Abstract The objective was to evaluate the chemical composition and in vitro fermentation of spineless cactus of the genus Nopalea, F-21 (Nopalea cochenillifera Dyck), IPA-Sertânia (Nopalea cochenillifera Dyck) and Miúda (Nopalea cochenillifera Salm Dyck), in different phenophases. There was no effect (P < 0.05) of the phenological phases of spineless cactus on DM, ash, OM, EE, and CP. Varieties F-21 and Miúda presented higher values of DM and OM, whereas the CP was higher for IPA-Sertânia. The contents of NDF, ADF, and ADL, as well as the fractions of carbohydrates B2 and C were higher in the mature stage, irrespective of the variety. The Miúda variety showed higher levels of NFC and fractions A + B1 and the lower levels of pectin compared to the F-21 and IPA-Sertânia varieties, but not differ of TC to F-21. The volume of gas produced via the degradation of NFC was higher for young phenological phases. The young and intermediate stages showed a higher in vitro digestibility of DM. Based on the results, varieties IPA-Sertânia and Miúda have a high potential for use in animal feed because of their high nutritional quality. Mature cladodes showed a higher fibrous fraction and lower digestibility in all varieties. RESUMO O aporte de resíduos vegetais no solo proporcionado pelos sistemas conservacionistas de manejo aumenta a quantidade de substrato, altera a fertilidade e aumenta a atividade biológica do solo. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a influencia dos sistemas de manejo nos atributos químicos e na atividade microbiana do solo sob cultivo de mandioca. Com delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 2 x 3 x 2, foram avaliados dois sistemas de cultivo mínimo (somente roçado; roçado e incorporado), três tipos de cobertura (pousio; Crotalaria juncea L.; Canavalia ensiformis L.) e duas profundidades (0-0,10 e 0,10-0,20 m), com quatro repetições. Foram avaliados a produção de massa seca das coberturas, os atributos químicos e a atividade microbiana do solo. Não houve diferenças entre sistemas de cultivo mínimo e a C. juncea apresentou a maior produção de massa seca. Os teores de potássio e cálcio foram superiores nas áreas com resíduos de pousio e C. juncea na camada de 0-0,10 m; no entanto, estes nutrientes diferem na camada do solo abaixo 0,10-0,20 m. Não houve diferenças entre a respiração basal de microorganismo do solo em ambas as profundidades e coberturas, mas o carbono da biomassa microbiana foi superior na camada mais superficial, onde há mais substrato disponível para os microorganismos do solo.

ABSTRACT Conservationist systems of crop management increases the amount of substrate, alters fertility and increases soil biological activity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of soil management systems on the chemical attributes and microbial activity of soil under cassava crop. The experiment was set as completely randomized design in a factorial scheme of 2 x 3 x 2, being two systems of cultivation (minimum with only mown; minimum with mown and incorporation), three types of soil coverage (fallow; Crotalaria juncea L.; Canavalia ensiformis L.) and two soil depths (0-0.10 and 0.10-0.20 m), with four repetitions. The production of dry mass from cover crops, the soil chemical attributes and the soil microbial activity were evaluated. There were no differences between management systems, and the C. juncea cover crop presented superior dry mass production among the soil coverages. The concentrations of soil Ca and K were greater in the fallow coverage and C. juncea areas in the 0-0.10 m soil layer; however, these nutrients differ in the soil layer below (0.10-0.20 m). There were no differences for the basal respiration of soil microorganisms in both soil depths or among soil coverage, but the carbon from microbial biomass was superior in the most superficial soil layer where more substrate is available to soil microorganisms.

Os testes bioquímicos baseados na integridade de membranas são importantes na verificação do potencial fisiológico de lotes de sementes. Assim, este trabalho teve por objetivo determinar a viabilidade de testes bioquímicos de condutividade elétrica e de lixiviação de potássio na avaliação do vigor de sementes de Mimosa caesalpiniifolia. No teste de condutividade elétrica utilizaram-se duas amostras de sementes (25 e 50), dois volumes de água deionizada (50 e 75 mL), duas temperaturas (25 e 30 ºC) e cinco períodos de embebição (4, 8, 12, 16 e 24-h). Nos testes de condutividade elétrica e lixiviação de potássio, cinco lotes de sementes foram embebidos separadamente durante 4 e 8-h à temperatura de 30 °C. Os testes bioquímicos de condutividade elétrica e de lixiviação de potássio mostraram ser eficientes na avaliação do vigor de sementes de M. caesalpiniifolia, quando realizados com 25 sementes imersas em 50 mL de água deionizada, durante 8-h à temperatura de 30 °C.

Biochemical tests based on membrane integrity are important in selecting the physiological potential of seed lots. Thus, the objective of this work was to adapt methodologies of biochemical tests of electric conduction and potassium leaching in the evaluation of the vigor of Mimosa caesalpiniifolia seeds. Two quantity of seeds (25 and 50), two volumes of deionized water (50 and 75 mL), two temperatures (25 and 30 °C) and five soaking periods (4, 8, 12, 16 and 24-h) where used for the validity of electrical conductivity test. The potash leaching test was carried out with five seed lots in the periods of 4 and 8-h of soaking under a temperature of 30 °C. The biochemical tests of electric conduction and potassium leaching were efficient in the evaluation of vigor of M. caesalpiniifolia seeds, when 25 seeds were immersed in 50 mL of deionized water, during a period of 8-h at 30 °C.

As palmeiras ornamentais são amplamente utilizadas em projetos paisagísticos e de urbanização em todo o mundo, no entanto, investigação relativa à influência do armazenamento na viabilidade de sementes desta família é incipiente. O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar diferentes condições de armazenamento sobre a classificação e a qualidade fisiológica de sementes de P. pacifica. Para este fim, fez-se o armazenamento de sementes desta espécie durante os períodos de 0, 30, 60, 90 e 120 dias em três condições: em ambiente de laboratório (25 ± 4 °C; 40% de U.R.) em papel permeável e plástico semipermeável e em refrigerador (5 ± 4 °C; 28% de U.R.) em plástico semipermeável. Foram avaliadas as seguintes variáveis em cada período de armazenamento: grau de umidade (%), emergência de plântulas (%) em bandejas plásticas preenchidas com areia em condição de laboratório (25 ± 4 °C), comprimento total (parte aérea + raiz) (cm) e massa seca total (mg) de plântulas. As sementes armazenadas em ambiente de laboratório apresentaram um aumento progressivo na porcentagem de emergência de plântulas até os 37 e 45 dias para plástico (67%) e papel (74%), respectivamente, em detrimento daquelas acondicionadas em embalagem plástica em refrigerador, no qual a emergência das plântulas foi nula (0%) a partir dos 50 dias. As sementes de P. pacifica são fisiologicamente classificadas como intermediárias, pois são intolerantes ao armazenamento sob baixas temperaturas, mas mantém a qualidade fisiológica quando armazenadas em embalagem permeável ou semipermeável, na condição de ambiente de laboratório.

Ornamental palms are widely used in landscaping projects and urbanization around the world, however, research related to influence of storage on seeds viability of this family is incipient. The objective of present study was to evaluate different storage conditions on the physiological classification and quality of P. pacifica seeds. To this end, there was the seed storage of this specie during periods of 0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 days in three conditions: in laboratory environment (25 ± 4 °C; 40% of U.H.) in permeable paper and semipermeable plastic, and in a refrigerator (5 ± 4 °C; 28% of U.H.) in semipermeable plastic. The following variables were evaluated in each storage period: moisture content (%), emergency of seedlings (%) in plastic trays with sand in laboratory environment (25 ± 4 °C; 40% of U.H.), total length (aerial part + root) (cm) and total dry weight (mg) of seedlings. The seeds stored in laboratory environment showed a progressive increase on percentage of seedling emergence to 37 and 45 days for plastics (67%) and paper (74%) respectively, rather than those packed in plastic bag in refrigerator in which the seedling emergence was zero (0%) after 50 days. Seeds of P. pacifica may be physiologically classified as intermediate because are intolerant to storage at low temperatures but maintains the physiological quality when stored in permeable or semipermeable package, in laboratory environment condition.

O sistema de plantio direto é uma alternativa viável para o uso sustentável dos solos. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar a influência do sistema plantio direto com diferentes tempos de implantação e do plantio convencional sobre os atributos químicos e os estoques de C de um Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo do cerrado piauiense. Amostras de solo foram coletadas nas camadas de 0-5, 5-10, 10-20 e 20-40 cm em sistema de plantio convencional (PC) e plantio direto (PD) com 2 (PD2), 4 (PD4) e 6 (PD6) anos de implantação, além de uma área sob floresta nativa de cerrado (FNC). Foram determinados o pH em água, P extraível (Pext), bases trocáveis, Al, acidez potencial (H+Al), carbono orgânico total (COT) e carbono da biomassa microbiana (Cmic). A adoção do sistema plantio direto aumentou o pH, os teores de P e de bases trocáveis do solo, em comparação com o PC. Em relação ao PC, os estoques de COT e Cmic aumentaram 34 e 99% no PD2, 47 e 92% no PD4 e 61 e 108% no PD6, respectivamente, na camada superficial de 0-20 cm. A implantação do sistema plantio direto melhora os atributos químicos e aumenta os estoques de carbono orgânico total e microbiano do solo e seu uso contínuo contribui para a qualidade do solo em áreas do cerrado piauiense.

No-tillage adoption has been considered a viable alternative for sustainable soil use. This work aimed to evaluate the influence of no-tillage system with different times of adoption and conventional tillage on chemical attributes and carbon stocks in an Oxisol of the savannah of Piauí in Northeastern Brazil. Soil samples in the 0-5, 5-10, 10-20 and 20-40 cm layers were collected in conventional tillage (CT) no-tillage (NT) with 2 (NT2), 4 (NT4) and 6 (NT6) years of adoption and native forest (NF). The following chemical properties were evaluated: pH, extractable P, exchangeable cations, Al, potential acidity (H+Al), total organic carbon (TOC) and microbial biomass carbon (Cmic). NT adoption increased pH, extractable P and exchangeable cations contents. Compared to conventional tillage, TOC and Cmic stocks increased 34 and 99% (NT2), 47 and 92% (NT4) and 61 and 108% (NT6), respectively, in the superficial layer (0-20 cm). No-tillage adoption improves chemical attributes and increases total organic carbon and microbial carbon and its continuous use contributes to soil quality in savannah soils of Piaui state.
