Abstract This contribution includes the analysis of 39 pieces of the Vertebrate Paleontology Collection of the Argentinean Museum of Natural Sciences “Bernardino Rivadavia”. These specimens were acquired before 1925 from the Heidelberger Mineralien-Comptoir company, which was a firm specialized in mineral and fossil commer cialization during XIX and beginning of the XX centuries. The aim of the present work is to analyze the acquisi tion of this small collection by means of the Museum, the characterization of the specimens, its catalogue, and old labels. In this way, its scientific, patrimonial and historical value are enhanced. Even today, in the second decade of the XXI century, it plays an important educational role given that some of these specimens are displayed in the Museum´s exhibition.

Resumen En la presente contribución se da a conocer un conjunto de 39 piezas que forman parte de la Colección de Paleontología de Vertebrados del Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales “Bernardino Rivadavia”. Este con junto de piezas fue adquirido con anterioridad a 1925 de la empresa Heidelberger Mineralien-Comptoir, que entre el siglo XIX y comienzos del XX se dedicaba a la comercialización de piezas fósiles y mineralogía. La finalidad de este trabajo es la de indagar sobre la historia de la adquisición de dicha colección, las características de los mate riales que la componen, su catálogo y antiguas etiquetas. Se pretende de esta forma destacar el valor científico, histórico y patrimonial que presenta la colección. Aún hoy, en la segunda década del siglo XXI juega un rol didác tico importante dado que parte de estos materiales se exhibe en las salas del Museo.

Abstract The fossil record of freshwater fishes and anurans from the Miocene in Patagonia is relatively patchy, a large number of specimens remaining undescribed. The aim of the present contribution is to describe a fossil association of percomorphacean fishes and calyptocephalellid anurans from the early to late Miocene Collón Curá Formation, at Chubut province, Patagonia, Argentina. In spite of being represented by several specimens, both anurans and fishes show a very low taxonomic diversity. This pattern matches with other fossil sites from the Cenozoic of Patagonia, as well as with the extant Patagonian batrachofaunas and ichthyofaunas. The fossil record of frogs and fishes in Patagonia is represented by few lineages that have a large evolutionary history in the area, and occasionally can be traced up to the Late Mesozoic.

The first fossil remains of vertebrates, invertebrates, plants and palynomorphs of the Chorrillo Formation (Austral Basin), about 30km to the SW of the town of El Calafate (Province of Santa Cruz), are described. Fossils include the elasmarian (basal Iguanodontia) Isasicursor santacrucensis gen. et sp. nov., the large titanosaur Nullotitan glaciaris gen. et sp. nov., both large and small Megaraptoridae indet., and fragments of sauropod and theropod eggshells. The list of vertebrates is also composed by the Neognathae Kookne yeutensis gen. et sp. nov., two isolated caudal vertebrae of Mammalia indet., and isolated teeth of a large mosasaur. Remains of fishes, anurans, turtles, and snakes are represented by fragmentary material of low taxonomical value, with the exception of remains belonging to Calyptocephalellidae. On the other hand, a remarkable diversity of terrestrial and freshwater gastropods has been documented, as well as fossil woods and palinological assemblages. The Chorrillo Formation continues south, in the Las Chinas River valley, southern Chile, where it is called Dorotea Formation. Both units share in their lower two thirds abundant materials of titanosaurs, whose remains cease to appear in the upper third, registering only elasmarians (Chorrillo Formation) and hadrosaurs (Dorotea Formation). Above both units there are levels with remains of invertebrates and marine reptiles. It is striking that the dinosaurs of the lower two thirds of the Chorrillo and Dorotea formations are represented by large basal titanosaurs and Megaraptoridae coelurosaurs, being the Saltasaurinae and Aeolosaurinae sauropods and Abelisauridae theropods totally absent. In contrast, these taxa are dominant components in sedimentary units of central and northern Patagonia (e.g., Allen, Los Alamitos, La Colonia formations). Such differences could reflect, in part, a greater antiquity (i.e., late Campanian-early Maastrichtian) for the Chorrillo fossils, or, more probably, different environmental conditions. Thus, knowledge of the biota of the southern tip of Patagonia is expanded, particularly those temporarily close to the K-Pg boundary.

Se describen los primeros restos fósiles de vertebrados, invertebrados, plantas y palinomorfos de la Formación Chorrillo (Cuenca Austral), aflorante unos 30km al SW de la localidad de El Calafate (Provincia de Santa Cruz). Los fósiles de dinosaurios no avianos incluyen el elasmariano (Iguanodontia basal) Isasicursor santacrucensis gen. et sp. nov., el titanosaurio gigante Nullotitan glaciaris gen. et sp. nov., Megaraptoridae indet. de tamaños pequeño y grande, y fragmentos de cáscaras de huevo pertenecientes a saurópodos y terópodos. La lista de vertebrados se compone también del Neognathae Kookne yeutensis gen. et sp. nov., dos vértebras caudales aisladas de Mammalia indet., y dientes aislados de un mosasaurio de gran tamaño. Han sido colectados también restos de peces, anuros, tortugas y serpientes los cuales están representados por material fragmentario de escaso valor taxonómico, con la excepción de restos pertenecientes a Calyptocephalellidae. Por otra parte, ha sido documentada una notable diversidad de gasterópodos terrestres y dulceacuícolas, así como leños fósiles y asociaciones palinológicas. La Formación Chorrillo se continúa hacia el sur, en el valle del río Las Chinas, Chile, en donde es denominada Formación Dorotea. Ambas unidades comparten en sus dos tercios inferiores abundante material de titanosaurios, cuyos restos dejan de aparecer en el tercio superior, registrándose solo elasmarianos (Fm Chorrillo) y hadrosaurios (Fm Dorotea). Por encima de ambas unidades existen niveles con restos de invertebrados y reptiles marinos. Llama la atención que los dinosaurios de los dos tercios inferiores de las formaciones Chorrillo y Dorotea estén representados por titanosaurios basales de gran tamaño y celurosaurios Megaraptoridae, estando ausentes los Saltasaurinae, Aeolosaurinae y Abelisauridae, los cuales son componentes dominantes en las unidades sedimentarias del Maastrichtiano de la provincia de Chubut y del norte patagónico (p.ej., formaciones Allen, Los Alamitos y La Colonia, por ejemplo). Estas diferencias podrían reflejar, en parte, una mayor antigüedad (i.e., Campaniano tardío -Maastrichtiano temprano) para los fósiles de Chorrillo. Se amplía así el conocimiento de las biotas del extremo sur de Patagonia, en particular de aquellas temporalmente cercanas al límite K-Pg.

The knowledge of the species present in a natural protected area provides indispensable information to valorate it correctly and to plan its management. The private natural reserve El Morejón is located in Campana Department, Buenos Aires province, and 340 ha are protected, with natural and semi-natural environments in Pampas ecoregion. The reserve has several artificial lagoons, two water courses that go across it, grasslands, flood plains, sedges and forest relicts. The objective of this work was to compile an inventory of the biodiversity of vertebrates registered in the reserve over eight years of periodic surveys. A total of 243 vertebrate species were recorded: 61 fishes, 150 birds, 11 mammals, 10 reptiles and 11 amphibians. Representative species of the environments protected in the reserve were recorded, as well as threatened species such as the Long-winged Harrier (Circus buffoni), the capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) and the D’Orbigny’s turtle (Trachemys dorbigni). The recorded biodiversity over the years turned out to be much higher than expected and these surveys allowed us to conclude that this anthropic wetlands can host numerous communities, being areas of breeding, refuge and migratory scale of fauna. In spite of the surface, proximity to urbanizations and the industrial activities that take place in the reserve surroundings, the contribution of voluntary conservation is important for their protection, especially in ecoregions scarcely represented in the federal system of protected areas.

El conocimiento de las especies presentes en un área natural protegida brinda información indispensable para valorarla correctamente y planificar su manejo. La reserva natural privada El Morejón se encuentra localizada en el Partido de Campana, provincia de Buenos Aires y protege 340 ha de ambientes naturales y semi-naturales de la ecorregión pampeana. La reserva cuenta con varias lagunas, dos cursos de agua que la atraviesan, pastizales, llanuras de inundación, pajonales y relictos de bosques. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue confeccionar un inventario de la biodiversidad de vertebrados registrados en la reserva a lo largo de ocho años de relevamientos periódicos. Se registraron un total de 243 especies de vertebrados: 61 peces, 150 aves, 11 mamíferos, 10 reptiles y 11 anfibios. Se registraron especies representativas de los ambientes que están protegidos en la reserva y además especies amenazadas como el gavilán planeador (Circus buffoni), el carpincho (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) y la tortuga pintada (Trachemys dorbigni). La biodiversidad registrada a través de los años resultó ser muy superior a la esperada y los relevamientos nos permitieron concluir que estos humedales de origen antrópico pueden albergar numerosas comunidades, siendo áreas de cría, refugio y escala migratoria de fauna. A pesar de la superficie, cercanía a urbanizaciones y las actividades industriales que se desarrollan en el entorno de la reserva es importante el aporte de la conservación voluntaria para su protección, en especial en ecorregiones escasamente representadas en el sistema federal de áreas protegidas.

Abstract Abstract: Hypostomus commersoni Valenciennes 1836, Hypostomus cordovae (Günther 1880) and Hypostomus laplatae (Eigenmann 1907) have been little studied since their original descriptions. This study shows a comprehensive review of these species from the Lower La Plata Basin, including their taxonomic history, distribution, color patterns, morphology, and ecological and molecular phylogenetic data. Morphological and phylogenetic analyses based on D-loop sequences suggested that H. commersoni can be separated into two subclades, or subgroups. Based on these results and on the non-overlapping distribution range of the two subclades, we conclude that they represent two distinct species, thereby revalidating H. spiniger. The results also suggest that H. paranensis should be considered as species inquirenda and H. cordovae as valid species. This integrated approach provides key information for assessing the conservation status and biogeographic aspects of the genus Hypostomus in the Lower La Plata Basin.

The genus Rhamdella is included in the family Heptapteridae and comprises six species distributed in Argentina, Brazil and Bolivia. Rhamdella aymarae was originally described from the Itiyuro River, an arheic basin in the North of Salta, Argentina. According to a proposed phylogenetic based on morphological characters, R. aymarae and R. rusbyi are the sister group of remaining species of this genus. In this article, we report for the first time Rhamdella aymarae from the Pilcomayo River Basin and extend its distribution to the province of Santiago del Estero. We perform a phylogenetic reconstruction based on mitochondrial marker COI, which allowed to corroborate the taxonomic assignment of the studied specimens and showed that Rhamdella is not a monophyletic group. This contribution shows evidence that the relationships between genera of the family Heptapteridae require more detailed studies to define their classification.

El género Rhamdella está incluido en la familia Heptapteridae e integrado por seis especies distribuidas en Argentina, Brasil y Bolivia. Rhamdella aymarae fue descripta originalmente para la cuenca arreica del río Itiyuro, en el norte de Salta, Argentina. Según una propuesta filogenética basada en caracteres morfológicos R. aymarae y R. rusbyi son el grupo hermano de las especies restantes de este género. En este artículo citamos por primera vez la presencia de Rhamdella aymarae para la cuenca del río Pilcomayo y extendemos su distribución a la provincia de Santiago del Estero. Realizamos también una reconstrucción filogenética basada en el marcador mitocondrial COI, la cual permitió corroborar la asignación taxonómica de los ejemplares estudiados y demostró que el género Rhamdella no es un grupo monofilético. Esta contribución muestra evidencia de que las relaciones entre los géneros de la familia Heptapteridae requieren de estudios más detallados para definir su clasificación.

Abstract The humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is distributed among most oceans and seas of the globe (except Mediterranean Sea). These whales migrate from feeding regions in the Antarctic waters to breeding areas in tropical and subtropical seas. Here we report the stranding of a female young humpback whale, which was founded dead in the vicinity of the Talavera Island, in the Paraná River Delta, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. From the analysis of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene sequences, two novel haplotypes were found, totalizing four haplotypes described for the species. In the La Plata River Basin this species was found only twice at the end of the XIX century. Thus, the new finding constitutes an important addition to the list of cetaceans that occurs in Uruguay, Paraná and La Plata Rivers.

Glanidium ribeiroi was described from the Iguazú River basin in Paraná State, Brazil. In Argentina, the species was reported for the Urugua-í stream and the Iguazú River basins in the Misiones province, and some tributaries of the middle Paraná River basin, such as Cuña Pirú in Misiones and the Salado River at Santa Fe province. After a critical review of all the Argentinian records of Glanidium ribeiroi we concluded that the specimens reported from Cuñá Pirú should be referred to Tatia neivai (Ihering, 1930) and the record of G. ribeiroi from Santa Fe province was based on a specimen that is here assigned to Microglanis carlae Vera Alcaraz, da Graça & Shibatta, 2008. In this way, the southernmost records for G. ribeiroi are to be excluded and the endemic nature of this species is confirmed for the Urugua-í and Iguazú basins.

Glanidium ribeiroi fue descrito para la cuenca del río Iguazú en el estado de Paraná, Brasil. En Argentina, la especie fue citada para las cuencas del río Iguazú y del arroyo Urugua-í en Misiones; y para algunos tributarios del río Paraná medio, como el arroyo Cuña Pirú en Misiones y el río Salado en Santa Fe. Luego de una revisión crítica de todos los registros argentinos de Glanidium ribeiroi concluimos que los especímenes citados para el arroyo Cuñá Pirú corresponden a Tatia neivai (Ihering, 1930) y que la cita para la provincia de Santa Fe se basó en un ejemplar que aquí se asigna a Microglanis carlae Vera Alcaraz, da Graça & Shibatta, 2008. De este modo deben descartarse los registros más australes de G. ribeiroi y se confirma su endemismo en las cuencas del Iguazú y del Urugua-í.

Trichomycterus barbouri (Eigenmann, 1911) is a little-known species with a discontinuous distribution from the Beni River in Bolivia, in the Amazon River basin, to northwestern and central Argentina, in the Río de la Plata basin. Here, we describe new records of T. barbouri from three rivers of the chaco-pampean plain, two in the Santiago del Estero province and one in the Cuarto River basin in Córdoba province. These reports allow expanding the known area of distribution of the species, extending southwards the limit of the known distribution. Trichomycterus barbouri is the only species of the genus widely present in the chaco-pampean plain.

Trichomycterus barbouri (Eigenmann, 1911) es una especie poco conocida que presenta una distribución discontinua desde el río Beni en Bolivia, cuenca del río Amazonas, hasta el noroeste y centro de la Argentina, en la cuenca del Río de la Plata. Se describen nuevos registros de T. barbouri en tres ríos de la llanura chaco-pampeana, dos en la provincia de Santiago del Estero y uno en el río Cuarto, en la provincia de Córdoba. Estos reportes permiten ampliar el área de distribución conocida para la especie, extendiendo más al sur su límite austral. Trichomycterus barbouri es la única especie del género que está ampliamente distribuida en la llanura chaco-pampeana.

The paleoichthyological record from the early Pliocene of Farola Monte Hermoso locality, southern Buenos Aires province (Argentina) is still patchy and biased. During such time span, this locality may be related to the Río Colorado paleobasin, and consequently may have been related to the Austral Ichthyogeographical Region. In the present contribution we describe a new genus and species of a very large Percichthyidae, coming from fluvial deposits of the Monte Hermoso Formation. The new taxon constitutes the sister group of the genera Percichthys and Santosius. This finding, together with other previous paleoichthyological records, as well as phylogenetic and phylogeographic molecular analyses of living taxa, suggest the existence of an ichthyofaunistic turnover for the late Neogene in the Patagonian region. In this way, the current composition of the Patagonian ichthyofauna would be of recent age, possibly from the Pleistocene.

Los registros paleoictiológicos del Plioceno temprano de la localidad de Farola Monte Hermoso, al sur de la provincia de Buenos Aires (Argentina) son aún escasos y sesgados. Durante este lapso, dicha localidad habría estado vinculada a la paleocuenca del Río Colorado, por lo que se relacionaría con la Región Ictiogeográfica Austral. En la presente contribución se describe un nuevo género y especie de Percichthyidae de gran tamaño, procedente de los depósitos fluviales de la Formación Monte Hermoso, el cual comparte caracteres derivados con los géneros sudamericanos Percichthys y Santosius. Este hallazgo, conjuntamente con otros registros paleoictiológicos previos y análisis moleculares de taxones actuales, sugieren un recambio ictiofaunístico de importancia para el Neógeno tardío en la región Patagónica. De este modo, la conformación actual de la icitiofauna patagónica sería de reciente data, posiblemente a partir del Pleistoceno.

The marine catfishes of the genus Genidens are endemic of the south Atlantic coasts of South America. The clade is composed by four extant species, distributed from the southern coast of Brazil to northern Patagonia, though some species can occasionally be registered in southern Patagonia. The presence of the species Genidens planifrons in Argentinean shores is confirmed on the basis of new records. The taxonomical identification of this species is sustained by a series of reliable morphological and osteological characters. The presence of this species in Argentinean territory considerably extends its southern distribution.

Los bagres marinos del género Genidens son formas endémicas de la costa Atlántica sur de América del Sur. El clado se compone por cuatro especies vivientes distribuidas desde la costa sur de Brasil hasta la Patagonia septentrional, aunque ocasionalmente alguna especie puede ser registrada en la Patagonia austral. Sobre la base de novedosos registros se confirma la presencia en las costas argentinas de la especie de Genidens planifrons. La identificación taxonómica de esta especie es sustentada por una serie de caracteres morfológicos y osteológicos de confiable valor taxonómico. La presencia de esta especie en el territorio argentino amplia considerablemente la distribución austral conocida para esta especie.

In this contribution we analyze the small mammals associations recovered from the archaeological site El Shincal de Quimivil, Catamarca Province, Argentina. The sample represents three occupation times between the XIV and XVII centuries. High frequencies of vertebral elements and isolated incisors as well as the absence of clear signs of dissolution on bones and teeth suggest that the association would not be the product of the trophic activities of predators but it would be related to eto-ecological attributes of the recorded species. The sample, dominated by the cricetid Calomys cf. C. musculinus, is also composed by one didelphimorphian (Thylamys cf. T. pallidior), three sigmodontine rodents (Akodon cf. A. dolores, Graomys griseofavus, and Phyllotis xanthopygus), and two species of caviomorph rodents (Ctenomys sp., and Microcavia australis). The quantitative and qualitative taxonomic composition of the historical sample, with the dominance of Calomys cf., C. musculinus respect to the other small mammals, indicates differences respect to the environment naturally developed in this area, probably related to the establishment of incipient agroecosystems. The absence of Eligmodontia, a genus whose species inhabit arid environments with sparse vegetation and bare sandy or stony soils, could be vinculated with more humid local conditions and the irrigation practices by human populations. The poor knowledge of prehispanic, historical, and present small mammal associations in this area of Monte ecoregion, prevents an adequate comparison of the studied sample and the construction of an environmental scheme from the archaeofaunistic record. The particularly humid microenvironment by the establishment of agricultural practices constitutes an additional factor that makes the comparison with additional samples coming from nearby areas very difficult.

En el presente trabajo se analizan las asociaciones de micromamíferos registradas en el sitio arqueológico El Shincal de Quimivil, provincia de Catamarca, Argentina. El yacimiento representa tres períodos de ocupación humana, abarcando un intervalo entre los siglos XIV y XVII de la Era. La alta frecuencia de elementos vertebrales e incisivos aislados junto con la ausencia de claras marcas de disolución sugiere que el conjunto no sería producto de la actividad de depredadores, sino que estaría relacionada con causas eto-ecológicas de las especies registradas. La muestra, dominada por Calomys cf. C. musculinus, está integrada además por un didelfimorfo (Thylamys cf. T. pallidior), tres especies de roedores sigmodontinos (Akodon cf. A. dolores, Graomys griseofavus y Phyllotis xanthopygus) y dos de roedores caviomorfos (Ctenomys sp., y Microcavia australis). La composición taxonómica cuantitativa y cualitativa de la muestra de tiempos históricos, con la dominancia de Calomys cf., C. musculinus sobre otros pequeños mamíferos, sugiere modificaciones respecto al ambiente original, probablemente relacionada al establecimiento de agroecosistemas incipientes. La ausencia de Eligmodontia, un género cuyas especies habitan ambientes áridos con escasa vegetación y suelos desnudos arenosos o pedregosos, puede vincularse a condiciones locales de mayor humedad que en el presente y/o al aprovechamiento de este sector a través de prácticas de riego por parte de los pobladores. El escaso conocimiento de las asociaciones de pequeños mamíferos para tiempos pre-hispánicos, históricos y modernos en este sector del Monte impide una comparación adecuada de la muestra estudiada y la reconstrucción de un esquema ambiental a partir del registro arqueofaunístico. El microambiente particularmente húmedo por el establecimiento de áreas agrícolas constituye un factor adicional que dificulta su comparación con muestras adicionales provenientes de áreas circundantes.

A espécie fóssil Arrhinolemur scalabrinii, descrita de depósitos do Mioceno Superior de Entre Ríos, Argentina, é reavaliada. Apesar da espécie ter sido originalmente incluída em Primata (Mammalia), constituindo-se posteriormente no único membro da ordem Arrhinolemuroidea dentro de Mammalia, nossa análise indica que o espécime trata-se de um peixe do gênero Leporinus, família Anostomidae (Characiformes). A espécie é redescrita, e os caracteres que fundamentam a nova posição do gênero são discutidos

The fossil species Arrhinolemur scalabrinii, which was described from late Miocene deposits of Entre Ríos, Argentina, is reevaluated. Whereas the species was originally placed in the Primates (Mammalia) and later made the unique member of the order Arrhinolemuroidea within the Mammalia, our analysis indicates that the specimen is rather a fish of the genus Leporinus, family Anostomidae (Characiformes). The species is redescribed, and the characters that support its new generic assignment are discussed.

In this contribution we present and describe the remains of the bony fish cf. Synbranchus, exhumed from fossiliferous levels of the Río Bermejo Formation, Mansilla, southeastern Formosa province, Argentina. These materials constitute the only fish remains exhumed in this area, and they were found in association with extinct mammals which are characteristic of the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene. Until now, only few fossil remains of Synbranchidae were known in South America. The earliest records come from the lowermost section of the Upper Pleistocene ("Belgranense") from the Pampean region, Buenos Aires, Argentina. The materials coming from the Rio Bermejo Formation represent the first fossil record of a Synbranchidae cf. Synbranchus from the Early Holocene.

En este trabajo se presentan y describen los restos óseos de peces Synbranchidae cf. Synbranchus recuperados en los niveles fosilíferos de la Formación Río Bermejo de la localidad de Mansilla, sudeste de la provincia de Formosa, Argentina. Estos materiales constituyen los únicos restos de peces recuperados en dicha localidad y fueron hallados asociados a mamíferos fósiles característicos de finales del Pleistoceno y comienzos del Holoceno. Hasta el presente solo se conocen escasos restos fósiles de sinbránquidos en América del Sur. Los restos más antiguos corresponden a la parte más baja del Pleistoceno Superior ("Belgranense") de la región Pampeana de Buenos Aires. Los materiales de la Formación Río Bermejo representan el primer registro fósil conocido de un Synbranchidae cf. Synbranchus para el Holoceno temprano.

A nearly complete specimen belonging to the family Moridae is described in this paper. The material has been collected in outcrops referable to the Chenque Formation (Oligocene-Miocene) from the Chubut province, Argentina. The specimen constitutes the first fossil record for the Gadiformes in Argentina and one of the first osteological occurrences for Moridae. The morphology of the specimen suggests affinities with the genera Physiculus and Salilota. The presence of Moridae in the Early Miocene of Patagonia and New Zealand is in agreement with previous hypotheses suggesting marine transantarctic connections between both landmasses during Late Oligocene - Early Miocene times.

En el presente trabajo se describen restos de un especimen relativamente completo perteneciente a la familia Moridae. Dicho ejemplar ha sido colectado en sedimentos referibles a la Formación Chenque (Oligoceno-Mioceno) de la provincia de Chubut, Argentina. Este material constituye el primer registro fósil concreto de un Gadiformes para Argentina y los primeros materiales óseos fósiles registrados para Moridae. La morfología de los ejemplares sugiere afinidades con los géneros Physiculus y Salilota. La presencia de Moridae en el Mioceno Temprano de Patagonia y Nueva Zelanda se encuentra de acuerdo con hipótesis previas que indican conexiones marítimas transantárticas entre ambas regiones geográficas durante el Oligoceno Tardío - Mioceno Temprano.
