ABSTRACT Soil structure plays an important role in water retention, infiltration capacity, porosity, and penetration resistance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity and physical properties of Oxisol soils (bulk density and macro-, micro-, and total porosity) in the structures identified using the profil cultural method in areas under two different management practices (perennial pasture and sugarcane). Three pits were dug in each plot to find out how homogeneous morphological structural units (HMSU) were organized in the soil. Next, unsaturated hydraulic conductivity (Ki) was measured in situ inside each HMSU using a triple-ring infiltrometer at multiple suction. Six samples were collected (two samples for each kind of structural organization in each pit) to determine soil bulk density, total porosity, and macro- and microporosity. Each management practice resulted in a distribution of structures in the soil profile. The behavior of morphologically similar clods was the same, regardless of the physical manipulation of the soil. The distribution of structures based on the management practice determines specific hydraulic conductivities in the soil profile.

RESUMO Com o objetivo de compreender a dinâmica hídrica dos solos, realizou-se esta pesquisa em uma vertente, do platô da cidade de Marechal Cândido Rondon, Paraná. Foram abertas trincheiras para a descrição macromorfológica, coleta de amostras para as análises físicas, químicas, micromorfológicas e quantificação da condutividade hidráulica. No setor de topo, foi identificado o Latossolo Vermelho Eutroférrico e a partir da média baixa vertente, o Nitossolo Vermelho Distroférrico latossólico. Em termos micromorfológicos, os horizontes Ap e Bw apresentam dois tipos de arranjos distintos: um de trama enáulica, com alta conectividade - porosidade de empacotamento composto, e outro de trama porfírica contínua e/ou descontínua, com cavidades e os poros planares. Nos horizontes AB e B nítico a trama enáulica é menos representativa, predominando a trama porfírica contínua, que deixa os poros menos comunicantes. Em termos hídricos, os horizontes Ap e Bw indicaram maior condutividade hidráulica, enquanto o AB e B nítico apresentaram os menores índices, reforçando que além da densidade do solo, o arranjo dos poros interfere diretamente no comportamento hídrico do sistema pedológico.

ABSTRACT In order to comprehend the hydric dynamics of soils along the slopes, the research took place on a slope from Marechal Cândido Rondon, Paraná. Trenches were open to the macromorphological description, sample collection for physical, chemical and micromorphological analysis and quantification of hydraulic conductivity. In the top sector, Eutroferric Red Latosol was identified, and from the middle sector, the latosolic Distroferric Red Nitosol predominates. In micromorphological terms, the Ap and Bw horizons have presented two distinct types of arrangements: a continuous and/or discontinuous porphyric fabric with cavities and planar pores and other with enaulic fabric, with high connectivity - compound packing porosity. In the AB and nitic B horizons the enaulic fabric is less representative, prevailing the continuous porphyric fabrics, which make the pores less communicating. The Ap and Bw horizons have shown higher hydraulic conductivity, while AB and B nitic horizons had the lowest rates, reinforcing the notion that besides soil density, the pores arrangement directly interfereswith the hydric behavior of the pedological system.

RESUMEN Con el objetivo de comprender la dinámica hídrica de los suelos, se realizó investigación en una vertiente de la meseta de la ciudad de Marechal Cândido Rondon, Paraná. Se abrieron zanjas para la descripción macromorfológica, colecta de muestras para los análisis físicos, químicos, micromorfológicos y la cuantificación de la conductividad hidráulica. En el sector superior, fueron mapeados el Latosol Rojo Eutroférrico y a partir de la media y baja vertiente, el Nitosol Rojo Distroférrico latosólico. En los análisis micromorfológicos, los horizontes Ap y Bw presentan dos tipos de disposiciones distintas: una de trama enáulica, con poros inter- agregados con alta conectividad - porosidad de envoltorio compuesto, y otra de trama porfídica continua y descontinua, con cavidades y poros planeares. En los horizontes AB y B nítico la trama enáulica es menos representativa, predominando la trama porfídica continua, que deja los poros menos comunicantes. En términos hídricos, los horizontes Ap e Bw indicaron mayor conductividad hidráulica, mientras que el AB y B nítico presentaron los menores índices, reforzando que además de la densidad del suelo, la disposición de los poros interfiere en el comportamiento hídrico del sistema pedológico.

Considerando a importância do conhecimento do comportamento hídrico das coberturas pedológicas para os estudos de prevenção e contenção dos processos erosivos, o presente trabalho foi realizado em uma vertente com sistema pedológico "Latossolo Vermelho eutrófico/Argissolo Vermelho eutrófico", oriundo do arenito Caiuá, localizado na fazenda experimental da Universidade Estadual de Maringá, município de Cidade Gaúcha, noroeste do Estado do Paraná. Após abordagem morfológica detalhada do sistema pedológico, realizaram-se ensaios de infiltrometria nos principais horizontes diagnósticos e suas respectivas transições em seis perfis de solos dispostos ao longo da vertente. A dinâmica hídrica da cobertura latossólica encontra-se marcada por um comportamento distinto entre a superfície e a subsuperfície. Os horizontes superficiais Ap, AB e, ou, BA exibem ao longo do tempo uma alternância de condições de umidade, ora mais úmidos, ora mais secos, devido à distribuição e intensidade das chuvas. Em profundidade, no horizonte Bw, as condições hídricas dependem da movimentação da água vertical e lateral, não respondendo, portanto, diretamente às variações atmosféricas como na superfície. Na cobertura argissólica, o bloqueio da drenagem vertical ocorre no topo do Bt, gerando acima (horizonte AE) uma zona mais constantemente úmida. De modo geral, os horizontes superficiais dos Argissolos não apresentam as alternâncias de umedecimento e secamento verificadas nos Latossolos; permanecem sempre mais úmidos do que aqueles, em razão dos fluxos hídricos laterais de montante.

Considering the importance of understanding the water status of pedological covers for studies of prevention and containment of erosive processes, this study was conducted on a slope with a pedological system composed of Red Latossol (Oxisol)/Red Argisol (Ultisol) derived from Caiuá sandstone, on an experimental farm of the Universidade Estadual de Maringá, Cidade Gaúcha, in Northwestern Paraná State. After a detailed morphologic description of the pedologic system, infiltration experiments were carried out in the main diagnostic horizons and the respective transitions of six soil profiles along the slope. The pattern of water dynamics in the latosolic cover is different in the surface and subsurface. Over the course of time, the surface horizons AP, AB and/or BA have alternating humidity conditions, sometimes more humid and sometimes drier, according to the rain distribution and intensity. In deeper layers of the Bw horizon the water conditions depend on the vertical and lateral water movement, and are therefore not directly related to the atmospheric variations, as occur on the surface. In the podzolic cover a vertical drainage blockage was observed in the top of Bt horizon, generating above it (horizon AE) a more constantly humid zone. In general, unlike in the Latosols, humidity and dryness do not alternate in the surface horizons of the Argisol. As a result the Argisols are constantly more humid than Latosols due to lateral water flow from upslope.
