We present the results of the frst survey on the Ceratopogonidae from the “Reserva Natural Integral Punta Lara”, in Buenos Aires province. This protected area represents the southernmost relict of gallery forest where the knowledge of the insect fauna is still limited. Catches were conducted in areas of grassland and marginal forest with Malaise traps, CDC light traps and funnel light traps. A total of 4,195 specimens belonging to nine genera and 39 species of Ceratopogonidae were identifed. A list of the species present in the protected area is provided, along with their distributional data. Twenty-three species are recorded from the reserve for the frst time, while Dasyhelea mediomunda Minaya, Forcipomyia ( Forcipomyia) taragui Marino, Spinelli & Cazorla, Forcipomyia ( Microhelea) fuliginosa (Meigen), Stilobezzia (Eukraiohelea) elegantula (Johannsen) and Stilobezzia (Stilobezzia) punctulata Lane are recorded for the frst time in Buenos Aires province.

Se presenta el primer relevamiento de Ceratopogonidae de la Reserva Natural Integral Punta Lara, en la provincia de Buenos Aires. Este área protegida representa uno de los relictos más australes de la selva en galería, donde el conocimiento de la fauna de insectos es aún limitado. Las capturas se realizaron en ambientes de pastizal y selva en galería, con trampas Malaise y trampas de luz, tipo CDC y embudo. Un total de 4.195 especímenes pertenecientes a nueve géneros y 39 especies de Ceratopogonidae fueron identifcados. Se brinda un listado de las especies presentes en el área, y se proveen datos de su distribución geográfca. V eintitrés especies se citan en la Reserva por primera vez, mientras que Dasyhelea mediomunda Minaya, Forcipomyia (Forcipomyia) taragui Marino, Spinelli & Cazorla, Forcipomyia (M icrohelea) fuliginosa (Meigen), Stilobezzia (Eukraiohelea) elegantula (Johannsen) y Stilobezzia (Stilobezzia) punctulata Lane se registran por primera vez en la provincia de Buenos Aires.

This paper reports the discovery of the mosquitoes Toxorhynchites haemorrhoidalis (Lynch Arribálzaga) and Ochlerotatus milleri Dyar in Corrientes and Buenos Aires provinces respectively, thereby extending the geographical distribution of both species in Argentina.

En esta nota, se informa el hallazgo de los mosquitos Toxorhynchites haemorrhoidalis (Lynch Arribálzaga) y de Ochlerotatus milleri Dyar en la provincia de Corrientes y Buenos Aires respectivamente; con lo cual se amplía la distribución geográfica de ambas especies en Argentina.

A list of the most common phytotelmata and their Culicidae and Ceratopogonidae inhabitants from Iguazú National Park, Misiones Province, Argentina, is presented, and biological and behavioral observations are also included. Species of Poaceae, Bromeliaceae, Apiaceae, Araceae, Urticaceae, Marantaceae, and Arecaceae, were identified as phytotelmata. Twenty six species of Culicidae and nine of Ceratopogonidae were identified. The highest species richness of culicids and ceratopogonids was recorded from the bamboo Guadua chacoensis (Poaceae) and treeholes, respectively. Fourteen species of Culicidae and three of Ceratopogonidae inhabit bamboo, two and five treeholes, seven and three bromeliads, and nine and one, other less known phytotelmata, respectively.

Se presenta una lista de las fitotelmata más comunes y los Culicidae y Ceratopogonidae que las habitan, del Parque Nacional Iguazú, Misiones, Argentina; además de observaciones biológicas y de comportamiento. Especies de Poaceae, Bromeliaceae, Apiaceae, Araceae, Urticaceae, Marantaceae, y Arecaceae, fueron identificadas como fitotelmata. Fueron reconocidas 26 especies de culícidos y nueve de Ceratopogonidae. La mayor riqueza de especies de culícidos y ceratopogónidos se registraron en el bambú Guadua chacoensis (Poaceae) y en los huecos de los árboles respectivamente. Catorce especies de culícidos y tres de ceratopogónidos habitan bambúes, dos y cinco en los huecos de los árboles, siete y tres en bromelias y nueve y una en otras fitotelmata, respectivamente.

This is the first literature record of the genus Stenomicra Coquillett (Diptera: Periscelididae) from South America (Neotropical Region). New information on the biological cycle of Stenomicra species in the wild is provided, and four species of the genus Eryngium L. (Apiaceae) are recorded as host plants for immature stages of this taxon. The specimens of Stenomicra sp. were collected in Sierra de la Ventana, Buenos Aires province, Argentina.

En este estudio, se publica por primera vez para Sudamérica (Región Neotropical) el género Stenomicra Coquillett (Diptera: Periscelididae). Se aporta información sobre su ciclo biológico en condiciones naturales y se mencionan cuatro especies del género Eryngium L. (Apiaceae), como plantas hospedadoras de los estados inmaduros. Los ejemplares de Stenomicra sp. fueron colectados en Sierra de la Ventana, Provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina.

One important step for the colonization of Ochlerotatus albifasciatus (Macquart) is to determine the optimal conditions for larval rearing, which makes possible the development of experiments comprising larval rearing in the laboratory. In this research the effect of diet composition on the development of O.albifasciatus was studied. For this purpose, cohorts of 20 first instars were reared using five diets: 1:1 mix of yeast and TetraMin®, 1:1 mix of fine and coarse organic matter, grass cuts soaked in water for 1h or 24h before larvae incorporation, and 1:1:1 mix of grass cuts, fine organic matter and coarse organic matter. Survival was recorded for each cohort, while development time from first instar to pupa, and adult wing length were recorded for each individual. The effects of the diet on the observed traits were analyzed by one way ANOVA. Both survival and wing length were affected by diet, being significantly higher (79-100% and ~ 4.46 mm) on diets consisting of organic matter or organic matter plus grass than on those consisting of yeast plus TetraMin® or grass. Development time was not affected by the diet, although the shortest time (8.1 to 8.3 days) and lower variation between replicates were recorded when larvae were reared using organic matter or organic matter plus grass. Thus, it is concluded that the diets consisting of organic matter or a mix of it and grass are the most effective for O.albifasciatus rearing.

Un paso importante para la colonización de Ochlerotatus albifasciatus (Macquart) es conocer las condiciones óptimas para la cría de las larvas, lo cual además posibilita el desarrollo de experimentos en el laboratorio. En este trabajo se estudió el efecto de la dieta sobre el desarrollo de O. albifasciatus. Para ello se criaron cohortes de 20 larvas I utilizando cinco tipos de dietas: una mezcla 1:1 de levadura y TetraMin®, una mezcla 1:1 de materia orgánica fina y gruesa, gramíneas cortadas y sumergidas en agua 1h o 24h antes de incorporar las larvas, y una mezcla 1:1:1 de gramíneas cortadas, materia orgánica fina y materia orgánica gruesa. Para cada cohorte se registró la supervivencia, y para cada individuo, el tiempo de desarrollo desde larva I hasta pupa y la longitud del ala de los adultos. El efecto de la dieta sobre estas características se analizó mediante un ANOVA de una vía. Los resultados mostraron que la dieta afecta la supervivencia y la longitud del ala, obteniéndose los mayores valores de estas variables (79-100 % y ~ 4,46 mm) con las dietas consistentes en materia orgánica o materia orgánica más gramíneas. El tiempo de desarrollo no estuvo afectado por la dieta, aunque el tiempo más corto (8,1-8,3 dias) y la menor variación entre réplicas se registraron al criar las larvas con materia orgánica o materia orgánica más gramíneas. Se concluye que las dietas consistentes en materia orgánica o una mezcla de ésta y gramíneas, son las más efectivas para la cría de O. albifasciatus.

The viability of Ochlerotatus albifasciatus (Macquart) eggs stored at room temperature and at 5ºC was studied over 31 months. After 12, 18 and 31 months of storage, eggs were acclimatized at 22ºC for ten days, and then inundated twice every seven days. The effect of the storage period on the percentage of hatching was analyzed by one way ANOVA. Differences on the hatching response between the first and second flooding were analyzed by paired t-test. Differences on the hatching response between the two storage conditions were analyzed by Mann-Whitney rank test. Results showed that (1) Oc. albifasciatus eggs were able to survive and hatch over 31 months; (2) the percent hatching of eggs stored at 5ºC was higher than that of eggs stored at room temperature; and (3) low temperatures and long periods without water favor installment hatching.

The role of environmental factors on the hatching response of O. albifasciatus (Macquart) eggs is studied by simulating winter conditions in the laboratory. The hypothesis tested was that hatching response is affected by: (1) time that eggs remain at low temperature, (2) storage conditions, and (3) acclimatization time. Eggs were stored at 5ºC in drought and immersion conditions during 7, 21, 35, 90 and 146 days, immediately after, they were acclimatized at 22ºC during 24, 72, and 168 hours, and then eggs were flooded to induce hatching. Percent of hatched eggs was analyzed with a Generalized Lineal Model with a binomial distribution. Results show that: (1) a long storage period at cold temperature and long acclimatization periods improve the hatching response; (2) storage conditions have a moderate effect on hatching, being more evident in eggs stored dry; (3) a long time of acclimatization favors the hatching response in submerged eggs more than in eggs stored dry; (4) long time at cold favors the hatching response in eggs stored dry more than in submerged eggs; (5) the hatching response of eggs that remain for a long time at low temperature is higher when the time of acclimatization is long.

Se estudió el rol de los factores ambientales sobre la eclosión de los huevos de O. albifasciatus (Macquart), simulando condiciones de invierno. La hipótesis planteada fue que la respuesta de eclosión de los huevos depende de: (1) tiempo de permanencia a baja temperatura, (2) condiciones de almacenamiento, y (3) tiempo de aclimatación. Los huevos fueron almacenados a 5º C en condiciones de sequía y sumergidos durante 7, 21, 35, 90 y 146 días; luego fueron aclimatados a 22º C durante 24, 72, y 168 horas y posteriormente inundados para inducir la eclosión. El porcentaje de huevos eclosionados se analizó con un Modelo Lineal Generalizado con distribución binomial. Los resultados mostraron que: (1) largos períodos de almacenamiento en frío y largos tiempos de aclimatación mejoran la respuesta de eclosión, (2) la condición de almacenamiento tiene un efecto moderado en la eclosión, siendo más marcada en los huevos almacenados en seco; (3) tiempos prolongados de aclimatación mejoran aún más las eclosiones de los huevos sumergidos, que los almacenados en seco; (4) largo tiempo en frío mejora la eclosión de los huevos almacenados en seco, que los sumergidos; (5) los huevos que permanecieron más tiempo en frío respondieron mejor cuando el tiempo de aclimatación fue prolongado.
