Contemporary gravimetry uses gravimeters to find the magnitude of gravitational acceleration (g) in a punctual manner on the Earth’s surface. This work considered the relevance of determining g in the didactic laboratory using the pendulum, making a careful analysis of the phenomena that affect the oscillating device, bringing contributions to the teaching of Classical Physics. The first, although modest, is effective, and proposes measuring the oscillation period using two smartphones. The second, a theoretical analysis of the effect of angular amplitude correlated to drag, on the period of pendulum oscillation. The third refers to the validation of two equations that provide the value of g like a function of latitude and altitude, with gravimetric data available on the IBGE website. Nas abordagens introdutórias de Mecânica, seja no ensino superior ou na educação básica, as discussões em torno das diferenças entre os conceitos de referencial inercial e não inercial costumam ser restritas à Dinâmica, especialmente com a definição das leis de Newton, sem análises experimentais. No entanto, a noção de referencial é fundamental para a caracterização dos movimentos, mesmo que do ponto de vista estrito da Cinemática. Neste contexto, objetivamos fundamentar os conceitos de referencial inercial e não inercial a partir da exploração de uma atividade experimental com fins didáticos desenvolvida por meio de videoanálise. Especificamente, investigamos o lançamento de uma pequena bola em três situações de movimento relativo entre dois referenciais: movimento retilíneo uniforme; movimento retilíneo uniformemente variado, com aceleração e velocidade de mesmo sentido; e movimento retilíneo uniformemente variado, com aceleração e velocidade em sentidos opostos. In introductory approaches to Mechanics, whether in higher education or basic education, discussions regarding the distinctions between the concepts of inertial and non-inertial frames of reference tend to be confined to Dynamics, especially with the establishment of Newton’s laws, devoid of experimental analyses. Nevertheless, the notion of a frame of reference holds paramount significance for the characterization of motion, even within the strict purview of Kinematics. In this context, we aspire to underpin the concepts of inertial and non-inertial frames of reference through the exploration of an educational experimental activity conducted via video analysis. Specifically, we inquire into the motion of a small sphere in three situations of relative motion between two frames of reference: uniform rectilinear motion; uniformly accelerated rectilinear motion, with ace-location and velocity in the same direction; and uniformly accelerated rectilinear motion, with acceleration and velocity in opposite directions. We derive a kinematic description grounded in Galilean Relativity’s Principle and the transformation relationships between inertial and non-inertial frames of reference, in addition to the adjustments of the motion curves acquired through video analysis. We proffer the notion that other facets such as scale invariance, temporal simultaneity, and inquiries related to the historical development of the concepts of reference frame and absolute and relative motion can also be addressed in the discussions surrounding the proposed experiments. Conteúdos relacionados à área de Física Moderna envolvem o conhecimento da produção e interação da radiação com a matéria. A manifestação macroscópica dessa interação se evidencia pela atenuação da radiação incidente no material. Neste estudo, apresenta-se o uso de um aparato experimental destinado a práticas de ensino visando a determinação do coeficiente de atenuação do chumbo para fótons de raios gama provenientes de uma fonte de 137Cs (fótons com energia de aproximadamente 662 keV). Tradicionalmente, essa determinação é realizada utilizando-se como material absorvedor placas de chumbo de espessuras conhecidas. Entretanto, em geral, esse enfoque leva a resultados discrepantes em relação ao valor do coeficiente de atenuação teórico para o chumbo, com desvios em torno de 15%. No método aqui apresentado, sugere-se a substituição das placas por esferas ou pó de chumbo. Os resultados obtidos mostram que o método proposto reduziu sensivelmente os desvios do coeficiente de atenuação medido em relação aos valores teóricos (simulados). Contents related to the modern physics field involve the knowledge of the production and interaction of radiation with matter. The attenuation of the radiation evidences the macroscopic manifestation of this interaction. This study presents an apparatus intended for teaching practices to determine the lead mass attenuation coefficient for gamma-ray photons from a source of 137Cs (photons with energy of approximately 662 keV). Traditionally, this determination is performed using lead plates of known thicknesses. However, this focus generally produces discrepant results related to the mass attenuation coefficient adopted values, with deviations around 15%. In the approach presented here, which is innovative, the plates were replaced by small spheres or powders of the analyzed material (lead). The results show that this substitution significantly reduced the deviations from the theoretical values. In the best experimental condition, the errors were between 2% and 4% for the spheres and the powder, respectively. A simple and inexpensive experimental procedure is proposed to investigate the skin friction caused by air in a rotating sphere. A device using a magnetic field keeps the sphere levitating. The sphere is briefly boosted and begins to rotate, but the air resistance acts in opposition to the motion and consequently the period of rotation increases. The experimental data demonstrate that the rotation period of the sphere increases exponentially with time. To account for this behavior, a physical model was developed, which provides an accurate description of the data. The nature of light has always intrigued humanity. Among the texts of ancient Greeks that have survived to our days, there are frequent mentions of light and its nature. The first known book on optics is attributed to Euclid in the 3rd century BCE. The phenomenon of refraction, although known for millennia, resisted a mathematical explanation until the modern age. W. Snellius (Snell) was the first to present the correct equation that related the angles of incidence, refraction, and the speeds of light in each medium during refraction, but he did not publish his results. The publication was made by René Descartes. This result is now known as Snell-Descartes’ law or the law of refraction. Descartes treated light as a particle in his deduction. Huygens, in the 17th century, also deduced this law but treated light as a wave. These results differed in terms of the speed of light in more refractive media. Lasers find extensive applications across a spectrum from academic research to industrial use. In various instances, understanding the intensity profile of laser light is of paramount importance, specifically how its intensity changes along its propagation path. In this study, we introduce an economical and alternative technique for determining the waist of a Gaussian laser beam, leveraging the capabilities of a Smartphone camera. Our methodology entails directing a CO2 laser onto a thermochromic liquid crystal sheet for specific exposure duration, resulting in a color pattern that evolves over time. This evolving pattern is captured by a Smartphone camera, and selected frames from the recording are processed and analyzed to quantify the beam’s waist, denoted as w ( z ). Our measurements are compared with those obtained through the traditional knife-edge method, demonstrating a substantial degree of agreement. Furthermore, by interpolating the waists calculated through our approach, we were able to ascertain the beam waist at the focus and the focal point of a converging lens, yielding results consistent with the reference method.
