Abstract Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of chewing gums containing CPP-ACP in remineralisation of demineralised enamel around orthodontic brackets. Material and Methods: Enamel blocks from 120 bovine incisors were used. The blocks were flattened and polished, followed by the development of incipient subsurface caries. The blocks have been subjected to a baseline microhardness analysis. Orthodontic brackets were bonded to the exposed area of the blocks, reserving an area for hardness analysis. An in situ crossover (three-way crossover phases of 21 days with an interval of one week between them), controlled, randomised and blind experimental model was used, with the participation of 12 volunteers divided into groups: G1 – negative control group, without chewing gum; G2 – conventional sugar-free chewing gum, without CPP-ACP (placebo); and G3 – sugar-free chewing gum with CPP-ACP. The following parameters were analysed: superficial linear (Ra), volumetric roughness (Sa), and superficial structural loss, which was indicated by Gap measurement (difference between the healthy and treated area). Statistical tests used were the Friedman, Wilcoxon and Shapiro-Wilk, Kruskal Wallis' nonparametric tests and ANOVA. Results: There was a significant reduction in enamel microhardness after demineralisation in all the groups (p<0.05). This deleterious effect was attenuated in the three groups after the final evaluation, although there were no statistical differences (p<0.05); however, the final values did not return to the baseline values (p<0.05). Conclusion: Chewing gum containing CPP-ACP did not promote in situ remineralisation of demineralised enamel around orthodontic brackets.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a influência da ancoragem mono e bicortical e do diâmetro dos mini-implantes (MIs) na estabilidade primária desses dispositivos. Métodos: 60 MIs autoperfurantes foram distribuídos em seis grupos, de acordo com o diâmetro (1,5 mm, 1,8 mm ou 2,0 mm) e tipo de ancoragem (monocortical e bicortical), e inseridos em costela bovina. A estabilidade primária foi avaliada pelos testes de torque de inserção, micromobilidade e resistência à tração. ANOVA e/ou análise de Tukey foram usadas para realizar comparações intergrupos (p< 0,05). Estatística não paramétrica (Kruskal-Wallis e Mann-Whitney) foi realizada quando a normalidade não foi encontrada (p< 0,05). Resultados: MIs com diâmetros maiores e ancorados bicorticalmente apresentaram maior estabilidade primária em relação ao torque de inserção (p< 0,05) e micromobilidade (p< 0,05). Apenas o diâmetro do MI influenciou os resultados do teste de resistência à tração. MIs de maior diâmetro apresentaram melhor retenção nos testes de resistência à tração (p< 0,001), independentemente da ancoragem mono ou bicortical. Conclusões: a estabilidade primária do MI é dependente de seu diâmetro e tipo de ancoragem. A ancoragem bicortical apresentou maior estabilidade quando comparada à ancoragem monocortical, independentemente das demais variáveis.

ABSTRACT Objective: Assess the influence of mono- and bicortical anchorage and diameter of mini-implants (MIs) on the primary stability of these devices. Methods: 60 self-drilling MIs were distributed in six groups according to diameter (1.5mm, 1.8mm or 2.0mm) and type of anchorage (monocortical and bicortical) in bovine rib. The primary stability was evaluated by insertion torque, micromobility and pull-out strength tests. ANOVA and/or Tukey analysis were used to conduct intergroup comparisons (p< 0.05). Non-parametric statistics (Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney) were performed when normality was not found (p< 0.05). Results: MIs with larger diameters and bicortical anchorage showed greater primary stability regarding insertion torque (p< 0.05) and micromobility (p< 0.05). Only MI diameter had an effect on the pull-out strength test. Larger diameter MIs presented better retention in pull-out strength tests (p< 0.001), regardless of mono- or bicortical anchorage. Conclusions: MI primary stability is dependent on its diameter and type of anchorage. Bicortical anchorage showed greater stability when compared with monocortical anchorage, independently of other variables.

RESUMO OBJETIVOS: Comparar a relação entre indicadores antropométricos e triglicerídeos séricos e identificar os indicadores mais associados à hipertrigliceridemia em idosos. MÉTODOS: Estudo transversal de base populacional realizado com 316 idosos (> 60 anos), em 2011. Foram verificados os triglicerídeos (sistema Accutrend(r) Plus), o índice de massa corporal, a razão cintura-quadril, a razão cintura-estatura, o índice de conicidade, o índice de adiposidade corporal, a dobra cutânea tricipital e as circunferências da cintura e da panturrilha. RESULTADOS: As análises de regressão linear mostraram que a razão cintura-quadril (6,5%), nas mulheres e o índice de massa corporal (12,3%), nos homens, foram os indicadores que mais explicaram a variabilidade dos triglicerídeos. A regressão de Poisson mostrou que o índice de massa corporal, a circunferência da panturrilha e a dobra cutânea tricipital foram os indicadores associados a hipertrigliceridemia (triglicérides > 150 mg/dl), no sexo feminino. Para os homens, à exceção da razão cintura-quadril e do índice de conicidade, os demais indicadores foram associados à hipertrigliceridemia. CONCLUSÕES: Os indicadores antropométricos que melhor discriminam a variabilidade dos triglicerídeos diferem entre os sexos. O índice de massa corporal, a circunferência da panturrilha e a dobra cutânea tricipital se destacam como os melhores indicadores antropométricos para hipertrigliceridemia em idosos de ambos os sexos.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the relation between anthropometric indicators and serum triglycerides, and to identify the indicators most strongly associated with hypertriglyceridemia in older adults. METHODS: A population-based, cross-sectional study conducted with 316 subjects (> 60 years old) in 2011. The following were checked: triglycerides, body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, waist-to-height ratio, conicity index, body adiposity index, triceps skinfold thickness, and waist and calf circumference. RESULTS: Linear regression analyses showed that waist-to-hip ration (R2 = 0.065) in women and body mass index (R2 = 0.123) in men were the indicators that best correlated with triglyceride. Poisson's regression showed that body mass index, calf circumference, and triceps skinfold thickness were the only indicators associated with hypertriglyceridemia (triglycerides > 150 mg/dl) among female subjects. For male subjects, with the exception of waist-to-hip ratio and the conicity index, all other indicators were associated with hypertriglyceridemia. CONCLUSION: The anthropometric indicators that best explain the variability of triglyceride differ according to sex. Body mass index, calf circumference, and triceps skinfold thickness are the best anthropometric indicators for hypertriglyceridemia in older adults of both sexes.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as alterações verticais e ântero-posterior pós-tratamento da maloclusão Classe II esquelética com diferentes padrões maxilar de pacientes tratados com aparelho Thurow modificado. Quarenta e cinco pacientes (22 meninas e 23 meninos) com Classe II esquelética e ângulo SN.GoGn≤35 e diferente padrão maxilar (n=15),sendo: maxila retrusiva (SNA<80°), normal (SNA= 80°-84°) ou protrusiva (SNA>84°) e idade média de 9 anos no pré-tratamento (T1) e 9 anos e 10 meses no pós-tratamento (T2), foram tratados com aparelho Thurow modificado de tração cervical com parafuso expansor e arco facial externo com dobra de 10° a 20° em relação ao arco interno. Foi empregado a força de 500 gf e uso de 12 a 14 h/dia, com ajustes quinzenais. Análise de variância ANOVA seguido pelo teste post-hoc de Tukey e o teste de Kruskal-Wallis seguido por Mann-Whitney foram empregados (p<0.05). Nas mudanças obtidas da fase T1 para T2, não foram encontradas diferenças estatísticas entre os grupos maxila protusiva, normal e retrusiva para as variáveis SNB, SN.GoGn, 1.NA, overjet, overbite e discrepância de classe II (direita e esquerda) (p>0.05). As medidas angulares SNA e ANB no grupo maxila protusiva foi significativamente maior do que nos grupos maxila normal e retrusiva (p<0.01). Entretanto, esses valores no grupo maxila normal não diferiram do grupo maxila retrusiva (p>0.05). Dentro dos limites do estudo, pode-se concluir que o aparelho de Thurow modificado de tração cervical foi eficiente na correção da Classe II esquelética independente do padrão maxilar. A mandíbula não teve rotação significativa durante o tratamento.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the post-treatment anteroposterior and vertical alterations in skeletal Class II malocclusion with different maxillary patterns in patients treated with modified Thurow appliance. Forty-five patients (22 girls and 23 boys) with skeletal Class II and angle SN.GoGn ≤ 35 and different maxillary patterns (n=15), as follows: retrusive (SNA<80°), normal (SNA=80°- 84°) or protrusive (SNA>84°) maxilla; mean age 9 years at pre-treatment (T1) and 9 years and 10 months at post-treatment (T2), were treated with modified Thurow cervical traction appliance, with expander screw and extraoral face bow with 10° to 20° fold in relation to the intraoral arch. Force of 500 gf was applied and use for 12 to 14 h/day, with fortnightly adjustments. Analysis of variance ANOVA followed by post-hoc Tukey and Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by Mann-Whitney were used (α=5%). In changes obtained from stage T1 to T2, no statistically significant differences were found among the groups Protrusive, normal and retrusive maxilla for the variables SNB, SN.GoGn, 1.NA, overjet, overbite and Class II discrepancy (right and left) (p>0.05). Angular measurements SNA and ANB in the protrusive maxilla group were significantly greater than in the normal and retrusive maxilla groups (p<0.01). However, in the normal maxilla group these values did not differ significantly from those of the retrusive maxilla group (p>0.05). Within the limits of this study, it may be concluded that the modified Thurow cervical traction appliance was efficient for the correction of skeletal Class II irrespective of the maxillary pattern. The mandible had no significant rotation during treatment.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar a resistência de placas de contenção tipo Hawley em três diferentes configurações do acrílico, a fim de se avaliar se o formato deste ou a adição de fio no seu interior interfere na sua resistência. MATERIAL E MÉTODO: Foram confeccionadas 45 placas de contenção móveis tipo Hawley, divididas em três grupos (n=15): Grupo 1 - acrílico recobrindo todo o palato duro; Grupo 2 - placa com alívio na região mais profunda do palato, deixando-a com uma conformação em "U" e Grupo 3 - similar as do Grupo 2, com a adição de fio 0.7mm de 2cm no interior do acrílico na região da rugosidade palatina. A resistência à compressão foi testada em uma máquina universal de ensaios mecânicos (Stable Microsystems, London, United Kingdom), medindo-se a força aplicada até que ocorresse a ruptura da placa. RESULTADO: o Grupo 1 foi o que apresentou maior resistência, com uma mediana cerca de cinco vezes maior que o Grupo 2 e três vezes maior que o Grupo 3. CONCLUSÃO: a redução do acrílico nas placas de contenção está diretamente relacionada com a redução em sua resistência à compressão; a inclusão do fio ortodôntico no interior do acrílico aumenta a resistência da placa, sendo uma boa alternativa quando se deseja maior conforto ao paciente sem que haja detrimento das características mecânicas dos aparelhos de contenção.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate resistance of Hawley retainers in three different acrylic configurations in order to evaluate if its format or the addition of internal wire interferes in its resistance. MATERIAL AND METHOD: 45 Hawley retainers were fabricated, divided into three groups (n = 15): Group 1 - acrylic covering the entire hard palate, Group 2 - plate with relief at the deepest region of the palate, leaving it with a "U" conformation and Group 3 - similar to Group 2, with the addition of 0.7mm wire 2cm internally of the acrylic at the region of the palatine ridges. The compressive strength was tested in a universal mechanical testing machine (Stable Microsystems, London, United Kingdom), measuring the applied force until plate rupture occurred. The differences between the formats being compared by the Kruskal-Wallis test. The significance level was set at 5% (α = 0.05). RESULT: Group 1 showed the highest resistance, with a mean of about five times higher than Group 2 and three times higher than Group 3. CONCLUSION: acrylic reduction in dental retainer plates is directly related to the reduction of its compressive strength, the inclusion of orthodontic wire inside the acrylic increases the resistance of the plate, being a good alternative when more comfort is wanted for the patient without loss of the mechanical characteristics of the dental retainers.
