Abstract Paper aims The Solid Waste Collection (SWC) process is fundamental to maintaining the healthiness of cities and protecting the environment. There is a lack of methodologies for integrating process quality control techniques to evaluate SWC performance. This article develops a methodological implementation with a simulation-based optimization technique to model SWC process. Originality Development of new simulation-based optimization techniques and tools that improve and complement the traditional analysis of variables in SWC Process. Research method Feasible solutions are obtained through an optimization stage and then solutions are used as inputs for the simulation stage. Main findings There is a high correlation between the total tons collected and the total time. It is possible to optimize the collection routes by integrating process quality control techniques to reduce the total travel time, which will reduce the operating costs and the environmental impact. Simulation results demonstrate a reduction in error of over 90% for each day, with an optimization of 55% in total times. Abstract Paper aims The objective of this work is to develop a comprehensive group decision model to support public managers in choosing the best location for the construction of landfills based on a strategy known as “regionalization” (collaborative construction of landfills). Originality The proposed group decision model innovates when considering the regionalization strategy in a multi-DM environment based on a framework for choosing a voting procedure. Research method The model is divided into three stages: (i) individual assessment of preferences; (ii) choosing a voting procedure; and, (iii) group aggregation and recommendation. First, it uses MCDA/M to elicit DMs' preferences and obtain individual rankings; then, a framework for choosing a voting procedure (VP) to aggregate individual preferences and obtain a collective choice. Abstract Paper aims The aim of this study is to develop a bayesian network model for selecting maintenance strategies. Originality This model evaluates the consequences and complexity of breakdowns, but also integrates the intelligent predictive maintenance policy, taking into account aspects such as available technology, diagnostic tools, staff training and the use of artificial intelligence, which can be applied at all levels. Research method A literature review was conducted to map the criteria used in the selection of maintenance strategies. The KANO model was then employed to select the criteria for the model, and a system of rules was established for the selection of maintenance strategies. The Monte Carlo method was used for the simulation of possible combinations in consideration of the rule system. Using this data, the bayesian network was learned, trained, and validated. Abstract Paper aims To compare the relevance of Six Sigma metrics with geometric and multivariate capacity indicators to assess the performance of service quality dimensions. Originality A novel method based on Six Sigma metrics with geometric and multivariate capacity indicators is proposed to assess the performance of service quality dimensions. Research method A quantitative evaluative and, on a second level, comparative approach is addressed, for which primary information from 12 periods of a tourism service company was used. Main findings It is shown that multivariate capacity indicators are more demanding, the geometric capacity indicator being the most demanding with a value of 0.7091, followed by the Mean Capacity Indicator with a result of 0.7094, that is, these are more rigorous than the Six Sigma metrics used worldwide. Abstract Paper aims This study aims to identify the occupational risks to which workers in the agricultural sector are exposed during the development of their activities on rural properties. Originality This study’s originality lies in filling a gap in identifying the main risks to which workers in the agricultural sector are exposed. The study identifies which risks they are exposed to in the literature. Research method A systematic review of the literature over the last five years (2017-2021) revealed 56 articles that identified at least one occupational risk to workers in the agricultural sector. Main findings The bibliometric analysis indicated that the studies are divided into agricultural (33.9%) and animal (66.1%) production. Abstract Paper aims Disasters mark the last century's history, impacting society's security. In Brazil, National Security is defined as the condition that allows preserving territorial integrity and ensure citizens the exercise of constitutional rights and duties. Amid this scenario, this research aims to analyze how operations performed by the Brazilian Armed Forces in national disaster cases contribute to restoring national security. Originality The originality of the research concerns the topic covered - national security based on a military vision - and the combination of methods used for analysis. Research method For developing the research, scoping review, system thinking, and system dynamics methodologies are employed. Main findings Two hypotheses were raised regarding the employment of military forces in humanitarian operations aimed at national security, considering proactive and reactive strategies. Abstract Paper aims This study investigates the nanostores' endurance in serving underserved regions in developing countries. The research explores how various competing retail formats influence market choice and demand. We used data from a survey conducted in Sabana Centro, Colombia, in this study. Originality We believe this is the first study examining the nanostores' resilience in serving emerging markets under this novel hybrid technique. Research method We propose a multi-agent-based model mimicking nanostore survival and resilience in a competitive market. Household agents use a discrete choice model to select their preferred retail format for household purchases based on location, price, and service levels. Considering supply breakdowns, we tested the outcoming model under different disruption scenarios. Main findings Results indicated nanostores' great resiliency in competitive markets, specifically in peripheral areas, which are usually neglected by other retail formats. This suggests that this retail format can strategically complement household supply in underserved areas, displaying the importance of supporting these channels and generating tools that improve their performance in the market. Abstract Paper aims Developing a conceptual framework for modeling the "Deliver" business process of the Mineral Supply Chain (MiSC) upstream segment, based on a standardized perspective. Originality A novel approach is introduced that adapts the Supply Chain Operation Reference (SCOR) and the Exploration and Mining Enterprise Reference (EM) models to standardize the "Deliver" of the MiSC's upstream segment. Abstract Paper aims This paper proposes a warehouse design framework for evaluating the most robust combination of layout alternatives, tactical (picking, storage) and operational (routing) control policies, considering simultaneously the service level, costs and resource utilization criteria. Originality We applied an innovative Morphological Analysis to reduce the number of alternatives and evaluate the uncertainties in warehouse design. We also address the effect of congestion and options for configuring the layout of aisles. Originality This study pioneers an investigation into trends in applying Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment techniques within the agricultural and food processing sectors, with a comprehensive consideration of environmental, economic, and social perspectives. Abstract Paper aims This study is grounded in the supply chain resilience (SCRES) capabilities literature and the dynamic capabilities theory (DCT), which is used to develop a framework of dynamic SCRES capabilities for global supply chain disruptions. Originality This study explores firms' adapting, responding, and learning capabilities in the initial outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic 2019 (COVID-19) in the Irish context. Research method The research methodology was based on semi-structured interviews with supply chain leaders of international operations, extending between Ireland and the UK. Data analysis utilises a hybrid thematic analysis approach that integrates inductive codes with deductive priori-driven constructs. Main findings Five significant impacts of COVID-19 on supply chain operations are revealed: capacity and resource constraints, supply issues, demand spikes, supply chain skills shortages, and human resource factors. Furthermore, firms' high-order SCRES capabilities during a pandemic are related to their adaptation, response, and learning capabilities. Operational capabilities and resilience practices support these high-order capabilities. However, the empirical evidence indicates that resilience practices overlap across SCRES capabilities.
