Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o potencial de pó da rocha olivina melilitito, em duas granulometrias e em doses crescentes, para melhorar as características químicas do solo e o crescimento e o acúmulo de nutrientes em plantas de soja (Glycine max) e sorgo (Sorghum bicolor). Os tratamentos consistiram de três doses de olivina melilitito, equivalentes a 2,5, 5,0 e 10 Mg ha-1, nas granulometrias de pó e filler do produto comercial. Foram realizadas análises físico-químicas e mineralógicas, tendo-se utilizado, como base, instrução normativa para pó de rocha como remineralizador de solos. As plantas de soja e sorgo foram cultivadas por 60 e 45 dias, respectivamente, em casa de vegetação, em Cambissolo Háplico Alumínico e Argissolo Vermelho Distrófico sômbrico. O pó da rocha olivina melilitito aplicado nas doses crescentes e nas duas granulometrias testadas melhorou as características químicas dos dois solos estudados e promoveu o desenvolvimento das plantas. No entanto, a granulometria filler é mais eficiente que a do pó para melhorar as características químicas dos solos e o desenvolvimento e o acúmulo de nutrientes nas plantas.

Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the potential of olivine melilitite rock powder, in two particle sizes and in increasing rates, to improve the chemical properties of the soil and the growth and nutrient accumulation of soybean (Glycine max) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) plants. The treatments consisted of three rates of the rock powder, equivalent to 2.5, 5.0, and 10 Mg ha-1, in the powder and filler particle sizes of the commercial product. Physicochemical and mineralogical analyses were carried out using, as a basis, the Brazilian normative ruling on rock powder as a soil remineralizer. The soybean and sorghum plants were cultivated for 60 and 45 days, respectively, in a greenhouse on a Humic Dystrudept and a Typic Hapludult. The olivine melilitite rock powder applied in the tested increasing rates and two particle sizes improved soil chemical properties and promoted plant growth. However, the filler particle size is more efficient than that of the powder to improve soil chemical properties and plant growth and nutrient accumulation.

ABSTRACT. Rock dusts in association with organic sources have been used in agriculture to improve soil chemical characteristics and food composition. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of the rock dusts siltstone, tephrite, and olivine melilitite pure or combined and associated or not with cattle manure on the chemical composition of soybean seeds of the cultivar BRS 232 grown on a Cambisol and Nitisol subjected to these treatments and conventional fertilization. For this, an experiment was carried out with pots in a greenhouse using a Cambisol and Nitisol to cultivate the soybean from January to May 2019 until seed production. The seeds were harvested, ground, and sieved through a 1 mm mesh sieve to determine the nutrient, phytate, and crude protein contents. The effects of the rock dusts on the chemical composition of seeds were directly related to the chemical characteristics of the evaluated soils. The tested rock dusts had a more pronounced response in the Cambisol (poorer soil) than in the Nitisol (more fertile). The contents and accumulation of nutrients in the seeds, as well as the total dry matter production in both soils subjected to the treatments with the rock dusts olivine melilitite and siltstone + olivine melilitite, pure and combined with manure, were similar and, in some cases, higher than the treatments subjected to conventional fertilization. The combination of manure and rock dusts provided an increase in the concentration of nutrients in both soils, resulting in their higher availability for plants and directly reflecting on the chemical composition of seeds.

ABSTRACT Soils with andic properties are characterized by a low apparent density, variable charges, large amounts of allophanes, imogolite, ferrihydrite, and/or organo-metallic complexes with Al, and present high phosphate retention. Soils derived from non-pyroclastic materials rich in silicates, formed under a cold and humid climate, a large amount of organic carbon, acid weathering, andic properties can manifest when a large amount of Al is present in the form of organo-metallic complexes. This study aimed to evaluate the characteristics and geographical expression of soils with such properties in areas of altitude in the extreme south of Brazil, on the escarpment edges of the Serra Geral Formation, under a cold and humid climate. The sampling points were selected based on environmental characteristics such as geomorphology, geology, the coloration of the superficial horizon of the soil, and position in the landscape, covering a linear distance of approximately 185 km at the escarpment edge between the states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. Soil samples were described and collected from ten soils with histic horizon O, three soils with humic horizon, and one soil with histic horizon H. The undisturbed soil samples were collected using volumetric metallic cylinder to determine the soil bulk density. Organic matter, pH(H2O), P retention, and selective dissolutions of Al, Fe, and Si analyses were performed. The Cambissolos Hísticos and Organossolos Fólicos showed andic properties, while the Cambissolos Húmicos and Organossolo Háplico did not meet one or more criteria, as required by the Brazilian Soil Classification System and the World Reference Base for Soil Resources. The horizons with andic properties were classified as aluandic, based on the predominance of Al associated with organic complexes. The cold climate and high cloudiness of the highest altitude areas in the extreme south of Brazil, occurring in a narrow strip of the escarpment of the Serra Geral Formation in the states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, allow the formation of a constantly humid environment. This environment favors the acid weathering of the source material, accumulation of organic matter in the soil, and its stabilization by the formation of organo-metallic complexes, mainly Al-humus. The combination of these factors gives the soils with histic horizons O a low bulk density, high phosphate retention, and Alo + ½Feo ≥2 % values, meeting the criteria required for andic properties.

ABSTRACT The occurrence of dark subsurface horizons rich in organic matter (OM) associated with polychrome in the B horizon (yellowish over reddish hue) is common in soils from Southern Brazil. The formation of these horizons and the combination with such morphological attributes has not been properly documented, and neither has the cause effect relationship. Four soil profiles with such sombric-like horizons with a yellowish color at the upper part of the B horizon over red subsoil were studied in Southern Brazil. Results from micromorphology, extractable sesquioxide minerals, clay mineralogy and isomorphic substitution of Fe by Al in iron minerals showed that melanization, xanthization, bioturbation, moderate shrinking/swelling and moderate ferralitization were the most evident pedogenetic processes in role. Xanthization is closely related to the sombric-like horizon formation. In the studied area the findings demonstrated that no clay and OM illuviation had taken place. Therefore, the classification of these soils was revisited, so as to take into account the processes that underlie their genesis with emphasis on xanthization, clay illuviation and soil aggregation. The results suggest that the sombric horizon may need redefinition, unless profiles can be found in which illuviation of clay and/or OM can be proven.

SUMMARY: The understanding of the succession process is a fundamental condition in defining strategies for the conservation and sustainable use of forest ecosystems. Therefore, we aimed at testing which ecological factors affect short-term successional changes in the upper-montane forests of the “Planalto Sul Catarinense” Region, Brazil. We evaluated the influence of propagules source, soil seed bank, edaphic and topographic variables, nucleating elements and natural regeneration floristic-structural composition on demographic rates of tree-shrub regenerating component in three disturbed open vegetation areas at São Joaquim National Park. We inventoried the regenerative component in 2014, 2015 and 2016, within one 20x100 m transect in each area. Afterwards, demographic rates were determined for each period. The influence of explicative variables on demographic rates of the regenerating component was tested through the Generalized Least Square (GLS) model. We found an increment in both individuals and richness over time. When analyzing the influence of the explanatory variables on the speed of the successional process, we observed that only the floristic-structural composition of the natural regeneration was determinant. We conclude that the speed of the represented succession is, to a large extent, a feature related to the phase of the successional trajectory in which the vegetation is found.

RESUMEN: Se busca evaluar los factores ecológicos que afectan los cambios sucesionales en los bosques de la alta montaña de la región "Planalto Sul Catarinense", Brasil. Se analizó la influencia de la fuente de propágulos, banco de semillas del suelo, variables edáficas y topográficas, elementos nucleadores y composición florístico-estructural de la regeneración natural en las tasas demográficas del componente de regeneración de árboles y arbustos en tres áreas de vegetación abierta perturbada en el Parque Nacional Nacional de São Joaquim. Se inventarió el componente regenerativo en 2014, 2015 y 2016, dentro de un transecto de 20x100 m en cada área. Entonces, se determinó las tasas demográficas para cada período. La influencia de las variables explicativas en las tasas demográficas del componente de regeneración se evaluó mediante el modelo de mínimos cuadrados generalizados (GLS). Se encontró un incremento tanto en los individuos como en la riqueza a lo largo del tiempo. Al analizar la influencia de las variables explicativas sobre la velocidad del proceso sucesorio, se observó que solo la composición florístico-estructural de la regeneración natural fue determinante. Por lo tanto, se puede inferir que la velocidad de sucesión representa una característica inherente a la fase sucesional de la vegetación. Se concluye que el proceso de sucesión se desarrolló de forma diferente entre áreas, con el pastizal presentando un proceso de invasión leñosa.

ABSTRACT Soils in the Depressão Central and Campanha Gaúcha in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, developed from sedimentary rocks are mainly Alfisols (Luvissolos, Planossolos and Plintossolos) and Ultisols (Argissolos) with high textural contrast between A and/or E horizons and clayey B horizons. Red Ultisols dominate in well-drained areas in the summit. But many soils present redoximorphic features on the backslope and footslope, with mottled and/or nodules similar to plinthite due to the oscillating of the water table above the rock or poorly permeable saprolite. Identifying morphological features, mineralogical and chemical properties, and parent material differences are essential to identify the main processes responsible for their genesis. Knowledge of the relative distribution of different forms of iron in the soil is also of particular interest when interpreting pedogenesis. This study aimed to evaluated the main process responsible for the high textural contrast in soils developed from different sedimentary lithologies, and how the redoximorphic features observed in some soils may be related to genesis of plinthites and ferrolysis processes. The study area is located in the hydrographic basin of Rio Santa Maria, in the city of Rosário do Sul – RS, Brazil (30° 15’ 28” S and 54° 54’ 50” W), average altitude of 132 m and Cfa-type climate. Topolithosequences were defined based on soils developed from lithogies of Piramboia and Sanga-do-Cabral geological formations, by choosing soil profiles according to the source material, variations in relief, altitude and hydrological conditions. Morphological descriptions, particle size determinations, chemical analysis, mineralogy of the clay fraction by XRD analysis, determination of the main forms of iron, tests to identify plinthite were performed. Argiluviation, ferrolysis and plinthization were the most active processes identified in the genesis of most studied soils. The high textural contrast on these soils was not solely due to clay illuviation processes but also ferrolysis and lithological discontinuities in some soils, indicating polygenetic origin. Redoximorphic features in most soil revealed that iron segregation in most soils occurs like mottles and not plinthite, since they did not remain aggregated after the various wetting and drying cycles.

ABSTRACT The classification of Spodosols on the second categorical level (suborder), according to the Brazilian Soil Classification System (SiBCS), is done by observing the colors of genetic horizons in the field. The presence or absence of iron oxides is the main factor for this classification, and the color of the horizon is the criterion currently adopted. However, the simple observation of color in the field can be mistaken and cause an error in the definition of the second categorical level. This occurs when spodic horizons that do not contain iron oxides show high chroma color, or dark color due to the organic matter content, which masks the presence of iluviated Fe produced by podzolization. This can lead to errors, such as classifying Humiluvico horizons as Ferriluvico, and Ferri-humiluvico horizons as Humiluvico. These misunderstandings are currently solved through complex analyses using specific extractors and sophisticated equipment. Thus, obtaining a simple, fast, and inexpensive method to confirm the presence or absence of iron oxides in samples of spodic horizons is needed. This study tested an alternative method to assist in the determination of the second categorical level of the class of coastal plain Spodosols. The method consists of calcining samples in a muffle at 600 °C for 6 h. The calcination enabled to identify spodic horizons with and without presence of iron quickly; the result was compared with selective extraction analyses carried out using three different extractors: sodium pyrophosphate, ammonium acid oxalate, and sodium dithionite-citrate. The results obtained from these methods (calcination in muffle and selective extraction of iron oxides) enabled the identification of samples presenting colors varying from yellow to reddish, indicating the presence of iron, whereas those with the whitish color indicated absence or very low iron oxide levels. The 12 profiles of Spodosols were described and classified according to the SiBCS, and six profiles needed to be reclassified after the calcination procedure, which proved to be efficient.

ABSTRACT A commonly accepted concept holds that highly fertile, shallow soils are predominant in the Basaltic Hillsides of Santa Catarina State, in southern Brazil, but their agricultural use is restricted, either by excessive stoniness, low effective depth or steep slopes. Information about soil properties and distribution along the slopes in this region is, however, scarce, especially regarding genesis and clay fraction mineralogy. The objective of this study was to evaluate soil properties of 12 profiles distributed in three toposequences (T) of the Basaltic Hillsides in the State of Santa Catarina, two located in the valley of the Peixe River (Luzerna - T1 and Ipira - T2) and one in Descanso, in the far West of the state (T3). The main focus was the mineralogical composition of the clay fraction, identified by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and its relations with the soil chemical properties. The morphological, chemical, and mineralogical properties of the soils of the toposequences differed from each other. In most soils, the position of the most intense XRD reflections indicated predominance of kaolinite (K) however, for being broad and asymmetric, a participation of interstratified kaolinite-smectite (K-S) was assumed. Soils of T2 and T3, located in regions with higher temperatures, lower water surplus, and lower altitude than those of T1, were more fertile, mostly redder, and contained higher proportions of smectites (S) and interstratified K-S mineral, accounting for a higher activity of the clay fraction of most soils. The T1 soils were generally less fertile, with lower clay activity and, aside from kaolinite, contained smectites with interlayered hydroxy-Al polymers (HIS). The low estimated smectite contents of the most fertile soils of all toposequences disagree with the high values of cation exchange capacity (CEC) and clay activity related to pure kaolinite soils. The broad and asymmetric reflections of most of the supposed kaolinites identified as dominant minerals indicate the presence of K-S interlayers, most likely contributing to raise the CEC of the soils.

ABSTRACT Chemical speciation of the soil solution is an important tool to identify Al species related to phytotoxicity. In some Brazilian acid soils, the Al extractable by the KCl 1.0 mol L -1 solution (Al-KCl) exceeds 10 cmol c kg -1 and even then, in some situations, it does not cause toxicity to the plants. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between these high concentrations of Al-KCl found in some Brazilian acid soils and the activity of the different Al chemical species in the soil solution, as well as the response of soybean and corn plants to lime application. Subsurface horizon (B) samples of five soils were collected in four states of Brazil (AC, PE, RS, and SC) from areas that had never been cultivated. The samples were then given increasing rates of limestone, equivalent to that required to neutralize 0, 0.25, 0.5, and 1.00 times the contents of H+Al and were incubated for 98 days. After that period, the soils were fertilized and planted to soybean and corn in the greenhouse for 60 and 45 days, respectively, in 2015. The experimental units consisted of 8 L pots, filled with 5 kg of soil (dry basis). After each crop, the plants and soil samples were collected to determine the leaf, stem, and root dry matter, and chemical composition. In the soil solution, cations and anions, pH, electrical conductivity, and dissolved organic carbon were quantified. The distribution of the Al species was evaluated using the program Minteq. Free Al (Al 3+ ) was the species found in highest proportion in treatments without limestone, in all soils. Application at the lowest limestone rate, equivalent to 25 % of that required for H+Al neutralization, was sufficient to decrease Al activity in the soil solution to levels considered non-toxic to plants in four of the five soils. High levels of Al-KCl are not related to manifestation of toxicity and to Al 3+ activity in the solution of Hapludult (Acre profile 9; AC9) and Hapludult (Rosario do Sul; RS) since dry matter (DM) production in these soils was little influenced by liming, unlike what occurred in the Hapludult (Pernambuco; PE), Humudepts (Bom Retiro; BR), and Kandiudox (Curitibanos; CB) soils, in which Al-KCl contents were related to Al activity in the solution and to DM production of the plants grown in them.

ABSTRACT The source material is one of the factors that most influence soil genesis and the mainly responsible for the nature, composition, and behavior of the soil. Given the geological complexity of the Santa Maria River basin, the objective of this study was to investigate whether the new lithologies described recently may be responsible for a greater variation in soil properties, as well as in the soil taxonomy itself. The study area is located in the municipality of Rosário do Sul, RS, Brazil at 30° 15’ 28” S and 54° 54’ 50” W, with average altitude of 132 m and climate type Cfa. This study was supported by a cartographic base composed of topographic charts, geological maps, satellite images, digital elevation models, and maps of geomorphometric variables, with the support of GPS receivers and GIS. Topolithosequences were defined from soils developed from the Pirambóia, Sanga-do-Cabral, and Guará Formations, and soil profiles were chosen based on types of source materials, variations in relief, and altitude. A classical model of slope compartmentalization was applied for correlation of the geomorphic surfaces with pedogenesis. Soil profiles were described in a general and morphological manner, and soil samples were collected for analysis. The physical and chemical properties determined were particle size, active and potential acidity, organic C content, Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, and Al3+. The sum of bases, CEC, flocculation activity and degree of flocculation of the clay fraction, and base (V), aluminum (m), and sodium saturation were calculated. Soil properties were evaluated through factor analysis and grouping, which allowed profiles to be grouped based on their variables and identification of which variables were preponderant in distinguishing them. Furthermore, multivariate analysis allowed statistical differentiation of the profiles in the same lithostratigraphic unit and in different relief positions, and also differentiation of soils developed from different source materials and occupying similar positions in the pedo-landscape, through the formation of homogeneous groups of profiles linked by their degree of similarity.

ABSTRACT Brown Nitossolos (Nitisols) and Latossolos (Ferralsols), according to the Brazilian System of Soil Classification (SiBCS), have a “caráter retrátil” as their distinctive property. Because this is a new topic, it is necessary to propose methods for evaluation. The objectives of this study were to evaluate methodologies for quantifying the shrinkage of soil using the Syringe Method and the Metallic Mercury Method, and to propose a new one, the “Ring with Sand Method”. Soil samples from eight pedons were used, with six Nitossolos and Latossolos with shrinkage, a Latossolo without shrinkage, and a Vertissolo (Vertissol) with admittedly high shrinkage and expansion. The methods were effective in identifying the greater degree of shrinkage of the Vertissolo . However, the Ring with Sand Method was the only one to indicate significant differences between the Vertissolo and the Latossolo without shrinkage, and this method differentiated the shrinkable soils as to the intensity of the characteristic. The proposed method was effective and can serve as a standard to quantify shrinkage.

ABSTRACT Shrinkage capacity (caráter retrátil in Portuguese) is a new diagnostic characteristic recently introduced in the Brazilian System of Soil Classification (SiBCS) to indicate shrink and swell properties observed in subtropical soils from highland plateaus in southern Brazil, specifically in Oxisols with brown colors. In soils located in road cuts exposed to drying for some weeks, strong shrinkage of soil volume is observed in these soils, resulting in the formation of pronounced vertical cracks and large and very large prismatic structures, which crumble in blocks when handled. We hypothesize that such properties are related to their clay mineralogy, although there are no conclusive studies about this, the motive for the present study. Samples of the A and B horizons from six Oxisols with expansive capacity from the states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul were analyzed. One Rhodic Hapludox, from the state of Paraná, without expansive capacity, was used for comparison. All the soils are very clayey, originated from basalt, and have similar iron oxide content. For identification of clay mineralogy, X-ray diffraction techniques were employed, together with the use of NEWMOD® software to investigate and describe the interstratified minerals. The results showed that most expansive soils have a similar mineralogical composition, with kaolinite, interstratified kaolinite-smectite (K-S), and hydroxy-Al interlayered smectites (HIS), unlike the non-expansive Rhodic Hapludox, which exhibited kaolinite with significant amounts of gibbsite and low amount of interstratified K-S. According to the mineralogical assemblage identified in the expansive soils, we can affirm that the mechanism of smectite expansion and contraction is related to the shrinkage capacity of the soil, considering that the level of hydroxy-Al intercalation is low. In addition, these mechanisms also are related to the presence of quasicrystals and domains that control the water dynamic in the smectites, contributing to shrinkage capacity.

ABSTRACT Quali-quantitative and crystallographic characterizations of the different minerals of a soil are essential for the best evaluation of its genesis, degree of weathering, active pedogenetic processes, physical and chemical properties, and its potential reserve of mineral nutrients. This study presents the results of mineralogical investigations carried out to verify the influence of the different lithologies of three geological formations of a sedimentary nature on the mineralogical composition of the soils and the relation of this mineralogical composition to soil chemical properties. The study area is located in the physiographic region of the Santa Maria River basin in the municipality of Rosário do Sul, RS, Brazil, at 30° 15’ 28” S and 54° 54’ 50” W, with average altitude of 132 m and Cfa climate type. Topolithosequences were defined from soils developed from the lithology of the Pirambóia, Sanga-do-Cabral and Guará Formations, choosing representative soil profiles based on types of parent materials and variations in relief and altitude. A general and morphological description of the profiles was carried out, and soil samples were collected for analysis. The properties determined were texture, active and potential acidity, organic C, exchangeable Al, sum of bases, CEC at pH7, and base saturation. Mineralogical characterization of the clay fraction was performed by an X-ray diffractometer (XRD). In most of the profiles, kaolinite was the predominant clay, along with a significant contribution from 2:1 clay minerals and the presence of interstratified minerals in combination with kaolinite, which were related to the chemical properties of the soils. The crystallographic parameters of the kaolinite (full width at half maximum - FWHM, layer-d spacing, mean crystallite size - D, and mean number of layers - NL) varied, revealing a distinct pedogenetic evolution, which can be attributed to different degrees of weathering, as well as differences in the source material. Large and asymmetrical reflexes related to the d001 and 002 planes of kaolinite indicated that they are due to the presence of kaolinite-smectite strata in association with pure kaolinites.

RESUMO: O cultivo de Pinus sem uso de fertilização é uma prática comum no sul do Brasil e pode levar ao declínio da disponibilidade de fósforo (P) no solo. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as modificações nas frações de fósforo em Cambissolo submetido a sucessivos cultivos de Pinus taeda L. sem fertilização. Foram avaliadas duas florestas, com 16 anos de cultivo de Pinus (1o cultivo) e 49 anos (3o cultivo), onde amostras de solo foram coletadas nas camadas de 0-10, 10-20, 20-40, 40-60 e 60-80cm, em seis trincheiras por floresta. Nas amostras de solo foram determinados os teores de P em formas orgânicas (Po) e inorgânicas (Pi) usando esquema de fracionamento químico sequencial. As frações inorgânicas lábeis de P não sofreram alterações com os diferentes tempos de cultivo, no entanto houve declínio das frações orgânicas lábeis do primeiro para o terceiro cultivo, passando de 70,6 para 39,8mg dm-3 na camada de 0-10cm, indicando que essas formas atuam no tamponamento do Pi lábil. O P orgânico moderadamente lábil atuou como um dreno de P, aumentando seu percentual em relação ao total, de 34,7 para 56,3%, do primeiro para o terceiro cultivo. O cultivo do solo por 49 anos com Pinus taeda provoca a diminuição do teor de fósforo orgânico lábil, indicando que para este tipo de uso do solo essa forma de fósforo deveria ser considerada para diagnóstico da disponibilidade de fósforo e necessidade de fertilização.

ABSTRACT: Pinus cultivation without fertilization is a common practice in southern Brazil, which can induce a decline in the availability of phosphorus (P) in the soil. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes in phosphorus fractions in a Humic Cambisol subjected to continuous Pinus taeda L. cultivation without fertilization. Two forest stands were evaluated, after 16 years of Pinus cultivation (1st crop) and 49 years (3rd crop), when soil samples were collected (layers 0-10, 10-20, 20-40, 40-60, and 60-80cm) from six trenches per forest. In soil samples, the P contained in organic (Po) and inorganic (Pi) forms was determined by sequential chemical fractionation. Labile inorganic P fractions remained unchanged after the different cultivation periods. However, the labile organic fractions declined from the first to the third cycle (from 70.6 to 39.8mg dm-3 in the 0-10cm layer), indicating that these forms influence the buffering capacity of labile Pi. The moderately labile organic P acted as a P drain, increasing its percentage of the total, from 34.7 to 56.3%, from the first to the third crop. Soil cultivation for 49 years with Pinus taeda resulted in a reduction of the organic P content, indicating that for this soil use, this P form should be used to diagnose P availability and fertilization requirements.

ABSTRACT Palustrine areas and wetlands in particular are fragile ecosystems, with high biodiversity and high ecological productivity, and they provide benefits to society. The aim of this study was to describe and classify the main soils occurring in the wetlands of the Southern Plateau of Santa Catarina, and propose criteria for identification of hydromorphic environments as an aid in demarcation of their boundaries. Soils of four wetlands, in the municipalities of Bom Jardim da Serra, Bom Retiro, Lages, and Painel were described, collected, and taxonomically classified. A transection was demarcated in each one in which soils were analyzed in sites with different degrees of hydromorphism, corresponding to the inner, transition, and outer areas. In hydromorphic areas, the content of organic matter in the soil is higher than in non-hydromorphic areas, which influences the color and classification of the soils. In these soils, Aquents, Aquepts, and Histosols predominate, and Udepts predominate in the outer area. The drainage class and the higher chroma in the subsurface horizons of the Udepts indicate that they are outside the boundaries of the wetlands. The dark color in the surface horizons, along with the greyish colors, associated or not with the presence of mottling in the subsurface horizons, were the most obvious characteristics of a hydromorphic condition, indicating that the soil is located in the transitional and inner areas of the wetlands.
