Resumo O artigo busca como objetivo principal aprofundar uma possibilidade de leitura simbólica, por meio da análise de personagens e cenas, do thriller de horror O animal cordial (2017), dirigido por Gabriela Amaral Almeida. Abstract This paper aims to deepen a culturalist possibility of symbolic reading, through the analysis of characters and scenes, from the horror thriller Friendly beast (2017), by Gabriela Amaral Almeida. This symbolic reading works as a metaphor for contemporary Brazil: a country split by social tensions of different matrices ? race, gender, color, social class, regional rivalries ? that have been gradually breaking apart in a plot of fear and hate. Resumo O objetivo central deste artigo consiste em analisar os usos expressivos do som do vento na produção anglo-jordaniana-qatariana À sombra do medo (2016). Na maioria dos filmes, o vento possui presença discreta, apenas para dar impressão de verossimilhança e reforçar o senso de imersão do espectador na diegese. O filme estudado constitui uma exceção, na qual o sopro do vento incorpora um personagem sobrenatural e conduz o espectador, através do desenho de som, a uma experiência de tensão, desconforto e medo, além de simbolizar a repressão política no país. A análise fílmica será precedida por uma breve revisão histórica do papel do som do vento nos filmes.

Abstract The main goal of this essay is to analyze the expressive uses of the sound of the wind in the Anglo-Jordanian-Qatar production Under the shadow (2016). In most films, the wind has a discreet presence, just to give the impression of verisimilitude and to reinforce the viewer’s sense of immersion in the diegesis. The studied film is an exception, in which the wind incorporates a supernatural character and leads the viewer, through sound design, to an experience of tension, discomfort and fear, also representing the political repression in the country. The film analysis will be preceded by a brief historical review of the role of the sound of the wind in feature films.

Resumo Filme influente na consolidação de uma estética semidocumental muito popular no cinema de horror contemporâneo, O massacre da serra elétrica (The Texas chain saw massacre, Tobe Hooper, 1974) ganhou status de inovador, com o passar dos anos, por ter antecipado a explosão do subgênero slasher, e por causa da crueza das imagens. No entanto, pouco se fala do caráter arrojado dos sons que contribuem para assustar o público do filme. Este ensaio tem o objetivo de reconstituir o processo criativo da trilha sonora, destacando a presença majoritária de estudantes e aprendizes na equipe responsável pelo sound design, e enfatizando o modo pelo qual o relativo desconhecimento das práticas profissionais de pós-produção embaralhou as fronteiras entre música e efeitos sonoros, reforçando uma tendência estilística inovadora que influencia o cinema contemporâneo.

Abstract An influential film in the consolidation of a very popular realistic semidocumentary aesthetics in contemporary horror films, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (Tobe Hooper, 1974) has gained, over the years, innovative status for anticipating the boom of the slasher subgenre, and exploiting the rawness of its images. However, little is said of the bold nature of the sounds that contribute to frighten the audience. This essay aims to reconstruct the creative process of the soundtrack, highlighting the major presence of students and young aspiring professionals in the team responsible for the sound design, and emphasizing how the relative ignorance of professional post-production practices helped to scramble the boundaries between music and sound effects, thus reinforcing an innovative stylistic trend that influences contemporary cinema.

Mais conhecido cineasta brasileiro de horror, José Mojica Marins tem uma obra vasta, na qual transitou por outros gêneros fílmicos, como o western e o sexo explícito. Ele trabalhou dentro de modos de produção distintos, usou diversas tecnologias e lidou com mudanças profundas no círculo de colaboradores. Tudo isso teve como consequência certa heterogeneidade temática, visual e sonora nos filmes que ele dirigiu, tornando mais difícil a tarefa de rastrear uma assinatura estilística em sua obra. Apesar disso, é possível afirmar que seus filmes têm um estilo próprio. Este ensaio procura identificar padrões recorrentes de forma e conteúdo na obra de Mojica, tentando explicá-los através do exame dos contextos socioculturais, tecnológicos, econômicos e políticos que afetaram o trabalho e a vida pessoal do cineasta.

Brazil's most well-known horror filmmaker, Jose Mojica Marins has a vast collection of works that include genres such as Westerns and sexually explicit films. He has employed different modes of production, used various technologies, and dealt with profound changes in his circle of collaborators. All this has led to a certain degree of thematic, visual and sound heterogeneity in the films he has directed, making it harder to trace a stylistic signature in his work. Nevertheless, his films clearly have a style of their own. This essay seeks to identify recurring patterns of form and content in Mojica's work, trying to explain them by examining the socio-cultural, technological, economic and political contexts that affect the filmmaker's professional and private life.
