This paper investigates and analyses the concept of ba - or enabling context - in the fields of information science, management/business and information systems literature in order to understand its conceptual evolution, discussions, applications and expansion since its introduction in 1998 by Nonaka et al. (Nonaka and Konno, 1998; Nonaka et al., 2000; Nonaka and Toyama, 2002; Nonaka et al., 2006). The qualitative methodology is bibliographic and comprises - among others - the methods of citation analysis and content analysis. A resulting selection of 135 papers, 4 dissertations/theses and 4 books constituted the research's final database. Data analysis consisted of three flows of activities: data reduction, data displays (conceptual maps) and conclusion drawing/verification. The results point out to the identification of four major groups of enabling conditions - social/behavioral, cognitive/epistemic, informational and business/managerial - which can be singly or freely combined into different knowledge processes - creation, sharing/transfer and use - occurring in different levels of interactions - individual, group, organizational, inter-organizational. The conclusions suggest that the concept of ba and its underlying concepts are indeed sine qua non conditions for organizational knowledge creation and innovation processes, though ba is still both theoretically and empirically under-explored. Concerning the management of enabling contexts in knowledge organizations, the study revealed that the main arising challenges rely on the implementation and development of the issues comprised on the four groups of enabling conditions identified, most especially social/behavioral and business/managerial.

Este artigo aborda os resultados e proposições da investigação da gestão do conhecimento organizacional conduzida no período de 2001-2007. Este estudo longitudinal teve como único objectivo o de investigar e analisar os processos de “Gestão do Conhecimento” (GC) eficazmente implementados no universo das organizações trabalham ou têm influência fora das fronteiras nacionais. O principal objectivo foi o de investigar e analisar concepções, motivações, práticas, métricas e resultados dos processos de GC existentes em diferentes indústrias. O primeiro conjunto de estudos envolveu 20 casos descritos na literatura e serviu de base para a abordagem teórica designada “Proposição do Mapa Conceptual Integrativo da GC”. Esta proposta teórica foi posteriormente testada através de um estudo qualitativo em três organizações de grande dimensão do Brasil. Os resultados do estudo qualitativo validaram a proposição do mapa e levantaram questões para nova investigação no âmbito da implementação de um modelo de estratégia organizacional baseado no conhecimento.

This paper discusses the results and propositions of organizational knowledge management research conducted in the period 2001-2007. This longitudinal study had the unique goal of investigating and analyzing “Knowledge Management” (KM) processes effectively implemented in world class organizations. The main objective was to investigate and analyze the conceptions, motivations, practices, metrics and results of KM processes implemented in different industries. The first set of studies involved 20 world cases related in the literature and served as a basis for a theoretical framework entitled “KM Integrative Conceptual Mapping Proposition”. This theoretical proposal was then tested in a qualitative study in three large organizations in Brazil. The results of the qualitative study validated the mapping proposition and left questions for new research concerning the implementation of a knowledge-based organizational model strategy.

Este artigo se apresenta como uma proposta metodológica para demarcação conceitual de assuntos, tendo como objeto o fenômeno da "Gestão do Conhecimento". Para isso, utiliza quatro estratégias distintas e complementares, a seguir: avaliação das práticas organizacionais no âmbito da gestão do conhecimento, através de uma pesquisa em 20 empresas, entre privadas e públicas; análise manual dos assuntos cobertos em amostra da literatura existente; análise dos fenômenos sociais com temáticas relacionadas à gestão do conhecimento, e análise automática da freqüência de descritores - sob a forma de sintagmas nominais - em teses e dissertações da área. Através destas estratégias, busca-se explorar o gradiente conceitual que vem se desenhando no campo.

This article presents a methodological approach for conceptual mapping of subjects, and explores, as its own object, the "knowledge management" (KM) phenomenon. The method uses four different and complementary strategies: the evaluation of organizational practices, the manual subject analysis in the literature, the analysis of social phenomenon and the automatic analysis of the frequency of occurrence of noun-phrases in 5 thesis and dissertations having KM as its subject. With this four-handed strategy, it intends to draw a big picture of the subject of knowledge management.

O artigo relata as motivações, concepções, práticas gerenciais, ênfases, métricas, indicadores e resultados de programas de gestão do conhecimento (GC) em três empresas que atuam no Brasil. Os resultados sugerem que a expressão "gestão do conhecimento" seja ao mesmo tempo um paradoxo e uma impropriedade terminológica. O trabalho conclui também que os principais desafios impostos às organizações comprometidas com a GC são a gestão de mudanças culturais e comportamentais e a criação de um contexto organizacional favorável à criação, uso e compartilhamento da informação e do conhecimento.

The article describes the motivations, conceptions, managerial practices, priorities, metrics, indicators and results of knowledge management programs in three companies operating in Brazil. The results suggest that the expression "knowledge management" is at the same time a paradox and a terminological impropriety. The paper also concludes that the main challenges faced by companies are the management of cultural and behavioral changes and the creation of an organizational context which is favorable to the creation, use and sharing of information and knowledge.
