ABSTRACT New food concepts and categories are constantly evolving, and it is difficult to communicate this updated nutrition knowledge efficiently and transparently, resulting in knowledge gaps that make it difficult for consumers to make informed healthy eating choices. With this in mind, this work aims to help clarify new nutrition categories and definitions and help educate consumers, as well as health professionals, about the potential impact of these foods on health, based on current scientific evidence.

RESUMO A conceptualização e categorização de alimentos é um processo em constante atualização e é importante que qualquer evolução relevante se transmita de maneira eficiente, transparente e regular a toda a população. Desta forma, o consumidor tem a possibilidade de fazer uma seleção, informada, de produtos que se adequem a uma alimentação saudável. Tendo isso em mente, este artigo sintetiza a informação disponível acerca de determinadas categorias, tipos e definições de alimentos e pretende contribuir para que os consumidores entendam o potencial impacto que estes alimentos podem ter na sua saúde, com base em evidências científicas atuais.

ABSTRACT Objective Weight regain is a common outcome of weight loss interventions. Mental health-related comorbidities, among other factors, can mediate weight regain regardless of the implemented treatment modality. This study explores whether postoperative psychopathological comorbidities are associated with weight regain after bariatric surgery. Subjects and methods This cross-sectional study recruited 90 outpatients who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. Anthropometric measurements were collected retrospectively from medical charts. The Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder-IV (DSM-IV) Axis I Disorders (SCID-I) was applied to evaluate psychiatry diagnoses. Validated self-report instruments were used to assess depression, anxiety, alcohol use, impulsivity, binge eating, and body image dissatisfaction. Weight regain was defined as a ≥20% increase from the maximum weight lost. Level of evidence: Level III, cross-sectional study based on a well-designed study. Results Overall, 55.6% of participants experienced weight regain. Notably, mental disorders such as current binge-eating disorder and lifetime diagnoses including bulimia nervosa, alcohol abuse/dependence, and obsessive-compulsive disorder were significantly associated with weight regain. However, controlled analysis found that, for mental disorders, only current binge-eating disorder (odds ratio [OR] 6.3, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.26-31.06, p = 0.024) remained associated with weight regain. Eating-related psychopathologies also associated with weight regain included binge eating (d = 0.55; p = 0.013), eating disinhibition (d = 0.76; p = 0.001), higher hunger levels (d = 0.39; p = 0.004), and non-planning trait impulsivity (d = 0.69; p = 0.0001). Conclusion Postoperative presence of psychopathological comorbidities, such as eating psychopathology and trait impulsivity, were associated with weight regain after bariatric surgery. Abstract This systematic review aimed to answer the focused question: “What are the benefits of subgingival periodontal therapy on blood hematological and biochemical index, biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress, quality of life, and periodontal pathogen counts in patients with obesity and periodontitis?”. A systematic literature search was performed in six databases: PubMed, Embase, LILACS, Web of Science, Cochrane and SCOPUS and other sources, and a manual search was conducted as well. Inclusion criteria were randomized and non-randomized clinical trials, and before-and-after studies on patients with obesity subjected to periodontal therapy. The results were synthesized qualitatively. Risk of bias within studies was assessed using RoB 2 and ROBINS-I tools. The certainty of evidence was evaluated following the GRADE approach. Three randomized controlled trials and 15 before-and-after studies were included. Randomized controlled trials were considered to have a low risk of bias, as compared to before-and-after studies assessed as having low, serious, and critical risks of bias. Non-surgical periodontal therapy plus azithromycin, chlorhexidine, and cetylpyridinium chloride reduced blood pressure and decreased serum levels of HbA1c, hsCRP, IL-1β, and TNF-α. Resumo A literatura que articula o desenvolvimento de carreira com a leitura é escassa. Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar a fluência leitora de estudantes universitários, considerando a escolha de cursos mais/menos desejados. A desejabilidade tem por base as classificações de acesso ao Ensino Superior. Participaram 211 estudantes, 132 de sexo feminino, a frequentar quatro cursos: Engenharia Mecânica, Saúde, Psicologia e Educação, em três instituições públicas de ensino superior portuguesas. Os instrumentos utilizados foram ficha sociodemográfica e Teste da Idade de Leitura- TIL. Os resultados indicaram que estudantes de cursos menos desejados (i.e., Educação e Saúde) são significativamente menos fluentes e; estudantes com menor fluência leitora são mais prováveis de pertencerem à Educação. Este estudo destaca a importância da distribuição pelas diferentes áreas de estudo não ser um espelho de assimetrias ao nível de competências leitoras.

Abstract The literature that links career development with reading skills is scarce. This study seeks to fill this gap, for which the reading fluency of college students was analyzed, taking into account the choice of more/less desirable courses. Desirability is based on the classifications for college access. 211 students participated in the study, 132 female, attending four courses: Mechanical Engineering, Health, Psychology, and Education, in three Portuguese Public Universities. The instruments used were the sociodemographic form and the Teste de Idade de Leitura (Reading Age Test - TIL). The results indicated that students attending less desirable courses (i.e., Education and Health) are significantly less fluent and; students who score lower on reading fluency are more likely to belong to the Education course. This study stresses the importance of the distribution of students by the different areas of studies should not reflect reading fluency asymmetries.

Resumen La literatura que vincula desarrollo profesional con habilidades lectoras es escasa. Este estudio busca llenar este vacío, analizando la fluidez lectora de estudiantes universitarios en cursos más/menos deseables. La deseabilidad de los cursos se basa en las clasificaciones de acceso a la Universidad. Participaron 211 estudiantes, 132 mujeres, de cuatro cursos: Ingeniería Mecánica, Salud, Psicología y Educación, en tres universidades públicas portuguesas. Los instrumentos utilizados fueron la ficha sociodemográfica y el Test de Edad Lectora - TIL. Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito de fatores extrínsecos (tipo de carne, preço e alegações nutricionais) sobre a intenção de compra e a percepção de fatores intrínsecos (maciez, suculência e sabor) em lombo de búfalo, em uma região do Brasil onde a comercialização de carne de búfalo não é comum. As fotos dos bifes foram tratadas e os rótulos foram projetados para simular o processo de compra a varejo, sendo os efeitos dos fatores extrínsecos avaliados através da conjoint analysis. Testes sensoriais de diferença do controle, intenção de compra e aceitação global foram realizados para os fatores intrínsecos. Em relação ao processo de compra, um fator determinante foi o preço, sendo que a carne de búfalo teve melhor intenção de compra quando associada a um menor preço. O menor preço também mostrou ser mais importante do que a presença de informações nutricionais para a maioria dos entrevistados, porém as informações nutricionais foram valorizadas pelos consumidores com mais de 50 anos. Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the effect of extrinsic factors (meat type, price, and nutritional claims) on purchase intention and the perception of intrinsic factors (tenderness, juiciness and flavor) in buffalo loin in a region of Brazil where the marketing of buffalo meat is not common. Photos of the steaks were treated and labels were designed to simulate the retail purchase process, with the effects of extrinsic factors being evaluated through conjoint analysis. Sensory tests of difference from control, purchase intention, and overall acceptance were performed for intrinsic factors. Regarding the purchase process, a determining factor was the price, with buffalo meat having a better purchase intention when associated with a lower price. The lowest price also proved to be more important than the presence of nutritional information for most respondents, however, nutritional information was necessary for consumers characterized over 50 years old. Good acceptance was perceived after tasting buffalo meat, even with less tenderness and juiciness compared to Nellore, and only a minority respondents were willing to pay more for it. ABSTRACT Motivated by the lack of studies that standardize and optimize the parameters of texture tests, this study aimed to determine the operating conditions for TPA to maximize the discrimination among samples of fruit preserves. The texture of the commercial guava preserves was evaluated using a texturometer. The Design Central Composite Rotational (DCCR) method was applied with four independent variables: speed test, sample volume, time between compression cycles and compression percentage. Only the compression percentage and test speed were significantly influenced by the texture parameters evaluated. The optimum operating region of TPA to better discriminate differences in texture parameters depended on the variable to be optimized, and for adhesiveness a compression of 75% and a compression speed of 0.23 mm·s are recommended. To detect differences among the samples for the parameters of cohesiveness, gumminess and resilience, the use of 15% compression and 2.59 mm·s speed is suggested. In both cases, one must employ the shortest time between two cycles and use a smaller sample size to save both the time of analysis and of the sample, respectively. For the parameters of hardness, elasticity and chewiness, optimal regions were not identified.

Abstract Background: Obesity has repercussions on functional capacity (FC). The six-minute walk test (6MWT) is a useful tool for assessing submaximal FC, and the distance reached at 6 minutes of walking (D6MW) is a relevant prognostic marker. Objective: This paper aims to establish a reference equation for the distance predicted in 6MWT in obese Brazilian subjects. Methods: This study included 460 patients (306 women), with a body mass index (BMI) > 30 kg/m2, 71% (328) of whom presented a grade III obesity (BMI ≥ 40 Kg/m²) and were evaluated with 6MWT. Heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation and Borg scale perception of effort were recorded before and after the 6MWT. For statistical analysis, Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests, an unpaired T-Test, Pearson's correlation, and multiple linear regression were used, together with a significance level set at p<0.05. Results: Gender, age, and BMI were significantly correlated with D6MW and were identified by multiple linear regression as the best predictors of the D6MW. Together, they explain 48.7% of the D6MW variance for obese Brazilian subjects. Based on these findings, an equation was proposed – D6MW = 930.138 + (27.130 x Genderfemales = 0; males = 1) − (5.550 x BMI kg/m2) − (4.442 x Age years). When the average of the D6MW obtained with the above equation was compared to the average calculated with the equations described in medical literature for healthy and obese individuals, the latter tended to overestimate the D6MW. Conclusion: The proposed reference equation exhibited better assessment of FC in obese Brazilian patients, providing proper subsidies for the follow up ofinterventions in this population..

Resumen Introducción: Actualmente, con el aumento de la obesidad en el mundo y del número de obesos mórbidos se evidencia un problema de salud pública de difícil resolución. Objetivo: analizar las respuestas fisiológicas tras las pruebas de caminata de 6 minutos y de esfuerzo máximo en cicloergómetro de brazos en obesas mórbidas precirugía bariátrica. Métodos: se evaluaron 15 mujeres con obesidad grado III con edad media de 35,6 ± 6,6 años, las cuales participaron inicialmente de una anamnesis con el análisis de la composición corporal y posteriormente participaron en días alternos de la prueba de 6 minutos de caminata y del mismo, prueba de esfuerzo máximo en cicloergómetro de brazos. Resultados: las pacientes lograron realizar la prueba de esfuerzo máximo y demostraron mejores potenciales aeróbicos en el cicloergómetro de brazos que en la prueba de caminata. No se encontraron diferencias significativas entre la SPO2 y la presión arterial diastólica entre los momentos de reposo y después de las pruebas y también en la presión arterial sistólica posterior a la prueba de caminata y los valores de reposo y después de 5 minutos en la prueba de esfuerzo máximo. Las principales diferencias se observaron entre la presión arterial sistólica máxima en la prueba en cicloergómetro y los otros momentos y en la frecuencia cardiaca después de las pruebas y las frecuencias cardiacas en reposo. Conclusión: la prueba de esfuerzo máximo en cicloergómetro de brazos es un método seguro que posibilita mayor exigencia y control aplicado al sistema cardíaco que en la prueba de caminata. Adicionalmente, permite un programa de entrenamiento y una prescripción del ejercicio físico aeróbico más individualizados.

Abstract Introduction: nowadays, with the increase of world obesity and the numbers of morbidly obese people, a concerning public health problem that is difficult to solve rises up. Objective: to analyse the physiological responses after the 6-minute walk tests and maximum stress test in the arm cycle ergometer in morbidly obese pre-bariatric surgery women. Methods: fifteen level III obesity women aged 35.6 ± 6.6 years took part in this experiment. Firstly, they went through an anamnesis and body composition analysis; secondly, they were submitted to a 6-minute walk test and a maximum stress test in arm cycle ergometer on alternate days. Results: patients were able to perform the maximum stress test and showed better aerobic potentials in the arm cycle ergometer than in the 6-minute walk test. No significant differences were found between SPO2 and diastolic blood pressure between the moments of rest and after the tests, neither in the systolic blood pressure after the 6-minute walk test and the values of rest and post 5 minutes in the maximum stress test. The main differences found were between the maximum systolic blood pressure in the cycle ergometer test and the other moments and the heart rate after the tests and the heart rate at rest. Conclusion: the maximum stress test in arm cycle ergometer is a safe method that allows greater requirement and control applied to the heart system than in the 6-minute walk test. In addition, it allows the development of a more individualized aerobic training and prescription of aerobic physical exercise program.

Abstract Obesity is a major public health problem worldwide. It has a complex etiology, influenced by environmental and genetic factors. FTO has been recognized as an important genetic factor for obesity development. This study evaluated the contribution of FTO polymorphisms (rs9939609 and rs17817449) for extreme obesity in terms of the period of obesity onset, anthropometric, and biochemical parameters. The haplotype and the combined effects of FTO risk alleles on obesity susceptibility were evaluated. We investigated 169 normal-weight subjects (body mass index, BMI: 22.8 [21.0; 24.0] kg/m2) and 123 extremely obese individuals (BMI: 47.6 [44.1; 53.1] kg/m2). Genotyping was performed by real time PCR. Our results showed a strong association between FTO variants and extreme obesity. Carriers of the AT haplotype had an increased risk for extreme obesity. Gene scores suggested that the risk of developing extreme obesity was increased 1.37-fold per risk allele added. Both polymorphisms also influenced BMI and body weight. Additionally, rs17817449 influenced triglyceride levels. No effect of FTO variants on the period of obesity onset was found. In conclusion, the FTO polymorphisms showed a strong association with development of extreme phenotype of obesity and adiposity modulation in a Brazilian population.

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between inflammatory cytokines, placental weight, glycated hemoglobin and adverse perinatal outcomes (APOs) in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Subjects and methods: This was a prospective, longitudinal and observational study conducted from April 2004 to November 2005 in Bauru, Brazil. Included patients had singleton pregnancies and performed a 100 g OGTT and had the levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin (IL)-6, TNF alfa and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) determined at 24-28th gestation weeks. Results: A total of 176 patients were included, of whom 78 had the diagnosis of GDM (44.3%). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that HbA1c, age, body mass index (BMI) and previous history of GDM were independent predictors for GDM diagnosis. ROC curve indicated that HbA1C levels ≥ 5.1% at 24-28 weeks gestation were associated with GDM. No difference was found in IL-6, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) and CRP serum levels in women with and without GDM. Multivariate analysis showed that placental weight was significantly associated with APOs (p < 0.005), with a cut-off value of 610 grams as demonstrated by the ROC curve. Conclusion: Placental weight ≥ 610 grams and HbA1C ≥ 5.1% were found to be associated with APOs and GDM, respectively, and their evaluation should be part of prenatal care routine.

Resumo A variedade de rótulos genéricos disponíveis tem sido marcante no setor farmacêutico nacional o que possibilita ao consumidor ampla liberdade de escolha dentre as várias apresentações existentes para um mesmo medicamento. Reconhecidas como equivalentes em qualidade e eficácia, essas apresentações diferem entre si apenas em pontos externos a formulação, como marca, preço, propaganda, embalagem etc. Nesse contexto, conhecer os determinantes que levam a uma escolha específica tem particular importância na medida em que pode proporcionar um adequado posicionamento frente aos reais desejos dos clientes, resultando em um diferencial competitivo. Assim, o enfoque desse estudo são percepções, entendimentos e possíveis impactos gerados pela embalagem de medicamentos genéricos em uma pequena cidade do interior de Minas Gerais. O objetivo central deste artigo é levantar aspectos ligados à embalagem de medicamentos genéricos considerados pelos consumidores como elementos de escolha e preferência. Para o estudo foram realizados dois grupos focais e observações diretas junto aos consumidores de medicamentos genéricos, para captação de impressões a partir de várias apresentações de um mesmo medicamento, seguido da formulação e aplicação de um questionário em uma cidade de Minas Gerais. O questionário formulado foi dividido em quatro blocos, com informações pessoais; aspectos gerais sobre os medicamentos; percepção da embalagem e Avaliação de cenários. Por fim, é apresentado o tratamento e análise dos dados obtidos que serviram de base para as conclusões do estudo.

Abstract The variety of generic drugs available has been remarkable in the Brazilian pharmaceutical sector, which allows the consumer wide freedom of choice among the various presentations for the same agent. Recognized as equivalent in quality and effectiveness, these presentations differ only in external aspects of the formulation, such as brand, price, advertisement, packaging, etc. In this context, knowing the determinants that lead to a specific choice is very important since it can provide adequate positioning according to the real consumer perception, resulting in a competitive differential. Thus, the focus of this study is perception, understanding and possible impact generated by the packaging and label of generic drugs in a small city located in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The main objective of this article is to raise aspects related to the packaging of generic drugs considered by consumers as elements of choice and preference. For the study, two focus groups and direct observations were made with consumers of generic drugs, to acquire impressions from several labels of the same drug, followed by the formulation and application of a questionnaire. The questionnaire was divided into four blocks, with (1) personal information; (2) general aspects of drugs understanding; (3) packaging perception; and (4) scenario evaluation. Finally, the treatment and analysis of the data obtained as the basis for the conclusions of the study is presented.

RESUMO: Objetivou-se investigar a extração e caracterização de concentrados proteicos obtidos de miúdos suínos (coração, fígado e rins) pela técnica da solubilização isoelétrica. A partir das curvas de solubilidade (pH 2 a 12), a extração proteica foi realizada em pH alcalino (10,0 a 11,5), obtendo-se concentrados de duas frações: solúvel (CS) e insolúvel (CI). Maiores teores de proteína (71 a 77%) e solubilidade proteica (214 a 459 mg/g) foram observados nos concentrados do coração e do fígado, enquanto para a capacidade de reter água (CRA) os maiores valores (4,20 a 4,54 g água/g proteína) foram para os concentrados de coração (CS) e rins (CS e CI). Todos os concentrados apresentaram alta capacidade estabilizante e maior CRA do que extensores proteicos comerciais (soro de leite e soja). Os concentrados obtidos da fração solúvel eram mais vermelhos (maiores valores de a* e menores de h) e mais escuros (baixos valores de L*) do que os insolúveis, especialmente os concentrados de coração e fígado. O uso dos concentrados na elaboração de salsichas alterou ligeiramente a saturação (C*) da cor das amostras. Concluiu-se que os concentrados de subprodutos suínos apresentam grande potencial de uso como extensores na elaboração de salsichas.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to investigate the extraction and characterization of protein concentrates from pig by-products (heart, liver and kidneys) using the pH-shifting technique. From the solubility profiles (pH 2 to 12), the protein extraction was performed at alkaline pH (10.0 to 11.5), obtaining two fractions: soluble (SC) and insoluble (IC). Higher protein content (71 to 77%) and extractability (214 to 459 mg/g) were observed in heart and liver concentrates; whereas, for water holding capacity (WHC) the highest values (4.20 to 4.54 g water/g protein) were for the heart (SC) and kidney (SC and IC) concentrates. All concentrates had high emulsion stability and higher WHC than commercial protein extenders (whey and soybean). The concentrates obtained from the soluble fraction were redder (higher a* values and lower h values) and darker (lower L* values) than insoluble fraction, especially heart and liver concentrates. Use of concentrates in sausage production slightly altered the color chroma (C*) of samples. It was concluded that the pig by-products protein concentrates had great potential of use as extenders in sausage production.

ABSTRACT In the Brazilian Cerrado biome, there are wetlands locally known as “Veredas”, which are swampy plains between hills and rivers. Since the 1970’s, the Cerrado biome has been gradually converted to livestock, crop, or forestry production. Until now, very few studies were conducted to evaluate the baseline contents of trace elements in Cerrado wetland soils. Due to their position in the landscape (bottom lands), the wetlands are potentially susceptible to contamination by runoff and/or leaching from surrounding areas at higher altitudes. This work evaluated the As, Cd, Pb, Ni, Zn, Cu, Mn, and Fe contents in soils from six wetlands (undisturbed and disturbed) in the Minas Gerais Triangle region, Brazil. In each wetland, we collected topsoil samples (0.00-0.20 m layer) and subsurface samples (0.40-0.70 m layer) at different landscape positions in the wetlands (upper, middle, and bottom positions). The soil samples were air-dried, ground, and sieved through 2-mm mesh. Afterwards, the soil digestion was performed according to the USEPA 3051A protocol, and the trace elements were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (flame or graphite furnace atomization). Water samples were also collected monthly from September 2014 to September 2015 to determine the elemental composition by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The contents of all soil trace elements studied were below the threshold values established by Brazilian guidelines. The soil trace element (cations and/or oxyanions) distributions varied according to soil depth and organic matter content. Our findings contribute to the sparse inventory of Brazilian Cerrado wetlands regarding trace-element contents.

Resumo Justificativa e objetivos: A cirurgia no grande queimado causa hemorragia de grande porte e disfunção da coagulação. Os algoritmos de tratamento guiados por ROTEM® e fator VIIa reduzem as necessidades de hemoderivados, mas falta evidência em relação ao fator XIII. A deficiência do fator XIII altera a estabilidade do coágulo e diminui a cicatrização. Este estudo avalia a eficácia e a segurança da correção do fator XIII e sua repercussão nas necessidades transfusionais na cirurgia do queimado. Métodos: Estudo retrospectivo randomizado de 40 doentes submetidos à cirurgia na Unidade de Queimados alocados em grupo A com estudo do fator XIII (n = 20) e grupo B sem estudo (n = 20). A transfusão eritrocitária foi guiada por gatilho de hemoglobina de 10 g.dL-1 e os outros hemoderivados por testes de coagulação de rotina e ROTEM®. A análise do consumo de hemoderivados incluiu unidades de eritrócitos, plasma fresco congelado, plaquetas e fibrinogênio. A análise dos biomarcadores da coagulação comparou os valores pré e pós-operatórios. Resultados e conclusões: O grupo A (com estudo de fator XIII) e o grupo B apresentaram área de superfície corporal total queimada idêntica. Todos os doentes do grupo A revelaram déficit pré-operatório de fator XIII, cuja correção reduziu significativamente a transfusão de unidades de concentrado eritrocitário (1,95 vs. 4,05, p = 0,001). Os biomarcadores de coagulação pré e pós-operatórios foram semelhantes entre os grupos, revelaram que os testes de coagulação de rotina não identificam o déficit de fator XIII. Sem eventos tromboembólicos registrados. A correção do fator XIII na cirurgia do queimado revelou-se segura e eficaz na redução da transfusão perioperatória de unidades de eritrócitos.

Abstract Background and objectives: Major burn surgery causes large hemorrhage and coagulation dysfunction. Treatment algorithms guided by ROTEM® and factor VIIa reduce the need for blood products, but there is no evidence regarding factor XIII. Factor XIII deficiency changes clot stability and decreases wound healing. This study evaluates the efficacy and safety of factor XIII correction and its repercussion on transfusion requirements in burn surgery. Methods: Randomized retrospective study with 40 patients undergoing surgery at the Burn Unit, allocated into Group A those with factor XIII assessment (n = 20), and Group B, those without assessment (n = 20). Erythrocyte transfusion was guided by a hemoglobin trigger of 10 g.dL-1 and the other blood products by routine coagulation and ROTEM® tests. Analysis of blood product consumption included units of erythrocytes, fresh frozen plasma, platelets, and fibrinogen. The coagulation biomarker analysis compared the pre- and post-operative values. Results and conclusions: Group A (with factor XIII study) and Group B had identical total body surface area burned. All patients in Group A had a preoperative factor XIII deficiency, whose correction significantly reduced units of erythrocyte concentrate transfusion (1.95 vs. 4.05, p = 0.001). Pre- and post-operative coagulation biomarkers were similar between groups, revealing that routine coagulation tests did not identify factor XIII deficiency. There were no recorded thromboembolic events. Correction of factor XIII deficiency in burn surgery proved to be safe and effective for reducing perioperative transfusion of erythrocyte units.

Abstract Objective: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) reduces body weight and the comorbidities associated with obesity. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether glucose and lipid profiles were maintained during a 5-year follow-up period after RYGB. Subjects and methods: Anthropometric and laboratory data from 323 patients who had undergone this operation were analyzed. Differences in laboratory variables between the baseline and 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 months postoperatively (PO) were assessed using a one-way ANOVA test to compare the three groups. Delta significance using one-way ANOVA was performed to assess anthropometric variable in the postoperative period (p < 0.05). Results: 77 patients (24%) were included in Group 1 (G1), 101 (32%) in Group 2 (G2), and 141 (44%) in Group 3 (G3). The majority of patients, 71.7% in G1, 82.8% in G2, and 70% in G3, showed high triglycerides (TG) before surgery. A decrease in weight loss was observed in all groups followed by an increase in body weight in G2 and G3 at 36, 48 and 60 months. Laboratory results for G1, G2 and G3 showed no significant differences between groups at baseline and during the post-operative period. Conclusion: Our results suggest that weight regain after RYGB has no significant impact on the long-term evolution of the lipid profile and glycemia.
