RESUMO Ariídeos, como Genidens genidens, são particularmente suscetíveis à sobrepesca devido a seus complexos mecanismos reprodutivos, que resultam em uma reposição lenta dos estoques. Neste estudo, obtivemos dados sobre a ecologia reprodutiva do bagre G. genidens no estuário da Baía de Guanabara, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, fornecendo subsídios para seu manejo pesqueiro. A proporção sexual, o tamanho médio de primeira maturação sexual de cada sexo e a fecundidade das fêmeas foram determinados e o período reprodutivo caracterizado. A proporção machos:fêmeas foi de ١:2. A fecundidade é baixa e aumenta proporcionalmente ao crescimento das fêmeas em comprimento total e no peso. O período reprodutivo ocorre durante os meses mais quentes do ano, com a desova se estendendo de outubro a março e a incubação de dezembro a abril. A maturação sexual é tardia, com machos amadurecendo em tamanho maior que as fêmeas. Também foi identificado nas fêmeas adiamento da desova. Com base na biologia reprodutiva, sugere-se que a captura seja restrita a indivíduos maiores que 20 cm, considerando a C75 dos machos, e que a pesca seja proibida de dezembro a março, para incluir o período principal de época de desova das fêmeas e incubação orofaríngea dos machos.

ABSTRACT Ariids such as Genidens genidens are particularly susceptible to overfishing because of their complex reproductive mechanisms, which result in slow replenishment of stocks. In this study, we obtained data about the reproductive ecology of the catfish G. genidens in the Guanabara Bay estuary, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, providing supporting information for management of its fishery. The sex ratio, mean size of each sex at first sexual maturation, and female fecundity were determined and the reproductive period was characterized. The males:females ratio was 1:2. The fecundity is low and increases proportionally to the females’ growth in total length and weight. The breeding season occurs during the warmest months of the year, with spawning extending from October through March and incubation from December through April. Sexual maturation is late, with males maturing at a larger size than females. Skipping spawning was also identified in females. Based on the reproductive biology, it is suggested that the catch be restricted to individuals larger than 20 cm, considering the L75 of the males, and that fishing be prohibited from December through March, to include the main period of spawning season by females and oropharyngeal incubation by males.

Distribuição espacial, locais favoráveis è desova e dimorfismo sexual foram estudados no cascudo Neoplecostomus microps no rio Macaé de março 2004 a março 2005. Espécimes de N. microps estiveram restritos a trechos de águas rápidas, e sua distribuição foi relacionada ao desenvolvimento ontogenético. Larvas em pós-flexão ocorreram somente na vegetação marginal e adultos somente em frestas entre rochas e pedras no canal do rio. Juvenis ocorreram em ambos ambientes. Desovas foram encontradas no ambiente natural em trechos de corredeira, com os ovos aderidos a superfície ventral de rochas em aberturas formadas com o leito do rio. O número de ovos/pedra variou de 62 a 375, com diferenças significativas entre os valores médios dos ovos. Dimorfismo sexual foi verificado em N. microps. As papilas anal e urogenital são separadas em machos e colabadas em fêmeas, e há uma projeção epidérmica na nadadeira peitoral de machos.

Spatial distribution, suitable spawning sites, and sexual dimorphism were investigated in armored catfish Neoplecostomus microps in the Macaé River from March 2004 to March 2005. Individuals of N. microps (n=290) were limited to fast-flowing stretches, and the distribution was related to ontogenetic development. Larvae in post-flexion occurred in the marginal vegetation, and adults only in gaps between boulders and stones in the river channel. Juveniles occurred in both environments. Spawns were found in the natural habitat in rapid stretches, with the eggs attached to the lower surface of stones in openings formed in the riverbed. The number of eggs per stone ranged from 62 to 375, with significant differences among the mean sizes of the eggs. Sexual dimorphism was noticed to N. microps. The anal and urogenital papillae are separated in males and merged in females and there is an epidermal growth along the pectoral-fin spine of males.

Foram estudados as hábitos alimentares dos peixes engraulídeos Anchoa januaria e Cetengraulis edentulus na Baía de Sepetiba, Rio de Janeiro, de julho de 1983 a julho de 1985. Os itens alimentares e as estruturas morfológicas relacionadas à alimentação indicaram que a área superficial dos rastros branquiais de A. januaria e C. edentulus é mais eficiente para a filtração dos alimentos, do que as distâncias entre os mesmos. Estas estruturas morfológicas possibilitam uma seletividade no tamanho dos itens alimentares, resultando em formas distintata de obtenção do alimento, entre as duas espécies. A. januaria seleciona o zooplâncton, por captura dos itens alimentares, enquanto C. edentuluss é um fitoplanctófago filtrador. Anchoa januaria tem hábitos alimentares diurnos e explgra diferentes estratos da coluna d'água durante os períodos frio e quente.

Feeding habits of the engraulidid flsh - Anchoa januaria and Cetengraulis edentullus were studied in the Baía de Sepetiba, Rio de Janeiro, from July 1983 to July 1985. Dietary items and morphological structures "blted to feeding indicate that the surface structures of branchial rays of A. januaria and C. edentulus are more useful for food filtration than the distance between them. Those morphological structures provide a separation of the size of dietary items, thw resoltins in different forms of feeding behaviors between two species. A. januaria is a selective zooplanktivore, picking up food items, whereas C. edentulus is a filtering phytaplanktivore. Anchoa januaria is a diurnal feeder and exploits different layers in the water column during the warm and cold seasons.
