ABSTRACT Quarterly collections of demersal fish were conducted between 2014 and 2018 on the adjacent continental shelf and in the Paranaguá Estuarine Complex (PEC). Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses were used to determine the abundance, richness, and composition of demersal fish assemblages and to list predictor variables responsible for the variability in these ecological descriptors by applying generalized linear models. The collected specimens of demersal fish (n = 25,179) were distributed across 19 orders, 31 families, and 72 species. Fish richness was explained by the following predictor variables: the percentage of fine sand in the sediment, the richness of the benthic megafauna, and sampling sites. The abundance was associated with the predictor variables of the percentage of very fine sand in the sediment, percentage of silt in the sediment, salinity, and sampling sites. Canonical correspondence analysis showed that the fish assemblage composition was strongly associated with the salinity gradient and positively correlated with benthic megafaunal species richness. As it is one of the last remnants of the Atlantic Forest, declared by UNESCO as a Natural Heritage of Humanity, the patterns observed in this study will support PEC's coastal management of current developmental demands, particularly related to port activities.

Resumo A construção de barragens provoca alterações nas variáveis dos rios, em decorrência de mudanças diretas em seus ciclos hidrológicos e biogeoquímicos. Uma das mudanças mais notáveis é a regulação do fluxo, que reduz os eventos sazonais e a pressão hidrostática exercida pela água doce, aumentando a intrusão das cunhas da água salgada no sistema. Mudar o regime de salinidade causa modificações nos ecossistemas a jusante, bem como na distribuição e composição da ictiofauna. No Brasil, destaca-se o Rio São Francisco, que possui um sistema de barragens em cascata, construído entre as décadas de 70 e 90. Por causa dessas alterações causadas no curso natural do rio, o presente estudo teve por objetivo analisar os padrões de composição e ocorrência da ictiofauna da foz do rio São Francisco e relacioná-los com as variáveis físicas e químicas da região. Para avaliar os padrões de composição e ocorrência da ictiofauna foram realizados arrastos mensais ao longo da margem e analisadas as variáveis físicas e químicas no canal do rio ao longo de um ano. A relação entre abundância e riqueza de espécies de peixes com as variáveis ambientais foi verificada por meio de Modelos Lineares Generalizados. Foram capturados 101.958 peixes pertencentes a 87 táxons, com destaque para peixes marinhos, tanto em número de indivíduos (99,92%) quanto em biomassa (99,31%). Um gradiente espacial foi detectado, em que os pontos 1 e 2 estavam sob influência marinha, os pontos 3 e 4 representavam a transição entre os ambientes e o ponto 5 estava sob a influência de água doce e salobra. Abstract The construction of dams causes changes in river variables, as a result of direct changes in their hydrological and biogeochemical cycles. One of the most notable changes is the flow regulation, which reduces seasonal events and the hydrostatic pressure exerted by freshwater, increasing the saltwater wedge intrusion into the system. Changing the salinity regime causes modifications in downstream ecosystems as well as in the distribution and composition of the fish fauna. In Brazil, the São Francisco River stands out, which has a system of cascading dams, built between the 70’s and 90’s. Because of these changes caused in the natural course of the river, this study aimed to analyze the patterns of composition and occurrence of the ichthyofauna at the mouth of the São Francisco River and relate them to the physical and chemical variables of the region. In order to evaluate the patterns of composition and occurrence of the fish fauna at the mouth of the São Francisco River, monthly trawls were conducted along the bank and physical and chemical variables were analyzed in the river channel over a period of one year. The relationship between abundance and species richness with environmental variables was verified using Generalized Linear Models. Resumo: A estrutura populacional do cavalo-marinho Hippocampus reidi (Ginsburg 1933) foi avaliada em um sistema estuarino no nordeste do Brasil. Um total de 425 capturas foram realizadas no estuário de Vaza-Barris e 232 indivíduos foram marcados com Elastômeros Fluorescentes de Implante Visível. A população foi estimada em 428 peixes. A curva de crescimento de von Bertalanffy mostra um crescimento mais acentuado durante os primeiros meses de vida, até cerca de 17 meses, e estabilização após os 16 cm e 27 meses de idade. O presente estudo indica que o estuário Vaza-Barris é o lar de populações residentes de cavalos-marinhos de focinho comprido. Além disso, essas populações utilizam raízes de mangue como principal substrato de fixação e apresentam características ecológicas bem definidas, como fidelidade de habitat e organização social altamente estruturada.

Abstract: The population structure of the longsnout seahorse Hippocampus reidi (Ginsburg 1933) was evaluated in an estuarine system in northeastern Brazil. A total of 425 captures were performed in the Vaza-Barris estuary and 232 individuals were marked with Visible Implant Fluorescent Elastomers. The population was estimated to be composed of 428 fish. The von Bertalanffy growth curve shows a steeper growth during the first months of life, up to about 17 months, and stabilization after 16 cm and 27 months of age. The hereby study indicates that the Vaza-Barris estuary is home to resident populations of longsnout seahorses. Moreover, these populations use mangrove roots as the main substrate for attachment and present well-defined ecological characteristics, such as habitat fidelity and highly structured social organization.

RESUMO A eco-hidrologia busca integrar os conhecimentos da hidrologia aos da ecologia, criando uma abordagem mais ampla para a compreensão da dinâmica dos recursos hídricos, facilitando o planejamento e as ações de programas de gestão. Uma das formas de integrar hidrologia à ecologia é por meio da elaboração de índices de adequabilidade de hábitat (IAHs), processo que tem se destacado por fornecer informações relevantes sobre áreas úmidas. O IAH é obtido pela relação entre as informações sobre espécies bioindicadoras e as condições eco-hidrológicas necessárias à sua sobrevivência, permitindo a avaliação de impactos sobre as espécies. O desenvolvimento de IAHs, integrados a processos de modelagem hidrodinâmica e sistemas de informação geográfica (SIGs), proporciona a obtenção de imagens de adequabilidade de hábitat, que permitem obter informações espacializadas sobre a qualidade do hábitat de determinada espécie, ou grupo de espécies, colaborando para o aperfeiçoamento das estratégias de gerenciamento dos recursos hídricos e a conservação da biodiversidade de áreas úmidas. A fim de melhor elucidar o processo de desenvolvimento de IAHs e sua aplicação, é apresentada a metodologia utilizada para avaliar a adequabilidade do Banhado do Taim, inserido na Estação Ecológica do Taim, importante área úmida localizada no sul da planície costeira do Rio Grande do Sul.

ABSTRACT The ecohydrology aims at integrating the concepts of hydrology and ecology, creating a broader approach to understand the water resources’ dynamics, facilitating the plan and management of resources. One way to integrate hydrology with ecology is by developing Habitat Suitability Index (HSI), a process that stands out by providing relevant information on wetlands. HSI is obtained by relating the information about the bioindicators and ecohydrological conditions necessary to ensure these species’ survival, enabling to evaluate the impacts on them. The development of HSIs integrated with hydrodynamic modeling and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) allows us to obtain spatialized habitat suitability information, that provide information about the quality of a species’ (or group of species’) habitat, contributing to the improvement of water resources management strategies combined with the biodiversity conservation in wetlands. Regarding this, the present article presents the HSI’s development process and its application to evaluate the suitability of the Taim Basin, inserted in Taim Ecological Station, an important Southern Coastal wetland located in the State of Rio Grande do Sul.

Resumo: Este estudo teve como objetivo apresentar uma lista de peixes marinhos de ambientes costeiros da Ilha de Santa Catarina, incluindo comentários sobre as afinidades zoogeográficas, estado de conservação de cada espécie e grupos funcionais. Um total de 169 espécies de peixes, pertencentes a 30 ordens e 58 famílias, foram registradas. As famílias mais especiosas foram Sciaenidae, Carangidae e Engraulidae, representando 26,62% das espécies registradas. Anchoa foi o gênero mais rico, seguido por Sphoeroides e Cynoscion. A maioria das espécies tem sua distribuição limitada ao Atlântico ocidental, e dois grupos de peixes foram distinguidos de acordo com as distribuições de espécies: 1) espécies ocorrentes no Caribe e na Província Brasileira; e 2) espécies Transatlânticas. Treze espécies estão criticamente ameaçadas, 10 são superexploradas na costa brasileira e 2 estão ameaçadas de extinção. A maioria das espécies é composta por visitantes marinhos ou migrantes marinhos, sendo a maioria deles zoobentívoros, piscívoros ou ambos.

Abstract: This study aimed to present a checklist of marine fishes from coastal environments of the Island of Santa Catarina, including comments on the zoogeographic affinities, conservation status of each species, and functional groups. A total of 169 fish species belonging to 30 orders and 58 families were recorded. The most speciose families were Sciaenidae, Carangidae and, Engraulidae, representing 26,62% of the recorded species. Anchoa was the richest genus, followed by Sphoeroides and Cynoscion. Most of the species have their distribution limited to the western Atlantic, and two groups of fish were distinguished according to the species distributions: 1) species occurring in the Caribbean and in the Brazilian Province; and 2) Transatlantic species. Thirteen species are critically threatened, 10 are overexploited on the Brazilian coast, and 2 are threatened by extinction. Most of the species are either marine stragglers or marine migrants, and most of them are zoobenthivores, piscivores, or both.
