ABSTRACT This article analyzes the reduction of the preposition para (to, for) to pra in Brazilian Portuguese. Sequences of (previous word + para or pra) selected from a corpus of spoken language were statistically analyzed to understand which factors could be playing a role in this reduction. A statistical analysis of the 30 most frequent sequences of (previous word + para or pra) was carried out to identify the factors that seem to influence this reduction. The concepts of string frequency (Krug 1998, 2003, Bush 2001), relative frequency (Torres Cacoullos 2006), and token frequency (Bybee 2002a, 2002b, 2006) were adopted to verify whether frequency of usage in any of these forms would influence the reduction. Results show that relative frequency favors the reduction of para to pra, alongside word class, number of syllables, and stressed syllable. Based on this analysis, the lexical storage of multiword sequences is discussed, along with its effects for processes of linguistic variation and change.

RESUMO Neste artigo, analisa-se a redução da preposição para a pra no português brasileiro em sequências de (palavra anterior + para ou pra). O Corpus LAEL de língua falada foi adotado para fazer buscas por essas sequências. Considerando-se as 30 sequências mais frequentes de (palavra anterior + para ou pra), análises estatísticas foram realizadas para observar que fatores interferiam nessa redução. Os conceitos de frequência da sequência (Krug 1998, 2003, Bush 2001), frequência relativa (Torres Cacoullos 2006) e frequência de ocorrência (Bybee 2002a, 2002b, 2006) foram utilizados para verificar se a repetição das palavras em alguma dessas formas desempenhava algum papel nas sequências em que para se reduz a pra. Observou-se que a frequência relativa favorece a redução de para a pra, juntamente com classe de palavra, número de sílabas e tonicidade. A partir desse fenômeno, discute-se a possível estocagem de sequências de duas ou mais palavras no léxico mental dos falantes, bem como as consequências disso para processos de variação e mudança linguística.

ABSTRACT Based on a question about the social dimension’s place in a socio-functionalist approach, the aim of this paper is threefold: (1) to reflect on the functional and social domains of language made up of multilayers, (2) to propose an interdomain articulation represented by a socio-functional model, and (3) to show its applicability to two phenomena in variation/change. The notion of functional domain is based on Givón (2001; 2002), Hopper (1991) and Görski e Tavares (2017), and the notion of social domain is basically anchored in Eckert (2008; 2016; 2018; 2019), Silverstein (2003), and Kiesling (2013). The interdomain articulation is illustrated with the use of interactive discourse markers sabe? (‘you know’) and entende? (you understand?) and the -STE segment added to verbal and non-verbal base, based on the works of Valle (2014) e Amaral (2020), respectively. We believe that we advanced in theoretical and methodological discussions on the interface between functionalism and variationist sociolinguistics by highlighting the social meaning and its articulation with the semantic-pragmatic meaning as well as proposing an integrated analytical practice.

RESUMO A partir de um questionamento sobre o lugar da dimensão social numa abordagem sociofuncionalista, o objetivo deste artigo é refletir sobre os domínios funcional e social da linguagem constituídos por multicamadas, propor uma articulação interdomínios representada por um modelo sociofuncional e mostrar sua aplicabilidade a dois fenômenos em variação/mudança. A noção de domínio funcional é baseada em Givón (2001; 2002), Hopper (1991) e Görski e Tavares (2017), e a noção de domínio social é ancorada basicamente em Eckert (2008; 2016; 2018; 2019), Silverstein (2003) e Kiesling (2013). A articulação interdomínios é ilustrada com o uso dos marcadores discursivos interacionais sabe? e entende? e do segmento -STE agregado a bases verbais e não verbais, com base nos trabalhos de Valle (2014) e Amaral (2020), respectivamente. Acreditamos ter avançado nas discussões teórico-metodológicas sobre a interface entre Funcionalismo e Sociolinguística Variacionista, colocando luz no significado social e sua articulação com o significado semântico-pragmático, e propondo uma prática analítica integrada.

ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to propose some elements for creating a new research agenda for the shaping of Modern Brazilian Portuguese during the period of Colonial Brazil. To do so, we advance the hypothesis that there has been a linguistic variety acquired by white Portuguese descendants born in Brazil, intervening between Classical Portuguese - one of the languages found in Colonial Brazil - and the prestigious strand of Modern Brazilian Portuguese. We expose linguistic and socio-historical evidence that put forward the validity of this hypothesis. We then examine some theoretical and methodological implications for the study of this variety, from a microcomparative syntactic viewpoint. Finally, we propose some research questions, centered on the identification of conservative and innovative features in Modern Brazilian Portuguese from the study of Colonial Brazilian Portuguese.

RESUMO O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar elementos para a constituição de uma nova agenda de pesquisas em relação aos estudos sobre a formação do português brasileiro moderno durante o Brasil Colônia. Para isso, apresentaremos a hipótese de que, entre o português clássico - uma das línguas presentes no Brasil Colônia - e a constituição do português brasileiro moderno em sua vertente prestigiada, houve uma variedade linguística adquirida pelos brancos nascidos no Brasil aqui denominada de português colonial brasileiro. Exporemos indícios linguísticos e sócio-históricos que sugerem a validade dessa hipótese. Além disso, discutiremos algumas implicações teórico-metodológicas para o estudo dessa variedade a partir de um ponto de vista da sintaxe microcomparativa. Finalmente, proporemos algumas questões de pesquisa, centradas na possibilidade de identificação de traços conservadores e inovadores do português brasileiro moderno a partir do estudo do português colonial brasileiro.

ABSTRACT This article reflects on the role of images in rhetorical techniques. The theme will be Covid-19-related deaths in Brazil. To this end, two covers from Brazilian newspapers namely, O Globo, from Rio de Janeiro, and Folha de S. Paulo, from São Paulo, compose the corpus. More specifically, the covers were published in the editions issued after the country registered over 100,000 and 200,000 Covid-19-related deaths. The objective is to show the argumentative role of metonymy and repetition in the corpus texts. The images presented in the study were relevant to the two cover compositions. O Globo used photos of several people who died from the disease. Folha de S. Paulo reproduced shoes that had been worn by some of the victims. The analysis is based on theoretical assumptions about rhetorical images by rhetoric and new rhetoric scholars.

RESUMO Este artigo busca refletir sobre o funcionamento de uma das técnicas retóricas usadas em discursos: as figuras. A abordagem será feita com base em mortes provocadas por Covid-19 no Brasil. Para isso, consideram-se como corpus de estudo duas capas de jornais brasileiros, o carioca O Globo e o paulistano Folha de S. Paulo, mais especificamente as edições que registram quando o país ultrapassou as 100 mil e as 200 mil mortes pelo coronavírus. O objetivo é mostrar o papel argumentativo que a metonímia e a repetição imprimem aos textos em questão. Essas figuras foram relevantes para a composição das duas capas. A de O Globo utiliza fotos de várias pessoas que morreram por causa da doença. A da Folha de S. Paulo reproduziu calçados usados por algumas das vítimas. A análise se fundamenta em pressupostos teóricos de estudiosos da Retórica e da Nova Retórica, especialmente no que diz respeito às figuras retóricas.

ABSTRACT To verify if the senses of the verb pegar (‘to grasp’) in Brazilian Portuguese form a radial category motivated by sociocognitive mechanisms, this article analyzes its occurrences in the Discourse & Grammar corpus collected in Rio de Janeiro. First, it verifies which is the most recurrent form, variations and/or regularities of the verb with AntConc 3.5.8. Then, it qualitatively interprets each case in the light of context and concepts such as radial category (Lakoff, 1987), image-schema transformations, and metonymic and metaphorical mappings (Johnson, 1987; Lakoff, 1987). Six groups of meanings were found, all of them structured by the MOVEMENT-PATH schemas. The extensions derive from the OBJECT schema metaphorization, schema transformations, and related changes in focus, as well as from metaphors and metonyms triggered by linguistic, discursive and contextual cues. The prototypical sense is ‘to hold objects’ (the TRAJECTOR IS A CONTAINER). The most peripheral senses are to have an idea and to move in a direction (IDEAS ARE OBJECTS and GOALS ARE LOCATIONS, respectively). The senses include ‘to hold’, ‘attack’, ‘pick up’, ‘move along discourse’, ‘speculate’, and ‘follow in a direction’.

RESUMO Visando identificar se os sentidos do verbo pegar formam uma categoria radial face aos mecanismos sociocognitivos que os motivam, o presente artigo analisa suas ocorrências no corpus D&G do Rio de Janeiro. Primeiro verifica qual é a forma mais recorrente, suas possíveis variações e/ou regularidades por meio do software AntConc 3.5.8. Em seguida, as interpreta qualitativamente no contexto de uso e à luz dos conceitos de categoria radial (Lakoff, 1987), esquemas imagéticos, suas transformações e mapeamentos metafóricos e metonímicos (Johnson, 1987; Lakoff, 1987). Foram encontrados seis grupos de sentido estruturados pelos esquemas MOVIMENTO-TRAJETÓRIA. As extensões derivam da metaforização do esquema OBJETO, das transformações de esquema e consequentes alterações de foco, assim como das metáforas e metonímias que os licenciam, engatilhadas por pistas linguístico-discursivas e contextuais. No centro prototípico encontra-se o pegar objetos em que TRAJETOR É CONTÊINER. Nas radiais mais periféricas, encontram-se o pegar ideias e o pegar orientacional em que IDEIAS SÃO OBJETOS e LOCAL DE CHEGADA É OBJETO, respectivamente. Dentre os sentidos, encadearam-se segurar, agredir, buscar, mover-se no discurso, conjecturar e seguir uma direção.

ABSTRACT The analysis of verbo-visual argumentation in advertising is a crucial and problematic area of research. Despite such importance, the methods used to interpret and reconstruct the structure of arguments expressed through verbal and visual media capture only isolated dimensions of this complex phenomenon. This article aims to present a methodology for the reconstruction and analysis of “dual-mode” arguments in advertisements, combining analytical tools developed by pragmatics, argumentation theory, text, and discourse linguistics. To this end, an advertisement is analyzed in five steps. The first step is the analysis of its context, textual genre, and images. The second, third, and fourth steps consist of enriching the first semantic representations through the inclusion of its polyphonic articulations and presuppositions, its explicatures, and its dialogical functions and illocutionary forces, in this order. The final step is to provide the construction of argumentation schemes. The development of this methodology may be of great value for the analysis of other verbal-visual discourse genres, including those that currently circulate in digital media.

RESUMO A análise da argumentação verbo-visual na publicidade é uma área de pesquisa: crucial e problemática. Apesar dessa importância, os métodos ainda utilizados para interpretar e reconstruir a estrutura dos argumentos expressos através de meios verbais e visuais capturam apenas dimensões isoladas desse fenômeno complexo. Este artigo objetiva, assim, apresentar uma metodologia para a reconstrução e análise de argumentos “de modo duplo” em anúncios publicitários, combinando os instrumentos analíticos desenvolvidos pela pragmática, teoria da argumentação, linguística dos textos e dos discursos. Um anúncio publicitário processa-se em cinco etapas. A primeira corresponde à análise do seu contexto, do gênero textual e das imagens (etapa 1). Essas primeiras representações semânticas são mais tarde enriquecidas através da inclusão das suas articulações polifónicas e pressuposições (etapa 2), das suas explicaturas (etapa 3) e das suas funções dialógicas e forças ilocutórias (etapa 4). Essas etapas pragmáticas propiciam a construção de esquemas de argumentação (etapa 5). O desenvolvimento desta metodologia pode vir a ser uma mais-valia para a análise de outros gêneros discursivos verbo-visuais, inclusive aqueles que circulam, na atualidade, nos meios digitais.

ABSTRACT On the political scene, Christmas Messages have assumed a statute of tradition, but will their textual plan be fixed or occasional, as Adam (2002) postulates? In order to identify the organizational structure of these texts, a diachronic and contrasting analysis Portugal-Brazil was carried out, focusing on the text’s distribution and segmentation processes (Silva, 2016). Thus, the analysis focused on graphic composition, thematic distribution and, above all, the articulatory mechanisms that ensure textual cohesion (organizers, markers/connectors, chains of reference). The results point to a structure in four blocks - exordium, governmental performance, future commitments, peroration, which is altered according to communicative needs. The initial and final blocks have an emotional tendency, related to Christmas emotions, and the central blocks are of an objective nature, presenting evidence of performance and governmental intentions. Due to the flexibility showed, it is considered that the text plan for these political interventions is occasional, although there are some common segments.

RESUMO Na cena política, as Mensagens de Natal assumiram um estatuto de tradição, mas será o seu plano textual fixo ou ocasional, como postula Adam (2002)? No sentido de identificar a estrutura organizativa destes textos, procedeu-se a uma análise diacrónica de textos de Portugal e do Brasil (produzidos de 2008 a 2020), com foco nos processos de distribuição e segmentação do texto (Silva, 2016). Assim, a análise focou-se na composição gráfica, na distribuição temática e, sobretudo, nos mecanismos articulatórios que asseguram a coesão textual (organizadores, marcadores/conectores, cadeias de referência). Os resultados apontam para uma estrutura em quatro blocos - exórdio, performance governativa, compromissos de futuro, peroração, alterada conforme as necessidades comunicativas. Os blocos inicial e final têm um pendor emotivo, relacionado com a época natalícia e seus valores, e os blocos centrais são de cariz objetivo, apresentando provas do desempenho e intenções governativas. Em virtude da flexibilidade que demonstram, considera-se que o plano de texto destas intervenções políticas é ocasional, não obstante existirem alguns segmentos frequentes.

ABSTRACT To express individuation and cumulativity, natural languages present a significant diversity of grammatical mechanisms that involve lexical, morphological, and syntactic strategies. We intend to demonstrate that, in the Tenetehára language (Tupí-Guaraní), noun incorporation is one of these resources. In this regard, we discuss the syntactic operation of incorporation, which expresses a low degree of individuation of the incorporated term, in addition to resulting in nouns with a cumulative interpretation. Although, for example, there are no articles in this language that can denote definiteness or specificity, non-incorporated objects present a greater degree of individuation when they are contrasted with their incorporated versions. The analysis proposed here is based on elicited linguistic data that comprise the two strategies of noun incorporation in this language: (i) noun incorporation with valence reduction, which involves incorporation of the object of transitive verbs; and (ii) incorporation without valence reduction, which concerns the incorporation of the possessed constituent of noun phrases in the syntactic function of subject of intransitive verbs and object of transitive verbs.

RESUMO Para expressar individuação e cumulatividade, as línguas naturais apresentam uma significativa diversidade de mecanismos gramaticais que envolvem estratégias lexicais, morfológicas e sintáticas. Pretendemos demonstrar que, na língua Tenetehára (Tupí-Guaraní), a incorporação nominal constitui-se como um desses recursos. Para isso, será discutida essa operação sintática, que expressa baixo grau de individuação do termo incorporado, além de resultar ainda em nomes com uma interpretação cumulativa. Embora não haja, por exemplo, artigos nessa língua que possam denotar definitude ou especificidade, objetos não incorporados apresentam maior grau de individuação quando são contrastados com suas versões incorporadas. A análise aqui proposta se fundamenta em dados linguísticos elicitados que compreendem as duas estratégias de incorporação nominal nessa língua: (i) incorporação nominal com redução de valência, que envolve a incorporação do objeto de verbos transitivos; e (ii) incorporação sem diminuição de valência, que diz respeito à incorporação do termo possuído de sintagmas nominais na função sintática de sujeito de verbos intransitivos e objeto de transitivos.

ABSTRACT The article aims to characterize the level of morphological awareness in the primary school and to analyse the possible relationship between morphological awareness and reading and writing. The sample consists of 20 children, who attend the 2nd (n=10) and the 4th year of schooling (n=10). Data collection was performed through the Grelha de Avaliação da Linguagem - Nível Escolar, the Bateria de Avaliação da Consciência Morfológica, the Bateria de Avaliação da Leitura em Português Europeu and an adaptation of evidence from other studies. Results show that the level of morphological awareness of the children of the 4th year is statistically higher than those of the 2nd year, namely in the test of word analogy and decision morphosemantic-affixes, regarding the suffixes. Even so, it was possible to verify significant differences in reading tasks of both groups. There is a correlation between some subtests of morphological awareness and reading and writing.

RESUMO O artigo pretende caracterizar o nível de consciência morfológica no 1º ciclo e analisar a possível relação entre a consciência morfológica e a leitura e escrita. A amostra é constituída por 20 crianças, que frequentam o 2º (n=10) e o 4º ano de escolaridade (n=10). A recolha de dados foi realizada através da Grelha de Avaliação da Linguagem - Nível Escolar, da Bateria de Avaliação da Consciência Morfológica, da Bateria de Avaliação da Leitura em Português Europeu e de uma adaptação de provas de outros estudos. Conclui-se que o nível de consciência morfológica das crianças do 4º ano é estatisticamente superior às do 2º ano, nomeadamente na prova de analogia de palavras e de decisão morfossemântica-afixos, relativamente aos sufixos. Ainda assim foi possível verificar diferenças significativas nas tarefas de leitura de ambos os grupos. Verifica-se uma correlação entre algumas provas de consciência morfológica e a leitura e escrita.

ABSTRACT Coelho et al. (2018) underlined the importance of the grammar O mestre francez ou novo methodo para aprender a lingua franceza por meio da portugueza, by Francisco Clamopin Durand, in the context of 18th century French-Portuguese grammar. This work stands out mainly due to its didactic character, as it was intended for all Portuguese people who wanted to study the French language correctly. In preparing his work, the author claimed to have based his linguistic theories on the most prestigious French authors of the time, referencing Pierre de La Touche, François Séraphin Régnier Desmarais, and Pierre Restaut. For this reason, in this paper we intend to present the graphophonetic proposals of the author of the grammar under analysis concerning the pronunciation of vowels, trying to demonstrate the possible influence of the aforementioned French authors. The methodology used will consist in a contrastive analysis of the information present in Durand’s grammar with the different treatises mentioned by the author, highlighting the contribution of his main sources (Auroux, 2006).

RESUMO Coelho et al. (2018) sublinharam a importância da gramática O mestre francez ou novo methodo para aprender a lingua franceza por meio da portugueza, de Francisco Clamopin Durand, no contexto da gramática franco-portuguesa setecentista. Esta obra destaca-se sobretudo pelo seu pendor didático, pois destinava-se a todos os portugueses que pretendessem estudar a língua francesa corretamente, pelo que, na elaboração da sua obra, o autor afirmou ter baseado as suas teorias linguísticas nos autores franceses mais prestigiados da época, referenciando Pierre de La Touche, François Séraphin Régnier Desmarais e Pierre Restaut. Por esta razão, é nossa pretensão, neste artigo, apresentar as propostas grafofonéticas do autor da gramática em análise relativamente à pronúncia das vogais, procurando demonstrar a possível influência dos supramencionados autores franceses. A metodologia utilizada consistirá numa análise contrastiva das informações presentes na gramática de Durand com os diferentes tratados mencionados pelo autor, evidenciando o contributo das suas principais fontes (Auroux, 2006).

ABSTRACT The present study aims to carry out a discursive and psychoanalytical analysis of Rede Globo’s (a Brazilian broadcasting corporation) self-promotion publicity through some institutional slogans. Self-promoting advertisement has always aimed to present the different broadcasting corporations in Brazil - that is, television in Brazil - as being representative of the country itself. In other words, as a mirror in which Brazil could, or should, see itself. On becoming the figure that fills the place of the Other in societies of the spectacle, television seeks strategies to (imaginarily) eliminate the distance of the subject in relation to the Other, thus reinforcing the illusion of the subjects’ autonomy. The slogan A gente se vê por aqui (We’ll meet here) is the slogan we elected to analyze in greater detail, to try to understand and interpret the effects of an ideological interpellation condensed the utterance in the specific scope of the societies of spectacle.

RESUMO Nosso objetivo é realizar uma análise discursiva e psicanalítica da publicidade de autopromoção da Rede Globo a partir de alguns slogans institucionais da emissora. Desde o início, e nos mais diferentes momentos históricos, a propaganda de autopromoção buscou representar as emissoras (e, por consequência, a própria televisão) como representantes do Brasil, como espelho no qual o Brasil pode (ou deveria) se reconhecer. Tornando-se o semblante que ocupa o lugar do Outro nas sociedades do espetáculo, a televisão busca estratégias que (imaginariamente) eliminem a distância do sujeito em relação ao Outro, reforçando a ilusão de autonomia dos sujeitos. A análise proposta centra-se no slogan Globo, A gente se vê por aqui e buscará entender e interpretar os efeitos da interpelação ideológica condensada no enunciado no âmbito específico das sociedades do espetáculo.

ABSTRACT This paper discusses core principles such as play, collaboration, and agency that support the online workshops offered by the Global Play Brigade (GPB), an international community of activists from different areas, who got together to fight against the global crisis that threatened the world in so many ways due to the covid-19 pandemic. To exemplify part of the theoretical and methodological approach involved in the plan and, the workshop, as well as its goals, one of the sessions will be described along with perspectives aligned to Spinoza, Vygotsky, Freire, and some other authors to promote understanding of how people can be affected towards social change. It is known that there are many facets to the current turmoil, so the GPB seeks to create spaces in which creativity and critical thinking can create possibilities for emotional support, development, hope, and action.

RESUMO Este artigo discute princípios fundamentais como brincar, colaboração e agência que são base para os workshops online oferecidos pela Global Play Brigade (GPB), uma comunidade internacional de ativistas em diferentes áreas, que se uniram para lutar contra a crise global que ameaçava o mundo de diferentes maneiras devido à pandemia da covid-19. Para exemplificar parte da abordagem teórico-metodológica envolvida no plano, o próprio workshop e seus objetivos, uma das sessões será descrita juntamente com perspectivas alinhadas a Spinoza, Vygotsky, Freire e alguns outros autores para entender como as pessoas podem ser afetadas no intuito de mudança social. É notório que a turbulência atual apresenta muitas facetas, por isso o GPB busca criar espaços nos quais a criatividade e o pensamento crítico possibilitem suporte emocional, desenvolvimento, esperança e ação.

ABSTRACT This study investigates the nature of modal constructs in advertising commercial, operational in Oral-B® Toothpaste, to explain the mechanistic integration of modes, unified to generate holistic meaning. With the application of the mood system and kinesics concepts, the author is able to interpret the video for readers. Besides using statistical substances (tables and graphs) to explore the modes, one observes a fragmentation of structures of some linguistic items such as The answer?, Easy, still fresh and strong. Repetition is a concern, where the communicator deploys the generic You, your teeth, and your mouth for a reason of emphasis. Communicative devices such as strong and healthy, and long lasting fresh breath (feeling) are details, exemplifying the Oral-B’s 2-IN-1 qualities. Gestural modes of smiling, observed in a repetitive speeches of Smile, Smile, Smile, and intimate and personal distances augment meanings as Social Actors 1 and 2 are indexical participants. Metaphorical professional actors and the dual 2-IN-1 features characterize the communication, projecting interchangeability. The advertisement is fascinating; yet, the metaphor of interchangeability could have been simplified for a purpose of sensitizing the illiterate.

RESUMO Este estudo investiga a natureza dos construtos modais em publicidade comercial, operacional no creme dental Oral-B®, para explicar a integração mecanística de modos, unificados para gerar significado holístico. Com a aplicação do sistema de humor e dos conceitos cinésicos, o autor consegue interpretar o vídeo para os leitores. Além de utilizar substâncias estatísticas (tabelas e gráficos) para explorar os modos, observa-se a fragmentação das estruturas de alguns itens linguísticos como A resposta ?, Fácil, ainda atual e forte. A repetição é uma preocupação, onde o comunicador implanta os genéricos Você, seus dentes e sua boca em razão de ênfase. Dispositivos comunicativos, como hálito fresco e duradouro (sensação), são detalhes exemplificando as qualidades 2-EM-1 do Oral-B. Os modos gestuais de sorrir, observados em discursos repetitivos de Sorriso, Sorriso, Sorriso e distâncias íntimas e pessoais aumentam os significados, visto que os Atores Sociais 1 e 2 são participantes indexicais. Atores profissionais metafóricos e as características dual 2-IN-1 caracterizam a comunicação, projetando intercambiabilidade. O anúncio é fascinante; no entanto, a metáfora da intercambialidade poderia ter sido simplificada para sensibilizar os analfabetos.

ABSTRACT In the last decade, Sweden has received many deaf migrants with very diverse linguistic and educational backgrounds. When arriving in Sweden, they are expected to learn Swedish Sign Language (STS) and Swedish. For this study, we have used data from project Mulder, a four-year research project that aims to generate knowledge about deaf migrants’ multilingual situation in Sweden. The focus is on two folk high schools with programmes designated for deaf migrants. In this article, we describe how adult education for deaf migrants is organised in Sweden and examine how translanguaging practices are formed there. We found that translanguaging is a natural and common part of the multilingual classrooms, but also that the opportunities to translanguage depend highly on the individual’s repertoires and whether particular individuals have one or more languages in common or have a lingua franca. We also found that translanguaging is not always helpful in learning contexts if the teachers are not conscious and insightful when they mix languages.

RESUMO Nesta última década, a Suécia tem recebido muitos imigrantes surdos com competências linguísticas e educacionais muito diversas. No entanto, ao chegarem à Suécia espera-se que todos aprendam a Língua Gestual Sueca (STS) e sueco. Neste estudo usamos dados do projeto Mulder - um projeto de investigação de quatro anos com o objetivo de gerar conhecimento sobre a situação multilíngue dos imigrantes surdos na Suécia. O foco está em duas instituições públicas de educação para adultos com programas específicos para imigrantes surdos. Neste artigo descrevemos a organização da educação para adultos imigrantes surdos na Suécia e o desenvolvimento das práticas translinguísticas nesse contexto. Os resultados sugerem que a transferência linguística é comum e surge naturalmente em turmas multilingues, mas indicam também que as oportunidades translinguísticas dependem muito das competências linguísticas individuais dos participantes e de haver entre eles uma ou mais línguas comuns, ou uma língua franca. Descobrimos também que a prática translinguística nem sempre ajuda a aprendizagem quando os professores não estão conscientes e conhecem as línguas que se misturam.

ABSTRACT This article reports on a preliminary investigation into the language practices of three groups of deaf learners of English, all users of British Sign Language (BSL), and myself as their tutor in an adult education setting. These practices were explored through the lens of translanguaging, viewed as both a description of a linguistic process, and a theory of language, to learn more about how we draw on the totality of our resources to communicate and make meaning. The purpose of this investigation was to learn more about how BSL and English are used together in the same context and how that interplay works to our advantage. Additionally, consideration was also given to the contribution manually-coded English systems such as Sign Supported English (SSE) and Signed English (SE) make, together with the other written and sign languages, as well as gesture, enactment, pointing and other semiotic resources. Video recorded interactional data were collected from the classroom and supported by reflective notes and lesson plans. Both the video data, uploaded for analysis to ELAN, a multi-media annotation tool for creating time-aligned transcripts that supports a tier-based data model, and the written data corpus were examined using a thematic analysis. The findings revealed an illuminating picture of the interplay between languages, but also a movement beyond language as part of a broader semiotic repertoire to construct meaning in the classroom.

RESUMO Este artigo é baseado em uma investigação preliminar sobre práticas de línguas de três grupos de estudantes surdos da língua inglesa, todos usuários da Língua de Sinais Britânica (BSL) e eu como professor em um cenário de educação para adultos. Estas práticas foram exploradas através de lentes da translinguagem, vista como uma descrição do processo linguístico assim como teoria da linguagem, para aprendermos melhor a utilizar todos os nossos recursos para comunicação e criação de significado. O propósito desta investigação foi aprender um pouco mais sobre como a BSL e a Língua Inglesa são usadas conjuntamente no mesmo contexto e como esta interação nos traz vantagens. Adicionalmente, consideramos a contribuição de sistemas do Inglês manualmente codificados como Sign Supported English (SSE) e Signed English (SE), juntamente com outras línguas escritas e de sinais, assim como gestos, encenação, indicação e outros recursos semióticos. Dados interativos e gravados em vídeo foram coletados em salas de aula e respaldados por anotações reflexivas e planos de aulas. Tanto as informações em vídeo, transferidas para a ferramenta de anotações multimídia ELAN, que cria transcrições alinhadas no tempo baseado em um modelo de dados em níveis, como todo o conjunto de dados escritos, foram examinados usando uma análise temática. As descobertas revelaram um quadro esclarecedor da interação entre as línguas, mas também um movimento além da linguagem como parte de um repertório semiótico mais amplo para construir significado em sala de aula.
