The covariance of the d’Alembert equation for acoustic phenomena, described by mechanical waves in one or three spatial dimensions, under Galilean transformations, is demonstrated without the need to abandon the hypothesis that time is absolute in Classical Mechanics. This is true only if and only if the phase velocity of sound depends on the velocity of the observer. Numerov’s numerical method is developed in a didactic way by using Python in its Jupyter Notebook version 6.0.3 for three different quantum physical systems: the hydrogen atom, a molecule governed by the Morse potential and a quantum dot. After a brief introduction to the Numerov method, the complete code to calculate the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the hydrogen atom is presented. The necessary code changes to compute the other two examples are also provided in the sequel.

Neste artigo, apresenta-se a evolução das ideias sobre a quarta dimensão espacial, partindo daquelas que surgem da geometria euclidiana clássica e abordando, em seguida, as que resultam do âmbito das geometrias não euclidianas, como as de Riemann e Minkowski. Particular atenção é dada ao momento no qual o tempo real passa efetivamente a ser considerado como uma quarta dimensão, conforme introduzido por Einstein.

In this article, the evolution of the ideas about the fourth spatial dimension is presented, starting from those which come out within classical Euclidean geometry and going through those arose in the framework of non-Euclidean geometries, like those of Riemann and Minkowski. Particular attention is given to the moment when real time is effectively considered as a fourth dimension, as introduced by Einstein.

Mostra-se que, apesar de os argumentos de Einstein e Compton terem sido fundamentais para a aceitação do caráter corpuscular da radiação eletromagnética, existem outras abordagens para explicações dos efeitos fotoelétrico e Compton, sem utilizar o conceito de fóton. Nesse contexto, a radiação é tratada como uma onda eletromagnética clássica que interage com o elétron.

It is shown that, although Einstein and Compton’s arguments were fundamental for the acceptance of the corpuscular character of electromagnetic radiation, there are other approaches able to explain the photoelectric and Compton effects, without using the photon concept. In this context, radiation is treated as a classic electromagnetic wave that interacts with the electron.

Resumo Procura-se abordar, neste artigo, três aspectos da luz que se complementam de alguma forma: seu papel no imaginário coletivo, os esforços feitos para descrevê-la teoricamente e algumas de suas aplicações mais notáveis, tanto no desenvolvimento da Física Básica quanto Aplicada.

Abstract This article seeks to address three aspects of light that complement each other in some way: its role in the collective imagination, the efforts made to describe it theoretically and some of its most notable applications, both in the development of Basic and Applied Physics.

A partir de argumentos baseados no princípio da incerteza de Heisenberg e no princípio de exclusão de Pauli, estimam-se os calores específicos molares dos gases ideais degenerados em baixas temperaturas, com resultados compatíveis com o princípio de Nerst-Planck (a 3ª lei da Termodinâmica). É apresentado, ainda, o fenômeno da condensação de Bose-Einstein com base no comportamento do calor específico de gases de bósons massivos e não relativísticos.

From arguments based on Heisenberg's uncertainty principle and Pauli's exclusion principle, the molar specific heats of degenerate ideal gases at low temperatures are estimated, giving rise to values consistent with the Nerst-Planck Principle (third law of Thermodynamics). The Bose-Einstein condensation phenomenon based on the behavior of specific heat of massive and non-relativistic boson gases is also presented.

Enrico Fermi foi um dos maiores físicos do século passado. Em 1934, fez uma série de palestras no Brasil. Convidado por Theodoro Ramos para trabalhar em São Paulo, preferiu trabalhar nos Estados Unidos a partir de 1938. No entanto, indicou Gleb Wataghin - a quem Cesar Lattes se referia como "pai" da Física brasileira - para vir em seu lugar. Wataghin fez história no Brasil, tornando-se um dos primeiros catedráticos da futura Universidade de São Paulo. Assim, Fermi, além de ser um nome importante para a História das Ciências, ao indicar Wataghin, acabou deixando indelével marca na criação e institucionalização da pesquisa científica nacional. Apesar disso, sabe-se muito pouco sobre a viagem de Fermi ao Brasil. Esse trabalho reconstitui da forma mais ampla possível os passos do famoso físico italiano em nossas terras.

Enrico Fermi was one of the greater physicists of the XX century. In 1934, he gave several lectures in Brazil. Invited by Theodoro Ramos to work in São Paulo, he preferred to stay in Rome and went to the USA in 1938. However, Fermi recommended Gleb Wataghin to come in his place. Wataghin made history in Brazil, becoming one of the first Professors of the future São Paulo University. Besides his relevance to the History of Science, Fermi eventually leaved an indelible mark on the creation and institutionalization of national scientific research due to the indication of Wataghin. Despite this fact, very little is known about Fermi's trip to Brazil. This work tries to reconstruct the fullest possible steps of the famous Italian physicist in our lands.

Neste artigo mostra-se como resolver numericamente problemas de autovalor associados a equações diferenciais ordinárias lineares de segunda ordem, contendo também termos que dependem da derivada primeira da variável incógnita. Nesse sentido, faz-se uma apresentação didática do método de Numerov e, em seguida, ele é aplicado a dois problemas clássicos da mecânica quântica não relativística cujas soluções analíticas são bem conhecidas: o oscilador harmônico simples e o átomo de hidrogênio. Os resultados numéricos são confrontados com os obtidos analiticamente.

In this paper it is shown how to solve numerically eigenvalue problems associated to second order linear ordinary differential equations, containing also terms which depend on the first derivative of the unknown variable. A didactic presentation of the Numerov Method is given and, in the sequel, it is applied to two quantum non-relativistic problems with well known analytical solutions: the simple harmonic oscillator and the hydrogen atom. The numerical results are compared to those obtained analytically.

Apresenta um método novo de trabalhar conceitos de ciências, saúde, história, sociologia, linguagem, entre outros, com jovens de escolas públicas de ensino médio do Rio de Janeiro, por meio de histórias em quadrinhos. O método baseia-se em pedagogia de inspiração bachelardiana, segundo a qual conhecimento científico e produção artística são integrados a partir do estímulo da criatividade. Mostra-se como ele é capaz de contribuir para o resgate da auto-estima do aluno e aumento de sua motivação nos estudos, e como, por intermédio do processo criativo e da valorização do espírito crítico, os jovens constroem sua cidadania, a partir de releituras e traduções de um novo mundo construído de ciências, de sonhos e de imagens, que se concretizam em tirinhas, algumas das quais ilustram o texto.

A new method for working with scientific, healthcare, historic, sociological, linguistic and other concepts through comic books is presented for youth from public high schools in Rio de Janeiro. The method is based on the pedagogy inspired by Bachelard, according to which scientific knowledge and artistic production are integrated by the stimulus to creativity. It shows how it is capable of contributing to the recuperation of students' self-esteem and increasing motivation to study and how, through a creative process and emphasis on a critical spirit, youths construct their citizenship, based on re-readings and translations of a new world built of sciences, dreams and images, which are made concrete in comics, some of which illustrate the text.

The fascinating search of the inner boundaries of the Universe, has been entangled, since the birth of greek philosophy 25 centuries ago, with the main epistemological changes in the History of Science. This paper does not intend to present a systematic description of the discovery of the elementary particles. By stressing the main achievements of the knowledge of matter's structure and their dependence on symmetry arguments, it is argued that even considering profound differences in each historical period, there is a paradgima of atom shared by Chemistry and Particle Physics. This text could help High School Teachers of Chemistry and Physics, as well as motivate them, in the challenge of explaining to their pupils how the idea of atom evolved.
