A hilária trama de Les nègres du traducteur, romance de Claude Bleton publicado na França em 2004, permite-nos explorar as relações que tradutores estabelecem com seus autores e originais. O texto de Bleton é particularmente útil para uma discussão de algumas noções relacionadas a teorias contemporâneas do texto e da tradução que giram em torno da noção nietzschiana de "morte do autor". Aaron Janvier, narrador e protagonista de Bleton, é um escritor frustrado que consegue se transformar em um importante tradutor de romances espanhóis para o francês, cujo gosto pelas estratégias domesticadoras de tradução faz dele uma figura poderosa nos círculos editoriais de Paris, Madri e Barcelona. À medida que conquista mais e mais influência no mundo editorial, Janvier não hesita em transformar os autores que traduz em seus "nègres", ou seja, em ghostwriters encarregados de escrever os "originais" que devem ser estritamente fiéis às "traduções" que ele lhes envia. Quando alguns dos autores começam a questionar essa situação peculiar, Janvier os elimina sumariamente. Por meio de um exame detalhado da caracterização que Bleton faz do tradutor como um assassino, este artigo propõe uma reconsideração de alguns clichês que estão associados ao tradutor, ao seu trabalho e à suposta impropriedade de sua íntima relação com textos e autores.

The hilarious plot of Claude Bleton's novel, Les nègres du traducteur, published in France in 2004, allows us to explore the relationships that translators are often perceived to establish with their authors and originals. Bleton's text is particularly helpful for a discussion of some notions that are usually related to contemporary theories of text and translation that revolve around the post-Nietzschean notion of the "death of the author". Aaron Janvier, Bleton's narrator and protagonist, is a frustrated writer who manages to become a prominent translator of Spanish novels into French, and whose taste for domesticating translation strategies turns him into a powerful figure in the publishing circles of Paris, Madrid and Barcelona. As Janvier gets increasingly influential in the publishing world, he does not hesitate to turn the authors he should be translating into his "nègres", that is, into ghostwriters who are in charge of writing the "originals" that are expected to be strictly faithful to the "translations" he sends them. When some of his authors begin to reconsider their peculiar arrangement, Janvier simply kills them off. Through a close examination of Bleton's characterization of the translator as killer, this essay proposes to rethink some recurrent clichés associated with translators, their craft, and the alleged impropriety of their close relationship with texts and authors.

O senso comum em geral associa as traduções e os tradutores a diferentes formas de traição. Neste ensaio pretendo me concentrar na forma pela qual o tema da traição do tradutor é tratado, com base na representação de um triângulo amoroso envolvendo a competição de dois homens pelo amor de uma mulher. O objeto de minha análise será um conto de Moacyr Scliar, intitulado "Notas ao Pé da Página", publicado em 1995. Creio que esse tipo de leitura pode nos auxiliar a compreender a reputação geralmente negativa dos tradutores numa cultura que celebra originais e que tende a desconfiar de qualquer atividade que possa interferir com a sua suposta integridade. Também pode nos ajudar a compreender as motivações das principais teorias de tradução que sempre se interessaram em desenvolver mecanismos para o controle e a disciplina dos tradutores e de suas intervenções nos textos que necessariamente têm que reescrever.

Common sense has often associated both translations and translators with different forms of betrayal. In this paper I intend to focus on how the theme of betrayal in translation is treated in terms of a love triangle, in which the translator's "unreliable" handling of the original is associated with some form of competition with the author for the love of a woman. The object of my analysis will be a short story by Moacyr Scliar entitled "Notas ao Pé da Página", first published in Brazil in 1995. I believe that such an analysis may help us further understand the often negative reputation translators seem to have in a culture that worships originals and tends to distrust any activity that somehow "touches" them. It may also help us reflect on why mainstream translation theories have always been so interested in controlling and disciplining translators and their interventions in the texts they necessarily have to rewrite.

Este trabalho faz parte de uma série de textos que tenho dedicado ao exame do tratamento dispensado ao tradutor (e a outros "trabalhadores" textuais semelhantes como intérpretes, revisores, críticos e leitores profissionais) em alguns textos de ficção. Especificamente neste ensaio, examino as relações que se estabelecem entre o narrador (como porta-voz do Autor) e o revisor "subversivo" Raimundo Silva no romance de José Saramago, História do Cerco de Lisboa. Como na maioria das abordagens teóricas e como na opinião que o senso comum tipicamente reserva a esse tipo de trabalho textual, o livro de Saramago sugere que, a partir da perspectiva autoral, o que se deve proteger é a alegada "sacralidade" do original, como propriedade privada do Autor, e somente a este se reserva o direito à criatividade e a uma vida (pessoal e profissional) plena.

This paper is part of a series of texts I have devoted to the exam of the treatment given to translators (as well as to other textual "workers" such as interpreters, proofreaders, critics and professional readers) in a few works of fiction. In this paper in particular I am interested in examining the relationship which is established between the narrator (as the Author's spokesman) and the "subversive" proofreader named Raimundo Silva in José Saramago's novel História do Cerco de Lisboa (History of the Siege of Lisbon). Just as in most theoretical approaches and in the way common sense generally treats this kind of textual work, Saramago's novel suggests that, from the point of view of the Author, who is the only one granted the right to be creative and both personally and professionally fulfilled, what needs to be protected is the "sacredness" of the original and everything it stands for.

A partir da década de 1960, a reflexão sobre tradução começou a conquistar espaços mais definidos dentro das instituições e publicações acadêmicas. Desde então, as tentativas explícitas de ampliar e consolidar esses espaços, de caráter basicamente essencialista, têm declarado seu interesse em tornar essa reflexão o mais racional e sistemática possível, o que não apenas a legitimaria enquanto área de pesquisa, mas também como instrumento legislador de toda a prática de tradução, quaisquer que sejam as línguas, os objetivos e as circunstâncias envolvidas. O presente trabalho se propõe apresentar um perfil crítico das principais tentativas de ocupação dos territórios acadêmicos reivindicados em nome dos "estudos da tradução", mostrando que o que as têm motivado, sobretudo, é um certo impulso imperialista em que o que está realmente em jogo é o prestígio e o poder das tendências em nome das quais se pretende disciplinar a tarefa do tradutor.

Since the early 1960’s, the study of translation has begun to conquer a more defined space within academic institutions and publications. Since then, all the basically essentialist attempts at widening and consolidating such a space have declared their interest in making that study as rational and as systematic as possible, so that it would be recognized as a legitimate research area which should also legislate over all translation practices, no matter which languages, goals or circumstances were involved. This paper intends to present a critical account of the main attempts at occupying the academic terrain claimed by "translation studies," arguing that what has motivated them, above all, is a certain imperialistic thrust in which what is actually at stake is the prestige and the power of the trends in the name of which they intend to discipline the translator’s task.
