Abstract The São Francisco River Basin (SFRB) is extremely important for both the local rural and urban population, running through several states and municipalities in Brazil. Thus, the study of the spatial distribution of rainfall in the SFRB, supported by the application of geostatistics, offers valuable insights for water management and planning. In this study, data from 341 rainfall stations were used, corresponding to the period between 1989 and 2018, and monthly accumulated rainfall analyzed. About the trends, positive estimates for latitude, except for April, highlight that the accumulated precipitation decreases from south to north each month. In December, 85.10% of the spatial variability of rainfall was explained by the trend of rainfall concerning geographical coordinates. Concerning spatial dependence, the analyzed data predominantly exhibited the exponential variogram model. The conducted analyses offered a holistic view of rainfall in the region, facilitating the understanding of spatial patterns and shedding light on challenges in the face of climate change. Our research limited on the spatial modeling of rainfall in the SFRB, and future work should include modeling socio-economic and environmental impacts in the region concerning the spatial irregularity of rainfall. Resumo A Bacia Hidrográfica do Rio São Francisco (SFRB) é de extrema importância tanto para a população rural quanto urbana local, percorrendo diversos estados e municípios do Brasil. O estudo da distribuição espacial das chuvas na SFRB, apoiado na aplicação da geoestatística, oferece insights valiosos para a gestão e planejamento hídrico. Abstract The albedo of a water surface and the energy available for evaporation are strongly correlated and studying such processes is of paramount importance for water security at farm and regional levels. In this paper, water albedo (αw) and net all-wave radiation (Rn) were analyzed after being measured above the surface of an artificially cleaned and low-turbidity water used for tobacco irrigation. It was observed that αw decreased as the sun elevation (θ) increased, especially for clear and near clear skies. The results showed that αw can be reasonably predicted with a power law model either in terms of θ or Sg (incoming solar radiation) across different cloud cover conditions. From this study, a mean daily albedo of 0.05 is recommended. Three approaches were considered for estimation of daily Rn. In the first, a linear regression model strongly fitted Rn data in terms of Sg solely. Resumo No leste subúmido da Bahia, Brasil, água de superfície armazenada em reservatórios revestidos é usada para irrigar por gotejamento plantas de fumo tipo Sumatra cultivadas sob sombreamento parcial. Este trabalho, no âmbito de um estudo maior sobre evaporação, teve como objetivo monitorar, durante duas estações de cultivo (2015 e 2016), a turbidez da água, o balanço de radiação (componentes de onda curta - OC e onda longa - OL) e a temperatura superficial da água (Tw), com sensores instalados numa plataforma flutuante. A turbidez da água era muito baixa (cerca de 2,6 NTU em média) devido à filtragem e tratamento osmose reversa antes do armazenamento. Com base nos dados de ambas as estações, a radiação líquida de OC Snet correspondeu a cerca de 96% da radiação de OC incidente Sg. O saldo diário de OL Lnet foi consistentemente negativo (média de -55,1 W/m2). A radiação líquida total Rn correspondeu a 77% de Snet. Abstract In eastern sub-humid Bahia, Brazil, surface water stored in lined ponds is used to drip irrigate Sumatra tobacco plants grown under partial shading. This work, as part of a large evaporation study, aimed at monitoring, over two irrigation seasons (2015 and 2016), the water turbidity, the radiation balance (shortwave - SW and longwave - LW components), and the skin water temperature (Tw) with sensors deployed in a raft. The water turbidity was very low (around 2.6 NTU on average) due to filtration and reverse osmosis treatment of water prior to storage. Considering data from both seasons, the net SW radiation Snet was about 96% of incoming SW flux Sg. The daily net LW flux Lnet was consistently negative (-55.1 W/m2 average). The net all-wave radiation Rn corresponded to 77% of Snet. Four days were selected from both seasons to evaluate the effects of cloudiness on the SW and LW components. Abstract The study of the behavior of intense precipitation is extremely important in the management of disasters triggered by these events that culminate in environmental, social and economic damage throughout Brazil. The main objective of this work was to identify the trends and behavior of intense precipitation events in the State of Minas Gerais. Daily precipitation data from 309 rainfall stations managed by the National Water and Basic Sanitation Agency (ANA) were analyzed, corresponding to the period between 1978 and 2017. The quantile technique was used as a confidence interval (95%) in the trend analysis. The Mann-Kendall Test and the Sen Estimator estimated the trends and their magnitudes, respectively. Of the 309 stations analyzed, 20 stations showed a statistically significant trend (at the 95% level) in the intensity of events, with 8 stations showing an increasing trend and 12 stations showing a decreasing trend, in the States of Minas Gerais. Resumo O estudo do comportamento das precipitações intensas é de extrema importância no gerenciamento dos desastres deflagrados por estes eventos que culminam em danos ambientais, sociais e econômicos por todo o Brasil. O objetivo principal deste trabalho foi identificar as tendências e o comportamento dos eventos de precipitação intensa no Estado de Minas Gerais. Foram analisados dados diários de precipitação de 309 postos pluviométricos gerenciados pela Agência Nacional de águas e Saneamento Básico (ANA), correspondentes ao período entre 1978 e 2017. A técnica dos quantis foi utilizada como intervalo de confiança (95%) na análise da tendência. O Teste de Mann-Kendall e o Estimador de Sen estimaram as tendências e suas magnitudes, respectivamente. Abstract Drought is a natural phenomenon that cause severely impacts on different sectors of society. To assess drought, indices are used that allow comparing events in different regions and time scales. SPEIbase is a gridded database that provides global-scale SPEI estimates with an extensive temporal coverage (1901 to 2022), 0.5° x 0.5° spatial resolution, and is currently being updated. This study aimed to evaluate SPEIbase v2.9 in representing the spatio-temporal patterns of drought in the Southeastern Brazil Region. For this, SPEIbase values were compared to values calculated from data from eight conventional meteorological stations (CMS), for the period from 1961 to 2010. SPEIbase showed satisfactory results for the Southeastern Brazil Region. The gridded data presented a positive linear trend for all eight CMS in the study, with a strong correlation (0.70 < r < 0.90) for more than 50% of the stations. Additionally, SPEIbase performed satisfactorily in identifying the frequency and intensity of droughts. Resumo A seca é um fenômeno natural, que causa impactos severos em diferentes setores da sociedade. Para avaliar a seca, são utilizados índices que permitem comparar eventos em diferentes regiões e escalas temporais. O SPEIbase é uma base de dados em grade que fornece estimativas do SPEI em escala global, com ampla abrangência temporal (1901 a 2022), resolução espacial de 0,5° x 0,5° e segue em processo de atualização. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o SPEIbase v2.9 na representação dos padrões espaço-temporal da seca na Região Sudeste Brasileira. Para isso, foram comparados os valores da SPEIbase via dados de oito estações meteorológicas convencionais (EMC), para o período de 1961 a 2010. Resumo As previsões sazonais de precipitação são essenciais para a gestão dos recursos hídricos, a atividade agrícola e o planejamento operacional de sistemas hidroelétricos. Avanços metodológicos capazes de aprimorar a acurácia das previsões de precipitação geram benefícios significativos para a sociedade. Diante desse contexto, este estudo propõe e avalia duas abordagens para o refinamento das previsões sazonais de precipitação no Brasil, utilizando modelos matemáticos simples e baseados em dados, como a regressão linear múltipla (MLR) e a máquina de vetores de suporte não linear (SVM). Nas abordagens propostas, os modelos MLR e SVM são alimentados com índices climáticos relacionados a diferentes padrões de teleconexão que afetam a precipitação sazonal no Brasil, dados da análise de precipitação diária global do Climate Prediction Center (CPC) e previsões de precipitação do Seasonal Forecast System 5 (SEAS5). Ambos os modelos MLR e SVM foram validados de janeiro de 2017 a dezembro de 2020, usando a precipitação do CPC como referência. Abstract Seasonal precipitation forecasts are essential for water resource management, agricultural activities, and the operational planning of hydropower systems. Any methodological advancement that enhances the accuracy of precipitation predictions will yield considerable societal benefits. In this context, this study proposes and evaluates two approaches for refining seasonal precipitation forecasts in Brazil, using simple data-based models, such as multiple linear regression (MLR) and nonlinear support vector machine (SVM). These models employ climate indices related to different teleconnection patterns that affect seasonal precipitation in Brazil, the unified gauge-based analysis of global daily precipitation from the Climate Prediction Center (CPC), and the precipitation forecasts from the Seasonal Forecast System 5 (SEAS5) as input variables. Both MLR and SVM models were validated from Jan-2017 to Dec-2020 using precipitation from the CPC as ground truth. The results suggest that, compared to SEAS5, MLR and SVM models enhance predictive accuracy and reduce bias in precipitation forecasts for the Southeast, Midwest, and North regions of Brazil during the austral summer. Abstract Evapotranspiration (ET) is one of the most important processes in the hydrologic cycle, constituting the main responsible for water losses at the surface. Several evapotranspiration models use information from surface temperature and vegetation indices captured by remote sensors such as MODIS and LANDSAT to estimate the ETc value. The objective of this study is to apply SSEBop model to estimate ETc of soybean in a field experiment under four water regimes, using high-resolution multispectral and thermal images collected from remotely piloted aircraft (RPA). Surface temperature and NDVI maps were generated as sources for evapotranspiration estimation. From a Python script, spatial variability maps of ETc were generated at different phenological stages of the crop. The quality of the model for ETc estimates was performed by comparing the modeling results with leaf transpiration data measured in the field using an infrared gas analyzer, whose results showed a good correlation (R2 = 0.76). Vários modelos de evapotranspiração utilizam informações da temperatura da superfície e índices de vegetação captadas por sensores remotos tais como o MODIS e a série LANDSAT para estimar o valor de ETc. L) em um campo experimental submetida a quatro regimes hídricos, utilizando imagens multiespectrais e termais de alta resolução coletadas com uso de aeronave remotamente pilotada. Abstract The objective was to analyze extreme drought events on the Sucuru River hydrographic sub-basin during the 1994-2021 historical series. The rainfall data were obtained through the Agência Executiva de Gestão das águas do Estado da Paraíba (AESA). With the analysis of the data it was possible to know the duration, the water deficit and the intensity of the events. After identifying the droughts and their characteristics (duration, water deficit and intensity), the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was used to classify and select the extreme drought events (SPI ≤ -2,00) that occurred. In terms of duration, water deficit and intensity, severe droughts occurred in the decade 1990 in all municipalities, the most critical being those from the 1997-1999 series. The droughts in 2001-2003 were very intense, but less than those that occurred in the decade 1990 and 2010. Very serious droughts were identified during 2012-2019 in all municipalities, especially Caraúbas, Monteiro, Serra Branca, Congo and Coxixola. Após a identificação das secas e de suas características (duração, déficit hídrico e intensidade), foi utilizado o índice Padronizado de Precipitação (IPP) para classificar e selecionar os eventos extremos de secas (IPP ≤ -2,00) que ocorreram. Com relação à duração, ao déficit hídrico e à intensidade, ocorreram secas graves na década de 1990 em todos os municípios, sendo as mais críticas as da série 1997-1999. Resumo Pela grande atividade econômica e densidade populacional, a região sudeste do Brasil vivencia processos acelerados de mudanças no uso e cobertura do solo, que contribuem para modificações no balanço de radiação (BR) na superfície. Neste estudo, avaliamos os componentes do BR de diferentes conjuntos de dados de alta resolução, última geração, nesta região do país em dois períodos (fev/2005-jan/2006 e mar/2015-fev/2016). Em geral, todos os conjuntos de dados representaram adequadamente a sazonalidade dos componentes do BR (exceto albedo). O ERA5-Land apresenta com o menor erro relativo médio para representar o albedo (≈ 15%), radiação de onda longa atmosférica (DLWR ≈ 4,5%) e radiação de onda longa da superfície (ULWR ≈ 3,6%). Na estimativa de radiação de ondas curtas, o GLASS foi o melhor (≈ 14%). As incertezas neste último podem estar associadas à dificuldade para representar a variabilidade de cobertura de nuvens no período chuvoso. As falhas na estimativa do albedo devem-se à incapacidade de simular as propriedades da superfície. DLWR e ULWR apresentaram os melhores desempenhos e suas incertezas estiveram relacionadas a problemas no cálculo das temperaturas do ar e da superfície, respectivamente. Abstract The Upper-Tropospheric Cyclonic Vortexes (UTCV) are one of the main synoptic systems that provoke alterations in the weather during the pre-rainy season over Northeastern Brazil (BNE). The main objective of the study is to understand the UTCV configuration that was developed during 26 days in January 2016 through synoptic and thermodynamic analysis. In addition to the vortex, systems of different spatial and temporal scales such as the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ), Madden-Julian Oscillation (OMJ) were configured simultaneously, along with the El Niño that had been active since 2015. The connection between these systems caused a large increase in rainfall over the BNE. The UTCV configuration together with the SACZ being driven by the propagation of the MJO determined the excess of rainfall during the days analyzed. The western periphery of the vortex was positioned close to the BNE east coast, causing a change in the convergence pattern of large-scale moisture transport, which began to converge on the BNE, increasing precipitation rates in some states. The evaluation of the UTCV vertical structure through vertical sections indicated upward movements only in the western periphery, the eastern periphery was characterized by strong convective inhibition. Resumo Os Vórtices Ciclônicos de Altos Níveis (VCAN) são um dos principais sistemas que provocam alterações no tempo durante a pré-estação chuvosa do Nordeste do Brasil (NEB). O principal objetivo deste estudo é compreender a configuração do VCAN que se desenvolveu durante 26 dias em janeiro de 2016 através da análise sinótica e termodinâmica. Além do vórtice, sistemas de diferentes escalas espaciais e temporais como a Zona de Convergência do Atlântico Sul (ZCAS), Oscilação Madden-Julian (OMJ) se configuraram simultaneamente, junto com o El Niño que se encontrava ativo desde 2015. A conexão entre os sistemas supracitados provocou um grande aumento nos índices de chuva no NEB. A configuração do VCAN em conjunto com a ZCAS sendo impulsionados pela propagação da OMJ determinaram o excesso de chuvas durante os dias analisados. A periferia oeste do vórtice se posicionou próxima à costa leste do NEB, provocando uma alteração no padrão de convergência do transporte de umidade de grande escala, que passou a convergir sobre o NEB, elevando os índices de precipitação em alguns estados. Abstract There are few studies on fog in the Brazilian Northeast (BNE) and they show that the formation processes are different in each location. Data from various sources were used for 9 years (2008-2016): a) surface data obtained by REDEMET; b) radiosonde by the University of Wyoming; c) satellites images from the GOES and METEOSAT available on CPTEC; d) reanalysis products of the ECMWF, NOAA and NCAR. Meteorological fields and simulated vertical profiles were plotted for synoptic and thermodynamic analysis. In Maceio (M) 20 cases were reported, formed by surface trough, only one event was identified from satellite product. In Campina Grande (CG) 105 cases were recorded, most of which were caused by a surface ridge; only four events were identified by satellite products. All cases in all cities had a shorter duration than observed by METAR and satisfactory results by PAFOG were obtained. Fog forecast by PAFOG was satisfactory with 6 and 12 h antecedence in M and CG. Fog formation in the BNE is atypical, especially in Maceio, where it is rarely identified by satellite data. However, the prediction by the PAFOG model presents satisfactory results up to 12 h antecedence. Resumo Existem poucos estudos sobre nevoeiro no Nordeste Brasileiro (BNE) e eles mostram que os processos de formação são diferentes em cada localidade. Foram utilizados dados de diversas fontes durante 9 anos (2008-2016): a) dados de superfície obtidos pela REDEMET; b) radiossondagem pela Universidade de Wyoming; c) imagens de satélite do GOES e METEOSAT disponíveis no CPTEC; d) produtos de reanálise do ECMWF, NOAA e NCAR. Foram plotados campos meteorológicos e perfis verticais simulados para análises sinóticas e termodinâmicas. Em Maceió (M) foram notificados 20 casos, formados por crista de superfície, apenas um evento foi identificado a partir de produto de satélite. Em Campina Grande (CG) foram registrados 105 casos, sendo a maioria causada por cavado na superfície; apenas quatro eventos foram identificados por produtos de satélite. Todos os casos em todas as cidades tiveram uma duração menor do que o observado pelo METAR e resultados satisfatórios pelo PAFOG foram obtidos. A previsão de nevoeiro pelo PAFOG foi satisfatória com 6 e 12 horas de antecedência em M e CG. Abstract The work presents the results of the application of an active methodology in which the teaching-learning process on atmospheric variables, contents taught in climatology classes in geography disciplines in the final years of high school, were worked in an articulated way with practical construction activities of meteorological instruments as low-cost materials. The research was carried out in a public elementary school located in the municipality of Caucaia - Metropolitan Region of Fortaleza in the State of Ceará, with 26 students aged 14 to 17 years. Resumo O trabalho apresenta os resultados sobre a aplicação de uma metodologia ativa em que o processo de ensino-aprendizado sobre as variáveis atmosféricas, conteúdos ministrados nas aulas de climatologia nas disciplinas de geografia nos anos finais do ensino fundamental, foram trabalhados de forma articulada com atividades práticas de construção de instrumentos meteorológicos com materiais de baixo custo. A pesquisa foi realizada em uma escola pública de ensino fundamental localizada no município de Caucaia - Região Metropolitana de Fortaleza no Estado do Ceará, com 26 estudantes na faixa etária de 14 a 17 anos. Abstract The objective was to analyze extreme drought events on the Sucuru River hydrographic sub-basin during the 1994-2021 historical series. The rainfall data were obtained through the Agência Executiva de Gestão das águas do Estado da Paraíba (AESA). With the analysis of the data it was possible to know the duration, the water deficit and the intensity of the events. After identifying the droughts and their characteristics (duration, water deficit and intensity), the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was used to classify and select the extreme drought events (SPI ≤ -2,00) that occurred. In terms of duration, water deficit and intensity, severe droughts occurred in the decade 1990 in all municipalities, the most critical being those from the 1997-1999 series. The droughts in 2001-2003 were very intense, but less than those that occurred in the decade 1990 and 2010.
