Abstract Droughts can lead to a water crisis, which can affect food production and cause socio-environmental impacts. This research aims to analyze the behavior of meteorological and hydrological droughts through the use of standardized drought indices, calculated from climate projections of the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios. The SPI and SPEI indices were used for meteorological droughts and the SSFI for hydrological droughts, based on discharge simulated by the SWAT and VIC hydrological models. For the current climate (1961 to 2005) the SPEI and SPI indices showed similar results regarding extreme drought events. For the future climate (2005 to 2099), the SPI presented similar drought results when considering the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios. The SPEI presented more divergent results when considering each scenario. In the future climate, the SSFI simulated extreme droughts for the scenarios, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5. Taking into account the behavior of drought indices for the same time scale, meteorological drought may have influenced hydrological drought, generating a reduction in river discharges almost simultaneously due to the small area of the basin considered. Resumo As secas podem acarretar crise hídrica, que pode afetar a produção de alimento e causar impactos socioambientais. Esta pesquisa objetiva analisar o comportamento das secas meteorológica e hidrológica por meio do emprego de índices de seca padronizados, calculados a partir de projeções climáticas dos cenários RCP4.5 e RCP8.5. Foram utilizados os índices SPI e SPEI para secas meteorológica e o SSFI para secas hidrológica, a partir de vazões simuladas pelos modelos hidrológicos SWAT e VIC. RESUMO Os simuladores de chuva são uma importante ferramenta para várias áreas das geociências. Os autores da maioria dos estudos publicados com simuladores de chuva tentam conseguir uma distribuição da precipitação o mais uniforme possível. Contudo, sendo tal muito difícil, são utilizados índices que visam aferir a maior ou menor uniformidade da precipitação na área da parcela em estudo. Um dos mais utilizados é o coeficiente de uniformidade de Christiansen. Neste trabalho, foram analisadas possíveis alterações da geometria da área molhada da parcela para melhorar a uniformidade da precipitação. Isso foi avaliado através da intensidade da precipitação e do coeficiente de uniformidade de Christiansen na área molhada da parcela. Os testes foram realizados utilizando dois modelos de bicos pulverizadores e diferentes pressões de operação. A geometria inicial da parcela era de 0,7 x 1,0 m (0.70 m2). ABSTRACT Rainfall simulators are an important tool in many areas of geosciences. The authors of most of the studies published with rainfall simulators try to get the most uniform distribution of precipitation as possible. However, since this is very difficult, indexes are used to assess the greater or lesser uniformity of precipitation in the plot area under study. One of the most used indexes is the Christiansen uniformity coefficient. In this work, changes in the geometry of the wetted area of the plot were analyzed to improve the uniformity of precipitation. This was evaluated through the intensity of precipitation and Christiansen uniformity coefficient in the wet area. The tests were carried out using two models of spray nozzles and different operating pressures. The initial plot geometry was 0.7 x 1.0 m (0.7 m2). The Christiansen uniformity coefficient results were classified as low, while the best performance in terms of precipitation uniformity was obtained at a pressure of 48.3 kPa. Non-uniform precipitation was observable near the outer limits of the plot. Resumo Mudanças na precipitação e na temperatura do ar podem produzir diferentes impactos no regime hidrológico, causando colapso no abastecimento de água. Este estudo focaliza nos impactos das mudanças climáticas na bacia do Rio Verde (VRB), uma bacia hidrográfica de cabeceira no sudeste do Brasil, localizada em Minas Gerais. O modelo hidrológico Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) foi calibrado e validado na bacia do Rio Verde. O downscaling (Modelo de Clima Regional Eta, com resolução de 20 km) de três Modelos de Circulação Global (CanESM2, HadGEM2-ES e MIROC5) foram usados no VIC com dados históricos (1961-2005) e em três intervalos de tempo (2011- 2040, 2041-2070 e 2071-2099), nos cenários RCPs 4.5 e 8.5. Os cenários foram usados como entrada no modelo hidrológico após a correção do viés. O modelo hidrológico (VIC) apresentou desempenho estatístico satisfatório na calibração e validação, com CNS variando de 0,77 a 0,85 para as vazões diárias e mensais; no entanto, superestimou alguns fluxos de pico e subestimou os de recessão. A média do conjunto de modelos prevê aumentos da temperatura média mensal mínima e máxima no final do século. O Eta-CanESM2 indicou maiores temperaturas, principalmente para RCP8.5 no final do século, enquanto Eta-HadGEM2-ES apresentou a maior redução na precipitação para RCP4.5 no início do século e para RCP8.5 no final do século, impactando negativamente na evapotranspiração e vazão. Entre os Modelos Climáticos Regionais (MCRs), o Eta-MIROC5 apresentou pequenas alterações nos componentes do ciclo hidrológico. Este estudo sugere que Modelos de Circulação Global representam incertezas adicionais, que devem ser consideradas na avaliação do impacto das mudanças climáticas.

Abstract Changes in precipitation and air temperature may produce different impacts on the hydrological regime, compromising water supply. This study focuses on climate change impacts in the Verde River Basin (VRB), a tropical headwater basin in southeast Brazil, located in the state of Minas Gerais. The Variable Infiltration Capacity model (VIC) was calibrated and validated in the Verde River Basin. The downscaling (Eta Regional Climate Model, at 20-km resolution) of three Global Circulation Models (CanESM2, HadGEM2-ES and MIROC5) were used to drive the VIC for a historical baseline (1961-2005) and three time-slices (2011-2040, 2041-2070 and 2071-2099), under RCPs 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios. The scenarios were used as input in the hydrological model after bias correction. The hydrological model (VIC) showed satisfactory statistical performance in calibration and validation, with CNS varying from 0.77 to 0.85 for daily and monthly discharges; however, it overestimated some peak flows and underestimated the recession flows. Multi-model ensemble means predict increases of the minimum and maximum monthly average temperature for the investigated area at the end of the century. The Eta-CanESM2 indicated greater warming, mainly for RCP8.5 at the end the century, whereas Eta-HadGEM2-ES showed higher reduction in the precipitation for RCP4.5 at the beginning of the century and for RCP8.5 at the end the century, negatively impacting the evapotranspiration and discharge. Among the Regional Climate Models (RCMs), the Eta-MIROC5 showed minor changes in the components of the hydrological cycle. This study suggests that Global Circulation Models represent an additional uncertainty, which should be accounted for in the climate change impact assessment.

Resumo As mudanças climáticas no século XXI é uma realidade inconteste. Diversos efeitos e impactos vêm sendo registrados em várias regiões do planeta. Este trabalho tem por objetivo avaliar a associação do modelo hidrológico MHD-INPE ao modelo atmosférico Eta/CPTEC, a fim de simular o impacto de mudanças climáticas na Bacia Hidrográfica do Ribeirão Jaguara, localizada no sul do estado de Minas Gerais. Para tal fim, foram utilizados dois cenários (RCP4.5 e RCP8.5) de três modelos globais (HadGEM2-ES, MIROC5 e CanESM2), regionalizados pelo modelo Eta. Os resultados da calibração e validação mostraram uma boa performance MHD-INPE em simular a vazão da BHRJ. Após a correção de viés, as saídas dos cenários foram usadas como entrada no MHD-INPE. As projeções climáticas corrigidas dos cenários resultaram em predominante redução da precipitação ao longo do século. Os resultados das projeções da temperatura mostraram aumento consensual por parte dos modelos climáticos, em ambos os cenários. As estatísticas da curva de permanência das vazões advindas das simulações climáticas mostraram um bom desempenho do MHD-INPE na simulação do clima presente.

Abstract Climate change in the 21st century is an undisputed reality. Several effects and impacts have been registered in society in several regions of the planet. This work objective is to evaluate an association of the hydrological model MHD-INPE with the atmospheric model Eta/CPTEC to simulate the impact of climate change in the Jaguara Creek Basin, located in the south of the state of Minas Gerais. For this purpose, two scenarios (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5) of three global climatic models downscaled by the Eta model (HadGEM2-ES, MIROC5 and CanESM2) were used. The results of the calibration and validation shows a good performance of the MHD-INPE model in simulating the JCR daily discharge. The results of the scenarios were used as input to the MHD-INPE model after bias correction. Regarding the corrected climate projections, they resulted in a predominant reduction of the rainfall throughout the 21st century. The results of the projections of temperature showed an increase through the climatic models in both scenarios. The statistical of the flow duration curve (FDC) resulting from the simulations of the Eta model showed a good performance of the MHD-INPE in the simulation of the baseline period.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os impactos das mudanças climáticas nas vazões mensais da bacia hidrográfica do rio Verde, localizada na bacia hidrográfica de cabeceira do rio Grande. Para este propósito, os modelos hidrológicos SWAT e VIC foram usados para simular a vazão mensal sob os cenários RCP4.5 e RCP8.5, obtidos pelos Modelos Climáticos Regionais Eta-HadGEM2-ES, Eta-CanESM2 e Eta-MIROC5 no clima presente (1961- 2005) e em três intervalos de clima (2011-2040, 2041-2070 e 2071-2099). No final do século, o Eta-HadGEM2-ES apresentou maior redução da precipitação em ambos os cenários radiativos, com uma redução anual de 17,4% (RCP4.5) e 32.3% (RCP8.5), enquanto o Eta-CanESM2 indicou maior aquecimento, com um aumento anual de 4,7 °C e 10,2°C para RCP4.5 e RCP8.5, respectivamente. Assim como as mudanças de precipitação, o Eta-HadGEM2-ES também mostrou maiores impactos na vazão sob o RCP4.5 no primeiro intervalo de clima (2011-2040), com redução anual de 58,0% para ambos os modelos hidrológicos, e para o cenário RCP8.5 no final do século (2071-2099), com redução anual de 54,0 (modelo VIC) e 56,8% (modelo SWAT). Na vazão mensal, as entradas do Eta-HadGEM2-ES e o Eta-CanESM2 indicaram queda no cenário RCP8.5 até o final do século, variando de 7,2 a 66,3% (modelo VIC) e 37,0 a 64,7% (modelo SWAT). Em geral, o Eta-MIROC5 apresentou o contrário em termos de direção nas simulações com os dois modelos hidrológicos no final do século. Efeitos combinados de modelos climáticos, estruturas de modelos hidrológicos e cenários de mudanças climáticas devem ser considerados nas avaliações de incertezas dos impactos das mudanças climáticas.

Abstract This study assessed the impact of climate change on monthly streamflow in the Verde River Basin, located in the Grande River Basin headwater. For this purpose, the SWAT and VIC hydrological models were used to simulate the monthly streamflow under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios, obtained by Regional Climate Models Eta-HadGEM2-ES, Eta-CanESM2 and Eta-MIROC5 in the baseline period (1961-2005) and three time-slice (2011-2040, 2041-2070, and 2071-2099) inputs. At the end of the century, the Eta-HadGEM2-ES showed larger decrease of precipitation in both radiative scenarios, with an annual reduction of 17.4 (RCP4.5) and 32.3% (RCP8.5), while the Eta-CanESM2 indicated major warming, with an annual increase of 4.7 and 10.2°C under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5, respectively. As well as precipitation changes, the Eta-HadGEM2-ES also showed greater impacts on streamflow under RCP4.5 for the first time-slice (2011-2040), with an annual decrease of 58.0% for both hydrological models, and for the RCP8.5 scenario by the end the century (2071-2099), with an annual reduction of 54.0 (VIC model) and 56.8% (SWAT model). Regarding monthly streamflow, the Eta-HadGEM2-ES and Eta-CanESM2 inputs indicated decrease under the RCP8.5 scenario by the end the century, varying from 7.2 to 66.3 % (VIC model) and 37.0 to 64.7% (SWAT model). In general, Eta-MIROC5 presented the opposite in terms of direction in the simulations with both hydrological models at the end of the century. Combined effects of climate models, hydrological model structures and scenarios of climate change should be considered in assessments of uncertainties of climate change impacts.

Resumo Previsões de vazão bem-sucedidas dependem de uma adequada avaliação de desempenho do modelo hidrológico. Neste estudo, as respostas hidrológicas foram comparadas usando dois modelos hidrológicos, físico-baseados e semi-distribuidos, Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) e Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC), utilizando dados de entrada da bacia hidrográfica do rio Verde, localizada ao sul do estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. Este é um estudo de uma das mais importantes regiões hidrográficas de cabeceiras do Brasil (Serra da Mantiqueira). Ambos os modelos foram adequados para simulação da vazão, sendo os valores de R2 (coeficiente de determinação) e de NSE (Nash-Sutcliffe) superiores a 0,8, NSELog superiores a 0.35 (Eficiência Nash-Sutcliffe do logarítimico dos valores de vazão) e PBIAS (desvio percentual) menor que 25%. A integração da avaliação de desempenho dos modelos SWAT e VIC pode ser útil em diferentes estudos de avaliação dos recursos hídricos. Portanto, a partir deste estudo mais investigações devem ser conduzidas usando vários modelos hidrológicos e cenários de mudanças climáticas e de uso e cobertura da terra, na região.

Abstract Successful streamflow forecasts depend on an adequate performance evaluation of the hydrological model. In this study, the hydrological responses were compared using two hydrological models, physic-based and semi-distributed, Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC), using input data from the Verde River Watershed, located in the Minas Gerais state in southern Brazil. This is a study of one of the most important headwater watershed regions of Brazil (Mantiqueira Range). Both models were suitable for streamflow simulation, with values of R2 (determination coefficient) and NSE (Nash-Sutcliffe) higher than 0.8, NSELog higher than 0.35 (Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency of the logarithmic values of discharge) and PBIAS (percentage deviation) less than 25%. The integration of SWAT and VIC models can be useful in different water-resource assessment studies. Therefore, based upon this study further investigations should be conducted using various hydrological models and climate, land-use and land-cover changes scenarios in the region.

RESUMO Nos últimos anos, as preocupações quanto aos impactos do desmatamento da vegetação ripária nos recursos hídricos criaram tensões sociais e políticas no Brasil. Esta pesquisa analisou os componentes hidrológicos simulados de uma bacia hidrográfica de cabeceira de 6,76 km2 com diferentes larguras de vegetação ripária. As respostas hidrológicas da Bacia Hidrográfica Lavrinha (BHL) foram simuladas utilizando o Distributed Hydrology Soil Vegetation Model (DHSVM) que foi forçado usando dados meteorológicos de uma estação (2005-2010). Os cenários de cobertura do solo em que o percentual da Mata Atlântica foi aumentado do controle resultaram em mudanças nas componentes hidrológicas na bacia hidrográfica devido ao incremento da evapotranspiração e intercepção da precipitação e redução do escoamento total e escoamento superficial. A relação escoamento base/escoamento total aumentou, sugerindo que a vegetação ripária desempenha um papel importante na recarga de água subterrânea. A modelagem dos componentes hidrológicos, associada aos cenários de larguras ripárias, como o processo utilizado para este estudo, pode ser uma ferramenta útil para as estratégias de tomada de decisão referente à gestão de bacias hidrográficas.

ABSTRACT In recent years, concerns regarding the impacts of deforestation of riparian vegetation on water resources have created social and political tensions in Brazil. This research analyzed simulated hydrologic components of a 6.76 km2 headwater watershed with different widths of riparian vegetation. Lavrinha Watershed (LW) hydrological responses were simulated using the Distributed Hydrology Soil Vegetation Model (DHSVM), which was forced using meteorological data from one station (2005-2010). Land cover scenarios where the percent land cover of Atlantic Forest was increased from the control resulted in changes in hydrologic components in the watershed due to increased evapotranspiration and rainfall interception and reduced runoff and overland flow. The base flow/runoff relationship has increased, suggesting that riparian vegetation plays an important role in groundwater recharge. Modeling of hydrologic components linked to riparian buffer scenarios, such as the process used in this study, can be a useful tool for decision-making strategies regarding watershed management.

ABSTRACT The scarcity of field data to develop soil maps through a pedological survey is one of the main limitations to using distributed hydrological models, especially in small and medium-sized watersheds. The aim of this study was to compare a distributed hydrological model prediction to a soil map based on a pedological survey and a moisture zone map obtained using the Height Above the Nearest Drainage - HAND model. The Distributed Hydrology Soil Vegetation Model - DHSVM, which is a physically-based and distributed hydrological model, was applied to a mountainous watershed, located in the region of the Mantiqueira Range in the south of Minas Gerais in southeastern Brazil, and was compared to both maps mentioned above, taking the soil map developed by the pedological survey as a reference. Daily weather and streamflow data-sets were used for DHSVM calibration and validation using the two different maps (soil and moisture zone maps) as inputs. In both simulations, the DHSVM performed well, with outputs indicating a good relationship between topographical and hydrological characteristics from the two types of maps. Thus, the moisture zone map obtained by the HAND model can also be successfully used in distributed hydrological modeling, especially for mountainous regions in southeastern Brazil.

Este trabalho tem por objetivo o estudo dos impactos das mudanças climáticas na bacia de cabeceira Lavrinha, localizada na Serra da Mantiqueira, Sudeste do Brasil. Os impactos oriundos das mudanças climáticas (cenário RCP 8.5) no escoamento da bacia hidrográfica Lavrinha foram analisados com base no modelo "Distributed Hydrology Soil Vegetation Model" (DHSVM), forçado com as condições climáticas simuladas para este cenário futuro de mudanças climáticas. Estas simulações, por sua vez, foram geradas pelo modelo climático regional Eta acoplado ao Modelo Climático Global (MCG) HadGEM2-ES, nos períodos de 2011-2040, 2041-2070 e 2071-2099. Os resultados deste estudo mostraram que a vazão é bastante sensível ao aumento da temperatura e diminuição da precipitação, ambos projetados para o cenário RCP 8.5. A simulação hidrológica projetou uma redução na vazão mensal entre 20 e 77% ao longo do século XXI (2011 a 2099), correspondendo a reduções drásticas no escoamento e, consequentemente, na capacidade de produção de água da região.

ABSTRACT Climate change impacts need to be considered in water resource planning. This work aims to study of the impacts climate change on Lavrinha headwater watershed, located in the Mantiqueira Range, southeastern Brazil. The impacts from climate change (RCP 8.5 scenario) in the Lavrinha watershed runoff were analyzed based on the "Distributed Hydrology Soil Vegetation Model" (DHSVM), forced with the climate simulated for this future climate change scenario. These simulations, in turn, were generated by the Eta regional climate model coupled to Global Climate Model (GCM) HadGEM2-ES for the 2011-2040, 2041-2070 and 2071-2099 periods. The results of this study showed that the runoff is very sensitive to rising temperatures and reduced precipitation, both projected for the RCP 8.5 scenario. The hydrological simulation projected a reduction in the monthly streamflow between 20 and 77% over the twenty-first century (2011-2099), corresponding to drastic reductions in the runoff behavior and consequently in the water production capacity of the region.

Cada vez mais são necessários programas de monitoramento da qualidade e quantidade da água como subsídios para avaliar as condições dos mananciais e, além disso, propiciar informações para a tomada de decisão com relação ao gerenciamento dos recursos hídricos. Este estudo analisou a qualidade e quantidade da água na microbacia do Ribeirão dos Macacos, afluente do rio Paraíba do Sul, Estado de São Paulo, por meio do monitoramento dos parâmetros: temperatura, pH, condutividade e oxigênio dissolvido, em cinco pontos da microbacia. As medições de vazão e altura da lâmina d' água durante os períodos seco e úmido dos anos de 2010/2011, permitiram obter a "curva chave" em quatro pontos de monitoramento da qualidade da água e reconstruir as séries de vazões para estes períodos. Os resultados das análises mostraram que há um indicativo de mudanças nos parâmetros de qualidade da água devido às práticas conservacionistas adotadas. O parâmetro temperatura da água foi o mais influenciado pela sazonalidade da vazão. Diversos fatores físicos podem ter contribuído na correlação dos outros parâmetros com a vazão principalmente as diferentes ações de recuperação ambiental implantadas na área deste estudo e que visam uma maior sustentabilidade dos recursos hídricos.

Monitoring programs of water quality and quantity are necessary to provide subsidies to assess the conditions of the watersheds and for decision making regarding to the management of water resources. This study analyzed the quality and quantity of waters of the Macacos stream watershed, a tributary of the Paraíba do Sul river, in São Paulo State, by monitoring the parameters: temperature, pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen at five sites in the watershed. The measurements of flow and height of water depth during dry and wet seasons of 2010 and 2011 allowed the construction of the "rating curve" in four points of water quality monitoring and to reconstruct the series of water flow in these seasons. The analysis results showed that there is indication of changes in water quality parameters due to the conservation practices adopted. The water temperature parameter was the most influenced by the seasonal variation in runoff. Several physical factors may have influenced the correlation of the other parameters with runoff, especially the different environmental recovery actions implemented in the study to achieve the sustainability of the water resources.
