Abstract Cellular beams are an attractive engineering solution due to their high strength to weight ratio, allowing for a design even lighter and more cost efficient in steel structures. These beams possess enhanced strength and stiffness compared to regular I-section beams of similar weight, due to their higher second moment of area. However, their variable cross-sections along the length introduce different modes of failure, making further research necessary, since there is a lack of standardized processes for their design. This paper investigates the design and verification procedures proposed by Ward (1990), Annex N (1998), Veríssimo et al. (2013), Fares et al. (2016), and Grilo et al. (2018) through a parametric study of cellular beams with varying geometries. To assess the buckling characteristics of cellular beams, shell finite element models are employed, which were previously validated, using experimental tests conducted by other researchers. The results obtained from a Python code implementing these design methods are then compared with Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis results for 80 beams. It can be concluded that the design methods provide conservative results for beams with intermediate or long spans. On the other hand, for beams with short spans, these methods may yield values that compromise safety. Finally, based on the FEM analysis results, a Hybrid Design Method (HDM) is proposed, which incorporates the verification procedures analyzed. Resumen El micetoma es una enfermedad granulomatosa crónica y de lento desarrollo caracterizada por la tríada de grandes inflamaciones subcutáneas similares a tumores indoloras, la formación de los senos nasales y secreción que generalmente contiene granos. Phellinus spp. son basidiomicetos filamentosos saprofitos que descomponen la madera. Son un poco reconocido causa de infecciones fúngicas invasivas y rara vez se informan en todo el mundo. Presentamos un paciente masculino de 59 años con micetoma causado por Phellinus spp. El diagnostico se confirmó con examen clínico, estudio de resonancia magnética (RM), cultivo de biopsia de tejido blando y óseo y reacción en cadena de la polimerasa. A lo mejor que sepamos, este es el primer caso reportado de micetoma debido a Phellinus spp. sin enfermedad granulomatosa crónica (EGC).

Abstract Mycetoma is a chronic and slow-developing granulomatous disease characterized by the triad of large painless tumour-like subcutaneous swellings, the formation of sinuses, and discharge that usually contains grains. Phellinus spp. are saprophytic wood-decaying filamentous basidiomycetes. They are an under-recognised cause of invasive fungal infections and are rarely reported worldwide. We report a 59-year-old male patient with mycetoma caused by Phellinus spp. The diagnosis was confirmed with clinical examination, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study, soft tissue and bone biopsy culture, and polymerase chain reaction. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of mycetoma due to Phellinus spp. without chronic granulomatous disease (CGD).

RESUMO O bambu é uma planta abundante em regiões tropicais, a qual pode ser utilizada como material estrutural não convencional; contudo, há alta variabilidade em suas propriedades mecânicas. Objetivou-se verificar a influência do teor de umidade e das seções (com e sem nó) na resistência à tração paralela a fibras dos colmos de três espécies de bambu (Dendrocalamus asper, Phyllostachys pubescens e Phyllostachys aurea), visando a aplicações estruturais. Para cada condição de umidade (ambiente, saturação em água, secagem em forno e controle), foi utilizado delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 3 x 2. Phyllostachys pubescens apresentou maior resistência à tração paralela do que as demais espécies. Em geral, o nó afetou negativamente a resistência à tração paralela para todas as condições, enquanto o teor de umidade não apresentou influência significativa, embora a análise descritiva tenha evidenciado sua influência nas variações dimensionais e na absorção de água.

ABSTRACT Bamboo is an abundant plant in tropical regions, which can be used as a nonconventional structural material; however, there is a high variability in its mechanical properties. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of the moisture content and of the sections (with and without node) on the tensile strength parallel to the culm fibers of three bamboo species (Dendrocalamus asper, Phyllostachys pubescens and Phyllostachys aurea), aiming at their use for structural purposes. For each moisture condition (ambient, saturated in water, oven dried and control), a completely randomized design, following a 3 x 2 factorial scheme, was used. Phyllostachys pubescens exhibited a higher tensile strength parallel to the fibers than the other species. In general, the node affected negatively the tensile strength parallel to the fibers for all analyzed conditions, while the moisture content did not show a significant influence, although the descriptive analysis exhibited its influence on the dimensional variations and water absorption.

ABSTRACT Constant changes in natural environments impose challenges to wild animal populations, especially those that depend on social life. We gathered data on the activity budget and social interactions of a capuchin monkey (Sapajus sp.) group of 17 individuals confined to an urban green area receiving human food supplementation. We observed the capuchins between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm, three days a month, between January 2012 and June 2013 (total of 530 hours of direct observations). We collected 15,208 behavioral records through instantaneous scan sampling and 2,538 events of social interaction in an adapted version of the “all occurrences” method. Activity budget of capuchins was dominated by traveling (42%) and foraging (38%), followed by feeding (10%), social interactions (5%), resting (4%), and others (2%). Except for feeding, the time spent on other activities varied across sex-age classes. Social interactions of capuchins were dominated by affiliative interactions (80%), mainly social play, followed by agonistic (11%) and cooperative (10%) interactions. Sexual interactions were rare (0.4%) and often involved juveniles (45% of the events). Juveniles performed most of the social interactions, followed by the alpha male, and were the main receptors of grooming, food sharing, and agonism. On the other hand, they were the main group involved in allocarrying of infants. Grooming between females and from them to alpha male was infrequent. However, grooming of the alpha male towards the adult females was frequent. We interpreted the deviations in the activity budget and social interactions of the urban capuchins as effects of human food supplementation and restriction on dispersal, illustrating the behavioral ability of capuchin monkeys to adjust their activity in human-altered environments.

RESUMO Este artigo investiga a produção histórica da infância e juventude de diversos países afetados pela crise econômica mundial que eclodiu em 2008, nos Estados Unidos. Foram utilizados documentos produzidos pelo UNICEF acerca das condições de vida garantidas à infância e adolescência, decorrentes das disputas ocasionadas e/ou agravadas pelo colapso financeiro mundial; foram analisados artigos internacionais que deram suporte e contribuíram nas análises dos dados documentais. Esta pesquisa foi feita por de meio de uma revisão histórica e de problematização das narrativas da literatura, com pesquisas voltadas aos países dos continentes: asiático, africano, europeu e americano. Encontraram-se fortes indicadores da precariedade em que está a política pública para a infância ao redor do mundo, principalmente em países com dificuldades socioeconômicas, além dos pertencentes ao leste europeu e nos EUA. Alerta-se acerca da necessidade de estudos sobre o impacto à infância brasileira da crise internacional e como o UNICEF tem abordado essas questões.

ABSTRACT This article had as goal to investigate the historical production of childhood and youth in several countries affected by the global financial crisis that ecloded in 2008 at the United States. Various documents produced by UNICEF describing how the financial system collapse affected or aggravated the life conditions of children and adolescents were used, as well as other international articles that gave support to the documental data analysis. This research was done by means of a historical revision and problematization of literature narratives in the African, Asian, European and American continents. The search found strong indicators about the precariousness of public policies for children around the world, especially in countries with socioeconomic problems, and in Eastern Europe and the USA as well. Therefore, we alert to the need for studies about the impact of the international crisis in Brazilian children and how UNICEF is addressing these issues.

RESUMEN Este artículo propuso investigar la producción histórica de la niñez y la juventud de diversos países afectados por la crisis económica mundial que estalló en 2008 en los EEUU. Fueron utilizados documentos elaborados por la UNICEF sobre condiciones de vida garantizados a la infancia y adolescencia, como consecuencia de disputas influenciadas por el colapso financiero mundial; se analizaron artículos internacionales que sirvieron como soporte y contribución. Esta investigación fue realizada mediante una revisión histórica y de problematización de las narrativas de la literatura, dirigidas a la infancia en los continentes: asiático, africano, europeo, y americano. Se encontraron fuertes indicadores de inseguridad que afectan a la política publica de la infancia al rededor del mundo, principalmente en países con dificultades socioeconómicas, además de países de Europa oriental y los EEUU. Se alerta la necesidad de estudios sobre el impacto de la crisis internacional en la infancia brasileña y como la UNICEF viene ocupándose de ello.

ABSTRACT This paper addresses the problem of fault detection in stator winding of induction machine by a multiple change points detection approach in time series. To handle this problem a new fuzzy/Bayesian approach is proposed which differs from previous approaches since it does not require prior information as: the number of change points or the characterization of the data probabilistic distribution. The approach has been applied in the monitoring the current of the stator winding induction machine. The good results obtained by proposed methodology illustrate its efficiency.

RESUMO Objetivo: comparar as prescrições eletrônicas e manuais de um hospital público do Distrito Federal, identificando os fatores de risco para ocorrência de erros de medicação. Método: Estudo descritivo-exploratório, comparativo e retrospectivo. A coleta de dados ocorreu no período de julho de 2012 a janeiro de 2013, através de instrumento para revisão das informações referentes ao processo de medicação contidas em prontuários. Integraram a amostra 190 prontuários manuais e 199 eletrônicos, com 2027 prescrições cada. Resultados: na comparação com a prescrição manual, observou-se redução significativa dos fatores de risco após implantação da eletrônica, em itens como "falta da forma de diluição" (71,1% e 22,3%) e "prescrição com nome comercial" (99,5%/31,5%), respectivamente. Por outro lado, os fatores de risco "não checar" e "falta de CRM do prescritor" aumentaram. A ausência de registro de alergia e as ocorrências em relação aos medicamentos são equivalentes para os dois grupos. Conclusão: de maneira geral, a utilização do sistema de prescrição eletrônica foi associada à redução significativa dos fatores de risco para erros de medicação nos seguintes aspectos: ilegibilidade, prescrição com nome comercial e presença de itens essenciais que proporcionam prescrição eficaz e segura.

Method: descriptive-exploratory, comparative and retrospective study. Data collection occurred from July 2012 to January 2013, using an instrument for the review of the information contained in medical records related to the medication process. A total of 190 manual and 199 electronic records composed the sample, with 2027 prescriptions each. Results: compared to the manual prescription, a significant reduction was observed in the risk factors after implantation of the electronic prescription, in items such as "lack of the form of dilution" (71.1% to 22.3%) and "prescription with brand name" (99.5% to 31.5%). Conversely, the risk factors "no check" and "lack of CRM of the prescriber" increased. The lack of the allergy registration and the occurrences related to medication were the same for both groups. Conclusion: generally, the use of the electronic prescription system was associated with a significant reduction in risk factors for medication errors, concerning the following aspects: illegibility, prescription with brand name and presence of essential items that provide a safe and effective prescription.

Nonhuman primates are considered as the natural hosts of Hepatitis A virus (HAV), as well as other pathogens, and can serve as natural sentinels to investigate epizootics and endemic diseases that are of public health importance. During this study, blood samples were collected from 112 Neotropical primates (NTPs) (Sapajus nigritus and S. cay, n = 75; Alouatta caraya, n = 37) trap-captured at the Paraná River basin, Brazil, located between the States of Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul. Anti-HAV IgG antibodies were detected in 4.5% (5/112) of NTPs, specifically in 6.7% (5/75) of Sapajus spp. and 0% (0/37) of A. caraya. In addition, all samples were negative for the presence of IgM anti-HAV antibodies. These results suggest that free-ranging NTPs were exposed to HAV within the geographical regions evaluated.

Capuchin monkeys, Sapajus Kerr, 1792, are known for their flexible behavior, including tool use, and their ability to survive in urban forests. We observed capuchin juveniles using wood as hammer and anvil and different materials as sponges (four tool-use events) in two geographically distinct urban populations in Brazil, in 2012: two in Goiânia, Central Brazil and two in Foz do Iguaçu, Southern Brazil. In Goiânia, a male used a detached tree branch as a hammer and a buttress root as an anvil to pound a seed of Terminalia Linnaeus. Another male used a small branch with leaves as a dipping tool to access water inside a tree trunk hole. In Foz do Iguaçu, the capuchins used a small branch and a piece of bread to obtain water by dipping them into tree trunk holes. This latter event might be interpreted as a case of self-control, with a familiar food item used as a tool to reach a resource that is difficult to access otherwise. Our observations contribute to the knowledge on the tool-kit of capuchins and we propose that these urban populations should be conserved for scientific evaluations of behavioral flexibility in non-human primates.

Introduction Saint Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) primarily occurs in the Americas and produces disease predominantly in humans. This study investigated the serological presence of SLEV in nonhuman primates and horses from southern Brazil. Methods From June 2004 to December 2005, sera from 133 monkeys (Alouatta caraya, n=43; Sapajus nigritus, n=64; Sapajus cay, n=26) trap-captured at the Paraná River basin region and 23 blood samples from farm horses were obtained and used for the serological detection of a panel of 19 arboviruses. All samples were analyzed in a hemagglutination inhibition (HI) assay; positive monkey samples were confirmed in a mouse neutralization test (MNT). Additionally, all blood samples were inoculated into C6/36 cell culture for viral isolation. Results Positive seroreactivity was only observed for SLEV. A prevalence of SLEV antibodies in sera was detected in Alouatta caraya (11.6%; 5/43), Sapajus nigritus (12.5%; 8/64), and S. cay (30.8%; 8/26) monkeys with the HI assay. Of the monkeys, 2.3% (1/42) of A. caraya, 6.3% 94/64) of S. nigritus, and 15.4% (4/26) of S. cay were positive for SLEV in the MNT. Additionally, SLEV antibodies were detected by HI in 39.1% (9/23) of the horses evaluated in this study. Arboviruses were not isolated from any blood sample. Conclusions These results confirmed the presence of SLEV in nonhuman primates and horses from southern Brazil. These findings most likely represent the first detection of this virus in nonhuman primates beyond the Amazon region. The detection of SLEV in animals within a geographical region distant from the Amazon basin suggests that there may be widespread and undiagnosed dissemination of this disease in Brazil.

Cerdocyon thous (Linnaeus, 1766) é o canídeo neotropical mais amplamente distribuído e habita principalmente ambientes florestados. Este animal possui hábito alimentar onívoro generalista e demonstra capacidade de utilizar ambientes perturbados pela ação do homem. O objetivo deste trabalho foi descrever sua dieta através da análise de 30 conteúdos estomacais de espécimes atropelados, provenientes de um mosaico constituído por Floresta Ombrófila Mista, Floresta Estacional Semidecidual, Campos Naturais e vegetação exótica. Os itens foram quantificados em freqüência de ocorrência (F.O.) e porcentagem de ocorrência (P.O.). No total foram identificados 64 itens, distribuídos em 171 ocorrências. De acordo com o método F.O., itens vegetais ocorreram em 93,3% das amostras, itens animais em 86,7% e rejeitos humanos em 16.6%. Entre os vegetais, os frutos apresentaram a maior F.O. (92,9%), seguido das folhas (53,6%) e flores (10,7%). Syagrus romanzoffianum (Cham.) Glassman, 1968 e a espécie exótica Hovenia dulcis Thunberg se destacaram entre os frutos consumidos (30% cada), e Poaceae entre as folhas consumidas. Dentre os animais, 73,3% foram invertebrados, com destaque para Orthoptera e Coleoptera (36,7% cada), e 63,3% foram vertebrados, destacando-se os mamíferos (33,3%). Em relação ao método P.O. houve a supervalorização de invertebrados (98,1%) devido ao consumo de formigas e cupins observado no estômago de um indivíduo. Em geral, C. thous apresentou uma dieta conforme o esperado. Seus hábitos alimentares generalistas podem influenciar positivamente sua sobrevivência em ambientes alterados. Este trabalho ainda compara diferentes métodos de análises da dieta e discute alguns comportamentos oportunistas de C. thous, como o consumo de espécies exóticas e o uso do ambiente de silvicultura para a caça.

Cerdocyon thous (Linnaeus, 1766) is the most widespread neotropical canid, most commonly inhabiting forested areas. This animal is a generalist omnivore that is able to use environments disturbed by human activities. The aim of this study was to describe its diet through the stomach content analysis of 30 samples obtained from specimens that were run over in a mosaic composed by Araucaria Pine Forest, Semidecidual Seasonal Forest, natural grasslands, and exotic vegetation. The items were quantified by frequency of occurrence (F.O.) and percentage of occurrence (P.O.). A total of 64 food items were found among 171 occurrences. According to F.O. method, plant items corresponded to 93.3% of the occurrences, followed by animal items (86.7%) and human rejects (16.6%). Among plants, fruits accounted for 92.9% of the occurrences, followed by leaves (53.6%) and flowers (10.7%). Syagrus romanzoffianum (Cham.) Glassman, 1968 and the exotic Hovenia dulcis Thunberg were the most consumed fruits (30% each), and the most consumed leaves were Poaceae. Among preyed animals, the F.O. was 73.3% for invertebrates (mostly Orthoptera and Coleoptera, 36.7% each) and 63.3% for vertebrates (mostly mammals, 33.3%). Regarding the P.O. method, there was an overestimation of invertebrates (98.1%) due to the presence of ants and termites in the stomach of a single individual. In general, C. thous presented its usual diet. Its generalistic feeding habits can positively influence its survival in altered environments. This study also compares different methods for dietary analysis and discusses some opportunistic behaviors of C. thous, such as the consumption of exotic species and the use of silviculture areas as hunting sites.
