Abstract Trichonephila clavipes is recorded for the first time in the department of Francisco Morazán, from a female specimen collected on the campus of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras (CU-UNAH), in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. We also present additional records of males and females collected in the city of La Ceiba (department of Atlántida) and on the island of Útila (department of Islas de la Bahía). To complement the distribution, we included in a map 200 records obtained from the citizen science platform iNaturalist.

Resumen Trichonephila clavipes se registra por primera vez en el departamento de Francisco Morazán, a partir de un ejemplar hembra recolectado en el campus de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras (CU-UNAH), en Tegucigalpa, Honduras. También presentamos registros adicionales de machos y hembras recolectados en la ciudad de La Ceiba (departamento de Atlántida), y en la isla de Útila (departamento de Islas de la Bahía). ABSTRACT Despite their large size and intimidating appearance, most mygalomorph spiders do not cause severe envenomation in Brazil. “Programa Estadual de Vigilância de Acidentes por Animais Peçonhentos da Secretaria de Estado da Saúde do Paraná”, through the “Sistema de Notificação de Animais Peçonhentos” (SINAP), documents the occurrence of synanthropic species captured by the public and reported to municipal health services. In this study, we present a list of the mygalomorph species received by Secretaria de Saúde do Estado do Paraná (SESA) and their distribution across the state of Paraná, based on the SINAP reports. A total of 575 mygalomorph specimens were identified, originating from all 22 Regional Health Centers (RS) of SESA-PR. We identified species of four families: Actinopodidae (on species: Actinopus itapitocai); Dipluridae (1 species: Diplura catharinensis; Pycnothelidae (two species: Psalistopoides emanueli, and P. fulvimanus); and Theraphosidae (10 species in four genera: Acanthoscurria paulensis, Eupalaestrus campestratus, Grammostola actaeon, Pterinopelma longisternale, Tekoapora wacketi, Vitalius dubius, V. lucasae, V. paranaensis, V. sorocabae and V. vellutinus). Of the aforementioned species, Vitalius paranaensis has the widest distribution, occurring in all Regional Centers of Health except Paranaguá. The other most frequently collected species were Pterinopelma longisternale, Vitalius sorocabae, and Psalistopoides emanueli. In total, the 575 records resulted in only 12 accidents. Abstract The Atlantic Forest is known for its richness and diversity of species. Nonetheless, the diversity of millipedes in the biome is still poorly known. In this work, the distribution and the faunal composition of millipedes of the family Spirostreptidae Brandt, 1833 (order Spirostreptida) from the Atlantic Forest are provided. A total of 159 occurrence points were compiled, and 59 species in 17 genera were listed. GymnostreptusBrölemann, 1902 was recovered as the richest genus in the Atlantic Forest with 14 species and one subspecies. The species Plusioporus setiger (Brölemann, 1902) presented the highest number of records, with 22 occurrence points in at least 20 municipalities. A total of 35 species were recorded from only one municipality. Considering all the threats on the biome, this paper is important for our understanding of the Brazilian millipede fauna and can be useful to determine places that require valuations for collecting efforts and conservation policies. ABSTRACT Salticidae is the most diverse family of Araneae and in Brazil, there are 667 species. Among these species, five are synanthropic exotics: Plexippus paykulli (Audouin, 1826), Hasarius adansoni (Audouin, 1826), Menemerus bivittatus (Dufour, 1831), M. nigli Wesołowska & Freudenschuss, 2012 and Thyene coccineovittata (Simon, 1886). To understand the current distribution of these species in Brazil, seven collections of 643 lots were examined from seven Brazilian zoological collections. The synanthropic exotic species with the highest records were Plexippus paykulli, Menemerus bivittatus, and Hasarius adansoni, generally collected and associated with human dwellings and buildings. They are present in all regions (North, Northeast, Midwest, and South macro-regions), with the largest region, in all regions of the country in 22 states and 98 municipalities, followed by Hasarius adansoni in 17 states and 88 municipalities, Menemerus bivittatus in 19 states and 68 municipalities. Resumo Os caracteres somáticos são compartilhados por muitos grupos de Chelodesmidae, e o posicionamento genérico e as identificações de espécies tradicionalmente têm sido baseadas na morfologia do gonópodo. Carateres genitais das fêmeas foram amplamente negligenciados e raramente são fotografados ou ilustrados. Isso é lamentável, pois a morfologia da genitália feminina apresenta características importantes e pode ser decisiva para o desenvolvimento de uma classificação mais robusta. Neste trabalho, descrevemos a até então desconhecida fêmea de Sandalodesmus araujoi (Schubart, 1946), anteriormente conhecida apenas pelo holótipo macho coletado em São Paulo, Brasil, em dezembro de 1943; discutimos a utilidade de caracteres genitais femininos para delineamento de espécies em Sandalodesmus; e relatamos o primeiro caso de ocorrência em massa para Chelodesmidae. Embora uma tentativa de diagnose formal para fêmeas de Sandalodesmus com base em caracteres genitais seja prematura, a morfologia vulvar dos três táxons examinados neste estudo, sugere que a genitália feminina é espécie-específica. Abstract Somatic characters are shared by many Chelodesmidae groups, and generic placement and species identifications traditionally have been based on gonopodal morphology. Female genitalic characters have been largely neglected and are rarely photographed or illustrated. This is rather unfortunate as the morphology of female genitalia presents important characters and may be decisive for developing a more robust family classification. We describe the heretofore unknown female of Sandalodesmus araujoi (Schubart, 1946), previously known only from the male holotype collected in São Paulo, Brazil in December 1943; discuss the utility of female genitalic characters for species delineation in Sandalodesmus; and report the first case of a mass occurrence in the Chelodesmidae. While an attempt at a formal diagnosis of Sandalodesmus females based on genitalic characters is premature, the vulvar morphology of the three taxa examined in this study suggests that female genitalia are species-specific. Some characters (i.e., asymmetric valves, presence of digitiform projections and reduction of setae on the internal basal portion of the valves) are constant between the species, suggesting utility for generic-level delineation. Mass occurrences of millipedes are typically unpredictable and likely related to variations in environmental conditions and/or anthropogenic modifications of natural habitats. Although the mass occurrence of S. araujoi reported herein was only observed once, the event coincides with the mating period of millipedes during the rainy season in Brazil. RESUMO A espécie de Diplopoda Taulidesmella tabatinga é conhecida apenas da região de fronteira entre o Brasil com Peru e Colômbia, Iquitos (Peru), e arredores de Manaus (Brasil). Com base em material coletado recentemente durante a estação chuvosa em 2014 ao longo do Rio Amazonas a montante da confluência com o Rio Negro, nós reportamos um novo registro para T. tabatinga em florestas de várzea no município de Alvarães, Amazonas, preenchendo uma lacuna de 1000 km entre seus pontos de ocorrência previamente conhecidos. Este novo registro indica que T. tabatinga provavelmente é amplamente distribuída ao longo de ambas margens do alto do Rio Amazonas, principalmente associada a troncos de árvores e serapilheira de matas ciliares e inundáveis.

ABSTRACT The millipede species Taulidesmella tabatinga is known from the border of Brazil with Peru and Colombia, Iquitos (Peru), and environs of Manaus (Brazil). Based on freshly collected material during the rainy season in 2014 along the Amazon River upriver from its confluence with the Negro River, we report a new record of T. tabatinga in floodplain forests in the municipality of Alvarães, Amazonas state (Brazil), filling a gap of 1,000 km between its previously known occurrence points. This record indicates that T. tabatinga is likely widespread along both margins of the upper Amazon River, mostly associated with tree trunks and litter of riparian and floodplain forests.

Abstract A new species of Loxosceles of the laeta species-group, L. vicentei sp. nov., found in Chile is described and illustrated. The male of this species can be distinguished from that of other species by having a long and straight embolus with a truncated tip. The female is distinguished by the spermatheca with a large base and two slender, curved receptacles in both sides.

Resumen Una nueva especie del género Loxosceles del grupo de especies laeta, L. vicentei sp. nov., encontrada en Chile es descrita e ilustrada. El macho de esta especie se puede distinguir del de otras especies por tener un émbolo largo, recto y con la punta truncada. La hembra se distingue por la espermateca con base grande y dos receptáculos delgados y curvos en ambos lados.

ABSTRACT An ocular malformation is described for the first time in the genus Loxosceles, specifically in a female of Loxosceles surca Gertsch. The specimen was collected at 3,540 m.a.s.l. in Tarapaca Region, Chile. It is the first record for this family and the first case of teratology described for spiders in this country.

RESUMEN Se describe por primera vez una malformación ocular en el género Loxosceles, específicamente en una hembra de Loxosceles surca Gertsch. El espécimen fue recolectado a una altitud de 3.540 m.s.n.m. en la Región de Tarapacá, Chile. Constituye el primer registro para esta familia y es el primer caso teratológico descrito para arañas en este país.

ABSTRACT This study concerns the diplopod genus Eucampesmella Schubart, 1955, widespread in Brazil. After this work, the genus includes 12 valid species, and three incertae sedis: E. pugiuncula (Schubart, 1946), E. brunnea Kraus, 1959 and E. schubarti Kraus, 1957. The type-species, Eucampesmella tricuspis (Attems, 1931), is redescribed based on the holotype, and the following six new Brazilian species are added: Eucampesmella macunaima sp. nov. from the states of Rondônia, Pará, and Piauí; E. capitu sp. nov. from the states of Piauí and Paraíba; E. brascubas sp. nov. from the state of Sergipe; E. iracema sp. nov. from the state of Pernambuco; E. pedrobala sp. nov. from the state of Ceará; and E. lalla sp. nov. from the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Furthermore, E. lartiguei ferrii (Schubart, 1956) is recognized as a junior synonym of E. lartiguei lartiguei (Silvestri, 1897), which also had its status changed, and E. sulcata (Attems, 1898) is revalidated, prevailing under the name Leptodesmus tuberculiporus Attems, 1898. In addition, drawings, diagnoses, and distribution maps for all species of the genus are provided.

Resumo: O Efeito do Domínio Central (MDE) e o Efeito Rapoport (ER) são duas teorias biogeografias que fazem previsões sobre a distribuição da diversidade ao longo de gradientes. O MDE prevê maior riqueza nas porções centrais de um gradiente, se este estiver dentro de um domínio fechado. O ER prevê uma relação positiva entre altitude e tamanho da distribuição ao longo do gradiente altitudinal. Nosso objetivo foi o de registrar a distribuição de uma comunidade de aranhas ao longo de um gradiente altitudinal na Amazônia Brasileira, e testar se há uma influência do EDC e do ER sobre os padrões de diversidade da comunidade. Nosso estudo foi feito no Parque Nacional do Pico da Neblina (AM, Brasil), e nós amostramos aranhas em seis altitudes diferentes. Nós coletamos 3.140 exemplares adultos de 39 famílias, que foram divididos em 529 espécies/morfoespécies. A riqueza declinou com o aumento de altitude, mas o padrão não mostrou ajuste com as previsões feitas pelo EDC. O tamanho da distribuição altitudinal também não esteve relacionado ao previsto pelo ER. Por fim, a distribuição de abundância ao longo da distribuição altitudinal das espécies variou de maneira específica, o que impediu a ocorrência de um ER nos padrões da comunidade. A influência do EDC sobre os padrões observados foi baixíssima, uma consequência de características de nossa comunidade, já que esta é formada por espécies com pequena distribuição altitudinal. Espécies de distribuição altitudinal médias e grandes ocorreram em todas as partes do gradiente o que impediu a ocorrência de um ER. Por fim, o ER também não foi observado na distribuição de abundância das espécies ao longo do gradiente, já que essa variou de maneira específica.

Abstract: The Mid-Domain Effect (MDE) and the Rapoport (RE) effect are two biogeographical theories that make predictions about biogeogaphic patterns. MDE predicts higher richness in the central portions of a gradient if it is within a bounded domain. RE predicts a positive relation between altitude and species range size along an altitudinal gradient. Our aim was to document the distribution of spider species richness along an altitudinal gradient in the Brazilian Amazon, and to test the influence of MDE and RE on the diversity patterns. Our study was conducted at the Pico da Neblina (Amazonas state, Brazil), and we sampled spiders at six different altitudes using two methods: nocturnal hand sampling and a beating tray. We obtained 3,140 adult spiders from 39 families, sorted to 529 species/morphospecies. Richness declined continuously with an altitude increase, but the fit with the MDE richness estimates was very weak and was not significant. Range size was not related to altitude, i. e., no RE. Finally, the abundance distribution within each species range varied more specifically, which prevented the occurrence of a RE at the community level. The influence of MDE was extremely low, a consequence of our community characteristics, formed mostly by small range size species. Short and medium range species were located at all altitudes, preventing a significant relation between range size and altitude. The distribution of abundance within a species range varied specifically and do not support a RE hypothesis.

ABSTRACT The taxonomic history of Bumba Pérez-Miles, Bonaldo & Miglio, 2014 is mainly based on the inclusion of the new species. Bumba have been characterized by the type IV urticating setae present, retrolateral process on male palpal tibia, palpal bulb resting in a ventral distal excavation of palpal tibia, metatarsus I passes between the two branches of tibial apophysis when flexed, presence of spiniform setae on prolateral and retrolateral sides of maxillae and coxae I-IV. In this paper we include the row of teeth (denticulate row) in the median region of the inferior prolateral keel in all male palps. This structure range from a residual tooth to a ridge of up to five teeth. Both, the denticulate row and the retrolateral process on male palpal tibia in males could be considered as putative synapomorphies for Bumba. Here, Homoeomma humile Vellard, 1924 is transferred to Bumba and redescribed, while the female is described for the first time. Bumba cabocla (Pérez-Miles, 2000) is synonymyzed with B. horrida (Schmidt, 1994). Bumba pulcherrimaklaasi (Schmidt, 1991) is transferred to Cyclosternum Ausserer, 1871. Four new species are described and illustrated: Bumba tapajos sp. nov. from state of Pará, Bumba cuiaba sp. nov. and Bumba rondonia sp. nov., both from states of Rondônia and Mato Grosso, respectively, and Bumba mineiros sp. nov. from Paraguay and the Brazilian states of Goiás, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. Diagnosis of B. horrida and B. lennoni are extended and figures of this species are presented.

Resumo: Fragmentos florestais em áreas urbanas compreendem importantes habitats para uma grande variedade de espécies, entretanto, políticas conservacionistas ainda são incipientes para sua manutenção e conservação. Assim, avaliou-se a riqueza e abundância da assembleia de aranhas de solo em cinco fragmentos florestais, com áreas variando entre 18,5 e 103,98 ha, no perímetro urbano de Sinop, norte de Mato Grosso, sul da Amazônia. As amostragens foram efetuadas com Extrator mini-Winkler e armadilhas pitfall nos períodos de seca (julho) e chuva (novembro) de 2017. Os fragmentos foram caracterizados em relação à área e ao Índice de Integridade Biótica (IBI) para avaliar o efeito dessas variáveis sobre a riqueza e abundância da assembleia de aranhas de solo. Um total de 653 aranhas foi amostrado, compreendendo 25 famílias e 52 espécies. Salticidae, Theridiidae, Lycosidae, Linyphiidae, Oonopidae e Symphytognathidae corresponderam às famílias mais abundantes (63,3% do total). Aranhas caçadoras (393 ind.; 60,2%) predominaram em relação às tecelãs (260 ind.; 39,8%). A maior abundância e riqueza de espécies de aranhas foram obtidas durante o período de chuva (517 ind.; 79,2%; 41 spp.) em relação ao período de seca (136 ind.; 20,8%; 24 spp.). Duas espécies foram registradas pela primeira vez na região Amazônica, Anapistula aquytabueraRheims & Brescovit, 2003 (Symphytognathidae) and Opopaea concolor (Blackwall, 1859) (Oonopidae). A riqueza de espécies não foi afetada pelo IBI nem pela área dos fragmentos. Embora o modelo estatístico não seja significativo, observa-se que a riqueza de espécies aumenta ligeiramente com o aumento do IBI e da área dos fragmentos. Da mesma forma, a abundância das aranhas não foi afetada pelo IBI e nem pela área do fragmento. Todos os fragmentos florestais avaliados, independente do tamanho da área, apresentaram um baixo ou regular IBI, evidenciando que estes habitats têm sofrido com as pressões inerentes do perímetro urbano incluindo a constante expansão da ocupação humana, bem como o mau uso por parte da população. Entretanto, estes mesmos fragmentos, evidenciaram considerável riqueza de espécies de aranhas de solo, podendo ser categorizados como importantes habitats para a manutenção da biodiversidade regional e, portanto, sendo necessária a definição de estratégias de ação que garantam sua conservação.

Abstract: Forest fragments in urban areas comprise important habitats for a wide variety of species, however, conservationist policies for their maintenance and conservation are still incipient. This study examined the richness and abundance of the ground-spider assemblage in five forest fragments, with areas ranging between 18.5 and 103.98 ha, in the urban perimeter of Sinop, northern Mato Grosso State, southern Amazon region of Brazil. Sampling was carried out using the mini-Winkler extractor and pitfall traps in the dry (July) and rainy (November) seasons of 2017. All fragments were characterized in relation to the area and the Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI), to assess the effect of these variables on richness and abundance of soil spider assemblage. A total of 653 spiders were sampled, corresponding to 25 families and 52 species. Salticidae, Theridiidae, Lycosidae, Linyphiidae, Oonopidae and Symphytognathidae were the most abundant families (63.3% of the total sample). The assemblage was characterized by the dominance of hunting spiders (393 ind.; 60.2%) over web-building spiders (260 ind.; 39.8%). Greater spider abundance and richness was obtained during the rainy season (517 ind.; 79.2%; 41 spp.) as compared with the dry season (136 ind.; 20.8%; 24 spp.). Only 13 species occurred in dry and rainy season. Two species were recorded for the first time in the Amazon region, namely, Anapistula aquytabueraRheims & Brescovit, 2003 (Symphytognathidae) and Opopaea concolor (Blackwall, 1859) (Oonopidae). Species richness was not affected by IBI and area of fragment. Although the statistical model is not significant, species richness increases slightly with IBI and area of fragment. Similarly, abundance of spiders was not affected by IBI and area of fragment. Regardless of the area size, all evaluated forest fragments showed a low and regular IBI, demonstrating that these habitats have suffered with the pressures inherent from the urban perimeter, including the constant expansion of human occupation as well as misuse by the population. Nonetheless, these same fragments revealed considerable richness of species of ground spiders and can thus be categorized as important habitats for the maintenance of regional biodiversity. Therefore, action strategies must be set out to ensure their conservation.

Biological invasions are a major threat that affects negatively to biodiversity. Several hypotheses have been generated to explain why some species can naturalize in invaded areas. The hypothesis of biotic resistance is one of the best known, wich describe the ability of native communities to repel invaders; however it has been poorly studied in urban environments. Urban habitats are currently the most common ecosystem on the planet but have been poor studied. In this study, we do not found effect of communities on exotic species, but a negative and significant effect of climate was found. In conclusion, we can point out that is the abiotic resistance that is conditioning the naturalization of exotic species in urban environments, while the role of the biotic competition to repel the invasion is not important, rejecting the hypothesis of biotic resistance.

Las invasiones biológicas son una de las mayores amenazas para la biodiversidad. Muchas hipótesis se han generado para explicar porque algunas especies pueden naturalizarse en áreas invadidas. Una de las mejores conocidas es la hipótesis de resistencia biótica, la cual describe la capacidad de las comunidades para repeler a los invasores; sin embargo, ha sido pobremente estudiado en ambientes urbanos. En este estudio, no se encontró un efecto de la comunidad nativa sobre la riqueza de especies exóticas, pero si existe un efecto negativo relacionado con el clima. En conclusión, se puede señalar que es la resistencia abiótica la que está condicionando la naturalización de las especies exóticas en ambientes urbanos, mientras que las interacciones biológicas no son importantes, rechazándose la hipótesis de resistencia biótica.

RESUMO Doze aranhas consideradas não-nativas da família Oonopidae são registradas em áreas urbanas no Brasil: Brignolia dasysterna Platnick, Dupérré, Ott & Kranz-Baltensperger, 2011, B. parumpunctata (Simon, 1893), Triaeris stenaspis Simon, 1892, Ischnothyreus peltifer (Simon, 1892), I. velox Jackson, 1908, Opopaea concolor (Blackwall, 1859), O. deserticola Simon, 1892, Pelicinus marmoratus Simon, 1892, Heteroonops spinimanus (Simon, 1892), Gamasomorpha parmata (Thorell, 1890) (aqui restaurada para sua combinação original em Xestaspis), Orchestina pavesiiformis Saaristo, 2007 and O. dentifera (Simon, 1893). Entre estas espécies, seis novos sinônimos foram detectados: Hytanis oblonga Simon, 1893, Xestaspis bipeltis Thorell, 1895, Gamasomorpha insularis Simon, 1907 e Opopaea lutzi Petrunkevitch, 1929 com Xestaspis parmata Thorell, 1890; Gammasomorpha humilis Mello-Leitão, 1920 com Opopaea concolor (Blackwall, 1859) e Gamasomorpha rufa Banks, 1898 with Opopaea deserticola Simon, 1891. Uma vez que Hytanis oblonga é a espécie-tipo do gênero, sua sinonímia com Xestaspis parmata implica na sinonímia de Hytanis Simon, 1893 com Xestaspis Simon, 1884. Triaeris stenaspis, uma espécie partenogenética, é o oonopídeo sinantrópico com distribuição mais ampla no Brasil, ocorrendo de norte a sul do país, principalmente em áreas urbanas. Algumas espécies relatadas aqui ocorrem no interior de cavernas naturais, uma descoberta que deve levantar preocupações em relação à conservação das espécies nativas de cavernas.

ABSTRACT Twelve non-native species of the spider family Oonopidae are recorded in Brazil: Brignolia dasysterna Platnick, Dupérré, Ott & Kranz-Baltensperger, 2011, B. parumpunctata (Simon, 1893), Triaeris stenaspis Simon, 1892, Ischnothyreus peltifer (Simon, 1892), I. velox Jackson, 1908, Opopaea concolor (Blackwall, 1859), O. deserticola Simon, 1892, Pelicinus marmoratus Simon, 1892, Heteroonops spinimanus (Simon, 1892), Gamasomorpha parmata (Thorell, 1890) (herein restored to its original combination in Xestaspis), Orchestina pavesiiformis Saaristo, 2007 and O. dentifera (Simon, 1893). Among these species, six new synonyms were detected: Hytanis oblonga Simon, 1893, Xestaspis bipeltis Thorell, 1895, Gamasomorpha insularis Simon, 1907 and Opopaea lutzi Petrunkevitch, 1929 with Xestaspis parmata Thorell, 1890; Gammasomorpha humilis Mello-Leitão, 1920 with Opopaea concolor (Blackwall, 1859) and Gamasomorpha rufa Banks, 1898 with Opopaea deserticola Simon, 1891. Since Hytanis oblonga is the type species of the genus, its synonymy with Xestaspis parmata imply in the synonymy of Hytanis Simon, 1893 with Xestaspis Simon, 1884. The partenogenetic species T. stenaspis is the most distributed synanthropic oonopid in Brazil, occurring all over the country, mainly in urban areas. Some species are reported here to occur in the interior of natural caves, a finding that should raise conservation concerns.
