RESUMO. Talitroides topitotum (Burt, 1934) (Talitridae) é um dos representantes de Amphipoda que se adaptaram ao ambiente terrestre. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar a estrutura populacional deste talitrídeo e correlacionar entre si dados morfométricos e aspectos reprodutivos da população. O estudo foi realizado na região central do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, entre junho de 2020 e maio de 2021. Para tal, foram coletados mensalmente espécimes com o auxílio de armadilhas de queda (pitfalls), que ficaram expostos durante 48 horas no campo. Os animais foram sexados, fotografados e medidos (comprimento corporal, comprimento cefálico e comprimento do marsúpio - em milímetros). As fêmeas ovígeras tiveram todos os seus ovos contados e medidos. Além disso, foram comparados os tamanhos máximos e latitudes de estudos populacionais realizados com a espécie. No total foram coletados 492 indivíduos, dos quais 62 eram fêmeas ovígeras, 188 não-ovígeras e 242 juvenis. Nenhum macho foi amostrado. Houve correlação significativa entre o comprimento corporal e cefálico e o comprimento corporal e de marsúpio nas fêmeas ovígeras. Não houve correlação entre os dados morfométricos e a fecundidade das fêmeas. Na análise de correlação entre tamanho dos talitrídeos e latitude houve correlação positiva, embora não significativa. O tamanho corporal pode ser inferido a partir do tamanho cefálico, bem como o do marsúpio a partir do corporal, pois ambos estão fortemente correlacionados. O fato de não haver relação entre tamanho e fecundidade pode estar relacionado a fatores ambientais, já que os mesmos podem afetar a reprodução do grupo. No que diz respeito à relação entre tamanho e latitude, mais estudos devem ser conduzidos com uma amostra maior, a fim de que seja verificada se a relação é significativa ou não.

ABSTRACT. Tallitroides topitotum (Burt, 1934) (Talitridae) is one of the representatives of Amphipoda that has adapted to terrestrial environment. This research aimed to describe the population structure of this talitrid in the morphometric and reproductive aspects. The study was carried out in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, from June 2020 to May 2021. The talitrids were monthly collected with pitfalls exposed for 48 hours and they were sexed, photographed, and measured (body length, cephalic length, and marsupium length - in millimeters). Ovigerous females had their eggs counted and measured. In addition, we correlated the size data and the sampling latitudes of T. topitotum from previous and present studies. A total of 492 individuals were collected, from which 62 were ovigerous females, 188 non-ovigerous females, and 242 juveniles. No male was sampled. There was a significant correlation between body and head lengths and body and marsupium lengths in ovigerous females. We found no correlation between morphometric data and female fertility. Although not significant, there was a positive correlation between the size of talitrids and the latitude of occurrence. Body size can be inferred from head size, and marsupium size from body size, as both are strongly correlated. The absence of relationship between body size and fecundity may be related to environmental factors that can affect the talitrid reproduction. A clear relationship between the mean body size of T. topitotum and the latitude of their occurrence can be obtained with more studies conducted with a large sampling.

Resumo O objectivo deste trabalho foi analisar a diversidade da entomofauna encontrada em pomar de árvores frutíferas em função de diferentes técnicas de amostragem, no Sul do Brasil. Foram utilizadas três técnicas para amostragem: caça-mosca, técnica da bandeja colorida e armadilhas do tipo pitfall, em frutíferas de: Citrus sinensis, Ficus carica e Rubus fruticosus. Foi registrada uma abundância total de 12.943 indivíduos, distribuídos em nove ordens e 46 famílias. As ordens com maior abundância foram Diptera (60,07%), Coleoptera (31,07%) e Hymenoptera (7,47%). Considerando os índices de diversidade em função das armadilhas, houve maior diversidade nas bandejas (H= 0,9454) do que na pitfall (H=0,7788) e armadilha caça-mosca (H=0,6306). Tal facto ocorreu, possivelmente, em função uma menor dominância das distintas ordens nas bandejas. Cada método considera um comportamento dos insectos, seja alimentar ou de locomoção, e se complementam para um levantamento que se aproxime do real em pomar de frutíferas.

Abstract The aim of this study was to analyze the entomofauna diversity found in the orchard of fruit trees, in function of different techniques to capture, in Southern Brazil. Three traps were used for insect collection, hunting-fly, colored tray technique and pitfall. Were choose the follow fruit trees: Citrus sinensis, Ficus carica, and Rubus fruticosus. An abundance of 12,943 individuals was recorded, distributed in nine orders and 46 families. The most abundant orders were Diptera (60.07%), Coleoptera (31.07%) and Hymenoptera (7.47%). Considering the diversity index in function of the traps, there were a bigger diversity on the trays (H= 0.9454) than on pitfall (H=0.7788) and hunting-fly traps (H=0.6306). That occurs due, possibly, a smaller dominance in the trays. Each method considers an insect behavior, of feed or of locomotion, and complete each other to a realistic assessment in a fruit trees orchard.

O presente estudo teve como objetivo verificar de forma comparativa a relação entre ermitões e conchas utilizadas por duas populações de Loxopagurus loxochelis. Foram realizadas coletas mensais, de julho 2002 a junho 2003, nas Enseadas de Caraguatatuba e de Ubatuba, São Paulo, Brasil. Os animais amostrados foram identificados quanto ao sexo, pesados, e mensurados; as conchas de gastrópodes foram identificadas, mensuradas, pesadas e tiveram seu volume interno determinado. Para relacionar as variáveis dos ermitões com as conchas foram utilizadas a análise de componentes principais (PCA) e a árvore de regressão. As três conchas de gastrópodes utilizadas mais intensamente diferiram em tamanho de acordo com a PCA. A árvore de regressão explicou com sucesso a relação entre características do ermitão e volume interno das conchas habitadas. Inferiu-se que a relação entre a morfometria de um ermitão e sua concha não é simples e não é possível de ser explicada com base somente em correlações diretas entre atributos do corpo e da concha. Inúmeros fatores (como morfometria e disponibilidade da concha, condições ambientais e competição inter e intra-específica) interagem e devem ser levados em consideração na escolha de uma concha pelos ermitões, resultando no diversificado padrão de ocupação de conchas demonstrado neste e em outros trabalhos correlatos.

The present study aimed to comparatively verify the relation between the hermit crabs and the shells they use in two populations of Loxopagurus loxochelis. Samples were collected monthly from July 2002 to June 2003, at Caraguatatuba and Ubatuba Bay, São Paulo, Brazil. The animals sampled had their sex identified, were weighed and measured; their shells were identified, measured and weighed, and their internal volume determined. To relate the hermit crab's characteristics and the shells' variables, principal component analysis (PCA) and a regression tree were used. According to the PCA analysis, the three gastropod shells most frequently used by L. loxochelis varied in size. The regression tree successfully explained the relationship between the hermit crab's characteristics and the internal volume of the inhabited shell. It can be inferred that the relationship between the morphometry of an individual hermit crab and its shell is not straightforward and it is impossible to explain only on the basis of direct correlations between the body's and the shell's attributes. Several factors (such as the morphometry and the availability of the shell, environmental conditions and inter- and intraspecific competition) interact and seem to be taken into consideration by the hermit crabs when they choose a shell, resulting in the diversified pattern of shell occupancy shown here and elsewhere.

In an ecological context, information on the movement and activity is important for understanding the requirements of habitat, resource usage patterns and the potential of interspecific interactions. The aim of this study was to examine the displacement pattern on daily activity and occupancy of substrates by Aegla manuinflata using radio-telemetry technique on field on Southern Brazil. Four adult males were monitored during nine days. The aeglids showed a significantly greater displacement toward upstream than downstream. Aegla manuinflata individuals showed higher displacement activity during the night period. Although activity was not constant: the animals spent one or more days without displacement. All aeglids showed locomotion activity concentrated between 11:43 p.m. and 02:25 a.m., although it was not restrict to sunset period and night. Individuals showed specific occupation of different types of substrate, but a pattern in the occupation of substrates as a function of the photoperiod was not observed. In this study, using a new technique for tracking aeglids, it was concluded that A. manuinflata is capable of actively dislocate throughout the stream, either toward upstream and downstream, passing through obstacles which may represent ability of re-colonization. The animals are more active during the night period, probably a strategy to avoid predators that are active during the day; the selection of substrate is not associated to sediment texture.

Gastropod shells occupied by hermit crabs are an important attachment substrate for epifauna, and these shells are often damaged. The present study aimed to characterize the epibionts and extent of damage for gastropod shells occupied by the hermit crab Loxopagurus loxochelis (Moreira, 1901). Samples were collected monthly over a period of one year (from July 2002 through June 2003), in the Caraguatatuba and Ubatuba regions, on the northern coast of São Paulo, Brazil. The sampling was performed using a fishing boat equipped with double-rig nets. The shells were identified and weighed. Loxopagurus loxochelis occupied 14 gastropod shell species in Caraguatatuba and five in Ubatuba. In the two areas, approximately 55% of these gastropod shells bore epibionts, and a significantly large number (p < 0.05) showed no damage. The presence of epibionts did not significantly change the mean weight of shells. This cover may provide camouflage to the animals when they are associated with the sandy substrate, which possibly affects the occupancy of the shells by the hermit crabs. Undamaged shells may reflect a high availability of shells in good condition in the environment.

The present study determined the distribution pattern of the hermit crab Loxopagurus loxochelis by a comparison of catch, depth and environmental factors at two separate bays (Caraguatatuba and Ubatuba) of São Paulo State, Brazil. The influence of these parameters on the distribution of males, non-ovigerous females and ovigerous females was also evaluated. Crabs were collected monthly, over a period of one year (from July/2002 to June/2003), in seven depths, from 5 to 35 m. Abiotic factors were monitored as follows: superficial and bottom salinity (psu), superficial and bottom temperature (°C), organic matter content (%) and sediment composition (%). In total, 366 hermit crabs were sampled in Caraguatatuba and 126 in Ubatuba. The highest frequency of occurrence was verified at 20 m during winter (July) in Caraguatatuba and 25 m during summer (January) in Ubatuba. The highest occurrences were recorded in the regions with bottom salinities ranging from 34 to 36 psu, bottom temperatures from 18 to 24°C and, low percentages of organic matter, gravel and mud; and large proportion of sand in the substrate. There was no significant correlation between the total frequency of organisms and the environmental factors analyzed in both regions. This evidence suggests that other variables as biotic interactions can influence the pattern of distribution of L. loxochelis in the analyzed region, which is considered the limit of the northern distribution of this species.

El presente estudio determinó el patrón de distribución del cangrejo ermitaño Loxopagurus loxochelis por medio una comparación de la captura, profundidad y factores ambientales en dos bahías separadas (Caraguatatuba y Ubatuba) del estado de São Paulo, Brasil. También se evaluó la influencia de parámetros medioambientales sobre la distribución de machos, hembras y hembras ovígeras. Los cangrejos se recolectaron mensualmente en las dos áreas de estudio, durante un año (julio de 2002 a junio de 2003), en siete profundidades, entre 5 y 35 m. Se registraron los factores abióticos: salinidad (psu) y temperatura (°C) en la superficie así como en el fondo, contenido de materia orgánica (%) y composición del sedimento (%). Se recolectó un total de 366 cangrejos en Caraguatatuba y 126 en Ubatuba. La mayor frecuencia de individos se obtuvo a una profundidad de 20 m en Caraguatatuba durante el invierno (julio) y a una profundidad de 25 m en Ubatuba durante el verano (enero). Las mayores frecuencias se registraron en áreas con salinidades entre 34 y 36 psu en el fondo, temperaturas entre 18 y 24°C también en el fondo y sustratos con bajos porcentajes de materia orgánica, grava y lodo, así como con altas proporciones de arena. No se encontró correlación significativa entre la frecuencia total de organismos y los factores medioambientales analizados en ninguna de las dos regiones. Estos resultados sugieren que algún otro factor ambiental o interacción biótica podría ser responsable de los patrones de distribución de L. loxochelis en las regiones estudiadas, consideradas zonas limítrofes de la distribución norte del cangrejo ermitaño.

O presente estudo teve como objetivo caracterizar a ocupação de conchas por ermitões no litoral da cidade de Rio Grande, Estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Os animais foram amostrados em 14 radiais em Rio Grande, entre 12 e 50 metros de profundidade. Cada ermitão e sua respectiva concha foram identificados, pesados e medidos. Um total de 408 animais foi capturado, pertencentes às famílias Diogenidae e Paguridae; as duas espécies mais abundantes foram Dardanus insignis (de Saussure, 1858) e Loxopagurus loxochelis (Moreira, 1901). Os ermitões ocuparam conchas de 13 espécies de gastrópodes, principalmente de Buccinanops lamarckii (Kiener, 1834) e B. gradatum (Deshayes, 1844). Dardanus insignis utilizou 12 das 13 espécies de moluscos registradas; Loxopagurus loxochelis utilizou nove. De um modo geral, o padrão de ocupação de conchas apresenta uma correlação entre o tamanho do ermitão e o tamanho da concha; no caso das duas espécies de ermitões mais abundantes, a maior correlação foi entre peso/tamanho do animal e o tamanho da abertura da concha, evidenciando, que a ocupação de conchas se dá não apenas pela disponibilidade local das mesmas, mas também pelas relações entre as variáveis dos ermitões e das conchas de gastrópodes.

The present study aimed to characterize the shell occupation by hermit crabs at the Rio Grande city, state of Rio Grande do Sul. Animals were sampled at 14 radials in Rio Grande, between 12 and 50 meters depth. Each hermit crab and its respective shell were identified, weighted and measured. A total of 408 animals were captured, of families Paguridae and Diogenidae; the most abundant species were Dardanus insignis (de Saussure, 1858) and Loxopagurus loxochelis (Moreira, 1901). The animals occupied shells from 13 gastropod species, mainly of Buccinanops lamarckii (Kiener, 1834) and B. gradatum (Deshayes, 1844). Dardanus insignis utilized shells from 12 of the 13 mollusks species registered; L. loxochelis from nine ones. In a general way, the shell occupation patterns present a correlation between the hermit crab size and the shell size, in the case of the two most abundant species the strongest correlation was between their size/weight and shell aperture width, evidencing that shells occupation is given not only by their local availability, but also by the relationship between hermit crabs variables and gastropod shells.

A estrutura populacional do ermitão Loxopagurus loxochelis (Moreira, 1901) foi analisada por meio da distribuição de freqüência dos animais em classes de tamanho e da razão sexual. Espécimes foram coletados mensalmente no período de um ano (julho de 2002 a junho de 2003), em sete transectos (5 aos 35 m de profundidade), usando barco equipado com duas redes do tipo double-rig, nas enseadas de Caraguatatuba e de Ubatuba (Estado de São Paulo, Brasil). Em Caraguatatuba foram coletados 366 animais, sendo 222 machos (60,65%), 114 fêmeas não-ovígeras (31,15%) e 30 fêmeas ovígeras (8,20%) e, em Ubatuba, 126 ermitões, dos quais 81 machos (64,28%), 38 fêmeas não-ovígeras (30,16%) e sete fêmeas ovígeras (5,56%). Em Caraguatatuba, a alta incidência de fêmeas ovígeras ocorreu durante o inverno (julho de 2002), enquanto em Ubatuba, o número foi incipiente. O comprimento do escudo cefalotorácico variou de 2,0 a 7,9mm (5,29 ± 0,96mm) em Caraguatatuba, e em Ubatuba, de 2,7 a 7,5 mm (5,32 ± 0,95mm). A média de tamanho dos machos foi significativamente maior do que das fêmeas em ambas as áreas. A razão sexual total foi favorável aos machos (1,54:1 em Caraguatatuba e 1,9:1 em Ubatuba). Houve maior freqüência de machos nas últimas classes de tamanho, acompanhando os padrões observados em decápodes e evidenciando a existência de dimorfismo sexual em L. loxochelis. A distribuição de freqüência total foi unimodal para ambos os sexos, nas duas áreas. A presença de um número maior de machos em relação a fêmeas pode ser indício de que existam diferentes taxas de crescimento e de mortalidade entre os sexos, além de distribuição espacial diferencial entre estes. Apesar das diferentes características geomorfológicas entre as regiões de Caraguatatuba e Ubatuba, foi observada uma dinâmica de desenvolvimento similar para ambas as populações.

This work characterized the population structure of the hermit crab Loxopagurus loxochelis (Moreira, 1901) in terms of size frequency distribution and sex ratio. Specimens were collected monthly, over a period of one year (from july 2002 to june 2003), in seven transects (from 5 to 35 m of depth) using fishing boat equipped with two double-rig trawl nets, in Caraguatatuba and Ubatuba regions (state of São Paulo, Brazil). A total of 366 hermit crabs were collected in Caraguatatuba [222 males (60.65%), 114 non-ovigerous females (31.15%) and 30 ovigerous females (8.20%)] and 126 hermit crabs in Ubatuba [81 males (64.28%), 38 non-ovigerous females (30.16%) and seven ovigerous females (5.56%)]. In Caraguatatuba the highest incidence of ovigerous females occurred during winter (july 2002), whereas in Ubatuba, the number was incipient. The cephalothoracic shield length ranged from 2.0 to 7.9mm (5.29 ± 0.96mm) in Caraguatatuba, and from 2.7 to 7.5mm (5.32 ± 0.95mm) in Ubatuba. The mean size of males was significantly larger than the mean size of females in both regions. Overall sex ratio was in favor of males (1.54:1 in Caraguatatuba and 1.9:1 in Ubatuba). Sexual dimorphism was recorded to L. loxochelis by the presence of males in the largest size classes, following the standard pattern observed in Decapoda. There was an unimodal size distribution for both sexes, with normal distributions in both regions. The higher number of males in relation to females may indicate the existence of different growth and mortality rates between the sexes. Despite of the different geomorphologic characteristics between Caraguatatuba and Ubatuba regions, the dynamics of development was similar for both populations.

O objetivo do presente trabalho foi caracterizar o ritmo de atividade e tempo de digestão em Aegla longirostri Bond-Buckup & Buckup, 1994. Os animais foram coletados em Santa Maria, RS, Brasil. Em laboratório, os animais foram transferidos para aquários individuais (5L). Para testar a atividade locomotora e alimentar dos aeglídeos um grupo de animais permaneceu sob luminosidade constante durante 12 horas, enquanto outro grupo permanecia no escuro, essa condição sendo invertida a cada 12 horas. As observações foram realizadas a cada 6 horas. Para determinar o tempo de digestão os animais foram alimentados e a cada 30 minutos um indivíduo era sacrificado. Aegla longirostri mostrou menor atividade em períodos de luminosidade, o que aconteceu nos dois grupos de animais. Essa espécie leva aproximadamente 5 horas para concluir a digestão extracelular. Os resultados sugerem que A. longirostri possui hábitos noturnos e provavelmente se alimenta sempre que há recursos disponíveis.

The aim of this work was to characterize the diel activity rhythm and time of digestion in Aegla longirostri Bond-Buckup & Buckup, 1994. The individuals were collected in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. In laboratory, the animals were kept in individuals glass aquariums (5L). To test locomotor and feeding activity of the aeglids, a group remained under constant luminosity for 12 hours, while another group was mantained in the dark, this condition being reversed at each 12 hours. The observations were taken at every 6 hours. For the determination of digestion's time the animals were fed, and one individual was sacrificed at each 30 minutes. Aegla longirostri showed lower activity in periods of light time. This condition was recorded for both groups of animals. This species takes approximately 5 hours to conclude its extracellular digestion. The results suggest that A. longirostri has nocturnal habits and probably feeds whenever resources are available.

A fauna bentônica tem um importante papel nos ambientes límnicos, fazendo parte da cadeia trófica e participando do fluxo de nutrientes. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a diversidade e a abundância dos invertebrados bentônicos em quatro cursos de água da região central do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Amostragens foram realizadas sazonalmente com uma rede de mão (puçá) nas margens e nos leitos dos arroios em cada local de coleta, entre Novembro de 2001 e Setembro de 2002. Para analisar os dados foram aplicados os índices de riqueza de Margalef, diversidade de Shannon e uniformidade de Pielou. Um total de 58 famílias e três outros grandes taxa (Hirudinea, Oligochaeta e Copepoda) de invertebrados foram identificados. Os maiores valores de diversidade e abundância foram encontrados nas margens dos arroios, seguindo um padrão verificado para regiões tropicais e subtropicais. Este é o primeiro inventário de invertebrados bentônicos da região central do Estado Rio Grande do Sul, e servirá de base para futuros estudos sobre a diversidade e a conservação dessa fauna frente às alterações antrópicas no ambiente.

The benthic fauna plays an important role in the trophic web and the nutrient flow of limnetic environments. This work aimed to study the diversity and abundance of the benthic invertebrates in four watercourses in the central region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Sampling was done seasonally at each site, with a long-handled net at the margins (banks) and streambed, from November 2001 through September 2002. Margalef richness, Shannon diversity and Pielou evenness indices were applied to the data analysis. A total of 58 families and three other major taxa (Hirudinea, Oligochaeta and Copepoda) of invertebrates were identified. The highest values of diversity and abundance were recorded at the margins of the rivers, in the same pattern found in other tropical and subtropical regions. This is the first inventory of benthic invertebrates from central region of Rio Grande do Sul, which will be important for future studies of the diversity and conservation of this fauna, because human alterations of the environment have already begun.
