ABSTRACT Products such as milk and cheese produced by hand and sold by small producers in open markets and at home are a reality in Brazil, despite legal prohibitions. In many cases, this leads to the production of food without hygienic conditions, which may constitute an important source of transmission of foodborne diseases and a danger to public health. This study proposes to examine the hygienic-sanitary quality of milk and cheese sold illegally in municipalities of northern Mato Grosso, Brazil, to undertake a phenotypical investigation of the presence of resistance of isolated colonies to antimicrobials and to detect the production of β-lactamase enzymes: extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL), AmpC β-lactamases (AmpC) and carbapenemases. The 25 milk and 37 cheese samples analyzed were subjected to the most probable number (MPN) test, isolation on eosin-methylene blue agar (EMB) agar and Escherichia coli identification by biochemical tests and disk diffusion test. Results showed that 76% of the milk samples and 67.57% of the cheese samples had thermotolerant coliform counts above the value allowed by the legislation. The milk and cheese isolates showed 15.79 and 5.88% resistance, respectively, to at least one of the tested antimicrobials. No β-lactamase enzyme production was observed in the isolates.

A leucose enzoótica bovina (LEB) é uma enfermidade causada por um retrovírus e pode apresentar um quadro de linfocitose persistente ou linfossarcomas em bovinos adultos. Este estudo teve como objetivo realizar um levantamento sorológico, por meio do teste de imunodifusão em gel agar (IDGA), de bovinos de corte e de leite, bem como de animais puros de origem (POs), criados nos municípios de Sinop e Sorriso, a fim de se conhecer a distribuição e a ocorrência de anticorpos antivírus da LEB na referida região. De acordo com os resultados obtidos, foi verificado que a prevalência acumulada nas três categorias foi de 11,78% de soropositivos, sendo 12,19% para bovinos de corte, 11,20% para o rebanho leiteiro e 9,09% em animais POs. Dessa forma, este estudo demonstrou que a LEB se faz presente no estado de Mato Grosso, sendo possível verificar que a LEB apresenta índices de prevalência abaixo dos encontrados em outras regiões do país.

ABSTRACT The enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL) is a disease caused by a retrovirus and can be presented as a persistent lymphocytosis, or bovine lymphosarcomas in adult cattle. This study aimed to conduct a serological survey of beef cattle, dairy herd and in purebred cattle raised in the cities of Sinop and Sorriso, in order to understand the distribution and occurrence of antibodies anti-EBL virus in that region. According to the results obtained, the prevalence in the three categories was 11.78% of serum positives, where 12.19% for beef cattle, 11.02% for the dairy herd and 9.09% in purebred cattle animals. Thus, this study demonstrated that EBL is present in Mato Grosso State, and EBL's prevalence rates lower than others reported in several regions of the country.

Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a eficácia de uma nova formulação “spot-on” à base de fipronil na terapêutica e prevenção do parasitismo porRhipicephalus sanguineus em cães naturalmente infestados. Foi realizada contagem dos carrapatos no momento da aplicação do produto e semanalmente após o tratamento (eficácia terapêutica), bem como avaliando sua reinfestação (eficácia preventiva). Perfis terapêuticos e preventivos sugerem que a formulação controla o parasitismo por R. sanguineus em cães por pelo menos 42 dias após o tratamento.

This study was conducted to show the effectiveness of a novel formulation of fipronil in a spot-on formulation for the therapeutic and preventive control of Rhipicephalus sanguineus in naturally infested dogs. Ticks on all dogs were counted at the moment of treatment and weekly after treatment (therapeutic efficacy) or infestation (preventive efficacy). The profile of the therapeutic efficacy forRhipicephalus sanguineus suggested that the formulation was able to control the Ixodid species for at least 42 days after the treatment.

Este estudo teve por objetivo relatar o isolamento de espécies enterobacterianas em segmentos de Stomoxys calcitrans coletadas, em propriedades rurais de dois municípios do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Nove das 28 espécies isoladas e identificadas ainda não haviam sido descritas na mosca dos estábulos. Algumas dessas espécies possuem destacado potencial patogênico ao homem e aos animais ou são oportunistas e outras não foram descritas como causadoras de enfermidades de importância médica ou veterinária.

This study aimed to report enterobacterial species recovered from body segments of Stomoxys calcitrans collected in dairy farms from counties of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Nine of the isolated and identified species were not yet described in stable flies, according to the worldwide literature. Some of them are known to present pathogenical potential to man and other animals, while others were not described causing diseases of medical or veterinary importance.
