RESUMO A popularidade dos dispositivos móveis traz novos desafios para a formação de professores. Com base na teoria da complexidade, este estudo qualitativo busca compreender melhor as dinâmicas de um grupo social, especialmente as condições para a emergência da aprendizagem em uma experiência educacional móvel. Sessenta professores em serviço no Brasil participaram de uma iniciativa de educação continuada via aplicativo WhatsApp por seis semanas. A análise das respostas aos questionários abertos e do corpus gerado pelas interações dos professores indicam que a mobilidade dos dispositivos favoreceram interações, distribuição de controle e o repertório de possibilidades. Os resultados também indicam que os professores reconhecem o potencial da tecnologia móvel para mediação de experiências de aprendizagem.

ABSTRACT The popularity of mobile devices brings on new challenges for teacher education. Based on complexity theory, this qualitative study1 seeks to better understand the dynamics of a social group, especially the conditions for the emergence of learning in a mobile educational experience. Sixty in-service teachers in Brazil participated in a six-week course via WhatsApp. The analysis of the answers to questionnaires and the corpus generated by the teachers’ interactions indicate that the devices’ mobility favored interactions, control distribution, and social repertoire of possibilities. The findings also indicate that the teachers recognize the potential of mobile technology for mediating learning experiences.

RESUMO: Apesar da adoção dos dispositivos móveis na sociedade, ainda temos a aprender sobre a percepção dos professores do potencial desses artefatos como inovação para seu desenvolvimento profissional e prática. Este estudo visa responder estas questões: que propiciamentos dos aplicativos móveis os professores percebem para seu desenvolvimento profissional e prática? O que esses propiciamentos revelam sobre os atributos em Rogers (2003), a saber: vantagem relativa, compatibilidade, complexidade, testabilidade e observabilidade? A análise das narrativas de onze professores indica que estes percebem os propiciamentos de seus dispositivos móveis para seu desenvolvimento profissional. Sobre a instrução, eles relatam que a falta de equipamentos nas escolas e a necessidade de um currículo que inclua o uso de tecnologias emergentes podem indicar um baixo grau de compatibilidade, atributo relacionado a valores do sistema social. Os propiciamentos relatados apontam a necessidade de um novo sistema de valores se quisermos adotar a aprendizagem móvel na educação formal.

ABSTRACT: Despite society’s adoption of mobile devices, we have yet to learn whether teachers perceive these artifacts as an innovation and what their potential is for teacher development and practice. This study aims to answer the following questions: what does mobile application affordances teachers perceive for their professional development and practice? What do these affordances reveal concerning Rogers (2003) innovation attributes, namely: relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability, and observability? The analysis of eleven teachers’ narratives indicates that teachers do perceive the affordances of their devices for professional development. As for instruction, these teachers report that lack of school equipment and the need for a curriculum that includes the use of emergent technologies may indicate a low degree of compatibility, an attribute concerning a social system’s values. The reported affordances indicate the need for a new value system if the adoption of mobile learning is to take place in formal education.

In this article, we discuss the concepts of agency, mindset and literacy in order to investigate, in the light of complexity theory, three groups of teachers and their blogging practices. Our aim was to check if formal teaching of digital technologies have 'disturbed' the traditional literacy behavior of our participants and changed their mindsets. We visited their blogs to check if they went on blogging after the end of the course and emailed them a questionnaire to learn about their experiences with this new literacy and to collect their opinions about blogging. We realized that just a few blogs were relatively active and that the majority of the teachers had not incorporated this new literacy into their teaching practices. Nevertheless, the results do not allow us to state that those teachers have not changed their mindsets because they might have migrated to other digital contexts.

Com base na teoria da complexidade, este trabalho apresenta resultados de pesquisa de doutoramento na área de Linguística Aplicada e discute dinâmicas complexas e padrões que emergem em comunidades de aprendizagem on-line. A análise deste estudo será pautada nas interlocuções de cinquenta alunos que interagiram em pequenos grupos, sem a intervenção direta da professora, em um curso de graduação ofertado na Faculdade de Letras da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. Por meio da análise dos dados, demonstro que das relações entre os pares em comunidades autônomas de aprendizagem on-line emergem oportunidades de construção compartilhada de conhecimento, liderança distribuída, entre outras dinâmicas. Demonstro também a natureza fractal dessas comunidades e discuto como esses resultados lançam luz à criação e ao desenvolvimento de desenhos pedagógicos de cursos para grandes grupos.

Drawing on complexity theory, this work discusses the complex dynamics and emergent patterns of on-line learning communities based on a doctoral study in the area of Applied Linguistics. The analysis will center on the interlocutions of fifty students who interacted in small groups without the teacher's direct intervention, in an undergraduate course offered by the School of Languages and Literature at the Federal University of Minas Gerais. By analyzing the data, I demonstrate that out of the interactions among the peers of autonomous on-line learning communities arise opportunities for the construction of shared meaning, distributed leadership, as well as other dynamics. I also demonstrate the fractal nature of these communities. Moreover, I discuss how these findings shed light on the creation and development of course designs for large groups.

Tendo a teoria da complexidade e a literatura sobre autonomia como suporte, apresentamos uma discussão sobre o processo de autonomia do aprendiz de língua estrangeira como um sistema complexo. Para defender nossa proposta, utilizamos como evidências empíricas, em diálogo com a discussão teórica, um corpus de 80 narrativas de aprendizagem de língua inglesa, coletadas no Brasil.

Drawing on Complexity Theory and on the literature of autonomy, the discussions herein presented will center around the language learner process of autonomy as a complex system. As empirical evidence to defend our assumptions, a corpus of 80 English language learning narratives, collected in Brazil, were examined and interwined with the theoretical discussion.
