ABSTRACT This study aimed to analyze the physical characteristics of eggs from free-range hens of the Sura variety. One hundred eggs underwent assessment of various physical parameters, namely, whole egg weight, equatorial diameter, egg height, shell color, presence of cracks via candling, air chamber height, yolk color, presence of flesh and blood spots, albumen width and length, yolk diameter, yolk weight, and shell weight. Additional analyses included determining the albumen weight (calculated by subtracting the weights of the shell and yolk from the total egg weight), percentages of egg components, shape index, and shell index. Statistical analyses were conducted using GLM SAS software (SAS Institute). The results revealed distinct physical traits; eggs from the Sura variety, regardless of size class (large or small), typically have a more rounded shape, light brown shells, and more orange yolks. RESUMO Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar as características físicas dos ovos de galinhas caipiras var. Suras. Foram analisados um total de 100 ovos, onde diversos parâmetros físicos, tais como pesagem do ovo inteiro, medição do diâmetro equatorial e altura do ovo, classificação da cor da casca, miragem para verificação da presença de fendas na casca, determinação da altura da câmara de ar, classificação da cor da gema, verificação da presença de manchas de carne e manchas de sangue, medição da largura e comprimento do albúmen, medição do diâmetro da gema, pesagem da gema, e pesagem da casca. Foram posteriormente determinados o peso do albúmen por diferença entre o peso do ovo e pesos da casca e gema, determinação percentual dos diferentes constituintes do ovo, shape index (índice de forma) e shell index (índice de casca). RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar diferentes modelos não lineares para o ajuste das curvas de crescimento de animais da raça Nelore Mocho e estimar os parâmetros genéticos para os componentes da curva de crescimento. Foram utilizados dados de peso corporal-idade do nascimento aos 650 dias de idades de 6.717 bovinos da raça Nelore Mocho, pertencentes à Associação Brasileira de Criadores de Zebu (ABCZ), referentes ao período de 1980 e 2011. Quatro modelos não lineares (Brody, Bertalanffy, Logístico e Gompertz) foram ajustados e comparados pelo coeficiente de determinação ajustado (R2adj), desvio médio absoluto dos resíduos (DMA), raiz quadrada do quadrado médio do resíduo (RMSE), critério de informação de Akaike (AIC) e o critério de informação bayesiano (BIC). Para estimativas dos parâmetros genéticos e valores genéticos do peso assintótico (A), constante de integração (B) e taxa de maturação (K), utilizou-se o método de inferência Bayesiana. O modelo Brody apresentou os menores valores de DMA, RMSE, AIC e BIC e o maior R2adj. As estimativas de herdabilidade foram 0,11; 0,16 e 0,30 para os parâmetros A, B e K, respectivamente, enquanto as correlações genéticas foram de 0,01 (A-B), -0,91 (A-K) e 0,24 (B-K). Constatou-se que o modelo Brody forneceu o melhor ajuste. O parâmetro K apresenta variabilidade genética suficiente para seleção no rebanho. Animais com maior peso na idade adulta tendem a apresentar menores taxas de crescimento. Apesar da baixa estimativa de herdabilidade do parâmetro A, observou-se ganhos genéticos, indicando que a seleção está sendo eficiente sobre o peso assintótico.

ABSTRACT This study was undertaken to compare different non-linear models for fitting growth curves of Polled Nellore animals as well as to estimate genetic parameters for the components of the growth curve. The study involved body weight-age data of 6,717 Polled Nellore cattle from birth to 650 days of age, which belonged to the Brazilian Association of Zebu Breeders (ABCZ), corresponding to the period from 1980 to 2011. Four non-linear models (Brody, Bertalanffy, Logistic, and Gompertz) were fitted and compared by the adjusted coefficient of determination (R2adj), mean absolute deviation of residuals (MAD), root mean square error (RMSE), Akaike information criterion (AIC), and Bayesian information criterion (BIC). To estimate the genetic parameters and genetic values of asymptotic weight (A), integration constant (B), and maturation rate (K), the Bayesian inference method was adopted. The Brody model showed the lowest values of MAD, RMSE, AIC, and BIC and the highest R2adj. Heritability estimates for parameters A, B, and K were 0.11, 0.16, and 0.30, respectively, whereas genetic correlations were 0.01 (A-B), -0.91 (A-K), and 0.24 (B-K). The Brody model provided the best fit. The K parameter shows enough genetic variability for selection in the herd. Heavier animals in adulthood tend to exhibit lower growth rates. Despite the low heritability estimate of parameter A, there were genetic gains, indicating that selection is being efficient on asymptotic weight.

RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar a idade da pesagem e a qualidade do ajuste de modelos não lineares a dados longitudinais para descrever o padrão de crescimento de fêmeas Anglonubiana. Pesos de 104 animais do nascimento até 60 meses de idade, foram agrupados em 10 classes, com intervalos de seis meses. Em cada classe estimou-se parâmetros A, B e K com modelos Brody, Gompertz, Logístico e Von Bertalanffy. Realizou-se análise de variância com fatorial (10 classes x 4 modelos) com 104 repetições, considerando-se os três parâmetros como características. Baseou-se na significância da média dos parâmetros nas classes para identificar a melhor idade de pesagem. Não ocorreu interação "classe-modelos". As médias dos três parâmetros nas classes com pesos registrados até 30 meses diferiram entre si (P<0,05), indicando influência de pesagens inferior a essa idade na curva estimada, independente do modelo. Para identificar modelos com melhor ajuste aos dados, utilizou-se os valores do QMR, DMA, R2 e RC que cada um apresentou na classe com pesagens até 30 meses. Constatou-se como sequência de melhor ajuste: Logístico, Brody, Von Bertalanffy e Gompertz. O modelo Logístico estima menor peso assintótico e Brody o maior. Pesagens até 30 meses de idade se adequam à análise do padrão de crescimento de cabras com modelos não lineares.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to determine the optimum age at last weighing and compare the goodness of fit of nonlinear models used to fit longitudinal weight-age data to describe the growth pattern of Anglo-Nubian does. Weights of 104 animals from birth to 60 months of age were grouped into 10 age groups at six-month intervals. In each age group, parameters A (asymptotic weight), B (integration constant), and K (maturity index) were estimated using the Brody, Gompertz, logistic, and von Bertalanffy models. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance in a factorial design (10 age groups × 4 nonlinear models). The age group × model interaction was not significant. Mean estimates of A, B, and K were significantly different between age groups up to 30 months (p < 0.05), indicating that the estimated curve is affected by weights taken before this age independent of the model. The values of mean squared error (MSE), mean absolute deviation (MAD), coefficient of determination (R2) and Rate of convergence (RC) at each age group up to 30 months were compared to determine the goodness of fit of nonlinear models. The ranking of fit was logistic, Brody, von Bertalanffy, and Gompertz. The logistic and Brody models respectively estimated the smallest and largest asymptotic weight. Longitudinal weight records taken until 30 months of age are most appropriate for estimating the growth of Anglo-Nubian does using nonlinear models.

RESUMO. Objetivou-se caracterizar o perfil da pecuária de corte no Estado do Piauí para inferência acerca do registro zootécnico dos animais para inserção em sistema de rastreabilidade. Os dados foram coletados por meio da aplicação de questionário semiestruturado de múltipla escolha a 400 pecuaristas em todas as microrregiões do estado, nos meses de maio e novembro de 2012. As perguntas continham os seguintes direcionadores: perfil da propriedade e dos produtores, condições zootécnicas dos rebanhos e condições técnicas no tocante ao registro zootécnico. O cenário da pecuária bovina é caracterizado predominantemente pela atividade familiar, com a maioria dos produtores apresentando idade superior a 50 anos, que se encontram sem grandes perspectivas de inovação tecnológica, inseridos num ambiente onde a renovação de recursos humanos enfrenta dificuldades. A análise dos dados constatou a prevalência de rebanhos com até 50 bovinos explorados em propriedades com até 50 ha, sem identificação individual dos animais. Esses resultados, aliados ao fato do pecuarista desconhecer tecnicamente a importância do registro zootécnico e da rastreabilidade, indicam a baixa capacidade da atividade ser inserida em um ambiente informatizado.

ABSTRACT. The objective of this study was to characterize the beef cattle farming profile in the State of Piauí for inference about the zootechnical record of animals for insertion into a traceability system. Data were collected through a semi-structured multiple choice questionnaire applied to 400 cattle breeders in all microregions of the state, in May and November 2012. The questions contained the following indicators: profile of the property and the breeder, herd conditions and technical conditions on herd registration. The cattle-raising scenario is predominantly characterized by family activity, with the majority of producers over 50 years of age, who are without great prospects for technological innovation, inserted in an environment where human resource renewal faces difficulties. Data analysis verified the prevalence of herds with up to 50 cattle farmed on properties with up to 50 ha, without individual identification of the animals. These results, coupled with the fact that the cattle breeders are technically unaware of the importance of the zootechnical record and the traceability, indicate the low probability of the activity to be inserted in a computerized environment.
