ABSTRACT The seed deterioration process during storage is inevitable, but it can be slowed down using packaging that reduces the influence of the external environment on stored corn seeds. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the physiological quality of corn seeds stored in different packages and subjected to storage conditions in the central region of Brazil. Thirty-seven corn genotypes were analyzed in three storage environments: multiwall paper, 10 °C temperature, and 40% relative air humidity; multiwall paper under uncontrolled conditions; and hermetic packaging under uncontrolled conditions. The results of germination, water content, electrical conductivity, accelerated aging, soilless cold test, and field emergence test were used. ABSTRACT Knowledge on plant-atmosphere interactions is essential to understand the growth and development of agricultural crops. Thus, fitting growth curves is an important methodology to model plant growth and phenological stages. The study aimed to describe the growth of four oilseed flax materials cultivated in six agricultural years and with different sowing dates through the nonlinear logistic model. Nine experiments were carried out in Curitibanos, SC, Brazil, between 2014 and 2020, considering different sowing dates. Throughout the crop cycle, the number of leaves, number of secondary stems, plant height and total dry mass were measured. Nonlinear logistic model was fitted to the data, with the growth variables as the dependent variables and the accumulated thermal sum as the independent variable. Model fit and parameter estimation were obtained by ordinary least method, using a Gauss-Newton algorithm. The goodness of fit was measured by intrinsic and parametric nonlinearity, adjusted coefficient of determination, random standard error, standard deviation of fit, Akaike information criterion, and Bayesian information criterion. The performance of the nonlinear logistic model differed between the varieties and cultivars studied, in different years and sowing times. However, the use of the nonlinear logistic model improves inferences about the growth of oilseed flax, and the estimates of its parameters and critical points allow a biological and practical interpretation to assist in crop planning. RESUMO O conhecimento das interações planta-atmosfera é essencial para compreender o crescimento e desenvolvimento das culturas. Assim, o ajuste de curvas de crescimento é metodologia importante para modelar o crescimento das plantas e seus estágios fenológicos. O estudo teve por objetivo descrever o crescimento de quatro materiais de linhaça cultivados em seis anos agrícolas e em diferentes épocas de semeadura por meio do modelo logístico. Nove experimentos foram conduzidos em Curitibanos, SC, Brasil, entre 2014 e 2020, considerando diferentes épocas de semeadura. Durante o ciclo da cultura, foram avaliados número de folhas, número de caules secundários, altura da planta e massa seca total. O modelo logístico foi ajustado considerando as variáveis de crescimento como dependentes e a soma térmica acumulada como independente. O ajuste do modelo e estimação dos parâmetros foram obtidos pelo método dos mínimos quadrados ordinários. A qualidade do ajuste foi mensurada por não linearidade intrínseca e paramétrica, coeficiente de determinação ajustado, erro padrão aleatório, desvio padrão do ajuste, critério de informação de Akaike e critério de informação Bayesiano. O desempenho do modelo logístico divergiu entre as variedades e cultivares, em diferentes anos e épocas de semeadura. Contudo, o uso do modelo logístico melhora as inferências sobre o crescimento da linhaça e, as estimativas de seus parâmetros e pontos críticos permitem uma interpretação biológica e prática a fim de auxiliar no planejamento da cultura. RESUMO O manejo do nitrogênio analisando indicadores agronômicos e ambientais garante produtividade satisfatória com maior qualidade ambiental. O objetivo neste estudo é propor um manejo mais sustentável de uso do nitrogênio em trigo, considerando o fornecimento em dose cheia e fracionada com estimativa da eficiência técnica, econômica e de expectativa de produtividade. Dois experimentos foram conduzidos, um para quantificar a produtividade de biomassa e outro, para avaliação do rendimento de grãos. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados com quatro repetições em fatorial 5 × 3, para doses de N-fertilizante (0, 30, 60, 90 e 120 kg ha-1) e forma de fornecimento do nutriente [condição cheia (100%) no estádio fenológico V3 (terceira folha expandida); fracionada (70/30%) no estádio fenológico V3/V6 (terceira e sexta folha expandida) e; fracionada (70/30%) no estádio fenológico V3/R1 (início da antese)], respectivamente. O manejo mais sustentável do nitrogênio em trigo é obtido com a dose de expectativa de produtividade de 3 t ha-1 pela adubação manual, com o nutriente fornecido em dose cheia no estádio fenológico V3.

ABSTRACT The management of nitrogen by the assessment of agronomic and environmental indicators ensures satisfactory productivity with higher environmental quality. The objective of this study was to propose more sustainable management of nitrogen use in wheat, considering the supply of full and fractioned doses with an estimate of technical, economic efficiency, and expected productivity. Two experiments were conducted, one to quantify biomass productivity and the other to evaluate grain yield. The experimental design consisted of a randomized block with four repetitions in a 5 × 3 factorial, for N-fertilizer doses (0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 kg ha-1) and nutrient supply form [full condition (100%) in the phenological stage V3 (the third leaf expanded); fractionated (70/30%) in the phenological stage V3/V6 (third and sixth leaf expanded) and; fractionated (70/30%) in the phenological stage V3/R1 (beginning of anthesis)], respectively. The most sustainable management of nitrogen in wheat was obtained with the expected yield rate of 3 t ha-1 by manual fertilization, with nitrogen supplied in full dose at the V3 phenological stage.

RESUMO Na busca em determinar a qualidade das sementes por meio de testes rápidos e eficazes, objetivou-se avaliar a influência de procedimentos de pré-umedecimento na determinação da viabilidade de sementes de coentro pelo teste de tetrazólio. Foram utilizados dez lotes de coentro. O experimento foi realizado em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 10x2 (10 lotes x umedecimento e embebição em água) com quatro repetições. As sementes de cada lote foram previamente avaliadas por meio do teor de água, da germinação com e sem tratamento químico com fungicida e da emergência de plântulas em areia. O pré-umedecimento das sementes foi realizado entre rolo de papel e por imersão em água, ambos por 16 horas a 20ºC. Apesar de ter havido diferença entre as formas de pré-umedecimento, as diferenças nos percentuais de eficiências entre formas de pré-umedecimentos não foram significativas. Assim, pondera-se que ambas as formas de pré-umedecimentos são adequadas. As sementes de coentro foram influenciadas pelo pré-umedecimento resultando em uma rápida avaliação de sua viabilidade através do teste de tetrazólio, podendo ser realizado o pré-umedecimento por imersão em água ou papel, mediante corte longitudinal.

ABSTRACT Searching to determine the quality of seeds using rapid and effective tests, the aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of pre-wetting procedures on determining the viability of coriander seeds by the tetrazolium test. Ten seed batches of coriander were used. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, in a 10x2 factorial scheme (10 batches x moistening and soaking in water) with four replications. Seeds of each batch were previously evaluated through water content, germination with and without fungicide treatment, and the emergence of seedlings in the sand. The seeds were pre-wetted in two ways: rolls of filter paper and directly in water for 16 hours at 20ºC temperature. Despite the numerical difference between the pre-wetting forms, these differences were not significant. Thus, we considered that both ways of pre-wetting are appropriate. Coriander seeds were influenced by pre-wetting, resulting in a quick availability evaluation through the tetrazolium test. Thus, pre-wetting can be carried out by water immersion or paper through longitudinal cutting.

RESUMO A eficiência do nitrogênio na aveia associada às condições climáticas são fundamentais no desenvolvimento de manejos sustentáveis com produtividade e qualidade. Objetivou-se neste estudo definir a eficiência agronômica do nitrogênio pela relação dose fornecida e produto obtido, estimar a máxima eficiência técnica do nutriente na produtividade de grãos, e pela dose ideal, simular a expressão da produtividade de palha e de indústria, proteína e fibra total em diferentes condições do ano agrícola no sistema soja/aveia. O estudo foi conduzido de 2011 a 2016, em Augusto Pestana, RS, em delineamento de blocos casualizados com quatro repetições em esquema fatorial 4 x 2 referente a doses de nitrogênio (0, 30, 60 e 120 kg ha-1) e cultivares de aveia (Barbarasul e Brisasul) no sistema soja/aveia. O nitrogênio incrementa a produtividade de grãos, de palha, de indústria e o teor de proteína dos grãos, com eficiência agronômica de 7,8, 19,7 e 3,3 kg ha-1 e 0,10 g kg-1, respectivamente, com redução na fibra total de grãos de 0,05 g kg-1 por kg de N fornecido. A dose de máxima eficiência técnica na expressão da produtividade de grãos depende das condições de cultivo. Em geral, a máxima eficiência de produtividade de grãos é obtida com 86 kg ha-1 de N, com equações lineares que mostram acréscimos da produtividade da palha e de indústria e a proteína total, e redução do teor de fibras dos grãos de aveia pelo uso do nitrogênio.

ABSTRACT The efficiency of nitrogen use by oats in association with climatic conditions is fundamental to the development of more sustainable managements with yield and quality. The objectives of this study were to define the agronomic efficiency of nitrogen by the ratio of the dose provided and product obtained, estimate the maximum technical efficiency of the nutrient on grain yield; and for the optimum dose, simulate the expression of the straw and industry yields, protein and total fiber in different conditions of the agricultural year in a soybean/oat system. The study was conducted from 2011 to 2016, in Augusto Pestana, RS, Brazil, in a randomized block design with four repetitions in a 4 x 2 factorial referring to nitrogen doses (0, 30, 60 and 120 kg ha-1) and oat cultivars (Barbarasul and Brisasul) in a soybean/oat system. Nitrogen increased grain, straw, and industry yields and total grain protein, with agronomic efficiency of 7.8, 19.7 and 3.3 kg ha-1 and 0.10 g kg-1, respectively, with reduction of the total fiber in 0.05 g kg-1 per kg of N supplied. The dose of maximum technical efficiency in the expression of grain yield is dependent on the weather conditions during cultivation. In general, the maximum efficiency of grain productivity was obtained with 86 kg ha-1 of N, with linear equations showing increased productivity of straw and industry yield, total protein, and reduction of the fiber content of oat grains by nitrogen use.

RESUMO A eficiência de uso do nitrogênio pela cultura do trigo depende de estímulos genéticos e ambientais. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a eficiência do uso do nitrogênio pela cultura do trigo, através dos indicadores de biomassa, produtividade e qualidade dos grãos, em função do genótipo e da safra anterior, em sistemas de cultivo do cereal no sul do Brasil. Os experimentos foram conduzidos nos sistemas soja/trigo e milho/trigo nos anos de 2015, 2016 e 2017, em Augusto Pestana, RS, Brasil. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados com quatro repetições, seguindo o esquema fatorial 5 × 4, referente a cinco cultivares de trigo (Quartzo, TBIO Sinuelo, TBIO Sintonia, TEC 10 e TEC Vigore) e quatro doses de nitrogênio (0, 60, 120 e 180 kg ha-1) aplicadas em cobertura em estádio fenológico de terceira folha expandida, estádio 13. Existem diferenças genéticas de uso do nitrogênio sobre a elaboração da produtividade e qualidade química de grãos de trigo, com influência dos sistemas de cultivo de alta e reduzida relação carbono/nitrogênio, comumente empregado no sul do Brasil. A maior eficiência de uso do nitrogênio na expressão da produtividade de grãos de trigo é obtida com as cultivares Quartzo e TBIO Sinuelo. Além disso, com a TBIO Sinuelo de maior contribuição na expressão de palha e a Quartzo na concentração de proteína dos grãos, na dose de nitrogênio para expectativa de 3 Mg ha-1, independente do sistema de sucessão, na análise conjunta dos anos agrícolas.

ABSTRACT The efficiency of nitrogen use by wheat crop depends on genetic and environmental stimuli. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of nitrogen use by wheat crop, through biomass, productivity and grain quality indicators, as a function of the genotype and previous harvest, in Southern Brazil cereal cultivation systems. The experiments were conducted in soybean/wheat and maize/wheat systems during 2015, 2016, and 2017 in Augusto Pestana, RS, Brazil. The experimental design was a randomized block with four repetitions, following a 5 × 4 factorial scheme, referring to five wheat cultivars (Quartzo, TBIO Sinuelo, TBIO Sintonia, TEC 10 and TEC Vigore) and four nitrogen doses (0, 60, 120 and 180 kg ha-1) applied as a topdressing during the phenological stage of the expanded third leaf, stage 13. There were genetic differences in nitrogen use efficiency, for the productivity (yield and biomass) and quality of wheat. However, these genetic differences were influenced by the carbon:nitrogen ratios of the previous crop. Quartzo and TBIO Sinuelo had the greatest nitrogen use efficiency for grain yield, TBIO Sinuelo had the greatest nitrogen use efficiency for biomass production and Quartzo had the greatest nitrogen use efficiency for grain quality with expectation of 3 Mg ha-1, regardless of the succession system, in the joint analysis of agricultural years.

RESUMO O momento de aplicação de nitrogênio em aveia pode melhorar a eficiência de aproveitamento do nutriente e a expressão da produtividade e qualidade de grãos. O objetivo do estudo foi indicar a melhor época de aplicação de nitrogênio em aveia, considerando diferentes condições de fornecimento de doses de nitrogênio na semeadura e em cobertura na produtividade e nos indicadores da qualidade industrial e química de grãos, considerando dois sistemas de sucessão de cultivo do cereal no Brasil. O experimento foi conduzido no ano de 2018, em Augusto Pestana, RS, Brasil. O delineamento foi o de blocos casualizados com quatro repetições, em esquema fatorial 3 × 4, para três doses de nitrogênio na semeadura (0, 30 e 60 kg ha-1) alterando a dose em cobertura pelo total fornecido de 70 e 100 kg ha-1 em sistema soja/aveia e milho/aveia, respectivamente. O fornecimento do nutriente em cobertura foi em quatro épocas (0, 10, 30 e 60 dias) após a emergência da aveia. A ausência do nutriente na semeadura e aplicação da dose total em cobertura ao redor de 30 dias após emergência proporciona resultados vantajosos, melhorando a produtividade e indicadores da qualidade industrial e química dos grãos.

ABSTRACT The timing of nitrogen application in oats can improve the efficiency of use of the nutrient and the expression of productivity and quality of grains. The objective of the study was to indicate the best time of application of nitrogen in oats, considering different conditions of nitrogen dose in the sowing/topdressing in the expression of productivity and the effects on the indicators of industrial and chemical quality of grains, considering the main succession systems of cereal cultivation in Brazil. The experiment was conducted in 2018, in Augusto Pestana, RS, Brazil. The design was randomized blocks with four repetitions, in a 3 × 4 factorial scheme, with three doses of nitrogen at sowing (0, 30 and 60 kg ha-1), changing the topdressing dose by the total supply of 70 and 100 kg ha-1 in succession system soybean/oats and corn/oats, respectively, with the timings of supply in topdressing at 0, 10, 30 and 60 days after emergence. The total doses were defined looking for grain yield expectations of 4000 kg ha-1. In the management of nitrogen in oats, the absence of the nutrient at sowing and application of the total dose in topdressing around 30 days after emergence provides advantageous results, improving productivity and indicators of industrial and chemical quality of grains.

Abstract In plant breeding, the dialelic models univariate have aided the selection of parents for hybridization. Multivariate analyses allow combining and associating the multiple pieces of information of the genetic relationships between traits. Therefore, multivariate analyses might refine the discrimination and selection of the parents with greater potential to meet the goals of a plant breeding program. Here, we propose a method of multivariate analysis used for stablishing mega-traits (MTs) in diallel trials. The proposed model is applied in the evaluation of a multi-environment complete diallel trial with 90 F1’s of simple maize hybrids. From a set of 14 traits, we demonstrated how establishing and interpreting MTs with agronomic implication. The diallel analyzes based on mega-traits present an important evolution in statistical procedures since the selection is based on several traits. We believe that the proposed method fills an important gap of plant breeding. In our example, three MTs were established. The first, formed by plant stature-related traits, the second by tassel size-related traits, and the third by grain yield-related traits. Individual and joint diallel analysis using the established MTs allowed identifying the best hybrid combinations for achieving F1’s with lower plant stature, tassel size, and higher grain yield.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar morfologicamente a dissimilaridade genética entre 25 genótipos de milho (Zea mays L.), visando a seleção dos mais divergentes e de maior potencial produtivo, por meio da análise multivariada, em cinco ambientes de cultivo do Sul do Brasil. As linhagens endogâmicas dos dois grupos heteróticos foram provenientes do banco de germoplasma da empresa KSP Sementes Ltda. Utilizaram-se 15 linhagens como genitores femininos e oito linhagens como genitores masculinos. Os ensaios foram conduzidos na safra agrícola 2011/2012 em cinco ambientes, com delineamento de blocos completos ao acaso com três repetições por local. Foram avaliados 15 caracteres de interesse agronômico. A divergência genética foi avaliada por meio do método de agrupamento de Tocher e UPGMA. As estimativas da D² indicam os pares de genótipos 6 e 22 como mais distantes geneticamente, e 1 e 14 os pares mais similares. Foram identificados nove grupos divergentes em ambos os métodos de agrupamento. Os caracteres profundidade de grãos, diâmetro do sabugo, massa de sabugo, diâmetro de espiga e peso de 100 grãos foram os principais determinantes na quantificação da divergência genética. Para o melhoramento de milho, os genótipos com maiores potenciais são 5, 15, 12, 20, 9, 25 e 10.

The aim of this study was to morphologically characterize the genetic dissimilarity among 25 maize (Zea mays L.) genotypes in order to select the most divergent and higher yield potential, by multivariate analysis, in five cultivation environments in southern Brazil. The inbred lines of the two heterotic groups were from the genebank company KSP Seeds Ltda. Fifteen inbred lines were used as female parents and eight inbred lines as male parents. The tests were conducted during the harvest 2011/2012 in five environments, in randomized complete block design with three replications per location. We evaluated 15 characters of agronomic interest. Genetic divergence was assessed by the clustering method of Tocher and UPGMA. Estimates of D² indicated genotype pairs 6 and 22 as genetically more distant, and 1 and 14 the most similar pairs. Nine different groups were identified in both clustering methods. The depth of grain, cob diameter, cob weight, ear diameter and weight of 100 grains characters were the main determinants in the quantification of genetic divergence. For breeding purposes, genotypes 5, 15, 12, 20, 9, 25 and 10 are those of higher potential.
