O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da associação entre o rizóbio e o Bacillus subtilis sobre a nodulação, a fixação de N2 e o crescimento do feijão-caupi (Vigna unguiculata) e da leucena (Leucaena leucocephala) cultivados em um Latossolo vermelho. Os tratamentos consistiram de: a) testemunha; b) fertilização com NPK; c) inoculação com rizóbio + PK; e d) inoculação com rizóbio + Bacillus subtilis + PK. Houve um aumento na nodulação do feijão-caupi com a coinoculação. A massa da parte aérea seca, o acúmulo de N e a leitura da clorofila em feijão-caupi foram maiores nos tratamentos fertilizados (NPK) e no tratamento coinoculado. No caso da leucena, não houve diferenças entre os tratamentos NPK, inoculado e coinoculado. As massas das raízes secas do feijão-caupi e leucena aumentaram com a coinoculação. A coinoculação rizóbio e Bacillus subtilis favoreceu o aumento na nodulação em feijão-caupi e tem potencial para aumentar a fixação biológica do N2 e o crescimento das plantas.

This research aimed to evaluate co-inoculation of Bradyrhizobium and Bacillus subtilis on nodulation, N2 fixation and growth of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) and leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala) grown in a red Oxisol. Treatments consisted by: a) control; b) NPK; c) inoculation with Bradyrhizobium + PK; d) co-inoculation Bradyrhizobium + Bacillus subtilis + PK. There was an increase in nodulation of cowpea with co-inoculation. The shoot dry weight, N accumulation and chlorophyll were higher in both co-inoculated and fertilized (NPK) treatments. For leucaena, there were not differences between NPK, inoculated and co-inoculated treatments. The dry weight roots of cowpea and leucaena increased with co-inoculation. The co-inoculation Bradyrhizobium and Bacillus subtilis favored the increase in nodulation of cowpea and it has potential to increase biological N2 fixation and plant growth.

A utilização de microrganismos para fins de controle biológico de doenças em plantas tem sido muito estudada no mundo. No caso do nematóide de cisto da soja (Heterodera glycines), uma das principais doenças da soja, o controle biológico é de grande importância devido à ausência de controle químico eficiente. Para se estudar o efeito de Bacilllus subtilis sobre H. glycines, foram conduzidos alguns experimentos de casa de vegetação e laboratório. Nos trabalhos de laboratório, verificou-se, em câmara de eclosão, que a presença de B. subtilis reduz a eclosão de ovos de H. glycines estimulados com exsudatos de sementes de soja. Foi observado também que o tratamento de raiz de soja com a bactéria inibiu a migração de larvas juvenis de H. glycines para a planta em comparação à raiz não tratada com a bactéria. Nos ensaios de casa de vegetação, utilizando-se vasos com solo infestados com ovos de H. glycines, observou-se uma redução de fêmeas na raiz de soja quando o solo ou sementes foram tratadas previamente com formulação pó-molhável ou calda contendo B. subtilis, respectivamente. Com base nesses resultados e sabendo-se que H. glycines apresenta dependência de estímulo de exsudatos vegetais para eclosão e orientação das larvas, pode-se afirmar que B. subtilis interfere nesse estímulo prejudicando o desenvolvimento do ciclo do nematóide.

The utilization of microorganisms for biological control of plant diseases has been studied in the world. In soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines), an important diseases in soybeans, biological control strategies are important tools mostly because the lack of an efficient chemical control. The effect of Bacillus subtilis on H. glycines was studied on greenhouse and laboratory experiments. The presence of B. subtilis reduced the number of appeared H. glycines eggs when under stimulus of soybean exudes. Also, treatment of soybean roots with B. subtilis inhibited the juvenile larvae of H. glycines migration towards the soybean roots. In greenhouse experiments using soil infested with eggs of H. glycines, a reduction in the number of females was observed in the soybean root when both soil and seeds were previously treated with either wettable powder or solution containing B. subtilis. Considering the results of this research, and that H. glycines depends on plant exude for show up and orientation of larvae, it can be assumed that B. subtilis might interfere in the nematode life cicle.

O Bacillus subtilis pode favorecer o desempenho simbiótico do rizóbio, pelos efeitos na inibição de fitopatógenos ou pela exsudação de fitormônios. Com o objetivo de verificar a viabilidade da co-infecção de sementes de soja com Bradyrhizobium e Bacillus foram conduzidos três experimentos, no Paraná, em solos com população estabelecida de Bradyrhizobium, em que as estirpes de Bradyrhizobium SEMIA 5019 e SEMIA 5080 e suas variantes tolerantes aos metabólitos de Bacillus foram co-infectadas com duas estirpes de Bacillus (AP-3 e PRBS-1), ou seus metabólitos. Na safra 1993/94, em Londrina, o tratamento de co-inoculação de Bradyrhizobium com os metabólitos formulados de Bacillus incrementou, significativamente, em relação ao não-inoculado, o número de nódulos (59%, estádio V3), a ocupação dos nódulos pelas estirpes de Bradyrhizobium (76%, R2) e o rendimento de grãos (24%); em Ponta Grossa, esses incrementos foram de 60%, 145% e 22%, respectivamente. Nessa safra, em Londrina, a co-inoculação das variantes tolerantes com os metabólitos de Bacillus também aumentou o rendimento (26%) e N total (17%) dos grãos de soja e incrementos significativos foram constatados, na ocupação dos nódulos, pela co-inoculação das variantes tolerantes com as células de Bacillus (78%). Os resultados obtidos indicam a viabilidade da co-inoculação, em sementes de soja, de metabólitos brutos ou formulados ou, ainda, de células de Bacillus subtilis, para incrementar a contribuição do processo de fixação biológica do nitrogênio.

Bacillus subtilis can improve rhizobial symbiotic performance by inhibiting plant pathogens or by the exudation of hormones. To verify the viability of co-inoculation of soybean seeds with Bradyrhizobium and Bacillus, three experiments were performed, in the State of Paraná, Brazil, in soils with established population of Bradyrhizobium. The Bradyrhizobium strains SEMIA 5019 and SEMIA 5080, and their natural variant strains tolerant to the metabolites of Bacillus were co-inoculated with two strains of Bacillus (AP-3 and PRBS-1), or their metabolites. In 1993/94, in Londrina, the co-inoculation of Bradyrhizobium with formulated metabolites increased significantly, in relation to non-inoculated control, nodule number (59%, stage V3), nodule occupancy by Bradyrhizobium strains carried on the inoculant (76%, R2) and soybean yield (24%); in Ponta Grossa, these increases were of 60%, 145% and 22%, respectively. Also in Londrina, the co-inoculation of the variant strains with crude metabolites of Bacillus has also increased yield (26%) and total N in grains (17%) and increases were verified by the co-inoculation of the Bradyrhizobium variant strains with Bacillus cells (78%). Consequently, the results have shown the viability of co-inoculating soybean seeds with crude or formulated metabolites, or with cells of Bacillus subtilis, to increase the contribution of the biological nitrogen fixation process.
