Abstract: The study aims to explore how belonging to a professional group shapes the relationship of socio-educational agents in Rio de Janeiro with politics, influenced by values and worldviews constructed both in personal life and at work. The text analyzes the professional ethos of the agents, highlighting their valorization of individual merit and moral criticism of behaviors considered negative. Their political engagement is reflected in their positions on incarcerated adolescents and socio-educational policy. Despite some social advancement, they maintain ties to their origins, generating feelings of injustice and insecurity. Abstract: A concept of growing popularity in the Brazilian public and academic debate, Bolsonarism has been the subject of several studies and important interpretations of contemporary Brazil. This article aims to analyze the contours and presuppositions of the term based on the analysis of an element often attributed to it: its anti-systemic dimension. To this end, we critically analyze two of the most influential books on Bolsonarism, by Marcos Nobre and Rodrigo Nunes, which focus on its fundamental antagonism to the Brazilian political system (and to the “establishment” in general). Based on an analysis of the concept of Bolsonarism constructed by the authors, we argue that this conceptual construction around the system-antisystem axis sublimates one of its central elements, the authoritarian radicalization of the traditional right, by presupposing (a) a reiteration of the state-society dualism (typical of a long tradition of Brazilian political thought); (b) an overlapping of different right-wing actors (ultra-right, traditional right, new right, Bolsonaro); and (c) an unmediated import of concepts and contexts that are relatively exogenous to the Brazilian case . Abstract: This article explores the interactions between pastors and evangelicals during the 2022 election campaign on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. Through interviews and ethnographic observations, I show how the pastor of a small neighbourhood evangelical church introduces political issues into services and tries to shape the electoral preferences of the congregation. I observe that political discourse is limited and regulated by economic concerns and ceremonial norms. I then examine how the faithful and the pastoral team react to the increasing politicisation of sermons and try to convey their own political representations. Finally, I analyse how the support given to candidate Jair Bolsonaro generates conflict and dissension among the congregation, leading some of them to distance themselves and temporarily withdraw from attending worship. Abstract: This article reflects on the Brazilian political experience between 2019 and 2022, using the metaphor of destruction as a possible analytical resource. It starts from a critique of conceptual logic and, as an alternative, proposes a phenomenology of destruction, aimed at detecting and presenting the disfiguring factors imposed on Brazilian society during the period in question. Abstract: This article conducts an in-depth examination of the issue of equality within Pierre Rosanvallon’s democratic theory. The focus is on his work La Société des égaux, juxtaposed with other theories of justice. Alongside the introduction and conclusion, the article is structured into three distinct sections. The initial section offers an overview of the first three segments of La Société des égaux. Rosanvallon’s arguments to demonstrate (i) the limitations of the Rawlsian theory centered on the concept of “rending of the veil of ignorance”; (ii) the inherent complexities in the theory of radical equal opportunity, influenced by Ronald Dworkin’s ideas; and (iii) the challenges of establishing a conception of justice among theorists operating within a society characterized by widespread competition. The third section elaborates on Rosanvallon’s notion of “equality as relation”. Resumo: Este artigo apresenta um estudo do problema da igualdade na teoria democrática de Pierre Rosanvallon, a partir de uma análise circunstanciada da obra La Société des égaux, confrontando-a com as outras teorias da justiça. Além da introdução e da conclusão, o artigo está dividido em três segmentos. No primeiro, é oferecida uma visão panorâmica das três primeiras partes de La Société des égaux; no segundo, examinamos os argumentos utilizados por Rosanvallon para mostrar (i) a prescrição da teoria rawlsiana a partir da noção de “dilaceramento do véu de ignorância”; (ii) a ambiguidade da teoria da igualdade radical de chances, a partir do diálogo com a obra de Ronald Dworkin; e (iii) a impossibilidade de uma concepção de justiça entre os teóricos da sociedade da concorrência generalizada. Abstract: This study conducts a multi-level analysis on the impact of international human rights norms and pressures, criticizing the spiral model from the field of International Relations. Using an analytical framework beyond state-centric perspectives, we explored three critical dimensions: the social origins of human rights violations, the political-legal intermediation within civil society, and the internal bureaucratic features of international human rights organizations. While influential, the spiral model falls short in comprehensively addressing these dimensions. Abstract: This article aims at analyzing the actions of the Catholic Church and the formation of Grass-roots Ecclesial Communities in the Baixada Fluminense region during the Dictatorship (1964-85). In disputes over the memory of the Dictatorship (1964-88), the Catholic Church appears almost exclusively associated with its progressive wing and resistance to the military regime. In this interpretative key, the Grass-roots Ecclesial Communities are seen as an expression of the victory of a progressive project, and not as a result of a consensus on the need to expand the participation of lay people for the expansion of the Catholic faith in Brazilian territory. Resumo: Este artigo tem como foco a atuação da Igreja Católica e a formação das Comunidades Eclesiais de Base (CEBs) na região da Baixada Fluminense durante a ditadura militar brasileira (1964-1988). Nas disputas pela memória sobre a ditadura, a Igreja Católica aparece quase que exclusivamente associada ao clero progressista e à resistência ao regime. Nessa chave interpretativa, as CEBs são vistas como expressão da vitória de um projeto progressista, e não como resultado de um consenso da instituição em relação à necessidade de ampliação da participação de leigos para a expansão da fé católica em território brasileiro. Abstract: This article aims to analyze the reestablishment of commercial relations and political détente between Venezuela and the United States under the Biden government, especially from 2022 onwards, characterizing this rapprochement as a pragmatic movements on both parts. On the American side, this pragmatism is understood as the result of the need to realign positions and relationships at regional and global levels due to the dispute for hegemony with China. Abstract: Meritocracy has been asserted as a principle of justice or criticized as an ideology from different approaches that focus on certain aspects of modernity and capitalism. This study aims to reconstruct the concept of merit by relying on its context of emergence and the development of forms of labor organization within capitalism, especially described following historical and sociological labor research. For this, this study discusses the most common critiques of meritocracy and the meanings of the idea of merit in three distinct dimensions: combating privileges, individual performance, and merit based on results. This study reflects on the importance of grounding the critique of meritocracy not only in its categorical denial as a neoliberal ideology but also based on social research surrounding the labor structure to attempt to reconstruct its conditioning factors in a society of peripheral capitalism such as Brazil. Abstract: This study examines critiques from several strands of contemporary political theory toward Rawls’ political theory. These critiques converge to suggest that, although Rawls claims that his theory is political, it would be considered a non-political or anti-political theory. This study aims to analyze these objections to the inadequacy of Rawls’ theory as political theory to understand the limits and scope of this critical interpretation. To do so, this research will analyze the criticisms of Rawlsian theory that have been formulated by Habermas, Walzer, and Mouffe. The central question is to understand if Rawls’ theory, which is considered by many as responsible for contributing to the revitalization of contemporary political theory, would ultimately be a non-political theory. This study intends to evaluate the arguments that distance the Rawlsian project from the political realm, especially from public political discussion and political conflicts. Abstract: This study explores the central importance of hegemony in the work of Ernesto Laclau, highlighting its conceptual transformations over time. Laclau adopts an interdisciplinary approach, engaging with various theoretical currents such as Marxism, post-structuralism, and psychoanalysis, and providing a comprehensive and complex understanding of hegemony. Throughout his work, the author shows the significance of shifts in approach, such as when he replaces the emphasis on antagonism with the concept of displacement and integrates the notion of deconstruction as fundamental to understanding hegemony. Laclau adota uma abordagem interdisciplinar, dialogando com diversas correntes teóricas, como o marxismo, o pós-estruturalismo e a psicanálise, proporcionando uma compreensão abrangente e complexa da hegemonia.
