This article analyzes the relationship between strategies of standardization and adaptation of the marketing mix and performance in an international context. We carried out a meta-analysis on a sample of 23 studies published between 1992 and 2010. The sample was analyzed based on measures of the effect size (ES) - or the strength of the relation (Wolf, 1986) - between standardization/adaptation and performance. The results suggest the existence of a medium strength (ES ranging from .133 to .209) for the relationship considered. The results support the existence of a positive impact of both marketing mix adaptation and standardization on performance. However, our results suggest that companies should slightly emphasize the marketing mix adaptation (ES mean = .168) instead of standardizing it (ES mean = .134) when entering in a new international market. Results also indicate that, among the adaptation choices, price (ES = .209) should be the first element of the marketing mix to be adapted, followed by promotion (ES = .155), product (ES = .154), and distribution (ES = .141). Finally, we suggest some new research paths, such as the use of quantitative methods to compare degrees of adaptation to be applied to different segments, regions, and sectors, among other suggestions.

O objetivo deste artigo é analisar criticamente as representações sobre a infância desenvolvidas nas ações de marketing de uma empresa de vestuário infantil, avaliando se estas podem contribuir para a "adultização" do consumidor infantil. O objeto de estudo foram as duas últimas campanhas de comunicação (outono/inverno 2008 e primavera/verão 2008/2009) da Lilica Ripilica, uma conhecida marca no Brasil no segmento infantil feminino. Utilizamos a metodologia de análise crítica de discurso (FAIRCLOUGH, 2001), em três etapas: a análise textual (uma "descrição" dos textos), a análise processual (análise conjunta dos textos e da prática discursiva) e a análise social (compreensão dos efeitos socioculturais da prática discursiva). Os resultados de tal análise demonstram que o discurso da marca procura "ensinar" às crianças padrões de beleza e de comportamentos associados ao mundo adulto, o que reforça a indissociação criança/adulto. Esse fenômeno já foi identificado em literatura acerca da Idade Média (ARIÈS, 1981). A contribuição deste trabalho se refere à observação dessa mesma indissociação, porém, a partir de outra perspectiva: a "adultização" de crianças como forma de sociabilização destas para o mercado de consumo. A pesquisa mostra que um novo modelo de adulto em miniatura parece se construir mediado pelas ações de marketing.

The main purpose of this paper is to critically analyze childhood representations that appear in a children clothes company's marketing actions, to reach an understanding of this actions' contribution to the "premature adulthood" of the child consumer. We analyze two communication campaigns (Autumn/Winter 2008 and Spring/Summer 2008/2009) of Lilica Ripilica, a well-known brand in the Brazilian children market. To do this we use the method of critical discourse analysis (FAIRCLOUGH, 2001), in three stages: textual analysis (a "discription" of the texts); processual analysis (analyzing texts and the discourse practice); and social analysis (understanding the social and cultural effects of the discourse practice). As a result, our analyzes reveal that the brand's discourse aims to "teach" children beauty standards and behaviours that are related to the adult world, something which reinforces the indissociation between child/adult. A similar reality was indentified in the Middle Age literature (ARIÈS, 1981). This paper's contribution involves the observation of this same indissociation, but in a diferent perspective: the "premature adulthood" of children as a way of socialization in the consumer market. The research shows that a new model of miniature adult seems to be constructed by the actions of marketing.

Neste artigo realizamos uma análise crítica da gênese histórica da área de marketing até sua constituição atual, com um foco principal: verificar se as necessidades e os desejos dos clientes são base consistente da formação histórica, discursiva, do marketing ou, apenas, retórica legitimadora para a atuação da área. Adotamos uma orientação filosófico-epistemológica baseada na teoria do discurso proposta por Michel Foucault, que nos permitiu constatar que a centralidade das necessidades e dos desejos dos clientes no discurso contemporâneo do marketing é resultado de uma série de transformações e disputas históricas pela hegemonia de uma determinada idéia ou ponto de vista, mas sempre ancorada em condições socioeconômicas, ambientais, favoráveis às transformações ocorridas. Em outras palavras, concluímos que as transformações discursivas, constituintes da área, foram o resultado de um processo produzido social e historicamente, tendo ocorrido muito mais como um resultado de mudanças na economia e no mundo empresarial do que como uma espécie de "vocação" natural do marketing.

In this paper we do a critical analysis of marketing field since its beginning until today aimed at analysing if customers' needs and desires are a consistent marketing base on marketing historical discourse or just a legitimating rhetoric. We have adopted an philosophical-epistemological orientation based on Michel Foucault's discourse theory that allowed us to verify the core role of needs and desires concepts on marketing is a result of a series of transformations and disputes towards hegemony of ideas or ways of seeing but always anchored on favorable socioeconomic scenario. Marketing discourse transformation happened more as a result of social and historical process than as a natural 'vocation' of the field.

Este artigo realiza uma avaliação crítica da aplicação de Modelagem em Equações Estruturais no Brasil, a partir de um estudo comparativo entre os trabalhos publicados na sub-área de marketing do ENANPAD e nas seções de marketing de três dos principais periódicos de administração do Brasil: RAE, RAUSP e RAC, de 1994 a 2003. Os resultados obtidos foram comparados às estatísticas que resumem a utilização de SEM em artigos publicados nos principais journals internacionais de marketing, tabulados e apresentados por Baumgartner e Homburg (1996). O texto se inicia por uma breve visão geral de SEM - surgimento, funções e características, etapas principais, aplicações, aspectos essenciais e alguns aspectos problemáticos da sua utilização. Após a discussão sobre os critérios utilizados para tabular os artigos, o panorama do uso de SEM no Brasil é apresentado e comparado com as estatísticas dos trabalhos publicados em âmbito internacional. O texto é encerrado com uma avaliação geral da qualidade da utilização desta abordagem no Brasil e apresentação de sugestões para futuras aplicações da modelagem de equações estruturais em marketing.

This article investigates the use of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) in the published articles on the main brazilian business administration conference (ENANPAD) marketing track and also on the marketing section of the most important brazilian business administration journals (RAE, RAUSP and RAC) in the last ten years: 1994 to 2003. In addition to the analysis of the published articles, the authors present a comparison with Baumgartner and Homburg's (1996) findings in their investigation on SEM usage, which explored the papers published at main international marketing journals. The text begins with a brief overview of SEM - its origins, functions and characteristics, main steps, some applications, its essentials and some problematic aspects of the method. Then the criteria used to analyze the papers are presented. The results are shown in detail, including a comparison with Baumgartner and Homnburg's findings. This article ends with an overall evaluation about the quality of the use of SEM in Brazil, along with some suggestions for future applications of SEM in marketing.

O presente trabalho desenvolve e testa um modelo teórico baseado em hipóteses que analisam a relação entre a confiança, o valor percebido e a lealdade de usuários de Internet Banking em situações de trocas relacionais de serviço no Brasil. Uma pesquisa em todo o País com 611 usuários de Internet Banking de um grande banco de varejo e as análises através da técnica de Modelagem em Equações Estruturais validam, de forma geral, o modelo testado. As relações testadas no modelo levam à conclusão de que a confiança tem forte impacto no valor percebido pelos clientes que, por sua vez, também têm forte impacto na lealdade desses clientes à empresa. Valor foi identificado como uma variável mediadora parcial da relação entre confiança e lealdade. São apresentadas, ainda, conclusões acerca da atuação das empresas e sugestões para pesquisas futuras.

This paper is aimed on the development and test of a theoretical model based on hypotheses that analyze end-customers' trust, perceived value and loyalty on Internet Banking services relational exchanges in Brazil. Tested model is validated using structural equation modeling based on survey results with 611 Internet Banking end-customers of a major brazilian retail bank. Tested hypotheses show that trust has a strong impact on customers' perceived value which also has a strong impact on customers' loyalty. Perceived value was identified as a partial mediator variable on the trust-loyalty relationship. Managerial and future research suggestions are also presented.
