Abstract Clay minerals are still widely used in pharmaceutical products for human health and cosmetic purposes. Pre-formulation studies were conducted to identify solid-state properties of pink clay, a sample from Diamantina, Brazil. Among the solid properties to be analyzed, we have selected type identification, iron phases, crystallinity, powder flow characteristics, thermal behavior, and non-isothermal phase transition kinetics. The pink clay is composed of (1:1) clay type and kaolinite as the main component. The Mössbauer spectrum of pink clay shows Fe3+(α-Fe2O3) hematite, Fe2+, and Fe3+ with large Δ/2ξq of about 2.80 and 2.69 mm.s-1 respectively, related to iron silicates, most likely pyroxene, and a superparamagnetic Fe3+. Pink clay exhibits poor flow properties. The thermal behavior indicates a phase-transition between 400 - 600 ºC associated with the dehydroxylation of the pink clay system requiring ~300 kJ mol-1, being constant until the process reaches a conversion of ~50% when the energy is enhanced to ~530 kJ mol-1, concluding the whole dehydroxylation process (α=80%). Solid-state properties and characteristics found for the pink clay must be considered for the proper design of formulations. The pitting corrosion of supermartensitic stainless steel (SMSS) was studied in an aqueous solution of 0.1 mol/L NaCl using the scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) and cyclic voltammetry. The SMSS showed 0.9% of retained austenite, as verified by Mössbauer spectroscopy. Cuboidal TiN particles were identified on the steel surfaces, by using optical, scanning electron, and transmission microscopy, associated to Mg-Ca-Al rich precipitates. Pit nucleation was slow and only verified after 24 h, associated to TiN/CaO·MgO·Al2O3 complex inclusions, thus on original interdendritic spaces, where lower Cr content and the presence of inclusions are expected.

The oil from the macaúba (Acrocomia aculeata) fruit, a native palm in Brazil, has a real potential for the industrial production of biodiesel. This report describes an experimental work devoted to monitor the chemical behavior of the fatty acid methyl esters from oil of the macaúba fruit kernel and the leaching of metal elements into the biodiesel put in contact with the ASTM A283 grade C and API X65 carbon steels, used to build fuel storage tanks and biodiesel pipelines. The mean values of esters contents points that the analytical precision from atomic absorption measurements was not enough to support a statistically reliable interpretation of the chemical leaching of metals into the biodiesel; a more accurate set of data must be obtained with more sensitive chemical analytical techniques. From the Mössbauer data, the surface of the non - galvanized steels in contact with this biodiesel for up to 105 days tend to be somehow protected against most oxidative reactions even in direct contact with air, although few amount magnetite (Fe3O4) was detected.

In this work two perovskites were prepared: LaMn1-xFe xO3, and LaMn0.1-x Fe0.90Mo xO3. XRD and Mössbauer spectroscopy suggest the formation of pure phase perovskite with the incorporation of Fe and Mo in the structure. The catalytic activity of these materials was studied in two reactions with H2O2: the decomposition to O2, and the oxidation of the model organic contaminant methylene blue. The perovskite composition strongly affects the catalytic activity, while Fe decreases the H2O2 decomposition Mo strongly improves dye oxidation.

OBJETIVO: o presente trabalho teve como finalidade avaliar clinicamente uma nova alternativa mecânica para a erupção guiada ao plano oclusal de um dente pré-molar impactado empregando magnetos atrativos da liga samário-cobalto. METODOLOGIA: o tratamento cirúrgico-ortodôntico foi realizado em uma paciente jovem de 11 anos portadora de oclusão de Classe I de Angle, com impactação do segundo pré-molar inferior direito. O sistema magnético empregado consistiu de um magneto colado com resina fotopolimerizável sobre a superfície vestibular do dente impactado e um outro pólo magnético rígido incrustado em um aparelho banda alça. Previamente à instalação do sistema magnético no meio bucal, os magnetos foram caracterizados através de análise de fluorescência, difração de raios X e nível de magnetização. A relação força/distância empregada foi quantificada, os magnetos foram medidos e a geometria magnética bucal estabelecida. RESULTADOS: o tempo empregado na desimpactação foi de 40 dias e foram necessárias duas ativações magnéticas por aproximação dos magnetos neste intervalo. A opção magnética neste caso clínico foi bastante eficaz tanto em relação ao tempo de tratamento quanto em relação ao conforto proporcionado ao paciente. Os magnetos empregados geraram um campo de força contínuo e autônomo não sendo necessária a utilização de fios metálicos como guias de orientação na erupção e nem elásticos de tracionamento. CONCLUSÃO: esta possibilidade terapêutica poderá ser útil em desimpactações mais profundas tais como os caninos ectópicos, cuja ocorrência é freqüente.

AIM: the present work evaluated a new mechanical alternative to guide the eruption to the oclusal plan of a impacted bicuspid tooth using attractive cobalt-samarium magnets. METHODS: the treatment was accomplished in a 11 years old Class I young patient, with a impacted right inferior second premolar. The magnetic system consisted of magnets bonded to the vestibular surface of the impacted tooth and a rigid magnetic pole incrusted in a band and loop container. Previously to the installation of the magnetic system, the magnets were characterized through fluorescence analysis, X rays diffraction and magnetization level. The force/distance relationship used was quantified, the magnets were measured and the buccal magnetic geometry established. RESULTS: the time used in the desimpactation was of 40 days and were necessary two magnetic activations to approach the magnets in this interval. The magnetic option in this clinical case was quite effective so much in relation to the time of treatment as in regard to the comfort proportionated to the patient. The magnets generated a continuous and autonomous force field, not being necessary to use metallic threads as orientation guides in the eruption and nor elastic. CONCLUSION: this therapeutic possibility will frequently be useful in such deeper desimpactation as the canine teeth ectopics, seen in the daily activity.

Neste trabalho foram investigadas as reações entre o ligante heterocíclico nitrogenado 2,3,5,6-tetraquis(alfa-piridil)pirazina, TPP, e seis precursores de estanho, a saber: SnCl2, SnX4 (X = Cl ou Br), SnRCl3 (R = Ph ou Me) e SnPh2Cl2. Os produtos foram caracterizados por microanálise (C, H, N e Sn), espectroscopia no infravermelho (4000-200 cm-1), RMN de ¹H, 13C{¹H}, 13C-CP/MAS, 119Sn e 119Sn-MAS, bem como por espectroscopia Mössbauer de 119Sn. Todas as reações levaram ao isolamento de complexos bimetálicos, nos quais o TPP se comportou como um ligante bis-bidentado em ponte, ligando-se a cada centro metálico através de dois átomos de nitrogênio piridínicos. Este modo de coordenação é ainda raro na literatura e, pela primeira vez, é observado em complexos de TPP com um metal representativo.

In this work we investigated the reactivity of the nitrogen heterocyclic ligand 2,3,5,6-tetrakis(alpha-pyridyl)pyrazine, TPP, towards six tin-containing reagents, namely SnCl2, SnX4 (X = Cl or Br), SnRCl3 (R = Ph or Me), and SnPh2Cl2. The products were characterized by microanalysis (C, H, N, and Sn), IR spectroscopy (4000-200 cm-1), ¹H, 13C{¹H}, 13C-CP/MAS, 119Sn, and 119Sn-MAS NMR spectroscopy, as well as by 119Sn Mössbauer spectroscopy. All reactions yielded bimetallic adducts, in which TPP behaved as a bis-bidentate bridging ligand, binding to each metallic center through two pyridine nitrogen atoms. This coordination mode is so far quite rare and, for the first time, is reported for main group metal-TPP complexes.

In this work highly dispersed Ru-Sn bimetallic catalysts have been prepared from organobimetallic Cp(PPh3)2Ru-SnX3 (X = Cl or Br) complexes. These single source precursors can be easily impregnated in high surface area supports, such as activated carbon and sol-gel SiO2, and upon controlled thermal treatment the ligands are released as volatile products resulting in the formation of the bimetallic system Ru-Sn. Catalytic reactions, such as hydrodechlorination of CCl4 and chlorobenzene and TPR (Temperature Programmed Reduction) experiments carried out with these RuSn catalysts suggested a strong interaction between Ruthenium and Tin. Mössbauer measurements showed that these materials when exposed to air are immediately oxidized to form Sn (IV). It was shown that upon controlled reduction conditions with H2 it is possible to reduce selectively Sn to different oxidation states and different phases. The Sn oxidation state showed significant effect on the catalytic hydrogenation of 1,5-cyclooctadiene. The use of these single source precursors with a controlled decomposition/reduction procedure allows the preparation of unique catalysts with an intimate interaction between the components ruthenium and tin and the possibility of varying the Sn oxidation state around the Ru metal.

Granular systems composed by nanostructured magnetic materials embedded in a non-magnetic matrix present unique physical properties that depend crucially on their nanostructure. In this work, we have studied the structural and magnetic properties of NiZn-ferrite nanoparticles embedded in SiO2, a granular system synthesized by sol-gel processing. Samples with ferrite volumetric fraction x ranging from 6% to 78% were prepared, and characterized by X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy and vibrating sample magnetometry. Our results show the formation of pure stoichiometric NiZn-ferrite in the SiO2 matrix for x < 34%. Above these fraction, our samples presented also small amounts of Fe2O3. Mössbauer spectroscopy revealed the superparamagnetic behaviour of the ferrimagnetic NiZn-ferrite nanoparticles. The combination of different ferrite concentration and heat treatments allowed the obtaintion of samples with saturation magnetization between 1.3 and 68 emu/g and coercivity ranging from 0 to 123 Oe, value which is two orders of magnitude higher than the coercivity of bulk NiZn-ferrite.
