ABSTRACT The gingival cyst of the adult (GCA) is a rare odontogenic cyst, consisting of 0.3% of all odontogenic cysts. This case report, based on CARE guidelines for case reports, aims to present a case of a 52-year-old female patient with a symptomatic translucent nodule in the upper left anterior gingiva, measuring approximately 6mm. Excisional biopsy was performed, and the histological examination revealed multiple cystic cavities lined by the squamous epithelium of varying thickness with focal areas of nodular thickenings. The presence of clusters of cells with clear cytoplasm within epithelial thickenings was observed. PAS staining was negative in clear cells. The diagnosis of the GCA was established. Despite its rarity, GCA should be considered in the differential diagnosis of gingival lesions. Conservative surgical treatment proved to be effective, with no signs of recurrence. Resumo Introdução No Brasil, algumas cidades adotaram várias medidas que provavelmente tiveram um impacto positivo no controle da Covid-19. Objetivo Relatar a distribuição dos casos de Covid-19 no Brasil, no estado do Rio de Janeiro e na cidade de Niterói. Paralelamente, buscamos demonstrar as estratégias preventivas adotadas pela cidade de Niterói para o controle da Covid-19. Método Dados fornecidos pelo Ministério da Saúde e Fundação Municipal de Saúde de Niterói foram usados para relatar o número de casos e óbitos causados pela Covid-19. Para algumas análises, os dados foram agrupados por semana e normalizados para 100.000 habitantes. Resultados Até 18 de julho de 2020, o Brasil registrou 2.074.860 casos e 78.772 mortes e o estado do Rio de Janeiro registrou 135.230 casos e 11.919 mortes; ambos ainda apresentando curvas ascendentes para mortes por Covid-19. Em contrapartida, a taxa de novos óbitos/100.000 habitantes é consistentemente menor na cidade de Niterói. Estimamos que 712 mortes foram evitadas pelas medidas adotadas pela cidade de Niterói, em comparação com o que foi observado no Rio de Janeiro. Conclusão As medidas preventivas adotadas pela cidade de Niterói foram eficazes na redução tanto da disseminação do vírus quanto da taxa de óbitos. Portanto, esta discussão se mostra relevante para a tomada de decisões futuras durante o surto de Covid-19 no Brasil.

Abstract Background In Brazil, some local city government’s adopted several measures, which probably had a positive impact on COVID-19 control. Objective To report the distribution of COVID-19 cases in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro state and Niterói city. In parallel, we aimed to demonstrate the preventive strategies adopted by Niterói city. Method Data provided by the Brazilian Ministry of Health and Municipal Health Foundation of Niterói were used to report COVID-19 cases and deaths. For some analysis, data were grouped by week and normalized for 100,000 inhabitants. Results By July 18th, 2020, Brazil reported 2,074,860 cases and 78,772 deaths and Rio de Janeiro state registered 135,230 cases and 11,919 deaths; both still presenting ascendant curves for COVID-19 deaths. In contrast, the rate of new deaths per 100,000 inhabitants is consistently lower in Niterói city. Importantly, we estimated that 712 deaths were prevented by the measures adopted by Niterói city, in comparison to which was observed in Rio de Janeiro. Conclusion The early preventive measures adopted in Niterói city were effective in reducing both the viral spread and rate of deaths. In this regard, this discussion could be relevant for making future decisions during the COVID-19 outbreak in Brazil.

ABSTRACT Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a malignant tumor rarely found in the head and neck, representing about 1% of all malignancies. The main treatment for NPC is radiation therapy, which is often given in combination with chemotherapy. However, such treatment may lead to long‐term complications, including second primary tumors (SPTs) and osteoradionecrosis (ORN). Both complications have similar radiological characteristics, which can lead to erroneous diagnoses. This paper describes a case of a second primary tumor in a patient after 20 years of radiotherapy in the area where a previous extraction was performed, mimicking an osteoradionecrosis process.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to quantify damage and yield losses in lettuce parasitized by Meloidogyne javanica, as well as the growth characteristics of naturally cultivated field plants infested by this pathogen. The experimental area consisted of four seedbeds of 10.0x1.60 m cultivated with 160 plants in each, totaling 640 plants. The damages and yield loss were quantified in four evaluations (Ev1, Ev2, Ev3, and Ev4), with each evaluation corresponding to a cultivation cycle. The four plantings were made in the consecutive form. The fresh mass weight and dry mass weight (FMW and DMW, respectively), gall number (GN), and final population of the nematodes (FP) were evaluated. The population increase of M. javanica caused a reduction in the FMW and DMW in all evaluations. In Ev1 and Ev2, 100% of the plants were commercialized. In Ev3 and Ev4, 7% and 65% of the plants, respectively, could not be commercialized. The Ev4 was completely unviable since the produce had losses of U$ 7.42; U$ 23.19 and U$ 1,484.10 for the cultivation of 640; 2,000 and 128,000 plants, respectively. The economic threshold in Ev4 was 10,151 nematodes/plant or 109 galls/plant.

RESUMEN El objetivo de este trabajo fue cuantificar el daño agronómico en un cultivo de lechugas parasitadas por Meloidogyne javanica y caracterizar el crecimiento de plantas cultivadas en un campo infestado por este patógeno. El estudio se hizo en cuatro camas de 10.0 x 1.60 m cultivadas con 160 plantas en cada una, totalizando 640 plantas por cada ciclo de cultivo. Se hicieron cuatro tratamientos (Ev1, Ev2, Ev3 y Ev4), correspondientes a un ciclo de cultivo. Las cuatro plantaciones se realizaron de forma consecutiva y se seleccionaron 100 plantas al azar para cuantificar el efecto del nematodo en las lechugas. Los parámetros evaluados fueron peso fresco (PMF), peso seco (PMS), número de agallas (NG) y la población final de nematodos (PF). El aumento de la población de M. javanica provocó una reducción de PMF y PMS en todas las evaluaciones. En Ev1 y Ev2 se vendió el 100% de las plantas. En Ev3 y Ev4 hubo un 7% y un 65% de las plantas, respectivamente, que no pudieron venderse. El cuarto ciclo de cultivo (Ev4) resultó completamente inviable, ya que las pérdidas fueron de U $ 7,42; U $ 23,19 y U $ 1.484,10 para el cultivo de 640, 2.000 y 128.000 plantas, respectivamente. El umbral económico en Ev4 fue de 10.151 nematodos /planta o 109 agallas /planta.

ABSTRACT Despite the important role of coffee production in the economy of Espirito Santo, the second largest coffee producing state in Brazil, productivity is still below the Brazilian average. One of the factors that explain this low productivity is the presence of nematodes of the genus Meloidogyne. Contaminated seedlings are an important and efficient agent for disseminating nematodes. According to normative instruction no. 35 (IN 35), of 11/29/2012 of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA), the presence of Meloidogyne spp. in a single plant among a field-lot of seedlings condemns it, and the plants that compose that lot should be destroyed. In Espirito Santo, no evaluation has been carried out in nurseries covering the entire State for phytonematode detection. Therefore, the objective of this work was to carry out a nematological survey in nurseries to guide the nurserymen in relation to fulfilling IN 35 of MAPA, in addition to guiding them regarding the phytosanitary care during the production of their seedlings. The nurseries were evaluated in 19 municipalities located in both the north and the south of Espírito Santo. There were Meloidogyne spp. in evaluated samples.

RESUMO O declínio de goiaba é uma doença complexa causada pelo parasitismo de Meloidogyne enterolobii (Me), que predispõe a planta à podridão radicular causada por Fusarium sp. Três experimentos in vitro foram realizados com os seguintes objetivos: (i) selecionar a dosagem de Fluensulfone capaz de causar mortalidade de Me; (ii) verificar o efeito da Fluensulfone sobre Pochonia chlamydosporia e Trichoderma harzianum; (iii) avaliar o efeito de Pochonia chlamydosporia e Trichoderma harzianum em doses puras e em associação com Fluensulfone na mortalidade de M. enterolobii. Fluensulfone na dose de 2 L.ha-1 não teve efeito sobre os fungos. As doses associadas e puras dos tratamentos tiveram efeito significativo na mortalidade de Me. Um experimento de campo também foi realizado em um pomar de goiaba com ocorrência de declínio. Os seguintes tratamentos foram testados: Fluensulfone; P. chlamydosporia; P. chlamydosporia + Fluensulfone; T. harzianum; T. harzianum + Fluensulfone; Carbofurano e o controle. Todos os tratamentos reduziram a população de Me, uma vez que a eficiência relativa foi superior a 80%. O fluensulfone utilizado isoladamente ou em combinação com nematicidas biológicos proporcionou um aumento na produtividade de goiaba. A manutenção da baixa população de Me no campo é uma opção importante para aumentar a produtividade e reduzir as perdas sofridas pelos agricultores.

ABSTRACT Guava decline is a complex disease resulting from the parasitism by Meloidogyne enterolobii (Me), which predisposes the plant to root rot caused by Fusarium sp. Three in vitro experiments were carried out with the aim of: (i) selecting the Fluensulfone dosage capable of causing Me mortality; (ii) verifying the effect of Fluensulfone on Pochonia chlamydosporia and Trichoderma harzianum; (iii) evaluating the effect of Pochonia chlamydosporia and Trichoderma harzianum in pure doses and in association with Fluensulfone on Me mortality. Fluensulfone at 2 L.ha-1 had no effect on fungi. The associated and pure doses of treatments had a significant effect on Me mortality. A field experiment was also carried out in a guava orchard where decline occurred. The following treatments were tested: Fluensulfone; P. chlamydosporia; P. chlamydosporia + Fluensulfone; T. harzianum; T. harzianum + Fluensulfone; Carbofuran, and control. All treatments reduced Me population, since relative efficiency was higher than 80%. Fluensulfone used alone or in combination with biological nematicides provided an increase in guava productivity. Maintaining Me population low in the field is an important option for increasing productivity and reducing the losses suffered by farmers.

Resumo Com 119 espécies distribuídas em 19 gêneros, a maioria das espécies da subtribo Lychnophorinae é endêmica da Cadeia do Espinhaço no centro leste do Brasil, área caracterizada especialmente pelos campos rupestres, que são descritos como mosaicos vegetacionais em afloramentos rochosos que apresentam alto grau de endemismo. Este trabalho objetivou identificar padrões de distribuição, densidade de coleta, riqueza de espécies e viés de coletas. Foram identificados dez padrões de distribuição geográfica: Chapada Diamantina, Chapada dos Veadeiros e montanhas adjacentes, Pico da Aliança, Extensão da Cadeia do Espinhaço, Arco Centro-Sul de Minas Gerais, Cadeia do Espinhaço e Arco da Brasília, Disjunção Campos Rupestres e Restinga, Chapada Diamantina e Caatinga, Diagonal Noroeste-Sudeste e Triângulo Leste. Outras famílias de Angiospermas apresentam distribuição semelhante, principalmente no Espinhaço Meridional. A riqueza de espécies é maior em locais com alta intensidade de coleta, porém, o nordeste de Goiás mostra comportamento oposto. A análise de correlação de Spearman demonstrou forte correlação entre densidade de coleta e riqueza de espécies, apresentando modelo exponencial assintótico significativo para a variação total da riqueza de espécies. A análise de agrupamento apresentou cinco grupos correlacionados com cinco padrões de distribuição em Lychnophorinae.

Abstract With 119 species distributed in 19 genera, most species of the subtribe Lychnophorinae are endemic to the Espinhaço Range in central eastern Brazil. This region is characterized especially by the campos rupestres, a grassland mosaic associated with vegetation on rock outcrops, which display a high level of endemism. The present work aims to identify distribution patterns, collection density, species richness and research bias in collections. Ten geographic distribution patterns were identified: Chapada Diamantina, Chapada dos Veadeiros and adjacent mountains, Pico da Aliança, Extension of the Espinhaço Range, Central-South Arc of Minas Gerais, Espinhaço Range and Brasília Arc, Campos Rupestres and Restinga, Chapada Diamantina and Caatinga, Northwest-Southeast Diagonal and East Triangle. Other Angiosperm families present similar distribution, mainly in the Espinhaço Meridional, where higher collecting efforts are present. Species richness is higher in sites with higher collection intensity, however, the northeast of Goiás shows the opposite pattern. Spearman correlation analysis shows a strong correlation between collection density and species richness, with an exponential asymptotic model that is quite significant for the total variation of species richness. The cluster analysis presented five clusters correlated with five distribution patterns in Lychnophorinae.

Abstract The extensive marine biodiversity has proved to be a promising source of substances with biomedical potential. In this study, the cytotoxicity of the Brazilian octocoral Phyllogorgia dilatata (Gorgoniidae) was evaluated against two tumor cell lines and three bacterial strains. The methanol/dichloromethane crude extract presented no antibacterial activity up to the highest concentration tested (512 µg/mL), however it revealed a noteworthy antiproliferative effect against HCT-116 (80%) and MCF-7 (54%) cell lines at 50 μg/mL. Therefore, guided by the cytotoxic activity, a multistep chemical fractionation of the extract provided the subfraction 5 (PDPH2-5) with IC50 values of 3.18 and 17.80 μg/mL against HCT-116 and MCF-7, respectively. The LC-HRMS/MS analysis of PDPH2-5 showed ions of m/z 219.1742 and 219.1743, characterized as (E,E) and (Z,E) germacrone, after a LC-DAD-SPE/NMR analysis of the hexanic fraction and comparisons of NMR data with the literature. Previously reported assessments to the cytotoxic activity of the (E,E)-diastereoisomer disclosed higher IC50 values than that obtained for the PDPH2-5 fraction, suggesting, herein, a potentiated effect of the diastereoisomeric mixture. Such remark encourage further bioactivity studies with stereoisomer mixtures and reduce the urge for compound isolation.

Abstract To assess the impact of oral conditions on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of pediatric liver transplant candidates. This cross-sectional study included 60 children aged 13 to 48 months who were liver transplant candidates that attended the AC Camargo Cancer Center, São Paulo, Brazil. On the day of oral examinations, the children’s mothers were invited to answer two questionnaires; one related to children’s OHRQoL using the B-ECOHIS and another related to socioeconomic/demographic characteristics. Thereafter, a single, adequately trained dentist carried out children’s oral examinations for gingival inflammation (Silness-Löe index), dental plaque (Green-Vermillion Simplified index), dental caries (dmft index), developmental defects of enamel (DDE index), tooth discoloration, oral mucosal/lip alterations. The data collected also included socioeconomic/demographic characteristics and liver disease. The adjusted Poisson regression model was used to associate children’s socioeconomic/demographic characteristics and clinical conditions to the outcome. The adjusted regression model showed that children with untreated caries lesions (RR = 3.35, p < 0.0001) and tooth discoloration (RR = 1.74, p = 0.04) had poorer total B-ECOHIS scores. Dental discoloration and untreated caries lesions had a negative impact on the OHRQoL in pediatric liver transplant candidates.

RESUMO: O nematoide-das-galhas é um dos mais importantes problemas fitossanitários para o cafeeiro conilon, por reduzir a produtividade e ser de difícil manejo. Objetivou-se estudar a infectividade e os danos causados por M. incognita raça 1 na variedade de café conilon de maturação intermediária “Jequitibá Incaper 8122”. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, em DIC, com cinco repetições. Os clones que compõem a variedade “Jequitibá Incaper 8122” foram inoculados com 2.000 ovos + juvenis de segundo estádio de M. incognita raça 1. Plantas não inoculadas constituíram a testemunha. As avaliações foram realizadas 180 dias após a inoculação, sendo avaliados: altura da planta (ALT), diâmetro do caule (DCA), número de folhas (NFO), área foliar (AFO), número de ramos plagiotrópicos (NRP), número de nós (NN), teor de clorofila (CLO), massa seca da parte aérea (MSA), matéria fresca da raiz (MFR), população final (PFN) e fator de reprodução (FRE). O nematoide reduziu o NFO nos clones 208 e 209, NRP nos clones 201, 203, 207 e 208, NN nos clones 203, 207, 208 e 209, CLO nos clones 201, 204, 206, 207 e 209, MSA nos clones 201, 203, 204 e 205 e MFR nos clones 205 e 207. PFN e FRE de M. incognita raça 1 foram maiores nos clones 208, 201, 207 e 203; o clone 202 teve a PFN e a FRE igual a zero, apresentando-se imune ao nematoide. O clone 206 apresentou o menor valor de FRE entre os clones parasitados por M. incognita.

ABSTRACT: Root-knot nematode is one of the most important phytosanitary problems for Conilon coffee, as it reduces productivity and is difficult to handle. We aimed at studying the infectivity and damage caused by M. incognita race 1 in the “Jequitibá Incaper 8122” intermediate maturity coffee variety. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, in completely randomized design, with five replicates. The clones composing the variety “Jequitibá Incaper 8122” were inoculated with 2,000 eggs + second-stage juveniles of M. incognita race 1. Uninoculated plants were the control. Evaluations were performed 180 days after inoculation, considering the plant height (H), stem diameter (SD), number of leaves (NOL), leaf area (LA), number of plagiotropic branches (NPB), number of nodes (NN), chlorophyll content (CHLO), shoot dry matter (SDM), root fresh matter (RFM), final population (FNP), and reproduction factor (NRF). The nematode reduced NOL in clones 208 and 209, NRF in clones 201, 203, 207 and 208, NN in clones 203, 207, 208 and 209, CHLO in clones 201, 204, 206, 207 and 209, SDM in clones 201, 203, 204 and 205 and RFM in clones 205 and 207. M. incognita race 1 FNP and NRF were larger in clones 208, 201, 207 and 203. Clone 202 had FNP and NRF equal to zero, being immune to the nematode. Clone 206 presented the lowest NRF value among clones parasitized by M. incognita.

Resumo O Chaco é maior domínio de florestas contínuas da América do Sul e agrega distintas famílias botânicas com destaque à Leguminosae. A elevada riqueza e diversidade de membros de Leguminosae, sobretudo de Papilionoideae, aliada à distribuição de determinados gêneros comuns às florestas secas tem motivado a investigação deste interessante grupo de plantas nas formações chaquenhas do Brasil. Este estudo florístico-taxonômico fornece chave de identificação, descrições morfológicas, ilustrações, comentários taxonômicos e ambientes preferenciais das espécies de Papilionoideae ocorrentes no Chaco do Brasil. Confirmamos a ocorrência de 45 espécies, distribuídas em 21 gêneros. Os gêneros com maior número de espécies são Aeschynomene (10), Galactia (4), Indigofera (4), Stylosanthes (4) e Desmodium (3). Os demais encontram-se representados por duas ou uma espécie: Arachis (2), Centrosema (2), Macroptilium (2), Rhynchosia (2), Amburana (1), Ancistrotropis (1), Camptosema (1), Crotalaria (1), Discolobium (1), Dolichopsis (1), Geoffroea (1), Machaerium (1) e Muellera (1), Sesbania (1), Tephrosia (1) e Zornia (1). Espécies dos gêneros Muellera, Dolichopsis e Geoffroea são exclusivas de áreas secas da América do Sul. Aeschynomene magna é registrada pela primeira vez para o Brasil, e considerada endêmica do Chaco. Stylosanthes maracajuensis é o primeiro registro para o Chaco.

Abstract The Chaco is the largest area of continuous forests in South America and assembles different botanical families with emphasis on Leguminosae. The high richness and diversity of Leguminosae members, especially from Papilionoideae, associated with the distribution of certain genera common to dry forests, have motivated the investigation of this interesting group of plants in Brazilian Chaco formation. This floristic-taxonomic study provides an identification key, morphological descriptions, illustrations, taxonomic comments and preferred environments of Papilionoideae species occurring in the Brazilian Chaco. We confirmed the occurrence of 45 species belonging to 21 genera. The genera with the largest number of species are Aeschynomene (10), Galactia (4), Indigofera (4), Stylosanthes (4) and Desmodium (3). The others are represented by two or one species Arachis (2), Centrosema (2), Macroptilium (2), Rhynchosia (2), Amburana (1), Ancistrotropis (1), Camptosema (1), Crotalaria (1), Discolobium (1) Dolichopsis (1), Geoffroea (1), Machaerium (1) and Muellera (1), Sesbania (1), Tephrosia (1) and Zornia (1). Species of genera Muellera, Dolichopsis and Geoffroea are unique to dry areas of South America. Aeschynomene magna is registered for the first time in Brazil and considered endemic to the Chaco. Stylosanthes maracajuensis is recorded for the first time for Chaco areas.

ABSTRACT Rhizophora mangle L. (Rhizophoraceae) grows on aerial roots, which emerge above the water level, giving stands of this tree the characteristic “mangrove” appearance. To produce in situ and ex situ information for genetic conservation programs for this species, we investigated the genetic diversity and mating system of one R. mangle population. We sampled 30 adult trees and a total of 349 seeds in Northern Brazil. We genotyped all adult trees and seeds with four microsatellite loci. The average fixation index was -0.222 for adult trees and 0.030 for seeds. The multilocus outcrossing rate (t m =0.921) was significantly lower than unity (1.0). There was no substantial evidence of null alleles nor genotypic disequilibrium among the loci. The combined power to exclude the first parent probability was 0.921. The average coancestry coefficient (=0.180) was similar to that expected for half-sib progenies (=0.125). Thus, the number of adult trees necessary for seed collection to obtain progeny arrays with an effective size of 150 was estimated to be 62. In conclusion, this study produced important information for the management and conservation of R. mangle and will contribute to conservation and management programs for this species.

Abstract Oral mucositis is a painful condition that occurs in patients who have undergone haematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT) and has a huge impact on their quality of life. The objective of this study was to examine the extent to which interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) are associated with oral health quality of life among patients who underwent HSCT. A. C. Camargo Cancer Center patients were evaluated over 20 months at 4 different time-points: a) at patient admission (M1); b) on the day of infusion of HSC (M2); c) 12 and 20 days after the first day of the conditioning regimen for autologous and allogeneic transplantation, respectively (M3); and d) 30 days after the first day of the conditioning regimen (M4). Mucositis clinical evaluations were performed using World Health Organization (WHO) criteria. Oral health quality of life was measured using the Oral Health Impact Profile short form (OHIP-14), Oral Mucositis Quality of Life (OMQoL) and Patient-Reported Oral Mucositis Symptom (PROMS) scales. Correlations between clinical data and quality of life scores were examined. STATA 11.0 was used to perform the statistical analyses (5% level of significance). Eighty-two patients participated in the study; 62.2% were male, 28.05% had multiple myeloma, and the mean age was 48.49 years (SD 13.76). Higher scores (worse quality of life) were observed as mucositis scores increased, but the results were not significant. The OMQoL had a high correlation with OHIP-14 (0.8377), but the correlation between the PROMS scale and the OHIP-14 was lower (0.6643). Higher concentrations of IL-6 and TNF-α were associated with worse quality of life, according to all indices (p < 0.05). Oral mucositis was associated with quality of life scores (p < 0.01).

CC398 is a livestock-associated Staphylococcus aureus. However, it has also been isolated from humans with no previous contact with livestock. A surveillance of methicillin-resistant S. aureus colonisation among children attending public day care centres and hospitals in Niterói and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between 2011 and 2013, resulted in the isolation of six cases of CC398 from individuals with no previous exposure to livestock. These isolates showed a high frequency of the erm(C) gene (4/6, 66.7%) with induced resistance to clindamycin, and a relatively high frequency of SEs and lukS/lukF genes. These results suggest the emergence of a non-LA-CC398 in Brazil.

Resumo: Apresenta análise cognitiva dos registros de representação semiótica produzidos pelos alunos investigados durante atividade de modelagem, abordando a temática do manejo sustentável do açaí - devido ao fato de a cultura desse fruto ser prática predominante na região -, com o objetivo de identificar as dificuldades na aprendizagem de função polinomial do 1º grau. Nas análises realizadas, procurou-se conhecer também a compreensão crítico-social dos alunos diante de sua realidade. A pesquisa abrangeu 24 alunos do 1º ano do ensino médio modular de uma escola pública de comunidade ribeirinha de Muaná-Marajó-Pará. Verificamos como a realidade em que o aluno está inserido influencia positivamente seu aprendizado quando é realizado um trabalho que resgata seus saberes, tornando-o mais participativo e empenhado nas atividades que lhe são propostas.

Abstract: This paper presents a cognitive analysis of semiotic representation registers, produced by the investigated students during a modeling activity. Due to the fact that the culture of açaí is a predominant practice in the region, this study addresses the sustainable management of the fruit in order to identify difficulties in the learning of the first degree polynomial function. The analyses also sought to investigate the critical-social understanding of students before their reality. The study counted on 24 students attending the 1st grade of a public modular high school located in a riverside community in the municipality of Muaná-Marajó in the state of Pará. It can be concluded that the reality in which the student is inserted influences positively their learning when it considers their previous knowledge, and enables them to be more participative and engaged in the proposed activities.
