Abstract Lycosa is one of the most speciose genera in Lycosidae, including species with different sexual chromosome systems (SCS). We carried out cytogenetic analyses in three species of Lycosa, revealing that L. erythrognatha and L. sericovittata share 2n ♂ = 22 and SCS X1X20 while L. gr. nordenskjoldi presents 2n ♂ = 19 and SCS XO, composed only of acrocentric chromosomes. All species shared pericentromeric heterochromatin. Nonetheless, one specimen of L. sericovittata carried two chromosomes with terminal heterochromatin and L. gr. nordenskjoldi showed four chromosomes with interstitial heterochromatin plus another chromosome with terminal C-bands. The pericentromeric heterochromatin of all species as well as the terminal heterochromatic blocks in L. sericovittata were CMA3+. The 18S rDNA sites varied in number and type of bearing chromosomes both at inter and intrapopulational levels, with the highest variation in L. gr. nordenskjoldi. These differences may be related to gene dispersal due to the influence of transposition elements and translocation events. Despite these variations, all species shared ribosomal sites in pair 5. This study demonstrated intra and interspecific chromosomal variability of Lycosa, suggesting that chromosomal rearrangements are related to the diversification of diploid number and SCS in this group of spiders.

ABSTRACT This study concerns the millipede genus Leptherpum Attems, 1931, which contains nine valid species distributed across the Amazonian rainforest of northeastern South America. The type species L. carinovatum (Attems, 1898) is reexamined based on the type material and high-resolution photographs, including the first scanning electron micrographs of this species. The following three new species are described: Leptherpum tialaura sp. nov. from the state of Pará, Brazil; Leptherpum battirolai sp. nov. from the state of Amazonas, Brazil; and Leptherpum buenovillegasi sp. nov. from the commune of Maripasoula, French Guiana. A brief review of Leptherpum taxonomy and geographic distribution is provided, along with a key to males.

Abstract New records for the species Exallostreptus vanzoliniiHoffman, 1988 and Guaporeptus paradisiusHoffman, 1988, known only from the state of Rondônia, are made from the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Figures of gonopods, first and second leg-pair of males are provided. In addition, an updated list of 19 Spirostreptidae species from Mato Grosso is provided, with the species Plusioporus salvadorii, Trichogonostreptus (Oreastreptus) mattogrossensis, and Urostreptus tampiitauensis widely distributed in the state.

ABSTRACT: Spiders are part of the soil biodiversity, considered fundamental to the food chain hierarchy, directly and indirectly influencing several services in agricultural and forest ecosystems. The present study aimed to evaluate the biodiversity of soil spider families and identify which soil properties influence their presence, as well as proposing families as potential bioindicators. Native forest (NF) and reforested sites (RF) with Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze were evaluated in three regions of the state São Paulo, both in the winter and summer. Fifteen soil samples were collected from each forest to evaluate the biological (spiders and microbiological), chemical and physical soil properties, in addition to properties of the litter (dry matter and C, N and S contents). For soil spiders, two sampling methods were used: pitfall traps and soil monoliths. In total, 591 individuals were collected, and distributed in 30 families, of which 306 individuals (22 families) came from pitfall traps and 285 individuals (26 families) from monoliths. Only samples obtained by the monolith method revealed seasonal differences in the mean density and richness of spiders between NF and RF. Canonical discriminant analysis showed the separation of these forests of Araucaria. Principal Component Analysis demonstrated the correlation of a number of spider families with certain soil properties (organic carbon, basal respiration, metabolic quotient, litter carbon, total porosity, bulk density and soil moisture). We identified 10 families (Anapidae, Corinnidae, Dipluridae, Hahniidae, Linyphiidae, Lycosidae, Nemesiidae, Palpimanidae, Salticidae, Scytodidae) that contributed most to separating native forest from the replanted forest, indicating the possibility of the spiders being used as bioindicators.

Abstract The present study provides historical and new records of the introduced millipedes species in Brazil, Oxidus gracilis (C.L. Koch, 1847), Orthomorpha coarctata (Saussure, 1860) (Paradoxosomatidae), Prosopodesmus jacobsoni Silvestri, 1910 (Haplodesmidae), Trachyjulus calvus (Pocock, 1893a), Glyphiulus granulatus (Gervais, 1847) (Cambalopsidae), Trigoniulus corallinus (Gervais, 1842), Leptogoniulus sorornus (Butler, 1876), Epitrigoniulus cruentatus (Brölemann, 1903) (Pachybolidae), Paraspirobolus lucifugus (Gervais, 1837) (Spirobolellidae), Cylindroiulus britannicus (Verhoeff, 1891), Cylindroiulus truncorum (Silvestri, 1896) (Julidae), and Rhinotus purpureus (Pocock, 1894) (Siphonotidae). Among the 27 federative units in Brazil, 21 states present at least one record of a non-native species. Orthomorpha coarctata was the most widely distributed species, occurring in 15 states. Glyphiulus granulatus (state of Rio Grande do Sul), C. truncorum (São Paulo), and R. purpureus (Amazonas) were recorded from only one Brazilian state. The Southeast region concentrates most of the compiled records (42,6%) and richness by grid (5-7 species), mainly in urban areas of the states of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

Abstract A checklist of the family Chelodesmidae Cook, 1895 (order Polydesmida) from state of São Paulo, Brazil has been performed based on literature and examined material from the collection of the Instituto Butantan, São Paulo (IBSP). A total of 15 genera (7 tribes and 5 genera considered incertae sedis) with 64 species are listed. Among these species, 30 presented a single one record in the state, 19 with more than one record and four recorded for the first time for the state of São Paulo, and 11 species occurring in other Brazilian states. The most distributed species is Brasilodesmus paulistus paulistus (Brölemann, 1902) with 52 records of occurrence. In addition, a complete bibliography list of the chelodesmidan fauna from the state is compiled, as well as distribution maps for all species are provided.

ResumenLos Pseudoescorpiones comprenden un diversificado grupo de arácnidos con aproximadamente 3 500 especies que se han encontrado en varios hábitats como suelo, hojarasca, cuevas y copas de árboles. Este estudio tiene como objetivo evaluar la relación entre la comunidad de Pseudoscorpiones presentes en el suelo, nidos de termitas (termiteros), troncos y copas de árboles, así como también la distribución temporal de la abundancia y riqueza de especies en estos hábitats. Para esto, se usaron diferentes técnicas de muestreo en hábitats de un Bosque Monodominante Estacionalmente Inundado en la región norte del Pantanal, Estado Mato Grosso, Brasil. Datos referentes a abundancia y riqueza de especies del ensamble fueron ordenados por Escalamiento Multidimensional No Métrico (NMDS). Fueron capturados 2 068 Pseudoscorpiones distribuidos en siete familias y 18 especies. Chernetidae (8 spp.) y Withiidae (5 spp.) predominaron. Mientras Atemnidae, Cheiridiidae, Geogarypidae, Lechytiidae y Olpiidae fueron registradas con una especie en cada una. La fauna terrícola fue más abundante (1 035 ind.; 50.0 % de la captura total), con tres familias y 10 especies. Para la fauna arborícola (712 ind.; 34.4 %), cuatro familias y 13 especies fueron registradas. Los termiteros (321 ind.; 15.6 %) representaron el hábitat con menor número de individuos; sin embargo, fueron identificadas cinco familias y nueve especies, incluyendo Parachernes sp. 2, Geogarypus sp. y Olpiolum sp., que no se encuentra en otros hábitats analizados en este bosque. Los análisis estadísticos no evidenciaron variación temporal en la distribución de abundancia y riqueza de Pseudoscorpiones en cada hábitat evaluado; no obstante, demostraron que el ambiente edáfico (suelo y termiteros), troncos y copas de árboles son distintos en relación a la composición de la comunidad. La presencia de especies típicamente terrícolas (e.g. Parawithius sp., Withiidae gen. sp. y Parachernes sp.) y otras arborícolas (e.g. Cheiridium sp., Americhernes sp. y Lustrochernes sp.) evidencian una estratificación vertical de la comunidad de Pseudoscorpiones presente en Bosques Inundables del Pantanal brasileño.

AbstractPseudoscorpions embrace a diverse group of arachnids with approximately 3 500 species that occur in various habitats, such as soil, leaf litter, caves and canopies. This study aimed at evaluating the relationship between the pseudoscorpion assemblages in soil, termite nests, tree trunks and canopies, as well as the temporal distribution as to the abundance and richness of species in these habitats. For this purpose different sampling techniques were applied in an integrated manner in distinct habitats of a seasonally flooded monodominant forest in the Northern Pantanal of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Data regarding the abundance and richness of assemblage species were organized by means of the Non-Metric Multidimensional Scaling (NMDS). A total of 2 068 Pseudoscorpiones distributed in seven families and 18 species were captured. Chernetidae (8 spp.) and Withiidae (5 spp.) predominated, while Atemnidae, Cheiridiidae, Geogarypidae, Lechytiidae and Olpiidae were present with only one species each. Terrestrial fauna was more abundant (1 035 ind.; 50.0 % of the total catch) with three families and 10 species. In the arboreal fauna (712 ind.; 34.4 %), four families and 13 species were found. Termite mounds (321 ind.; 15.6 %) corresponded to the habitat with the least number of individuals, however, five families and nine species were identified, including Parachernes sp. 2, Geogarypus sp. and Olpiolum sp., not found in other analyzed habitats in this forest. The analyses did not show any temporal variation as to abundance or richness of Pseudoscorpiones in each evaluated habitat; however, the analysis showed that the edaphic environment (soil + termite nests), tree trunks and tree canopies are distinct habitats in relation to the composition of the assemblage. The occurrence of typical terricolous (e.g. Parawithius sp., Withiidae gen. sp. and Parachernes sp.) and other arboricolous (e.g. Cheiridium sp., Americhernes sp. and Lustrochernes sp.) species highlights the vertical stratification of the assemblage present in this floodplain forest in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso.

Dentro de los agroecosistemas, las arañas constituyen un grupo de depredadores muy abundante. En olivares de Europa las arañas son importantes depredadores y pueden reducir significativamente el ataque de plagas. En Brasil son escasos los trabajos que estudian las especies de arañas en los agroecosistemas. Debido a ello, el presente trabajo se orientó a caracterizar las especies de arañas en olivos de Rio Grande del Sur. El estudio fue realizado entre octubre de 2010 y Octubre de 2012, en cinco olivares de los municipios de Pelotas, Bagé, Rio Grande, Cachoeira del Sur y Santana do Livramento. En cada área experimental se realizó un muestreo de la araneofauna a través de colectas mensuales realizadas con paraguas entomológicos en la copa de los árboles. Se realizaron dos colectas por árbol, tanto en la cara sombreada como en la soleada. Cada muestra se tomó durante 10 segundos lo que resultó en un tiempo total de 400 segundos en las 20 plantas muestreadas por olivar. Se realizó el análisis faunístico de los resultados, determinando la dominancia, abundancia, frecuencia y constancia de las especies encontradas. Se observó una riqueza de 38 especies de arañas distribuidas en 10 familias. Las especies predominantes fueron Sphecozone sp.1 e sp.2, Anelosimus studiosus, Eustala sp.1, Cheiracanthium inclusum, Misumenops sp.1, Sanogasta sp.2 y morfoespecie sp.1 (Salticidae).

Spiders represent an abundant group of predators within the agroecosystems, and in olive groves of Europe spiders are important predators and may significantly reduce the attack of pests. In Brazil there are only few investigations that study the assembly of spiders in agroecosystems. This research aimed to characterize the assembly of spiders in olive groves in Rio Grande do Sul. The study was conducted from October 2010 to October 2012, in five groves of the Municipalities of Pelotas, Bagé, Rio Grande, Cachoeira do Sul and Santana do Livramento. Spiders were monthly collected from the tree canopy by beating tree branches using a modified japanese umbrella device. Two samples per tree were taken (one on the shaded face and another on the sunny face). Each sample took 10 seconds, so 400 seconds were spent in 20 plants of each olive grove. The faunal analysis of the results was performed by determining dominance, abundance, frequency and constancy of species. It was obtained a wealth of 38 species of spiders distributed in 10 families. The predominant species were Sphecozone sp.1 and sp.2, Anelosimus studiosus, Eustala sp.1, Cheiracanthium inclusum, Misumenops sp.1, Sanogasta sp.2, and morphospecies sp.1 (Salticidae).

ABSTRACT Gelanor Thorell, 1969 comprises 11 Neotropical species. In this paper, two new species are described from Brazil: Gelanor hoga sp. nov., based on males and females from the state of Amazonas, and Gelanor cachimbo sp. nov., based on males from the state of Pará. Additionally, new records from Brazil are provided for Gelanor altithorax Keyserling, 1893, Gelanor consequus O. P.-Cambridge, 1902, Gelanor juruti Benavides & Hormiga, 2016, Gelanor latus (Keyserling, 1881), Gelanor waorani Benavides & Hormiga, 2016 and Gelanor zonatus (C.L. Koch, 1845) and a key to the Brazilian species and illustrations are provided.

Dubiaranea argenteovittata Mello-Leitão, 1943 was described from the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, based on a female. We describe and illustrate the male of the species for the first time, and provide the first records for the states of Santa Catarina and Paraná. The redescription and illustrations of the female is based on the holotype and new material from the type locality. New distributional records are also provided for the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Linyphiidae is currently the second richest family of spiders in the order Araneae but is poorly known and studied in Brazil, particularly in the northern states. In this contribution we describe a new species of Exechopsis Millidge, 1991 from the State of Amazonas, based on both males and females. The male of Meionetaadami Millidge, 1991 is described for the first time. Mermessus conjunctus (Millidge, 1991), Novafrontina uncata (F. O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1902), Sphecozone fastibilis (Keyserling, 1886), Sphecozone ignigena (Keyserling, 1886) and Vesicapalpus simplex Millidge, 1991 are recorded for the first time from Amazonas. Sphecozone crassa (Millidge, 1991) are presented additional record from Amazonas.

Neste trabalho são descritas sete espécies novas de Latonigena Simon, 1893, incluindo as primeiras descrições de machos deste gênero. Latonigena beni sp. nov. é descrita da Bolívia e Brasil e seis espécies são descritas exclusivamente do Brasil: L. colombo sp. nov. do Paraná; L. lami sp. nov. do Paraná e Rio Grande do Sul; L. santana sp. nov., L. sapiranga sp. nov. e L. taim sp. nov. do Rio Grande do Sul; L. turvo sp. nov. do Tocantins, Santa Catarina e Rio Grande do Sul. Latonigena africana Tucker, 1923 é transferida para Trichothyse Tucker, 1923 com base em caracteres morfológicos.

In this paper seven new species of Latonigena Simon, 1893 are described, including the first descriptions of males of this genus. Latonigena beni sp. nov. is described from Bolivia and Brazil and six species are described exclusively from Brazil: L. colombo sp. nov. from Paraná; L. lami sp. nov. from Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul; L. santana sp. nov., L. sapiranga sp. nov. and L. taim sp. nov. from Rio Grande do Sul; L. turvo sp. nov. from Tocantins, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. Latonigena africana Tucker, 1923 is transferred to Trichothyse Tucker, 1923 with basis on the morphological characters.

Neste trabalho são apresentadas informações oriundas de um banco de dados das aranhas descritas e registradas para a região neotropical entre 1757 e 2008. O enfoque será na diversidade do grupo no Estado de São Paulo, comparado com outros estados brasileiros. Os resultados são oriundos de mais de 25.000 registros publicados em artigos científicos na Região Neotropical. Estes dados permitem avaliar a distribuição atual do grupo, identificar lacunas de coleta, definir biomas prioritários para estudo e até delimitar áreas de endemismo para o Brasil no futuro. O Estado de São Paulo apresenta 875 espécies descritas, distribuídas em 50 famílias. A região neotropical possui 11.280 espécies (quase 1/3 das espécies propostas para o mundo). O Brasil é o país neotropical com maior diversidade (3.203 spp.), seguido do México (1.951 spp.) e Panamá (1.325 spp.). Na América do Sul temos atualmente mais de 7.500 espécies de aranhas e o Brasil apresenta a maior diversidade (3.203 espécies registradas em 72 famílias), seguido da Argentina (1.316 spp.) e Peru (1.066 spp.).

In this study we present a database of spiders described and registered from the Neotropical region between 1757 and 2008. Results are focused on the diversity of the group in the State of São Paulo, compared to other Brazilian states. Data was compiled from over 25,000 records, published in scientific papers dealing with Neotropical fauna. These records enabled the evaluation of the current distribution of the species, the definition of collection gaps and priority biomes, and even future areas of endemism for Brazil. A total of 875 species, distributed in 50 families, have been described from the State of São Paulo. A total of 11,280 species have been recorded from the Neotropical region (almost 1/3 of the species described worldwide). Brazil is the Neotropical country with the highest diversity (3,203 spp.), followed by Mexico (1,951 spp.) and Panama (1,325 spp.). Seven thousand five hundred species were recorded from South America and Brazil holds the highest diversity (3,203 spp., in 72 families), followed by Argentina (1,316 spp.), and Peru (1,066 spp.).

Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a composição da comunidade edáfica de Araneae de uma floresta sazonalmente inundável na região norte do Pantanal de Mato Grosso, tendo como base sua densidade de atividade e emergência. Foram empregadas armadilhas de solo tipo pitfall-trap para avaliação da atividade sobre o solo, e fotoecletores de solo para verificar a densidade de emergência ao longo de todos os períodos sazonais desta região, entre janeiro de 2004 e janeiro de 2005. Como resultado obteve-se um total de 2.233 aranhas, 1.314 indivíduos obtidos com armadilhas pitfall (29 famílias e 35 gêneros) e 919 com fotoecletores de solo (27 famílias e 22 gêneros). Oonopidae (335 ind.: 15,0%), Corinnidae (310 ind.; 13,9%), Gnaphosidae (289 ind.; 12,9%) e Ctenidae (248 ind.; 11,1%) corresponderam às principais representantes desta comunidade, bem como àquelas com maior densidade de atividade sobre a superfície do solo, enquanto Salticidae (177 ind.; 19,3%), Oonopidae (126 ind.; 13,7%) e Gnaphosidae (114 ind.; 12,4%) foram aquelas com maior densidade de emergência. Doze agrupamentos de guildas comportamentais foram identificados, sete representaram aranhas caçadoras e cinco tecelãs. As análises referentes à variação temporal da atividade e emergência desta comunidade evidenciaram que a influência de fatores abióticos como a pluviosidade e a inundação da floresta são determinantes para sua estruturação, influenciando a ocorrência de táxons como Salticidae, Corinnidae e Oonopidae.

This study aimed to evaluate the community composition of ground dwelling Araneae in a seasonally flooded forest in the Northern region of Pantanal of Mato Grosso, based on its density and emergency activity. Pitfall traps were used to estimate the ground activity and ground photoeclectors to verify the density of emergency throughout the seasonal periods between January 2004 and January 2005. A total of 2,233 spiders were collected, 1,314 with pitfall traps (29 families and 35 genera) and 919 with ground photoeclectors (27 families and 22 genera). Oonopidae (335 ind.: 15,0%), Corinnidae (310 ind.; 13,9%), Gnaphosidae (289 ind.; 12,9%) and Ctenidae (248 ind.; 11,1%) were the main representatives of the community, as well as those with higher density of activity on the soil surface, while Salticidae (177 ind.; 19,3%), Oonopidae (126 ind.; 13,7%) and Gnaphosidae (114 ind.; 12,4%) were those with higher density of emergency. Twelve groups of behavioral guilds were identified, seven were hunting spiders and five were weavers. The analyses concerning temporal variation of the activity and emergence of this community demonstrate that the influence of abiotic factors, such as rainfall and flooding of the forest, are determinant to its structure, influencing the occurrence of groups as Salticidae, Corinnidae and Oonopidae.

The Brazilian Savanna Ecoregion (Cerrado) is one of the richest biomes in the world, with a characteristic highly seasonal climate a dry season between May and September and a rainy season from October through April. Ground-dwelling spiders from three Cerrado phytophysiognomies, "campo cerrado", "cerrado" and "cerradão", were sampled using pitfall traps during two years, totaling 111 species and 3,529 individuals. The abundance of individuals and species richness was higher during the wet season. Fifty-eight species were captured exclusively during that period, whereas only nineteen were restricted to the dry season. Only two species were found in all samples. The number of juveniles was higher than the number of adults in all phytophysiognomies and in all species during both seasons. The highest abundance was registered in October and the lowest in April. Overall sex ratio was male-biased in all vegetation types sampled. Distinct climate variables affected the abundance of spiders depending on sex, age and vegetal physiognomy where they were sampled. This study involved the longest sampling of spider abundance and diversity on the ground of a Brazilian Savanna.
