Sendo a anemia apontada como um importante fator comprometedor da qualidade de vida dos cães portadores de doença renal crônica (DRC), a análise citológica da medula óssea poderia fornecer mais informações acerca do perfil hematológico desses animais e, portanto, possibilitar ao clínico não somente optar por um tratamento mais adequado, mas também monitorar a resposta à terapia. Diante disso, objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar a praticabilidade e a aceitação do procedimento de coleta de medula óssea do osso esterno de cães com doença renal crônica (DRC) utilizando somente anestesia local, bem como verificar se os resultados fornecidos na análise citológica fazem-se úteis à composição do quadro hematológico desses pacientes. Observou-se que a manifestação de hipoplasia da série eritroide só ocorreu nos pacientes em estádio terminal da DRC, e que as medulas ósseas dos DRC em estádio 2 e 3 assemelharam-se quantitativamente à medula de animais idosos. Os cães de todos dos grupos toleraram bem a punção do osso esterno somente com uso de lidocaína, podendo ser esta, portanto, uma ferramenta útil na complementação da abordagem hematopoiética de cães anêmicos com DRC.

Since anemia is indicated as an important compromising factor for the quality of life of dogs with chronic kidney disease (CKD), bone marrow cytological analysis may provide more information on the hematological profile these dogs and, therefore, allow clinicians to not only choose the most adequate treatment but also monitor the response to therapy. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility with sternal bone marrow puncture in chronic kidney disease (CKD) using only local anesthesia and check if the cytological analysis is helpful to determine the hematological status. We found that erythroid hypoplasia occurred only in terminal CKD patients, and that the bone marrows of dogs with CKD stages 2 and 3 were quantitatively similar to those of elderly dogs. All dogs tolerated the bone marrow puncture using only local anesthesia with lidocaine and bone marrow cytological evaluation may be a useful tool for hematopoietic evaluation of anemic dogs with CKD.

A ectopia dos ureteres é raramente observada em gatos. Assim, para aumentar as chances de sucesso do procedimento cirúrgico corretivo e promover a sobrevivência, o diagnóstico deve ser firmado precocemente. O relato em tela ilustra a ocorrência de ureter ectópico bilateral em uma gata Maine Coon, de sete meses, e descrevem-se as manobras médico-cirúrgicas adotadas na correção dessa anormalidade.

Ectopic ureters are rarely observed in cats. Therefore, for a better chance of success in the corrective surgical procedure and survival of the patient, diagnosis should be confirmed early. This report illustrates the occurrence of bilateral ectopic ureters in a seven month old Maine Coon cat and describes the medical and surgical management adopted for correction of the abnormality.

O problema de escalonamento do tipo job shop é considerado NP-difícil. Em aplicações reais, o tempo de processamento de cada tarefa é muitas vezes impreciso. Neste trabalho é abordado o problema de escalonamento do tipo job shop, onde o tempo de processamento das operações é representado por números triangulares fuzzy (NTF). O objetivo do problema é encontrar um escalonamento que minimize o makespan fuzzy. Na abordagem proposta, trabalhamos com o algoritmo memético (MA) e o algoritmo de sistema de colônia de formigas (ACS) para resolver o problema. Uma hibridização destas duas abordagens denominada MA-ACS(CC-MO) é proposta, e para comparar a eficiência da abordagem é realizada uma comparação entre três algoritmos AG-ACS, MA-ACS(MO) e MA-ACS(CC-MO), utilizando 8 problemas do OR-Library.

The job shop scheduling problem is considered NP-hard. In real applications, the processing time of each task is often imprecise. Therefore, this paper deals with the job shop scheduling problem, where the processing time of each task is modeled by triangular fuzzy numbers (NTF). The aim of the problem is to find a schedule that minimizes the fuzzy makespan. In this approach it was worked with the memetic algorithm (MA) and the algorithm of ant colony system (ACS) to solve the problem. A hybridization of these two approaches called MA-ACS(CC-MO) is proposed, and to compare the efficiency of the approach is realized a comparison between three algorithms AG-ACS, ACS-ΜΑ (MO) and MA-ACS (CC-MO), using eight of the OR-Library problems.

The association of education, tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption, and interleukin-2 (IL-2 +114 and -384) and -6 (IL-6 -174) DNA polymorphisms with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) was investigated in a cohort study of 445 subjects. IL-2 and IL-6 genotypes were determined by real-time PCR. Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) of disease-specific survival according to anatomical sites of the head and neck. Mean age was 56 years and most patients were males (87.6%). Subjects with 5 or more years of schooling had better survival in larynx cancer. Smoking had no effect on HNSCC survival, but alcohol consumption had a statistically significant effect on larynx cancer. IL-2 gene +114 G/T (HR = 0.52; 95%CI = 0.15-1.81) and T/T (HR = 0.22; 95%CI = 0.02-3.19) genotypes were associated with better survival in hypopharynx cancer. IL-2 +114 G/T was a predictor of poor survival in oral cavity/oropharynx cancer and larynx cancer (HR = 1.32; 95%CI = 0.61-2.85). IL-2 -384 G/T was associated with better survival in oral cavity/oropharynx cancer (HR = 0.80; 95%CI = 0.45-1.42) and hypopharynx cancer (HR = 0.68; 95%CI = 0.21-2.20), but an inverse relationship was observed for larynx cancer. IL-6 -174 G/C was associated with better survival in hypopharynx cancer (HR = 0.68; 95%CI = 0.26-1.78) and larynx cancer (HR = 0.93; 95%CI = 0.42-2.07), and C/C reduced mortality in larynx cancer. In general, our results are similar to previous reports on the value of education, smoking, alcohol consumption, and IL-2 and IL-6 genetic polymorphisms for the prognosis of HNSCC, but the risks due to these variables are small and estimates imprecise.

Alterações morfológicas de 11 casos de cães com insuficiência renal foram caracterizadas e classificadas de acordo com os padrões estabelecidos pela Organização Mundial de Saúde para seres humanos. Glomerulonefrite esclerosante difusa foi diagnosticada em 82,0% dos animais e nefrite intersticial crônica nos 18,0% restantes. Os tipos e freqüência das lesões identificadas foram similares às encontradas na literatura para a insuficiência renal crônica.

Morphologic alterations of 11 cases of dogs with renal failure were characterized and classified according to the patterns established by the World Health Organization for human beings. Diffuse sclerosing glomerulonephritis was diagnosed in 82.0% of the animals and chronic interstitial nephritis in the remaining 18.0%. The types and frequencies of lesions were similar to the those noticed in the literature for chronic renal failure.

OBJETIVO: Este trabalho tem como objetivo identificar as principais diferenças clínico-epidemiológicas do carcinoma epidermóide de cavidade oral no sexo feminino quando comparado ao sexo masculino. MÉTODOS: Foram estudados retrospectivamente os prontuários de 228 pacientes do sexo feminino portadoras de carcinoma epidermóide de cavidade oral, atendidos no Serviço de Cirurgia de Cabeça e Pescoço do Hospital Heliópolis, no período entre 1977 e 1996. As características clínico-epidemiológicas destas pacientes foram comparadas com aquelas de 849 pacientes do sexo masculino. RESULTADOS: A idade das pacientes das mulheres variou de 2 a 100 anos, com uma média de 60,7 anos. Nos homens encontramos idade entre 17 e 88 anos com uma média de 55,6 (p<0,00001). Quando o etilismo e o tabagismo estavam ausentes, a incidência do carcinoma epidermóide de boca ocorreu em uma faixa etária mais tardia. A presença do tabaco isoladamente não afetou a distribuição por faixa etária, enquanto que o álcool isoladamente ou em associação com o tabaco leva a uma incidência mais precoce do câncer de boca. Os dois principais sítios de incidência são a língua e o soalho. As mulheres têm uma menor incidência de lesões de língua e soalho (43%) quando comparado aos homens (61%). Aproximadamente 50% das mulheres eram estadio III e IV no momento do diagnóstico. Entre os homens este índice atinge 53%. CONCLUSÕES: O carcinoma epidermóide de cavidade oral nas mulheres tem características clínico-epidemiológicas peculiares que justificam o desenvolvimento de protocolos de diagnóstico e tratamento específico para ele.

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the oral cavity occurs mainly in the male population. The objective of the study is to identify the main clinical and epidemiological differences of the oral SCC between men and women. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of the charts of 228 cases of SCC of the oral cavity in women treated at the Head & Neck Surgery Service, Heliopolis Hospital, São Paulo, Brazil from 1977 to 1996. The clinical and epidemiological characteristics of these cases were compared with those of 849 male patients. RESULTS: The mean age of women was 60.7 years (ranging 2 to 100 years) and in the male group was 55.6 years (p<0.00001). In cases where the alcohol intake and tobacco use were absent, the tumors ocurred in older patients. The isolated tobacco use didn't affect the distribuction by age but for the alcohol intake (alone or combined with tobacco) the patients were younger. On the alcohol intake, 71% of the women and 8% of the man used no alcohol. The most common sites of tumors were tongue and floor of the mouth but in the women group the incidence of tumors in these sites were 43% compared with 61% in the men. CONCLUSIONS: The highest incidence of SCC the of oral cavity occurs later in women, than in men. This could be explained by a lesser exposure to alcohol and tobacco in women. Other factors seem to be involved in this issue.

Dois eqüinos da raça Brasileira de Hipismo, machos, quatro anos de idade, apresentando sinais de poliúria-polidipsia, foram submetidos a completa avaliação clínica e a exames de sangue e urina. Não foram observadas alterações clínicas, hematológicas ou bioquímicas, a não ser um decréscimo na gravidade específica da urina de ambos os animais (1,009 e 1,008). Realizou-se um teste de privação de água de 24 horas e durante esse período a gravidade especifica da urina subiu gradualmente até atingir a normalidade (1,028 e 1,026, respectivamente). O comportamento anormal ocorreu por confinamento excessivo. Os resultados clínicos e de laboratório e o teste de privação de água indicam o diagnóstico de polidipsia psicogênica.

Two four-year-old male Brasileiro de Hipismo breed horses presenting signs of polyuria-polydipsia, were submitted to a complete clinical evaluation as well as having blood and urine samples collected for laboratory analysis. No clinical, hematological or biochemical abnormalities were observed, but a significant decrease in urine specific gravity was detected in both horses. One of the horses presented 1,009 and the other 1,008. A 24-hour water deprivation test was carried out and, during this period, the urine specific gravity gradually increased reaching the normal values of 1,028 and 1,026. The abnormal behavior occured as a consequence of an excessive confinement. The clinical and laboratory results associated to the 24-hour water deprivation test indicated a diagnosis of psychogenic polydipsia.
