RESUMO Objetivo Propor uma metodologia de análise dos dados gerados por um instrumento de medição da pressão de sucção não-nutritiva do recém-nascido. Método Estudo observacional analítico, transversal com dados de 24 recém-nascidos a termo sem comprometimentos. Após a avaliação clínica foram analisadas três coletas de cada neonato empregando-se o referido instrumento, com duração de 2 minutos e intervalo de 2 minutos entre elas. Os parâmetros definidos foram extraídos por meio de um programa desenvolvido em Matlab®. Os resultados foram obtidos pela análise e comparação de 12 variáveis ao nível de confiança de 5%. Foi realizada ainda comparação das análises manual e computadorizada por meio do coeficiente de correlação intraclasse. Resultados A comparação múltipla entre os três momentos de coleta, mostrou que as diferenças estatísticas significantes ocorreram entre as coletas um e dois e dois e três. Ao se analisar e comparar cada variável separadamente, notou-se que a segunda coleta apresentou: maior número de grupos de sucção, maior número de sucções, menor tempo para iniciar os grupos de sucção, maior tempo de grupos de sucção, menor número de sucções esporádicas, valores de pressão média maiores e com menor desvio padrão, maior número de pausas com tempo de pausas menor. O coeficiente de correlação intraclasse revelou concordância quase perfeita para os 12 parâmetros avaliados. Conclusão As 12 variáveis analisadas mostram-se relevantes, especialmente na segunda coleta. ABSTRACT Purpose To propose a methodology for analyzing data generated by an instrument measuring non-nutritive sucking pressure in newborns. Methods An analytical observational study was developed, with a cross-sectional design, considering the data collected from 24 full-term newborns without complications. Three collections from each neonate were analyzed, with duration of 2 minutes and a 2-minute interval between them. The defined parameters were extracted using a program developed in Matlab®. The results were obtained by analyzing and comparing 12 variables at a 5% confidence level. Comparison of manual and computerized analyzes was also carried out using the intraclass correlation coefficient. Results The multiple comparison between the three collection moments showed that the significant statistical differences occurred between collections one and two and two and three. When analyzing and comparing each variable separately, it was noted that the second collection showed: greater number of sucking groups, greater number of suctions, less time to start the sucking groups, longer time of sucking groups, less number of sporadic suctions, higher mean pressure values and with less standard deviation, more number of pauses with shorter time of pauses. The intraclass correlation coefficient revealed almost perfect agreement for the 12 evaluated parameters. Conclusion The 12 variables analyzed are relevant, especially in the second collection. RESUMO Objetivo: analisar a validade de conteúdo e de constructo do instrumento de avaliação do desempenho da língua em atividades associadas a jogos digitais. Métodos: para análise de conteúdo, dez fonoaudiólogos responderam um questionário em que cada item do intrumento e o conjunto de itens foram julgados quanto à sua representatividade. Foram calculados o índice de validade de conteúdo e a estatística kappa modificada. Para analisar a validade de constructo, 20 participantes, entre 8 e 13 anos (10 com força de língua adequada e 10 com alteração de força) realizaram uma atividade de jogo com o T-Station, com 12 alvos, 2 N de força e 5 s de sustentação da contração para cada alvo. O desempenho em cada item do instrumento foi comparado entre os grupos. Resultados: a maioria dos itens obteve pontuação satisfatória na avaliação dos fonoaudiólogos. Um item foi removido do instrumento. Os participantes com força da língua reduzida apresentaram pior desempenho do que os com força normal, com diferença estatistica para três itens do instrumento. Conclusão: o instrumento mostrou-se válido como método de avaliação do desempenho nas atividades associadas ao T-Station.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to analyze the content and construct validity of an instrument for tongue performance assessment in activities associated with digital games. Methods: to analyze content validity, ten speech-language pathologists answered a questionnaire in which each item of the instrument and the set of items were judged as to its representativeness. The content validity index and the modified Kappa statistics were calculated. To analyze construct validity, 20 participants, with age between 8 and 13 years, (10 children with weak tongues and 10 children with normal tongue strength) performed a game activity with the T-Station, involving 12 targets with 2 N of strength and 5 s of time for sustained contraction for each target. The performance was compared, for each item of the instrument, between groups. Results: most of the items obtained satisfactory score according to the speech-language pathologist’s evaluation. Children with reduced tongue force had a poorer performance than those with normal tongue force, with a statistically significant difference in three items of the instrument. Conclusion: the instrument proved to be valid as a method for evaluating performance in activities associated with the T-Station.

Resumo Escoliose idiopática do adolescente (EIA) atinge de 2% a 4% de jovens no Brasil. Repetidas exposições aos exames radiológicos, no acompanhamento desta deformidade, podem ser danosos à saúde. O objetivo deste estudo é apresentar um protocolo de fotogrametria, como método não ionizante para quantificação da escoliose, e relacioná-lo ao método radiológico de Cobb. Dezesseis indivíduos portadores de escoliose idiopática (21,4 ± 6,1 anos de idade e 19,8±0,2 de índice de massa corporal) foram submetidos à radiografia posteroanterior do tronco, de pé e, posteriormente, fotografia do tronco posterior, após receberem marcadores anatômicos nos processos espinhosos das vértebras C7 até L5. As imagens foram encaminhadas para análise independente de dois examinadores treinados na quantificação da escoliose para o tipo de imagem recebida. A média angular torácica de Cobb e de fotogrametria foram 36,14° e 36,43°, respectivamente. A diferença média entre os métodos foi de 4,1°. Não houve diferença estatisticamente significante (p-valor < 5%) entre eles. A fotogrametria, por ser não ionizante, ter baixo custo e ser portátil, poderá representar uma alternativa ao método radiológico. Novos estudos são necessários no aprimoramento das técnicas não ionizantes no rastreamento da EIA.

Sixteen individuals with idiopathic scoliosis (age: 21.4 ± 6.1 years, body mass index: 19.8 ± 0.2 kg/m2) underwent standing posteroanterior X-ray examination of the trunk. Additionally, markers were placed on the spinal processes of the C7 to L5 vertebrae, and posterior trunk photographs were taken. All images were sent for independent analysis by two examiners who were trained in the quantification of scoliosis. The average of the thoracic curvature evaluated through the photogrammetry and Cobb methods were 36.43° and 36.14°, respectively. With an average difference of 4.1°, the methods were not statistically different (p < 0.05). As a non-ionizing method that is low cost and portable, photogrammetry may represent a suitable alternative to the radiological method. Further studies are needed for the improvement of non-ionizing techniques in AIS screening.

RESUMO Objetivo Avaliar a reprodutibilidade do Forling, instrumento portátil para medição da força axial da língua. Método Foi realizada a medição da força axial da língua de 49 participantes, 30 mulheres e 19 homens, com idades entre 18 e 25 anos por meio do Forling portátil. As medições foram realizadas em três dias com intervalos de 7±2 dias. Em cada dia, foram realizadas três coletas com duração de 7 segundos e intervalos de 1 minuto. Na análise, empregou-se coeficiente de variação, teste pareado de Wilcoxon e coeficiente de correlação intraclasse. Foram analisados os valores de força máxima e média da língua, sendo a comparação dos valores realizada em três abordagens: utilizando-se a média dos três valores; a média dos dois maiores valores; e o maior valor de cada medição. Resultados Na análise da força média, o coeficiente de variação foi considerado desejável e o coeficiente de correlação intraclasse aceitável. Houve diferenças significativas entre o máximo valor comparando o segundo e terceiro dias, entre a média dos dois maiores valores e entre a média dos três valores comparando o primeiro e segundo dias, bem como o segundo e terceiro dias. Na análise da força máxima, o coeficiente de variação e o coeficiente de correlação intraclasse foram aceitáveis. Somente comparando o segundo e terceiro dias, foi encontrada diferença significativa. Conclusão Observou-se boa reprodutibilidade dos dados obtidos com o uso do Forling portátil.

ABSTRACT Purpose Evaluate the reproducibility of Forling, a portable instrument for measuring axial tongue force. Methods Axial force of the tongue was measured in 49 individuals (30 women and 19 men) aged 18-25 years using the Forling portable instrument. Measurements were performed in three days at intervals of 7±2 days. On each day, three 7-second measurements were performed with one-minute intervals between them. The coefficient of variation, Wilcoxon paired test, and intraclass correlation coefficient were used in the statistical analysis of the data. Maximum and mean tongue force values were analyzed, and comparison between them was performed using three approaches: the mean of the three values; the mean of the two highest values; the highest value of each measurement. Results In the analysis of mean tongue force, the coefficient of variation was considered desirable and the intraclass correlation coefficient was acceptable. Significant differences were observed regarding the maximum value between the second and third days, mean of the two highest values and mean of the three values between the first and second days and the second and third days. In the analysis of maximum tongue force, the coefficient of variation and the intraclass correlation coefficient were acceptable. Significant difference was found only in the comparison between the second and third days. Conclusion Good reproducibility of the data obtained with the use of the Forling portable instrument was observed.

Resumo Introdução: A postura do indivíduo sentado, utilizada rotineiramente na execução de grande variedade de tarefas, constitui-se num potencial aumentado para o desenvolvimento da postura de projeção da cabeça, a qual pode ocasionar sérios comprometimentos à saúde de vários sistemas no corpo humano. Objetivo: Um estudo do equilíbrio estático foi realizado, relacionando a posição da cabeça com a curvatura da coluna lombar em três diferentes posturas do indivíduo sentado. Métodos: Foi realizado o cálculo do valor aproximado de força e momento fletor dos músculos extensores da cabeça na manutenção do equilíbrio estático em cada uma das seguintes posturas: (A) sem uso de encosto para as costas; (B) com uso de encosto de 100° de inclinação; (C) com uso de encosto de 100° associado a um suporte lombar cilíndrico em nível da vértebra L3. Resultados: Os ângulos tragus-C7 foram 43°, 50° e 52°; os ângulos de Frankfort foram 5°, 9° e 9°; as forças musculares extensoras da cabeça foram 53,0N, 59,7N e 43,5N e os momentos fletores foram 2,60N.m, 2,05N.m e 1,78N.m, nas posturas A, B e C, respectivamente. Conclusão: Os resultados revelaram que a postura sentada com encosto inclinado a 100° e calço lombar, onde houve a menor distância horizontal tragus-L3, apresentou menor esforço para a musculatura cervical extensora na manutenção do equilíbrio da cabeça. Este estudo demonstrou a necessidade da preservação do eixo lombar fisiológico, caracterizado pelo posicionamento da vértebra L3, para garantir o bom posicionamento da cabeça.

Abstract Introduction: The sitting position routinely used for a wide variety of tasks increases the potential of developing forward head posture, which can seriously compromise the health of different systems in the human body. Objective: A static equilibrium analysis was conducted, comparing the position of the head with the lumbar curve in three different sitting positions. Methods: The approximate force and flexion moment of the head extensor muscles in static equilibrium was calculated in each of the following positions: (A) without a backrest; (B) using a backrest with a 100° tilt angle; (C) using a 100° tilted backrest associated with a cylindrical lumbar support cushion at the level of the L3 vertebra. Results: The C7-tragus angles were 43°, 50° and 52°; Frankfort horizontal plane (FH) angles were 5°, 9° and 9°; force of the head extensor muscles was 53.0N, 59.7N and 43.5N and flexion moments were 2.60Nm, 2.05Nm and 1.78Nm, in positions A, B and C, respectively. Conclusion: The results revealed that the sitting position using a 100° tilted backrest and lumbar support with the smallest L3-tragus horizontal distance required less effort by the head and neck extensor muscles to retain the head in equilibrium. This study demonstrated the need to preserve the physiology of the lumbar spine, characterized by the position of the L3 vertebra, in order to ensure good head position.

RESUMO Objetivo Verificar se existe diferença nos valores de pressão da língua nos dentes entre participantes que percebem a posição de língua adequada e alterada, tanto em repouso como em deglutição. Métodos Avaliou-se a força da língua sobre o dente de 28 participantes hígidos com idades de 19 a 31 anos. Para tal, um sensor resistivo Flexiforce® foi fixado na face palatina do dente incisivo central superior direito e conectado a um circuito amplificador, a uma placa de aquisição de dados e a um computador. Foram realizadas medições em posição habitual e deglutição de saliva. Além disso, o participante foi questionado sobre qual era sua posição habitual de língua e onde o ápice da língua tocava durante a deglutição. Utilizou-se o teste Mann Whitney ao nível de 5% para análise estatística. Resultados Durante a posição habitual, a força da língua no dente foi de 0,00 N, tanto para os participantes que relataram toque da língua nos dentes como para os sem toque. Na deglutição dirigida, a força foi de 0,34 N para o grupo com língua tocando os dentes nesta tarefa e 0,08 N para o grupo sem toque, sendo a diferença significante. Conclusão Não houve diferença nos valores de força de língua sobre os dentes de participantes que apresentavam posição habitual da língua tocando os dentes e os que não apresentavam. Porém, na deglutição dirigida, participantes que relataram anteriorização de língua apresentaram valores maiores de força da língua nos dentes do que aqueles com deglutição sem toque nos dentes superiores.

ABSTRACT Purpose To verify whether there are differences of tongue force on the teeth at rest and during swallowing between individuals who report appropriate tongue position and those who report tongue thrust. Methods Tongue forces on the teeth were evaluated in 28 participants aged 19 to 31 years. To this end, a Flexiforce® resistive sensor was fixed to the palatal surface of the maxillary right central incisor (tooth 8) and was connected to an amplifier circuit, a data acquisition board, and a computer. Measurements were taken at rest and during saliva swallowing. Participants were asked about their habitual tongue position and where the apex of tongue touched when they swallowed. The Mann Whitney test was used for statistical analysis at 5% significance level. Results At habitual position, tongue force on the teeth was 0.00 N both for participants that reported tongue touch and for those who did not. At directed swallowing, tongue force was 0.34 N for the group of individuals whose tongues touch the teeth and 0.08 N for the group of individuals whose tongues do not touch the teeth. This difference was significant. Conclusion No significant difference was found between the tongue forces of participants of both groups at habitual position. However, participants with tongue thrust during directed swallowing presented greater force than those whose tongues do not touch the teeth during this task.

RESUMO: Objetivo: verificar a existência de associação entre os aspectos da avaliação clínica da língua. Métodos: foi realizado um estudo transversal, com 48 adultos saudáveis, 13 homens e 35 mulheres (idades entre 20 e 44 anos, M=24,8 anos, DP=5,3 anos). Os seguintes aspectos foram avaliados: tensão, movimentos alternados, estalo de língua, sucção de língua no palato e vibração de língua. O avaliador também verificou se o assoalho da boca se elevava durante as tarefas de elevação de língua e sucção de língua no palato e a ocorrência de tremor lingual. Resultados: os aspectos com maior número de indivíduos alterados foram sucção de língua no palato e vibração de língua. Tremor apresentou grande ocorrência durante astarefas de mobilidade. Verificou-se associação estatisticamente significante entre estalo e vibração de língua; e entre vibração e elevação do assoalho da boca durante elevação da língua. Houve associação também entre tensão da língua e as variáveis estalo, vibração de língua e elevação do assoalho da boca durante a elevação da língua. Conclusão: o grau de tensão da língua influencia o desempenho de praxias linguais. As alterações de vibração tendem a vir acompanhadas de outras dificuldades.

ABSTRACT: Purpose: to verify the relationship between the aspects of tongue clinical evaluation. Methods: a cross-sectional study was conducted with (48) healthy adults, (13) men and (35) women (ages (20)-(44) years, M=(24).(8) years, SD=(5).(3) years). The following aspects were checked: tongue force, alternate movements, snap, suction and vibration of the tongue. The evaluator also checked if the floor of the mouth elevated during tasks of tongue elevation or sucking tongue on palate and the occurrence of lingual tremor. Results: the aspects with the most frequent alteration were sucking tongue on palate and tongue vibration. Tremor had a higher occurrence during tongue movements. It was found statistically significant association between snap and vibration and between vibration and elevation of the floor of the mouth during elevation of the tongue. Tongue force was associated with snap, vibration and elevation of the floor of the mouth during tongue elevation. Conclusion: the level of force influences lingual praxis performance. Vibration changes tend to be accompanied by other difficulties.

RESUMO Professores são profissionais com alta prevalência de disfonia, para a qual os principais fatores de risco são as longas jornadas de trabalho em salas de aula com presença de ruído ambiental. O objetivo da pesquisa foi calcular o tempo de fonação e a dose cíclica de professoras com disfonia e de professoras sem alteração de voz durante a atividade letiva. Para o estudo, dois grupos foram analisados: cinco professoras com disfonia funcional constituíram o grupo de professores disfônicos, e cinco professoras sem alteração de voz constituíram o segundo grupo. Para a coleta dos dados foi utilizado o dosímetro marca VoxLog® e os parâmetros analisados foram: intensidade; frequência fundamental; tempo de fonação e dose cíclica. Na análise estatística foram utilizados os testes Anova, T de Student e Kruskal-Wallis. Observou-se que professores disfônicos apresentaram um maior tempo de fonação e de dose cíclica quando comparados com professores sem alteração vocal. A disfonia associa-se com um tempo maior de fonação e uma exposição maior do tecido da prega vocal a fonotraumas.

ABSTRACT Teachers are professionals with high prevalence of dysphonia, whose main risk factors are the large work hours in classrooms with the presence of background noise. The purpose of the study was to calculate the phonation time and the cycle dose of teachers with dysphonia and teachers without voice disorders during the class. There were two groups analyzed: five teachers with functional dysphonia were the first group and five teachers without voice disorders were the second group. For the data was used the VoxLog® dosimeter and the parameters were: intensity; fundamental frequency; phonation time and cycle dose. The statistical analysis used ANOVA, Student's T-test, and Kruskal–Wallis test. Dysphonic teachers showed major values of phonation time and cycle dose compared with teachers without voice disorders. The dysphonia is related to extended period of speech time and greater exposure of the tissue of the vocal fold to phonotrauma.

OBJETIVO: Pesquisar a associação entre os aspectos da avaliação clínica da língua e avaliação quantitativa da força de protrusão da língua. Métodos: Foi realizada uma pesquisa transversal com 48 adultos saudáveis, 13 homens e 35 mulheres (idades entre 20 e 44 anos; média - M=24,8 anos; desvio padrão - DP=5,3 anos). Na avaliação clínica, os seguintes aspectos foram avaliados: força da língua, movimentos alternados, estalo, sucção e vibração da língua. O avaliador também verificou se o assoalho da boca elevava-se durante tarefas de elevação e sucção de língua no palato, bem como a ocorrência de tremor lingual. Para avaliação quantitativa da força da língua, utilizou-se o FORLING, o qual é composto por um conjunto pistão/cilindro acoplado a um bocal e a uma haste de acionamento. A força aplicada pela língua à haste é hidraulicamente transmitida a um sensor de pressão. Utilizou-se o teste de Mann-Whitney para verificar se havia diferenças nas forças médias e máximas, de acordo com as características avaliadas. Adotou-se nível de significância de 5%. RESULTADOS: Os aspectos com maior número de indivíduos alterados foram sucção de língua no palato e vibração de língua. Tremor lingual teve alta ocorrência durante tarefas de mobilidade. Elevação do assoalho da boca durante sucção de língua no palato foi o único aspecto da avaliação clínica associado à avaliação quantitativa de força. CONCLUSÃO: A associação entre elevação do assoalho da boca durante sucção de língua no palato com a avaliação quantitativa de força pode indicar uma maior participação da musculatura supra-hióidea em determinados participantes em ambas as tarefas.

PURPOSE: To verify the association of tongue clinical evaluation aspects with quantitative evaluation of tongue force. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 48 healthy adults, 13 men and 35 women (ages 20-44 years; mean - M=24.8 years; standard deviation - SD=5.3 years). By clinical evaluation, the following aspects were checked: tongue force, alternate movements, snap, suction and vibration of the tongue. The evaluator also checked if the floor of the mouth elevated during tasks of tongue elevation and sucking tongue on palate and the occurrence of lingual tremor. Quantitative evaluation was accomplished using the FORLING instrument. It is composed of a piston/cylinder assembly attached to a mouthguard and to a drive shaft. The force applied by the tongue to the drive shaft is hydraulically transmitted to a pressure sensor. Mann-Whitney's test was used to verify whether there were differences in average and maximum forces according to the characteristics assessed. The test was performed at a 5% level of significance. RESULTS: The aspects with the most frequent alteration were sucking tongue on palate and tongue vibration. Tremor had a higher occurrence during tongue movements. Elevation of the floor of the mouth in sucking tongue on palate was the only aspect associated with quantitative evaluation. CONCLUSION: The association between elevation of the floor of the mouth during sucking tongue on palate and quantitative evaluation can provide insight into the higher participation of the suprahyoid muscles in some participants in both tasks.

PURPOSE: To describe the development and testing of a system that measures forces exerted by the tongue and upper lip on a tooth during rest and during swallowing. METHODS: Twenty-eight subjects, aged 19-31 years (mean: 23.2 years) were submitted to measurement of forces exerted by the upper lip and tongue on the maxillary right central incisor tooth. Flexiforce resistive sensors were fixed on the labial and lingual surfaces of the tooth. They were connected to an amplifier circuit and a data acquisition board for processing and transmitting information to a computer. RESULTS: At rest, the tongue force on the tooth was 0.00±0.00 N and the lip force on tooth was 0.02±0.02 N. The difference between them was significant. During swallowing, the values were 0.31±0.38 N and 0.15±0.14 N, for the tongue and lip, respectively. This difference was not significant. CONCLUSION: At rest, the lip exerts a larger force than the tongue on the maxillary right central incisor tooth. During swallowing, there was no difference between lip and tongue force on the tooth.

Apesar da expressiva evolução da ortopedia veterinária nos últimos anos, as fraturas de ossos longos em grandes animais são constante desafio para o médico-veterinário. O presente estudo é parte da proposta de desenvolvimento de um sistema de haste intramedular polimérica, de baixo custo e fácil aplicação, para uso em bovinos jovens e neonatos. Os objetivos foram avaliar, in vivo, hastes de poliacetal e poliamida para imobilização de fraturas femorais em bovinos jovens. Cinco bezerros machos foram submetidos à anestesia geral e tiveram os fêmures esquerdos fraturados e, em seguida, imobilizados, utilizando-se uma haste cilíndrica de poliacetal ou poliamida inserida no canal intramedular e bloqueada por quatro parafusos corticais de aço inoxidável, inseridos na diáfise em seu sentido lateral-medial e igualmente distribuídos distal e proximal à linha de fratura. Durante um período de 60 dias pós-cirúrgico, os animais foram avaliados por meio de exames clínicos e radiográficos. Houve fratura em quatro das cinco hastes de poliacetal implantadas pela primeira vez e em duas das quatro hastes de poliamida que foram implantadas após a quebra das de poliacetal. Todas as falhas ocorrerem nas primeiras duas semanas de imobilização. Não foram verificados quaisquer sinais de rejeição aos materiais usados. Os resultados demonstram que as hastes de poliacetal e poliamida não apresentaram resistência suficiente para, de acordo com o modelo proposto, promover imobilização precoce de fraturas de fêmur em bovinos jovens.

In spite of the expressive development of veterinary orthopedics in the last years, long bone fractures in large animals remains a challenge for veterinary surgeons. This study is part of a proposal for development of a low-cost and easy-to-use polymeric interlocking nail designed to be used in newborns and young cattle. The objectives were to evaluate, in vivo, polyacetal and polyamide nails for immobilization of femoral fractures in calves. Five calves were submitted to general anesthesia and the left femur was fractured and then fixed using polyacetal or polyamide rods (nails) interlocked with four cortical screws (stainless steel) equally applied to the distal and proximal fracture line. In the postoperative period, calves were clinically assessed during 60 days by clinical and radiographic exams. Fractures occurred in four of the five polyacetal nails implanted in the first time and in two of the four polyamide nails implanted after the polyacetal nail failures. All failures occurred in the first 14 days after implantation. No rejection signs against the polymers were observed. In conclusion, polyacetal and polyamide did not have enough resistance to be used as intramedullary interlocking nails in this system designed to promote early femoral fractures immobilization in young calves.

OBJETIVO: Quantificar e comparar as forças produzidas pela língua de crianças respiradoras orais pré-cirúrgicas, respiradoras orais em tratamento fonoaudiológico e respiradoras nasais, além de comparar os achados da avaliação objetiva com os dados da avaliação clínica. MÉTODOS: Estudo transversal com 15 crianças, de ambos os gêneros, com idades entre oito e 12 anos, sendo cinco respiradoras orais pré-cirúrgicas (Grupo 1), cinco respiradoras orais em tratamento fonoaudiológico (Grupo 2) e cinco respiradoras nasais (Grupo 3). Foi realizada uma avaliação clínica das características linguais das crianças e, em seguida, uma avaliação objetiva da força axial da língua por meio de equipamento desenvolvido na Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. Os resultados foram analisados de forma descritiva por meio das medidas de tendência central e dispersão. RESULTADOS: A média dos valores das forças médias encontrada nos Grupos 1, 2 e 3, respectivamente, foi de 5,6, 6,0 e 7,3N. Já a média dos valores de força máxima foi de 8,2, 9,2 e 10,4N. Obtiveram os maiores valores de força média (7,0N) e máxima (10,3N) os indivíduos que apresentaram tensão adequada de língua na avaliação clínica e os valores mais baixos (3,5N e 2,0N) aqueles cuja avaliação subjetiva indicou hipotensão lingual. A análise estatística indicou dados heterogêneos nos Grupos 1 e 2, tendendo a homogêneos no Grupo 1. CONCLUSÕES: A média das forças foi maior nos indivíduos respiradores nasais, seguidos pelos respiradores orais em tratamento fonoaudiológico e, por fim, os respiradores orais pré-cirúrgicos. Houve concordância entre os resultados das avaliações objetiva e clínica.

PURPOSE: To quantify and to compare the forces produced by the tongues of pre-surgical mouth-breathing children, oral-breathing children enrolled in therapy and nasal-breathing children, and also to compare the findings of objective and clinical evaluations. METHODS: Transversal study with 15 children of both genders with ages between eight and 12 years: five pre-surgical mouth breathers (Group 1), five mouth breathers enrolled in speech therapy (Group 2) and five nasal-breathing children (Group 3). A clinical assessment of each child's tongue characteristics was carried out, followed by the objective evaluation of the axial centre line force of the tongue using the instrument created at Federal University of Minas Gerais. The results were descriptively analyzed using measures of central tendency and dispersion. RESULTS: The average of the force values found in Groups 1, 2 and 3, respectively, were 5.6, 6.0 and 7.3N. The average values of maximum force were 8.2, 9.2 and 10.4N. The individuals with adequate tongue tension in the clinical evaluation were the ones with highest values of average (7.0N) and maximum force (10.3N). The lowest values (3.5N and 2.0N) were obtained by the subjects whose subjective evaluation showed hypotension of the tongue. Statistical analysis indicated heterogeneous data in Groups 1 and 2, tending towards homogeneous in Group 1. CONCLUSION The average of the forces was higher for nasal breathers, followed by mouth breathers undergoing speech therapy and, finally, pre-surgical oral-breathing children. There was agreement between the results of objective and clinical evaluations.
