ABSTRACT: We verified the spatial and temporal distribution of the olive leaf moth (Palpita forficifera Munroe, 1959) in a new potential region for olive cultivation and evaluated the bioinsecticides effectiveness to control this pest. The experimental orchard composed by Koroneiki and Arbequina cultivars was planted in Pato Branco, Southwest region of Paraná, Brazil. In the field, larvae counts were performed weekly on 25 plants of each cultivar, for 12 months, to verify the spatial and temporal distribution. Furthermore, in laboratory conditions, second instar larvae of P. forficifera were fed with olive leaves treated with Azadirachta indica oil, Bacillus thuringiensis, Metarhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana, and the effectiveness in the larvae mortality was used to compare four bioinsecticides and control. The P. forficifera larvae occurred mainly during the three summer months, had a host preference for the ‘Arbequina’ (68.9% of total larvae) and occurred at random distribution patterns throughout the orchard. The A. indica oil and B. thuringiensis both caused almost 100% larvae mortality under laboratory conditions. RESUMO: Os objetivos deste trabalho foram verificar a distribuição espacial e temporal da lagarta-da-oliveira (Palpita forficifera Munroe, 1959) em uma nova região com potencial de cultivo de oliveira e avaliar a eficiência de controle desta praga com bioinseticidas. O pomar experimental com as cultivares Koroneiki e Arbequina foi implantado em Pato Branco, região Sudoeste do Paraná, Brasil. No pomar foram realizadas contagens semanais de lagartas em 25 plantas de cada cultivar, durante 12 meses, para verificar a distribuição espacial e temporal. Além disso, em condições de laboratório, larvas de segundo instar foram submetidas à alimentação com folhas de oliveira tratadas com óleo de neem (Azadirachta indica), Bacillus thuringiensis, Metarhizium anisopliae e Beauveria bassiana, e a efetividade de mortalidade das larvas foi utilizada para comparação entre os quatro bioinseticidas e a testemunha. ABSTRACT Tomatoes are a highlight in the organic vegetables production, but in order to cultivate them, there is a lack of information on cultivars adapted to the organic system. The objective of this study was to evaluate the productive performance and to characterize the quality attributed to tomato fruits under the organic production system. The experiment was conducted in field, on an agroecological farm , in the municipality of Verê, Paraná State - Brazil. The experiment consisted on fourteen tomato cultivars, under a randomized complete block design, with four replications. The evaluated traits were the total and commercial fruit production, total and commercial number of fruits, mass and average diameter of commercial fruits and physicochemical quality traits (firmness, pH, color (L*, C and h°), soluble solids (SS), titratable acidity (TA), and the ratio of SS/TA). Considering together production traits and fruit quality aspects, the cultivars Netuno, Aguamiel, and Cordilheira can be considered the best choices, having potential to be recommended for organic production system.

O efeito da alimentação em plantas sobre os aspectos biológicos de Podisus nigrispinus (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) foi avaliado. Ninfas e adultos desse predador foram alimentados com pupas de Tenebrio molitor L. (Coleotpera: Tenebrionidae) em plantas de Eucalyptus urophylla no campo ou, apenas, em laboratório. O desenvolvimento e a sobrevivência ninfal desse predador, além do período de pré-oviposição, número de posturas, viabilidade dos ovos e a fertilidade e longevidade de fêmeas foram avaliados. A planta de eucalipto proporcionou um incremento no desenvolvimento de P. nigrispinus. Isto demonstra que esse predador pode apresentar maior crescimento populacional com plantas de eucalipto e pupas de T. molitor alimentado com apenas a presa (condições controladas). A planta pode fornecer nutrientes que aumentam o crescimento populacional e a eficiência de P. nigrispinus para o controle biológico em plantios de eucalipto.

The effect of plant feeding on biological aspects of Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) was evaluated. Nymphs and adults of this predator were fed with Tenebrio molitor L. (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) pupae on Eucalyptus urophylla plants in the field or only with pupae of this prey in the laboratory. The development and nymphal survival, as well as the pre-oviposition period, number of egg masses, number, fertility and viability of eggs and the longevity of females of this predator were evaluated. The eucalyptus plants improved the development of P. nigrispinus. This demonstrates that this predator can present higher population growth with eucalyptus plants and T. molitor pupae than in the laboratory (controlled conditions) only with this prey. These plants can supply nutrients that can the population growth and efficiency of P. nigrispinus for biological control in eucalyptus plantations.

El control biológico de insectos con parasitoides podría tener éxito limitado sin entender el efecto de la temperatura sobre los enemigos naturales. El objetivo fue determinar el parasitismo, la viabilidad de los huevos y la razón sexual de Trichogramma exiguum y Trichogramma acacioi (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) para controlar los huevos de Heliothis virescens (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) después de dos generaciones sobre huevos de Anagasta kuehniella a 18, 20, 25, 30 y 33ºC. El aumento en temperatura favoreció el parasitismo de T. exiguum. La viabilidad de los huevos de T. exiguum osciló entre 70.1 y 97.1% y entre 81.5 a 98.4% para T. acacioi en los huevos de H. virescens. La razón sexual de T. acacioi fue constante en todas las temperaturas estudiadas con solamente hembras en la progenie. Criado en los huevos H. virescens, T. exiguum alcanzó las normas de control de calidad para la producción masiva. Trichogramma exiguum presentó un mayor parasitismo que T. acacioi a las temperaturas altas. No obstante, ambas especies presentaron bajo parasitismo de huevos de H. virescens

The biological control of insect pests using parasitoids may have limited success without an understanding of the effect of temperature on natural enemies. The objective was to determine the parasitism, egg viability and sex ratio of Trichogramma exiguum and Trichogramma acacioi (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) to control Heliothis virescens (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) eggs after two generations on eggs of Anagasta kuehniella at 18, 20, 25, 30 and 33ºC. The increase in temperature favored the parasitism of T. exiguum. The egg viability of T. exiguum ranged between 70.1 and 97.1% and from 81.5 to 98.4% for T. acacioi in H. virescens eggs. The sex ratio of T. acacioi was constant at all temperatures studied, with only females in the progeny. Trichogramma exiguum reared in H. virescens eggs met the standards of quality control for mass production. Trichogramma exiguum showed higher parasitism than T. acacioi at high temperatures. However, both species had low parasitism on H. virescens eggs.

O objetivo foi avaliar o parasitismo de ovos de Heliothis virescens em folhas das cultivares comerciais de algodoeiro de fibra branca (BRS 8H) e colorida (BRS Safira) por Trichogramma exiguum, Trichogramma pretiosum e Trichogramma atopovirilia.Trinta ovos da praga, depositados sobre folhas das respectivas cultivares, foram expostos a cada espécie do parasitóide por 48h, em condições controladas, nas quais foram mantidos até a emergência de seus descendentes. Entre as culturas, obteve-se o maior parasitismo na cultivar BRS 8H. T. atopovirilia e T. exiguum apresentaram maiores porcentagens de parasitismo, seguido por T. pretiosum. Os três parasitóides tiveram viabilidade de parasitismo acima de 90% e razão sexual de 0,79 a 1,0 em ambas as cultivares, mas com menores taxas para T. exiguum, seguido por T. atopovirilia. O número de descendentes por ovo de H. virescens foi semelhante entre as espécies de parasitóides com valores 1,69 a 1,9. De maneira geral, T. atopovirilia obteve o melhor desempenho em ambas as cultivares, diferenciando-se de T. pretiosum. Assim, o desempenho dessas espécies pode ser afetado pelas cultivares. Os resultados obtidos sugerem que diferenças entre plantas são as causas de resultados variáveis no parasitismo de Trichogramma na mesma cultura.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the parasitism of Heliothis virescens eggs on leaves of commercial cultivars of white (BRS 8H) and colored (BRS Safira) cotton fibers, by Trichogramma exiguum, Trichogramma pretiosum and Trichogramma atopovirilia. Thirty eggs of the pest were deposited on leaves of the respective cultivars, and exposed to each species of the parasitoid for 48 hours in controlled conditions, where they were kept until the emergence of their descendants. The parasitism rate was higher on BRS 8H cotton with better parasitism of T. atopovirilia and T. exiguum, followed by T. pretiosum. The parasitism viability was above 90%, and sexual ratio ranged from 0.79 to 1.00 on both cotton genotypes, but with lower values for T. exiguum, followed by T. atopovirilia. The number of descendants per parasitized egg of H. virescens was similar among parasitoid species, with values from 1.69 to 1.9. Overall, T. atopovirilia achieved better results on both cotton cultivars, differing from T. pretiosum. Thus, the performance of these species can be affected by cultivars. The results suggest that differences between plants are the causes of variation in the results of Trichogramma parasitism in the same culture.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi a confecção das tabelas de vida de fertilidade para cinco linhagens de Trichogramma pretiosum, em ovos do hospedeiro Tuta absoluta, nas temperaturas constantes e alternadas, utilizando-se os dados das características biológicas e da capacidade de parasitismo. Foram utilizados setecentos ovos, divididos em quarenta por repetição, para a condução dos tratamentos. A duração média de cada geração (T) para as linhagens de T. pretiosum, nas temperaturas constantes, apresentou uma relação inversa com a elevação térmica com exceção da linhagem L2. A duração média de cada geração (T) foi menor, para todas as linhagens, na temperatura de 30°C. A capacidade máxima de aumento da população medida pela taxa líquida de reprodução (Ro) ocorreu na temperatura de 25°C, para as linhagens L2, L5 e L6. Com exceção da linhagem L4, todas as demais apresentaram uma relação direta da razão infinitesimal de aumento (rm) com a elevação da térmica. A variação intraespecífica foi devida às características do ambiente no qual as linhagens foram encontradas.

The objective of this research was to construct a life table for five strains of Trichogramma pretiosum, in eggs of Tuta absoluta, for the constant and alternate temperatures, using the data of the biological characteristics and of the capacity of parasitism. The mean generation time (T), for in the constant temperatures, except for the strain L2, presented an inverse relationship with the thermal elevation for the other strains of T. pretiosum. The mean generation time (T) it was smaller, for all the strains, in the temperature of 30°C. The maximum capacity of increase of the population measured by Ro, happened at the temperature of 25°C, for the strains L2, L5 and L6. Except for the strain L4, all the others showed a direct relationship of the intrinsic rate of increase (rm) with the elevation of the temperature. It was due to environmental characteristics where the strains had been found.

Visando estudar o efeito da bactéria entomopatogênica Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) sobre fêmeas adultas de Trichogramma pratissolii e sua progênie, este trabalho foi realizado com diferentes isolados de Bt e Bt kurstaki misturados ao alimento fornecido para o parasitóide antes de parasitar ovos de Anagasta kuehniella. Para tanto, suspensões de seis isolados de Bt E-3, E-10, E-15, E-16, E-19, E-20 e o Bt kurstaki foram misturados em gotícula de mel (1:1), como fonte de alimento e mel puro como testemunha, e, em seguida, foram oferecidos simultaneamente cartelas com ovos do hospedeiro para o parasitismo. Foram utilizadas 20 repetições por tratamento. O experimento foi mantido em câmara climatizada a 25 ± 1ºC, UR 70 ± 10% e fotofase de 14h. Foram avaliados os parasitismos diários, totais e acumulados; sobrevivência; emergência e razão sexual da progênie. Os tratamentos não afetaram o parasitismo, razão sexual e a longevidade, porém em alguns tratamentos (E-3, E-10, E-16 e E-20) foi observado efeito indireto sobre a emergência da progênie, o que implicaria a necessidade de mais liberações massais do parasitóide para alcançar os resultados esperados. Por outro lado, a aceleração do parasitismo verificada em todos os tratamentos sugere que adultos de T. pratissolii, quando submetidos à pressão de algum fator externo tendem a parasitar o mais rápido possível para assegurar a sobrevivência da progênie. Portanto, a combinação Bt + T. pratissolii pode favorecer a atuação do parasitóide em campo, principalmente em casos em que é necessária uma rápida redução dos níveis populacionais da praga.

This work was carried out to detect at laboratory the possible side-effects provoked by Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) strains on egg parasitoid Thichogramma pratissolii and its progeny. Six strains of Bt E-3, E-10, E-15, E-16, E-19, E-20 and Bt kurstaki were assayed in honey drop to stimulate the feeding of the parasitoids in each treatment (1:1) and pure honey as check treatment and offered simultaneously displays with eggs of the host alternative Anagasta kuehniella. The experiment was maintained in a climatized chamber at 25 ± 1ºC, RH 70 ± 10% and photofase of 14hours. The survival, daily parasitism, accumulated parasitism and total parasitism and also the progeny's emergence and sexual ratio were analyzed. Bt isolates did not affect parasitism, sexual ratio and longevity, but some of them (E-3, E-10, E-16 e E-20) affected parasitoid progeny. In field conditions this could imply in more parasitoid liberations to the expected results. Otherwise, parasitism acceleration verified in all treatments suggest that when T. pratissolii adults pass on some extern pressure (stress) they parasitize as soon as possible to assure progeny survival. The interaction Bt + T. pratissolii may increase the parasitoid preformance in the field, mainly when a rapid decrease of pest population is desirable.

O objetivo desta pesquisa foi estudar as exigências térmicas de Trichogramma pretiosum e T. acacioi (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), parasitóides de Nipteria panacea (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), em ovos dos hospedeiros alternativos Anagasta kuehniella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) e Sitotroga cerealella (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) visando utilizar estes inimigos naturais em programas de controle biológico desta praga em pomares de abacate. T. pretiosum apresentou temperaturas base (Tb) de 10.70 e 10.75°C e constantes térmicas (K) de 151.83 e 160.04 graus-dia, sendo estes valores de 10.67 e 10.46°C e 158.50 e 155.46 graus-dia para T. acacioi em ovos de A. kuehniella e S. cerealella, respectivamente.

This research studied the thermal requirements of Trichogramma pretiosum and T. acacioi (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), parasitoids of Nipteria panacea (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), with eggs of the alternative hosts Anagasta kuehniella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and Sitotroga cerealella (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) aiming to use these natural enemies in biological control programs of this pest in avocado orchards. T. pretiosum needed 151.83 and 160.04 degree-days, above threshold of 10.70 and 10.75°C, while these values were 158.50 and 155.46 degree-days, above threshold of 10.67 and 10.46°C for T. acacioi when exposed to eggs of A. kuehniella and S. cerealella, respectively.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar o número ideal de Trichogramma pretiosum Riley a ser liberado em campo para o controle da traça-do-tomateiro Tuta absoluta (Meyrick). O experimento foi implantado em casa de vegetação, onde, 60 dias após o transplantio, plantas de tomate foram infestadas com 200 ovos do hospedeiro alternativo Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller), na proporção de 70% no terço superior das plantas, 24% no terço médio e 6% no terço inferior. Fêmeas de T. pretiosum foram liberadas nas proporções de 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 e 32 parasitóides por ovo do hospedeiro. Independentemente do terço da planta analisado, a proporção de 16 parasitóides por ovo apresentou os melhores resultados. Esta é a proporção mais próxima da ideal, para liberação em plantios comerciais de tomate estaqueado, visando o controle da traça-do-tomateiro.

The objective of this work was to estimate the ideal number of Trichogramma pretiosum Riley to be released in field for the tomato leafminer control Tuta absoluta (Meyrick). An experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, in which tomato plants with 60 days, after the transplantation, were infested with 200 eggs of Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller), an alternative host, in the subsequent ratios: 70% of eggs were put on the top of the plants, 24% on the medium height and 6% on the very bottom of the plants. Females of T. pretiosum were released following the ratios of 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 parasitoids per host egg. Independently of the three distinct plant parts (top, medium or bottom), the ratio of 16 parasitoids per host egg delivered the best results. This ratio value was closer to the ideal number for field releasing in commercial crop production of stalked tomato, aiming the tomato leafminer control.
