Abstract Understanding the dynamic behavior of soils is essential to the study of the influence of seismic loads on the instability of submarine slopes, an important issue in Brazil and other countries. The shear modulus and the damping ratio are two fundamental parameters for the study of this behavior. Determining these parameters for Speswhite kaolin clay is the object of the present study using resonant column tests and dynamic centrifuge tests with accelerometers and pairs of bender elements. The curves obtained in the laboratory are compared with empirical curves and comparable data in the literature. Good agreement was observed between experimental data and the empirical prediction for the degradation curve of the normalized shear modulus. The damping curve for very low strains, obtained with resonant column tests, was consistent with the empirical curve. Abstract: Introduction: The undergraduate medical course of the State University of Londrina was the second in Brazil to adopt an integrated curriculum and Problem-Based Learning (PBL). Despite its innovative curriculum, which became a reference for other schools, new assessments showed the need to reform it. Experience Report: Systematic course evaluations showed some issues: difficulties in adaptation of new students attending the first year; disorganized sequence of contents throughout the course; teachers’ lack of motivation for activities from first to the fourth years; need to include new contents; and deterioration of the methodology (PBL) in third and fourth years. A wide collective effort for curricular reform was initiated, which led to important changes, such as: a more welcoming first year, by including mentoring and activities for the leveling of basic knowledge; chronological reorganization of contents; redesign of modules around great areas of knowledge or related specialties; adoption of new and more motivating active learning and teaching methodologies, and the inclusion of new topics/trends. Discussion: The adoption of other active learning and teaching methodologies present strategic advantages in replacement for PBL. Team-Based Learning (TBL) is a more structured method than PBL, so it can help newcomers to adapt to the first year and make it easier to implement active methodologies in a context of teacher shortage. Case-Based Learning (CBL) generates higher motivation and can be more effective to foster the development of clinical reasoning skills in the preclinical years. Conclusion: The new curriculum, incorporating the changes described above, started in 2022. Further evaluations will show whether the changes will improve the course in terms of adaptability, motivation and learning outcomes. Resumo: Introdução: O curso de graduação em Medicina da Universidade Estadual de Londrina foi o segundo do Brasil a adotar currículo integrado e Aprendizagem Baseada em Problemas (PBL). Apesar de seu currículo inovador ter servido de referência a outras escolas, avaliações recentes mostraram a necessidade de reforma. Relato de experiência: As avaliações sistemáticas do curso indicaram os seguintes problemas: dificuldade de adaptação dos ingressantes à primeira série; desorganização da sequência de conteúdos ao longo do curso; falta de motivação docente para as atividades da primeira à quarta série; necessidade de incluir tópicos obrigatórios e novas tendências; e desgaste da metodologia (PBL) a partir da terceira série. Um amplo trabalho de reforma curricular foi iniciado, baseado na construção coletiva, culminando em mudanças, como: o desenho de uma primeira série mais acolhedora por meio da inclusão de nivelamento de ciências básicas e mentoria; a reorganização cronológica dos conteúdos; o redesenho dos módulos, agora organizados ao redor de grandes áreas ou especialidades afins; a adoção de metodologias ativas mais motivadoras; e a inclusão de novos conteúdos. Discussão: A adoção de novas metodologias ativas em substituição à PBL em alguns momentos apresenta vantagens estratégicas. Abstract Dynamic soil parameters such as the shear modulus suffer degradation while damping in soil increases under dynamic loading. These can be determined from various tests such as element tests, field tests and centrifuge experiments. Most of the studies about dynamic soil characterization have focused on evaluating these parameters assuming horizontal ground conditions without considering the effect of static shear stresses induced by ground inclination. This paper presents a dynamic centrifuge test conducted on a layered gentle slope comprising clay and sand, to obtain experimental data in terms of shear modulus and damping for various shear strains. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) was employed to measure the displacements and to calculate accelerations due to seismic loading at various depths throughout the slope model. The results suggest that the static shear stress caused by the profile inclination causes a more pronounced degradation of the shear modulus when compared to flat ground conditions. Moreover, the damping during the centrifuge test exhibited larger values than expected, following a similar behavior observed in other experimental programs. Abstract Pain is common in orthodontic treatment, is subject to individual variation, and is associated with anxiety and stress, which can potentially become catastrophizing. The aim of the present study was to determine the variability of pain response after the insertion of orthodontic separators and to assess the association of pain levels with dental anxiety, catastrophizing, tooth sensitivity, and genetic expression of cytokines. To this end, 70 patients of both genders were divided into two equal groups according to the elastomeric separator used: G1 (Dentaurum) and G2 (Orthometric). Two separators were inserted in the mesial and distal sides of the lower right first molar. Participants were instructed to rate the level of pain at T0 (before insertion), T1 (just after insertion), and T2 (24 hours after insertion) on a visual analog scale. The gingival crevicular fluid was collected at T0 and T2. The levels of anxiety, catastrophizing, tooth sensitivity, and cytokine expression were also assessed. Statistical analysis was performed with the Fisher-Freeman-Halton, chi-squared, Spearman’s correlation, and dependent and independent t tests (α=5%). Pain intensity was higher at T2 than at T1, in both groups (P<.05). An association was established (P<.05) between pain intensity at T1 and catastrophizing, and at T2 with anxiety and catastrophizing. Within-group differences in cytokine expression were found between T0 and T2. There was no correlation between cytokine expression and pain levels, anxiety, catastrophizing, and sensitivity at T2. Abstract Soft ground improvement techniques have evolved substantially in Brazil in recent years. However, their application in soft and very soft clays requires a good understanding of the fundamentals of ground improvement techniques suited to the problem as well as the actual field behavior when implemented on a real scale. This paper describes some of the most widely used ground improvement techniques in the context of very soft clays in Brazil. The techniques described in the paper use prefabricated vertical drains (PVD) such as vacuum preloading; or combine PVD and rigid inclusion, such as CPR grouting; or are purely column-like elements such as piled embankments (including those executed with the deep mixing technique, DSM); or combine column-like elements with the drainage function, such as stone columns and geosynthetic encased columns; or use cementitious binders such as shallow soil mixing. The paper reference condition is a soft clay foundation in which no strengthening is implemented, such as, an embankment with basal reinforcement or soft clay with vertical prefabricated drains, or the use of vacuum preloading to speed up the consolidation rate. The applications of the ground improvement techniques are illustrated by case histories, numerical analyses, or physical models. Different types of measurements are used to evaluate the performance of each technique, including settlements, horizontal displacements, excess pore pressures, embankment applied stresses, stress concentration factors, and clay strength following the ground treatment. The settlement improvement factor β, the ratio between the settlements for untreated and treated conditions, is shown to be a suitable parameter to assess the degree of improvement imposed in the soft foundation by ranking the various methods in increased order of strengthening effect.

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this study was to test the null hypothesis that there is no difference at the midpalatal suture opening after rapid maxillary expansion (RME) using Expander with Differential Opening (EDO), Hyrax-type and Haas-type expanders. Methods: Occlusal radiographs of 52 patients (19 males and 33 females; average age= 9.46?1.20 years) treated with RME were divided into three groups, according to the expander used: EDO (n=17), Hyrax-type (n=21) and Haas-type (n=14). The evaluated variables were: A) Distance between the maxillary central incisors at the incisal edge; B) Distance between the alveolar ridges at the midpalatal suture; C) Suture opening at 10-mm distance from the crest to posterior, at the midpalatal suture; D) Suture opening at 20-mm distance from the crest to posterior, at the midpalatal suture; and E) Suture opening at 30-mm distance from the crest to posterior, at the midpalatal suture. To assess the normality of variables, the Shapiro-Wilk test was performed. For intergroup comparison, ANOVA with a significance level of 5% was used. Results: At the region A, Hyrax-type (4.66 mm) and EDO (4.87 mm) groups presented larger openings than the Haas-type group (3.43 mm). In regions B and C, EDO showed a statistically significant greater opening than the Haas-type group. In region D, a smaller opening of the midpalatal suture was observed in the Haas-type group, compared to the Hyrax-type and EDO groups. Conclusions: EDO and Hyrax-type produced greater immediate skeletal effects, compared with Haas-type, but these differences were about 1 mm and might not be clinically significant. RESUMO Objetivo: O objetivo do presente estudo foi testar a hipótese nula de que não existe diferença na abertura da sutura palatina mediana após a expansão rápida da maxila (ERM) usando os expansores Diferencial, tipo Hyrax e tipo Haas. Métodos: Radiografias oclusais de 52 pacientes (19 do sexo masculino e 33 do sexo feminino; idade média: 9,46 ? 1,20 anos) tratados com ERM foram divididas em três grupos, de acordo com o tipo de expansor usado: Diferencial (n = 17), tipo Hyrax (n = 21) e tipo Haas (n = 14). Abstract The test sites analyzed here consist of clay deposits located in the Jacarepaguá Lowlands in Rio de Janeiro, characterized by high plasticity, high compressibility and low undrained shear strength. The deposits are made up of lightly overconsolidated aged clays, montmorillonite being the predominant clay mineral. Soft clay deposits are usually superficial, with thicknesses generally varying between 6 m and 17 m and geologically recent and originated from marine regressions and transgressions, that occurred between 6000 and 3500 years ago. The objective of this study is to analyze a large database of undrained shear strength measurements obtained by 461 vane tests performed at 15 different sites. In general, most of the data correspond to very soft clays, with undrained shear strength values lower than 25 kPa. The undrained shear strength measurements are correlated with plasticity index and with maximum excess pore pressure, measured with piezocone tests. The method for estimating the undrained shear strength su(DT) of soil from the excess pore pressure generated during piezocone dissipation tests proposed by Mantaras et al. (2015) was validated against the vane test database.

Resumo Os objetivos do presente estudo foram comparar e avaliar a estabilidade do tratamento precoce da mordida aberta anterior (MAA) com diferentes dispositivos. A amostra inicial foi composta por 99 pacientes randomizados em quatro grupos experimentais: BS - esporões colados; CC - mentoneira; FPC - grade palatina fixa; RPC - grade palatina removível. Análise cefalométrica foi realizada para avaliar os dados do período inicial (T1), final do tratamento (T2) e 2 anos após tratamento (T3), sendo a variável overbite o desfecho principal. Em T3, após perdas de seguimento, haviam 63 indivíduos, sendo BS (n=15; overbite 0.19 mm; 11.54 anos; 10 Feminino (F)/5 Masculino (M)); CC (n=11; overbite -0.19 mm; 11.41 anos; 8 F/3 M); FPC (n=21; overbite 1.23 mm; 11.44 anos; 15 F/6 M) e; RPC (n=16; overbite 0.73 mm; 11.67 anos; 6 F/10 M). Comparações das alterações nas variáveis dentoesqueléticas e abandono de hábitos bucais deletérios durante o tempo de acompanhamento foram estatisticamente analisados com p<.05. Medidas esqueléticas lineares mandibulares e componentes verticais aumentaram gradualmente com a idade, principalmente com o surto de crescimento puberal e estabelecimento da dentição permanente no pós-tratamento. O overbite foi significantemente melhorado durante o tratamento, permanecendo estável com alterações positivas. A extrusão dos incisivos impactou na correção da MAA e estabilidade nos 4 grupos, que registraram uma melhora de 1.15 mm no pós-tratamento (T3-T2). Com suas limitações, todos dispositivos experimentais foram efetivos e mostraram resultados estáveis no tratamento precoce da MAA, sendo que a FPC apresentou a maior correção da MAA e o menor índice de desistência.

Abstract This 2-year-follow up study compared and evaluated the stability of early anterior open bite (AOB) treatment based on different appliances. Children from 7 to 10 years with Angle Class I, AOB larger than 1.0 mm and fully erupted maxillary and mandibular permanent central incisors were eligible. The initial sample was 99 patients distributed, by simple randomization, into four groups: BS (bonded spurs), CC (chincup), FPC (fixed palatal crib) and RPC (removable palatal crib). Cephalometric analysis was performed at baseline (T1), final (T2) and 2-year post-treatment (T3) by taking the overbite measurements as the main outcome. Blinding was possible to cephalometric analysis. At T3, with dropouts, there were 63 individuals, being BS (n=15; overbite 0.19 mm; 11.54 years; 10 female (F)/5 male (M)); CC (n=11; overbite -0.19 mm; 11.41 years; 8 F/3 M); FPC (n=21; overbite 1.23 mm; 11.44 years; 15 F/6 M) and; RPC (n=16; overbite 0.73 mm; 11.67 years; 6 F/10 M). Changes in dentoskeletal variables and breaking deleterious oral habits during the follow up were statically analyzed with p<.05. Mandibular skeletal linear measurements and vertical dental components have gradually increased with age, manly at pubertal growth spurt and at the establishment of permanent dentition after treatment. Incisor teeth extrusion had impact on AOB correction and stability in 4 groups, which recorded a 1.15 mm-improvement of overbite after treatment (T3-T2). The experimental appliances were effective with stable results, being FPC the device recorded the highest AOB correction and the lowest patient withdrawal rate.

Método Estudo descritivo, qualitativo, realizado com enfermeiras que atuam na Atenção Primária à Saúde em um município da Bahia, Brasil. Realizou-se entrevista individual, analisada pelo método do Discurso do Sujeito Coletivo, à luz das diretrizes da Política Nacional de Atenção Integral à Saúde do Homem. Resultados Participaram 40 enfermeiras. Os desafios para a implementação da política concentram-se na inoperância das ações governamentais, fragilidades da gestão municipal, subfinanciamento e descontinuidade das ações. Conclusão As enfermeiras enfrentam desafios complexos de macrogestão na implementação da Política Nacional de Atenção Integral à Saúde do Homem na Atenção Primária à Saúde.

ABSTRACT Objective To analyze the challenges experienced by nurses in the implementation of the National Policy for Comprehensive Attention to Men’s Health. Method Descriptive, qualitative study, carried out with nurses working in Primary Health Care in a city in the state of Bahia, Brazil. Individual interviews were carried out and then analyzed using the Discourse of the Collective Subject, in the light of the guidelines of the National Policy for Comprehensive Attention to Men’s Health. Results A total of 40 nurses participated. The challenges for the implementation of the policy are related to the inoperability of government actions, weaknesses in municipal management, underfunding and discontinuity of actions. Conclusion Nurses face complex macro-management challenges in the implementation of the National Policy for Comprehensive Attention to Men’s Health in Primary Health Care.

RESUMEN Objetivo Analizar los desafíos vividos por las enfermeras en la implementación de la Política Nacional de Atención Integral a la Salud del Hombre. Método Se trata de un estudio descriptivo y cualitativo realizado con enfermeras que trabajan en la Atención Primaria de Salud en un municipio de Bahía, Brasil. Se llevaron a cabo entrevistas individuales y se analizaron con el método del Discurso del Sujeto Colectivo, a la luz de los lineamientos de la Política Nacional de Atención Integral a la Salud del Hombre. Resultados Participaron 40 enfermeras. Los retos para la aplicación de la política se concentran en la inoperancia de las acciones gubernamentales, la debilidad de la gestión municipal, la infrafinanciación y la discontinuidad de las acciones. Conclusión Las enfermeras se enfrentan a complejos retos de macrogestión para implementar la Política Nacional de Atención Integral a la Salud del Hombre en la Atención Primaria Sanitaria.

Resumo: Introdução: Em todo o mundo, a arte tem sido utilizada como recurso pedagógico no curso médico. No Brasil, vários grupos de “palhaçoterapia” - projetos que envolvem a atuação de estudantes como palhaços-doutores - foram criados visando promover uma humanização do cuidado nos hospitais. A partir daí, vários estudos começaram a identificar impactos da participação nesses projetos na formação médica. Este estudo investiga a percepção do profissional formado acerca da influência da experiência como palhaço-doutor na sua prática médica. Objetivo: Este estudo tem como objetivo analisar, na graduação de Medicina, a formação na arte do palhaço como estratégia para contribuir para o desenvolvimento de competências na prática médica. Método: Trata-se de uma pesquisa exploratória e descritiva com abordagem qualitativa, por meio de entrevista semiestruturada com 15 participantes, que foram escolhidos pela técnica da bola de neve. O universo da pesquisa consiste em médicos que participaram de projetos de palhaçoterapia durante a graduação, em Recife, Pernambuco. As informações coletadas foram organizadas com o auxílio do software MAXQDA e submetidas à análise textual discursiva proposta por Moraes, que segue três passos de forma cíclica: a desmontagem dos textos em unidades de significado, o estabelecimento de relações e a captação do emergente. Resultado: A partir da análise das transcrições das entrevistas, emergiram diversas categorias de competências relatadas pelos participantes. No processo de construção de um novo significado com base nesses achados, foi necessário selecionar os que tinham relação com o que estava proposto nas Diretrizes Curriculares Nacionais (DCN) de Medicina de 2014. As habilidades percebidas foram agrupadas nas seguintes categorias: sensibilização, ressignificação, lidar com o erro e relação com o paciente. Conclusão: Esta pesquisa procurou explorar o fenômeno translacional, por meio do qual se investigaram quais ensinamentos, na visão de profissionais da medicina, foram apreendidos para sua prática a partir da aprendizagem e do exercício da arte do palhaço. Quando se realizou essa comparação com as DCN, foi possível encontrar interseções entre o que se espera desenvolver durante a formação médica e algumas das competências desenvolvidas com ajuda da arte do palhaço.

Abstract: Introduction: Art has been used as a teaching resource in medical education around the world. In Brazil, several “clown therapy” groups - a common name for projects in which students perform as “clown doctors” in hospitals - have been created with the aim of helping to humanize hospital care. Several studies have identified the impacts on medical training, as perceived by the participants of such projects. This study investigates how trained professionals view the influence of their previous experiences as clown doctors on actual medical practice. Objective: To analyze clown training in medical school as a strategy to contribute to the development of medical practice skills. Method: This is an exploratory and descriptive study with a qualitative approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 participants, who were chosen using the snowball technique. The sample consists of doctors who participated in clown therapy projects during their undergraduate training, in Recife, Pernambuco. The collected information was organized with the MAXQDA software and underwent discursive content analysis as proposed by Moraes, which follows a three-step cycle: the deconstruction of text into units of meaning, the establishment of relationships, and the capture of the emerging knowledge. Result: Analysis of the interview transcripts generated several categories of competencies reported by the participants. In the process of constructing new meaning based on these findings, it was necessary to select those that were related to the proposals of the 2014 National Curriculum Guidelines (DCNs) for medicine. The perceived skills were grouped into the following categories: awareness, resignification, dealing with error and physician-patient relationship. Conclusion: This research sought to explore the translational phenomenon, investigating which competencies, in the eyes of medical professionals, were learned from practicing the art of clowning. By drawing comparisons with the National Curriculum Guidelines (DCNs), intersections were found between expected development during medical training and some of the skills developed with the help of the art of clowning.

Abstract The log of a SPT in very soft clay may simply indicate a zero blow-count, or present information on the penetration – under self-weight – of the composition (sampler, rods and hammer) as recommended by some standards. The second type of information is often disregarded by design engineers due to the lack of a standard procedure for measuring these penetrations or because the test is regarded as not sensitive enough to give an indication on the undrained shear strength of soft clays. The penetration under the composition’s self-weight, however, can indicate the magnitude of Su, which, along with other more specific and sensitive tests, can help in assessing the spatial distribution of clay consistency in a large deposit. A proposed test procedure and interpretation had been given in an earlier technical note. This note presents an extended formulation and an evaluation of Su via the SPT at a construction site in Rio de Janeiro, including comparisons with results of piezocone and vane tests. The values of Su obtained with the SPT lie between the profiles given by vane tests, corrected by Plasticity Index, and the Critical State Theory, the latter representing a lower bound to the clay strength.

RESUMO O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a precisao e acurácia por meio de análise de modelos digitais de moldes digitalizados obtidos com quatro marcas comerciais de alginato em diferentes tempos. Oitenta moldes de um Typodont padrao foram obtidos utilizando 4 tipos de alginato (CCC: Cavex Color Change; IA: Identic Alginate; HY5: Hydrogum 5 e JP: Jeltrate Plus). Os moldes foram escaneados em quatro tempos: mediatamente (T1), 24h (T2), 72h (T3) e 120h (T4) após a moldagem. As medidas foram feitas em très dimensoes: ântero-posterior, transversal e vertical. Diferenças significativas nas mudanças dimensionais foram observadas entre os materiais ao longo do tempo (p <0,05). Variação dimensional ântero-posterior foi observada entre os tempos, principalmente para IA e JP. Para as variáveis transversal e vertical houve diferenga entre os grupos, principalmente em 24h, 72h e 120h. CCC apresentou contração dimensional significativa apenas em T120 (transversal). IA e JP apresentaram maiores distorções dimensionais na vertical. Os materiais de moldagem utilizados nao foram dimensionalmente estáveis quando avaliados após 120 horas de moldagem. No entanto, tais evidencias sugerem que os alginatos com maior tempo de armazenamento, como Cavex Color Change, sao mais precisos do que os alginatos convencionais.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the precision and accuracy of molds made with four commercial brands of alginate scanned at different times using digital model analysis. Eighty molds of a standard Typodont were made using 4 types of alginate (CCC: Cavex Color Change; IA: Identic Alginate; HY5: Hydrogum 5 and JP: Jeltrate Plus). The molds were scanned at four times: immediately (T1), 24h (T2), 72h (T3) and 120h (T4) after molding. Measurements were taken in three dimensions: anteroposterior, transverse and vertical. Significant differences in dimensional changes were noted between the materials over time (p <0.05). Anteroposterior dimensional variation was noted between times, especially for IA and JP. For transverse and vertical variables, a difference was found between the groups, especially at 24 h, 72 h and 120 h. CCC presented significant dimensional shrinkage only at T120 (transverse). IA and JP presented larger dimensional distortions in the vertical measurements. The molding materials used were not dimensionally stable when evaluated after 120 hours of molding. However, such evidence suggests that alginates with longer storage time, such as Cavex Color Change, are more accurate than conventional alginates.

RESUMO Objetivo: Realizar uma simulação numérica, por meio do Método dos Elementos Finitos (MEF), para obter as tensões de von Mises em arcos Mushroom. Métodos: Foram usados arcos com geometria Mushroom de titânio-molibdênio, com secção transversal 0,017” x 0,025”. Adotou-se valores de tensão de escoamento (σesc) de 1.240 MPa e módulo de elasticidade (E) de 69 GPa. O arco foi modelado por meio do software Autodesk Inventor, e seu desempenho foi simulado utilizando-se o software de elementos finitos Ansys Workbench (Swanson Analysis System, Houston, Pennsylvania, EUA). Para a simulação, foi considerada a análise para grandes deslocamentos. O arco foi conformado em suas extremidades considerando-se planos de 0° e 45°, pré-ativado em 2,5mm e ativado por meio de suas extremidades verticais, separadas 4,0 mm ou 5,0 mm. Resultados: As tensões revelaram um valor máximo de 1.158 MPa na maior parte da alça, aos 5,0 mm de ativação, com exceção de uma área muito pequena, com valor de 1.324 MPa, situada no topo da alça. Conclusões: Os arcos Mushroom são capazes de produzir níveis de tensão situados dentro da região elástica e poderiam ser ativados com segurança até os 5,0 mm de ativação.

ABSTRACT Objective: To perform a numerical simulation using FEM to study the von Mises stresses on Mushroom archwires. Methods: Mushroom archwires made of titanium-molybdenum alloy with 0.017 x 0.025-in cross-section were used in this study. A YS of 1240 MPa and a Young’s modulus of 69 GPa were adopted. The archwire was modeled in Autodesk Inventor software and its behavior was simulated using the finite element code Ansys Workbench (Swanson Analysis Systems, Houston, Pennsylvania, USA). A large displacement simulation was used for non-linear analysis. The archwires were deformed in their extremities with 0° and 45°, and activated by their vertical extremities separated at 4.0 or 5.0 mm. Results: Tensions revealed a maximum of 1158 MPa at the whole part of the loop at 5.0mm of activation, except in a very small area situated at the top of the loop, in which a maximum of 1324 Mpa was found. Conclusions: Mushroom loops are capable to produce tension levels in an elastic range and could be safely activated up to 5.0mm.

Abstract This retrospective study evaluated facial profile pleasantness determined by two protocols of Class II treatment. The sample comprised facial profile silhouettes obtained retrospectively from the pretreatment (T1) and posttreatment (T2) cephalograms of 60 patients (42 males and 18 females) divided into two groups. One group of 30 patients (mean age of 12.84 years) was treated with the extraction of maxillary first premolars (mean treatment time of 2.7 years), and the other group of 30 patients (mean age of 12.81 years) was treated with a mandibular advancement appliance (Forsus) (mean treatment time of 2.49 years). The facial profile silhouettes (T1 and T2) were randomly distributed in an album containing one patient per sheet. The examiners consisted of 60 orthodontists and 60 lay individuals, who analyzed the profiles in regard to facial pleasantness, using the Likert scale. A comparison between stages T1 and T2 of the two treatment protocols and between the examiners was performed by mixed-design analysis of variance at a significance level of 5%. The results demonstrated a significant difference between T1 and T2 (greater scores for T2 compared to T1), and between lay individuals and orthodontists (orthodontists assigned higher scores), but with no significant difference between the treatment protocols. Both protocols produced positive effects on the facial profile esthetics, from the standpoint of lay individuals and orthodontists.

RESUMO É inegável que a ancoragem com mini-implantes extra-alveolares revolucionou a nossa especialidade. No mesmo sentido, o correto entendimento da biomecânica com mini-implantes permitiu ampliar a gama de movimentos dentários como nunca visto na prática clínica. Deve-se, porém, atentar às diversas possibilidades dos sistemas de aplicação das forças decorrentes do uso da ancoragem esquelética, com vistas a produzir tratamentos cada vez mais eficientes, principalmente em relação aos efeitos no plano oclusal. Assim, o presente artigo versa, por meio de casos clínicos, sobre a aplicação de conceitos da biomecânica que são extremamente relevantes para o correto emprego dos mini-implantes extra-alveolares.

ABSTRACT It is undeniable that extra-alveolar mini-implants anchorage has revolutionized Orthodontics. Correspondingly, the proper understanding of mini-implants biomechanics allowed to broaden the range of dental movements as never seen before in clinical practice. However, in order to produce better treatments, especially regarding the effects in occlusal plane, it is important to be aware of the numerous possibilities of applying force systems based on skeletal anchorage. Thus, this paper aims to address, by means of clinical cases, the application of biomechanics concepts that are extremely relevant to the proper employment of extra-alveolar mini-implants.
