Resumo Nos séculos XVI e XVII, um intenso debate foi travado sobre a origem dos índios americanos. Os autores, religiosos, juristas e funcionários da Coroa espanhola, buscavam nos textos do Antigo Testamento as passagens que pudessem explicar a existência dessa outra humanidade. Quem eram os ameríndios? Como ali chegaram? Que direitos teriam os espanhóis de incorporar aquelas terras e gentes ao seu império? Este texto analisa a posição peculiar, nesse debate, da obra Miscelánea Antártica, escrita pelo clérigo espanhol Miguel Cabello Valboa, em 1586. Trata-se de um extenso manuscrito cuja importância reside não apenas em ter sido um dos primeiros trabalhos a enfrentar o assunto, como também em oferecer uma interpretação que evitava apresentar uma visão negativa dos nativos. Em sua leitura muito particular da Bíblia, Cabello Valboa definia uma genealogia altamente positiva para os índios, remontando a Ofir e, por extensão, a Sem, filho de Noé. Sua apresentação favorável das culturas andinas completava-se, sem escamotear a violência da conquista, com a ênfase na mestiçagem como caminho conciliatório.

Abstract During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Spanish clergymen, jurists, and officials hadan intense debate about Indian origins. In order to explain the existence of this group, they turned to the Old Testament, using diverse strategies to interpret its passages. Among the questions they posed to themselves were: Who were the Amerindians? How did they get to the Americas? What rights did the Spaniards have to incorporate their lands and people into their empire? This article analyzes Miscelánea Antártica’s peculiar position in this debate. Written by Spanish clergyman Miguel Cabello Valboa in 1586, the extensive manuscript was one of the earliest books devoted entirely to the subject, and its originality consisted in offering a positive view of the Indians. In his very particular reading of the Bible, Cabello Valboa defined a highly positive genealogy for the Indians, going back to Ophir and, by extension, Shem, son of Noah. His favorable view of Andean cultures did not neglect the violence of the conquest, but emphasized mestizaje as a way of conciliation.

Resumo: Por todo o século XVII, colonos e missionários exploraram assiduamente as terras baixas amazônicas, localizadas a leste do vice-reinado do Peru. Nos memoriais que enviaram ao Consejo de Indias, em que solicitavam mercês, apresentaram diversas imagens dos índios, relacionando-os com ricos territórios que imaginavam existir na Amazônia, como o El Dorado e o Paititi. Este artigo propõe uma análise mais aprofundada dessas imagens, entendidas não tanto como a permanência de uma predisposição mítica, mas como uma estratégia discursiva na dura negociação por mercês, honras e privilégios que os referidos atores estabeleciam com a Coroa espanhola. Embora os memoriais permitissem ao Consejo de Indias ter notícia de regiões distantes e de como colonos e missionários atuavam nelas, a própria função política do documento influía poderosamente no tipo de imagens que apresentavam dos indígenas e das paisagens fronteiriças.

Abstract: Throughout the seventeenth century, settlers and missionaries assiduously explored the Amazonian lowlands, located east of the Viceroyalty of Peru. The petitions that they sent to the Council of the Indies requested honors and awards for past or planned actions in the frontier. These documents also described Amazonian Indians and landscapes, relating them to rich imagined territories such as El Dorado and Paititi. In this article, I argue that these images must be understood not as a mythical predisposition, but as a discursive strategy for the negotiation of honors, awards, and privileges between local actors and the Spanish Crown. Although petitions provided information to the Council of the Indies about distant regions and the activities of settlers and missionaries who resided within them, the visions of Amazonian peoples and landscapes that they described were powerfully influenced by the political function of the document.

Resumo Este artigo analisa a participação indígena na difusão da doutrina cristã nas missões jesuíticas instaladas na Amazônia Ocidental. Ao iniciar uma redução, os jesuítas geralmente treinavam alguns caciques para exercerem a tarefa de catequistas; com o tempo, educavam os filhos dos chefes destacados e algumas crianças escolhidas entre os índios comuns e cativos para formar, através deles, um grupo seleto de "fiscais da doutrina", sacristãos e músicos. Também estimulavam a constituição de confrarias, em que apenas os índios de comportamento exemplar e provada devoção religiosa podiam participar. O presente estudo estabelece uma análise de situações e casos relevantes sucedidos nas missões de Maynas, Mojos e Chiquitos. O argumento central consiste em demonstrar que, ao depender de agentes indígenas para viabilizar a tradução da doutrina cristã aos neófitos, os jesuítas não podiam desterrar completamente certas práticas e representações que asseguravam a legitimidade dos seus mediadores.

Abstract This article analyzes indigenous participation in the expansion of the Christian doctrine in western Amazonian Jesuit missions. When starting a reduction, Jesuits usually trained some chiefs to serve as catechists. Over time, Jesuits educated the sons of indigenous leaders and chose some of the children of common and captive Indians to form a select group of "prosecutors of the doctrine" (fiscales de doctrina), sextons, and musicians. Priests also encouraged the establishment of confraternities in which only virtuous and devout Indians could participate. This article focuses on the Spanish Jesuit missions of Maynas, Mojos and Chiquitos. I argue that by relying on indigenous agents to facilitate the translation of Christian doctrine to neophytes, Jesuits could not completely banish certain practices and representations that ensured the legitimacy of their mediators.

RESUMOEste artigo analisa as representações do demônio nos textos dos missionários que atuaram na Amazônia espanhola, entre os séculos XVII e XVIII. Os missionários europeus, e em especial os jesuítas, inseriam o processo de “conquista espiritual” das terras amazônicas em uma narrativa de luta entre as forças do bem e do mal. Apresentavam-se como aqueles que vieram libertar os índios que viviam acorrentados à adoração do demônio, que se servia dos xamãs para promover toda a sorte de conflitos e danos, e inspirava celebrações e sacramentos que imitavam os da religião cristã, mas que ao fim e ao cabo apenas reforçavam a submissão dos nativos aos desígnios do comum inimigo. Este texto analisa em detalhe os diversos elementos constitutivos dessa narrativa. Ao contrário do que afirmam alguns estudos, a demonização não era tão somente uma forma de desqualificação das culturas indígenas. Os jesuítas enquadravam como demoníacas aquelas práticas que tentavam conhecer e cujo sentido mais imediato lhes escapava. A imagem do demônio servia, portanto, para traduzir uma cultura em outra, tornar a cultura nativa inteligível. A demonização não significava o rechaço absoluto ao Outro, antes era uma tentativa de estabelecer pontes analógicas por meio das quais o diálogo intercultural e a negociação do universo do sagrado podiam fluir.

ABSTRACTThis paper analyzes the representations of the devil in the texts of the missionaries who worked in the Spanish Amazon, between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. European missionaries, especially the Jesuits, understood the process of “spiritual conquest” of the Amazonian region as a narrative of struggle between the forces of good and evil. They presented themselves as those who came to free the Indians who were under the devil’s domination. Fathers conceived that Satan was using shamans to promote all kinds of conflicts and damage, and to inspire celebrations and sacraments that mimicked those of the Christian religion, but at the end only reinforced the submission of the natives to the common enemy’s designs. Contrary to what some studies suggest, the demonization was not just a form of disqualification of indigenous cultures. Jesuits called “diabolical” customs and rituals that they tried to know and whose meaning escaped them. The image of the demon was used, therefore, to translate one culture into another, to make intelligible a native culture. Demonization was not the absolute rejection of the Other. Demonization was an attempt to build bridges and analogies through which intercultural dialogue and the negotiation of the sacred could flow.

O artigo analisa alguns dos dispositivos institucionais que a Coroa portuguesa utilizava para manter a lealdade dos vassalos que viviam nas fronteiras do império, mais precisamente na capitania de Mato Grosso, na segunda metade do século XVIII. Releva a importância dos requerimentos de premiação por serviços prestados à Coroa, que na mencionada região diziam respeito, dentre outros, à defesa dos limites com os domínios espanhóis, à exploração de roteiros fluviais, à aplicação da política indigenista de atração de índios que viviam entre os dois impérios e à consolidação de povoações em pontos estratégicos. A hipótese sustentada é a de que, se os serviços e pedidos de mercês serviam para pressionar a administração central, era sob a condição da introjeção dos objetivos mais amplos da colonização pelos setores locais. Com isso, a Coroa não apenas transferia aos colonos parte dos custos da defesa militar das fronteiras, como também controlava de perto as iniciativas individuais de colonos que pretendiam explorar sertões, contatar índios e alcançar prestígio social.

The article analyzes some of the institutional arrangements that the Portuguese royal family used to keep the loyalty of vassals who lived on the borders of the empire, specifically in the captaincy of Mato Grosso, in the second half of the eighteenth century. It emphasizes the importance of mercês (awards) for services to the Crown, which in that region concerned the defense of borders with Spanish dominions; explotation of river routes; implementation of an Indian policy by attracting Indians who lived between the two empires; and the consolidation of provinces at strategic points The hypothesis is that if the services and requests for Mercês served to press the central government, it was under the condition of introjection of wider objectives of the colonization by local sectors. Therefore, the royal family not only transferred to the settlers part of the costs with military defense of borders, but also controlled closely the individual initiatives of settlers who wished to explore the wildernesses, contact Indians and achieve social prestige.
