show consistent tissue specialization regarding the dermal and ground tissue systems, with the gall’s vascular system being connected to preexisting or newly formed bundles of the host plant. Resumo Samambaias são pouco relatadas como hospedeiras de galhas, e suas interações e relações multitroficas são comumente desconhecidas pela ciência. Atualmente, nos concentramos em Niphidium crassifolium (Polypodiaceae) que abriga galhas globoides nas folhas. As galhas em N. crassifolium são relatadas apenas nas regiões sul e sudeste do Brasil, onde também há uma discussão sobre a identidade do indutor da galha: seria um Cecidomyiidae-Diptera ou um Coccidae-Hemiptera? Esses dois grupos de insetos possuem características distintas e, consequentemente, suas galhas devem apresentar características anatômicas e histoquímicas distintas. Tais características podem ser utilizadas como ferramentas funcionais para corroborar a identificação dos táxons do galhador associado e avaliar sua distribuição geográfica. Nosso estudo teve como objetivo ampliar a distribuição conhecida de N. crassifolium e suas interações com base em inventário de artigos científicos e dados de herbário, e também testar a utilidade de características anatômicas e histoquímicas para propor a identidade galhador. Abstract Ferns have been poorly reported as hosts of gall inducers, and their multitrophic interactions and relationships are practically unknown to science. We focused on Niphidium crassifolium (Polypodiaceae) that hosts globoid leaf galls. The galls on N. crassifolium have only reported for the South and Southeast regions of Brazil, with a discussion regarding the identity of the gall inducer: is it a Cecidomyiidae-Diptera or to Coccidae-Hemiptera? These two insect groups have distinct characteristics and consequently their galls must have distinct anatomical and histochemical traits. Such traits may work out as functional tools to be used to confirm the taxa of the associated galling herbivore and to evaluate their geographic distribution. Our study aimed to expand the known distribution of N. crassifolium and its interactions based on an inventory of scientific articles and on herbarium data, and also to test the usefulness of anatomical and histochemical traits for proposing the identity of the gall inducer. The geographic distribution of N. crassifolium galls involves five South American countries, i.e., Bolivia, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, and Brazil. RESUMO Insetos galhadores podem alterar o padrão anatômico dos tecidos das suas plantas hospedeiras, induzindo morfotipos peculiares de galhas. Neste estudo, as modificações estruturais observadas nas galhas de Lopesia sp. em Mimosa tenuiflora assemelham-se àquelas evidenciadas em outras galhas de Cecidomyiidae, com dois compartimentos teciduais. No entanto, as camadas de parênquima no compartimento interno entre a zona mecânica e o tecido nutritivo são peculiares. O desenvolvimento da galha não bloqueia a síntese de quaisquer compostos detectados nos tecidos não galhados de M. tenuiflora, por meio de testes histoquímicos. Ligninas, polifenóis, alcaloides e terpenoides foram detectados no compartimento externo, sugerindo seu envolvimento na defesa química das galhas. Proteínas, açúcares redutores e lipídios foram detectados tanto no compartimento externo quanto no interno, e o tecido nutritivo é rico em açúcares redutores. Esse perfil está ligado à nutrição do galhador. O ambiente da Caatinga parece não impor restrições ao desenvolvimento da galha, mas, a parede celular periclinal espessa e o parênquima homogêneo parecem contribuir para o controle da umidade e da radiação, favorecendo à sobrevivência do inseto galhador.

ABSTRACT Gall-inducing insects can change the anatomical pattern of host plant tissues by inducing peculiar gall morphotypes. In this study, the structural changes observed in Lopesia galls on Mimosa tenuiflora resemble those found in other Cecidomyiidae, with two tissue compartments. Nevertheless, the parenchyma layers of the inner compartment, between the mechanical zone and the nutritive tissue, are peculiar. Gall development does not impair the synthesis of any compounds detected by histochemical tests on non-galled tissues of M. tenuiflora. Lignin, polyphenols, alkaloids and terpenoids were detected in the outer compartment, suggesting their involvement in chemical defence of galls. Proteins, reducing sugars and lipids were detected both in outer and inner compartments, whereas nutritive tissue is rich in reducing sugar. This profile is linked with the nutrition of the gall-inducing insect. The Caatinga environment does not seem to constrain the development of galls, but the thick periclinal cell wall and homogeneous parenchyma may contribute to the control of humidity and light radiation, thus favouring the survival of the gall-inducing insect.

Resumo: Este estudo investigou e caracterizou as galhas de uma área de Campo rupestre e de Cerrado no município de Caetité (BA) no período de agosto de 2015 a junho de 2016. Esta é a primeira contribuição para o conhecimento da diversidade de galhas de Campo rupestre neste estado. Foram registrados 48 morfotipos de galhas distribuídas em 17 espécies distintas, pertencentes a 13 gêneros e 21 famílias de plantas hospedeiras. A maior riqueza de galhas foi observada no Cerrado (n=39), quando comparada com o Campo rupestre (n=9). As famílias botânicas mais ricas em galhas foram Leguminosae, Malpighiaceae e Myrtaceae, com 10, 8 e 4 morfotipos, respectivamente. Os gêneros com maior diversidade de galhas foram Copaifera L. (n=6) (Leguminosae-Detarioideae), Croton L. (n=2) (Euphorbiaceae), Mimosa L. (n=2) (Leguminosae-Caesalpinioideae), Byrsonima Rich. ex Kunth (n=2) (Malpighiaceae) e Eugenia L. (n=2) (Myrtaceae). A espécie super-hospedeira foi Copaifera sabulicola J.A.S. Costa & L.P. Queiroz (n= 5). A maioria das galhas ocorreu nas folhas, sendo globoides, glabras, isoladas e uniloculares. A maioria dos indutores pertence à família Cecidomyiidae, enquanto que a fauna associada está representada por Hymenoptera e Lepidoptera. Foram registradas pela primeira vez galhas em Ocotea velutina (Mart. ex Ness) Rohwer (Lauraceae) e Miconia alborufescens Naudin (Melastomataceae). Os resultados encontrados indicam a necessidade de mais estudos para entender a dinâmica dos insetos indutores de galhas em Campos rupestres.

Abstract: We investigated insect galls in Rupestrian field and Cerrado vegetation in the municipality of Caetité (BA), Brazil, between August/2015 and June/2016. This is the first study of gall diversity in Rupestrian field vegetation in that state. We encountered 48 different morphotypes of galls, distributed among 17 different plant species belonging to 13 genera and 21 host plant families. The greatest gall richness was observed in Cerrado (n=39) as compared to Rupestrian field (n=9) vegetation. The principal botanical families observed with galls were Leguminosae, Malpighiaceae, and Myrtaceae, with 10, 8 and 4 morphotypes, respectively. The genera showing the greatest gall diversity were Copaifera L. (n=6) (Leguminosae-Detarioideae), Croton L. (n=2) (Euphorbiaceae), Mimosa L. (n=2) (Leguminosae-Caesalpinioideae), Byrsonima Rich. ex Kunth (n=2) (Malpighiaceae), and Eugenia L. (n=2) (Myrtaceae). The super-host species was Copaifera sabulicola J.A.S. Costa & L.P. Queiroz (n= 5). Most galls occurred on leaves, being globoid, glabrous, isolated, and unilocular. Most gall-inducing insect species belong to the Cecidomyiidae family, while the associated fauna was represented by Hymenoptera and Lepidoptera. We recorded here for the first time galls on Ocotea velutina (Mart. ex Ness) Rohwer (Lauraceae) and Miconia alborufescens Naudin (Melastomataceae). The results indicate the need for more studies to understand the dynamics of the insect-induced galls in Rupestrian field.

Inventariamos e caracterizamos os tipos de galhas, insetos galhadores e plantas hospedeiras da Serra Geral entre agosto de 2013 a julho de 2014. Duas fitofisionomias, cerrado sensu stricto e de transição caatinga-cerrado, foram examinadas ao longo de trilhas è procura de galhas entomógenas, durante quatro horas por visita, totalizando 48 horas de esforço amostral. Um total de 49 morfotipos de galhas foi encontrado em 14 espécies vegetais pertencentes a 18 gêneros e 13 famílias. Fabaceae e Malpighiaceae foram as famílias botânicas com maior riqueza de galhas, com 22 e 10 morfotipos, respectivamente. Os gêneros de planta hospedeira mais ricos em galhas foram Copaifera L. (n=10), Bauhinia Benth. (n=6) e Mimosa L. (n=4). As galhas foram encontradas em folhas, gemas e caules. A maioria das galhas foram globoides, glabras, isoladas e uniloculares. Os galhadores pertencem ès ordens Coleoptera, Diptera e Lepidoptera, sendo os insetos da família Cecidomyiidae (Diptera) os indutores mais frequentes e diversificados. A fauna associada incluiu parasitoides (Hymenoptera), sucessores (Formicidae, Hymenoptera) e predadores (Pseudoscorpiones), obtidos de 13, dois e um morfotipos de galhas, respectivamente. Cinco táxons de plantas são registrados como hospedeiras de galhas pela primeira vez.

We inventoried and characterized the kinds of gall, gall-inducing insects and host plants from Serra Geral between August 2013 and July 2014. Two phytophysiognomies, cerrado sensu stricto and caatinga-cerrado, were examined monthly along transects during ca. 4 hours per visit, totaling 48 hours of sampling effort. A total of 49 gall morphotypes were found on 14 species of host plants in 18 genera and 13 families. Fabaceae and Malpighiaceae were the families with the most galls, with 22 and 10 gall morphotypes, respectively. The genera of host plant with the greatest richness of galls were Copaifera L. (n=10), Bauhinia Benth. (n=6), and Mimosa L. (n=5). Galls were found on leaves, buds and stems. The majority of the galls were globoid, glabrous, isolated, and one-chambered. The inducers belong to Coleoptera, Diptera, and Lepidoptera, Cecidomyiidae (Diptera) being the most frequent and diverse gall-inducers. The associated fauna included parasitoids (Hymenoptera), successors (Formicidae), and predators (Pseudoscorpiones), obtained from 13, 2, and 1 gall morphotypes, respectively. Five plant taxa are recorded as hosts of gall-inducing insects for the first time.
