O exame de uma coleta feita em setembro de 1987 na Ilha de Fernando de Noronha, revelou a presença de duas espécies de ácaros oribatí-deos filiados à família Phtiracaridae, a saber: Atropacarus (Hoplophorella) scapellus Aoki, 1965 e A. (H.) schauenbergi Mahunka, 1978, em matéria orgânica acumulada sobre o ramo de uma árvore, a 1,8 m de altura sobre o solo.

Two species of Phthiracaridae oribatid mites, namely Atropacarus (Hoplophorella) scapellatus Aoki, 1965 and A. (H.) schauenbergi Mahunka, 1978, are reported from debris accumulated on a tree branch about 1.8 m above soil surface, in Fernando de Noronha Island, Brazil.

O efeito da adição de benzoato de sódio sobre a fermentação alcoólica de meio de melaço de cana-de-açúcar com 15% de açúcares redutores totais foi estudado utilizando a levedura industrial Saccharomyces cerevisiae M-300-A. Foram adicionados 7,5 miligramas de benzoato de sódio para 0,8 gramas de levedura seca durante 0, 2, 4 e 6 ciclos fermentativos. Com a adição de benzoato ocorreu aumento na produção de etanol, redução do crescimento da levedura e dos teores de glicerol e dos álcoois n-propílico, isobutílico e isoamílico. O inibidor não provocou redução da viabilidade celular e após a retirada do inibidor a levedura voltou a apresentar crescimento. Este fato sugere a possibilidade do uso do benzoato em destilarias de álcool combustível.

The effect of the addition of sodium benzoate on alcoholic fermentation of molasses medium with 15% total reducing sugars was studied by using industrial yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae M-300-A. Sodium benzoate was added at the rate of 7.5 miligram to 0,8 grams of dry yeast during 0, 2, 4 e 6 fermentative cycles. The addition of sodium benzoate resulted in an increase in ethanol production and a reduction of yeast growth and glycerol and n-propylic, isobutylic and isoamylic alcoholic contents. The inhibitor did not reduce cell viability; soon after its removal the yeast returned to grow. This fact suggests the possibility of using the benzoate in distilleries.

Com a finalidade de estudar a extração de macro e micronutrientes durante o desenvolvimento do alho-porró, em condições de campo, foi feita a coleta de materiais a cada 20 dias, num ciclo total de 170 dias, quando cada planta atingiu o peso de 12,87 g de matéria-seca. Para uma população de 166.667 plantas por ha, a quantidade de nutrientes extraídos foi: N-115,36 kg, P-7,88 kg, K-55,16 kg, Ca-13,14 kg, Mg-7,69 kg, S-7,10 kg, B-38,89g, Cu-17,77 g, Fe-1165,49 g, Mn-52,09 g e Zn-47,15 g.

An experient was carried out in order to determine the nutrients extraction by leek, in field condition. Plant materials were collected, since 50 days after transplanting, in intervals of 20 days up to 170 days growth. The results showed that, in the end of the experiment, the dry matter weight was 12.87 g per plant: N and K levels were the highest levels in the shoot and root of the plants. The same occurred with Fe in relations to micronutrients. The nutrients extraction by a population of 166.667 plants per ha occurred as follow: 115,36 kg of N, 7,88 kg of P, 55,16 kg of K, 13,14 kg of Ca, 7,69 kg of Mg, 7,10 kg of S, 38,89 g of B, 17,77 g of Cu, 1165,49 g of Fe, 52,09 g of Mn and 47,15 g of Zn.

Em uma plantação de cafeeiros (Coffea arábica L. cv. Catuai) com dois, três, quatro e cinco anos de idade no campo situada em Latossolo Vermelho Amarelo, fase cerrado, na Fazenda Santo Izidro, município de Salto,SP. determinou-se a acumulação de Ca, Mg e S no caule, ramos, folhas e frutos durante as fases fenológicas de repouso, granação e maturação. Concluiu-se que: a maior acumulação de Ca pela parte aérea nos meses de julho, janeiro e junho ocorre em cafeeiros com cinco anos; a acumulação de Mg e S varia em função das épocas. O cafeeiro aos cinco anos de campo exporta através da colheita, em função do conteúdo total na planta 26% de Ca, 32% de Mg e 37% de S.

From a coffee plantation situated on a Red-Yellow Latossol in the Santo Izidro farm near Salto, State of São Paulo, Brazil, coffee plants two, three, four and five years old were cut near the ground level of the soil at the following grown periods: July (grow almost nihil), January (pin-head stage) and June (ripe stage). The material was divided into stem, branches, leaves and fruits, dried at 80°C and analyzed by conventional laboratory methods. The authors concluded: - The greatest accumulation of calcium, occurs in the aerial parts of the five year old coffee plants during the months of July, January and June. The accumulation of magnesium and sulphur, differ for the different ages of the tree. - Fruits of five year old coffee trees export through-out the following percentage in terms of the total content in the tree: Ca - 2 6%; Mg - 32% and S - 37%.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a influência de oito porta-enxertos no vigor, produção e produtividade da laranjeira 'Pera'. Para a realização deste estudo utilizaram-se plantas de um experimento instalado na Fazenda Experimental Lageado da UNESP, Campus de Botucatu, São Paulo. O delineamento estatístico adotado foi o de blocos ao acaso. Os porta-enxertos estudados foram: limoeiros 'Cravo', 'Volkameriano' e 'Rugoso da Flórida', tangerineiras 'Cleópatra' e 'Sunki', laranjeira 'Caipira', 'Trifoliata' e citrange 'Carrizo'. Os resultados revelaram que os porta-enxertos tangerineiras 'Cleópatra' e 'Sunki' e limoeiro 'Rugoso da Flórida' induziram a um maior desenvolvimento das plantas da laranjeira 'Pera'. Os porta-enxertos limoeiros 'Volkameriano' , 'Rugoso da Flórida' e 'Cravo' e as tangerineiras 'Sunki' e 'Cleópatra' induziram as maiores produções totais. Os maiores valores de índice de eficiência (produção (kg)/m³ copa) foram constatados em plantas sobre 'Trifoliata', citrange 'Carrizo' e limoeiro 'Cravo'. Características desses porta-enxertos são discutidas.

The present study was carried out aiming to determine the effect of different rootstocks in plant vigor and yield of 'Pera' sweet orange, Citrus sinensis, (L.) Osbeck. The research work was conducted in plants of a rootstock experiment, established at Lageado Experimental Farm, UNESP, Botucatu, State of São Paulo. The eight rootstocks studied were: 'Rangpur' lime (Citrus limonia, (L.) Osbeck); 'Volkamer' lemon (Citrus volkameriana, Pasquale); 'Florida rough' lemon (Citrus jambhiri, Lushington); 'Cleopatra' mandarin (Citrus reshni, hort. ex. Tanaka); 'Sunki' mandarin (Citrus sunki, hort. ex. Tanaka); 'Caipira' sweet orange (Citrus sinesis (L.) Osbeck); 'Trifoliata' orange (Poncirus trifoliata, Rasfinesque) and 'Carrizo' citrange (Citrus sinensis x Poncirus trifoliata) . The results showed that 'Cleopatra' and 'Sunki' mandarins and 'Florida' rough lemon induced the greatest plant vigor. The rootstocks 'Volkamer' lemon, 'Florida' rough lemon, 'Rangpur' lime and 'Sunki' and 'Cleopatra' mandarins induced the greatest total yields. The greatest values of eficiency index (yield (kg)/m³ canopy volume) were obtained in plants budded on 'Trifoliata' orange, 'Carrizo' citrange and 'Rangpur' lime. Characteristics of these rootstocks are discussed.

A ocorrência e o nível de contaminação, com aflatoxinas, foram determinadas em 169 amostras de farelo de algodão. As amostras foram fornecidas por indústrias de óleo localizadas nas regiões de Araraquara, Campinas, Bauru, Paraguaçu Paulista, Guararapes, Londrina e Maringá, coletadas nos meses de abril a novembro da safra de 1986. A determinação das aflatoxinas foi feita por cromatografia em camada delgada. Dos resultados pôde-se concluir que: 1) 114 amostras estavam contaminadas com aflatoxina, representando 67,4 5% do total; 2) o nível de contaminação foi baixo, com valores variando de menos de 10 até 40 ¼g/kg (ppb) , sendo que as amostras com 4 0 ppb representaram apenas 12,3 0% do total contaminado; 3) houve diferença significativa (alfa = 0,05) entre as regiões estudadas, tendo a de Maringá apresentado a maior incidência e os teores mais elevados de aflatoxina B1; 4) as regiões de menor incidência e menor teor de aflatoxina B1 foram Araraquara, Campinas e Bauru; 5) não houve predominância da incidência de aflatoxina B1 em qualquer época de toda a safra; 6) em todas as amostras investigadas, a única aflatoxina encontrada foi a B1.

The occurrence and the level of aflatoxin contamination in 169 samples of cottonseed meals were investigated. The samples were furnished by oil processing plants located in the regions of Araraquara, Campinas, Bauru, Paraguaçu Paulista, Guararapes, Londrina and Maringá in the States of São Paulo and Paraná, Brazil, from April to November, 1986. Aflatoxin was determined by thin layer chromatography. From the results the following conclusions could be drawn: (1) 114 samples, representing 67.45%, were contaminated with aflatoxin; (2) the level of contamination was considered low with values ranging from less than 10 to 40 ¼g/ kg. The latter value held only 12.30% of the total positive samples; (3) there was a significant difference (alfa = 0.05) among the regions studied, Maringá showing higher incidence and level of contamination, while Araraquara, Campinas and Bauru lower values; (4) there was no predominance of the aflatoxin incidence any time during the whole processing season; (5) in all investigated samples, B1 was the sole aflatoxin found.

Foi realizado um levantamento em 41 pontos de um Latossolo Vermelho Amarelo, com amostragem de solo e folhas da forrageira "Coast Cross Nº 1", objetivando o estudo de correlações entre as concentrações de nutrientes, alumínio e sódio nas folhas e as análises químicas do solo. As folhas foram secas e analisadas para N, P. As amostras de solo foram secas e analisadas pelos seguintes métodos: índices pH (água e CaCl2 0,01 M), matéria orgânica (digestão úmida) , P, K, B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn e Na pelo extrator de Mehlich. P através de resina iônica. Ca, Mg e Al pelo KC1 1 N. As frações granulométricas foram dispersas por NaOH 0,1 Ne separadas pelo método da pipeta. Foram observadas correlações entre as concentrações de elementos nas folhas e as determinações no solo. Nitrogênio nas folhas correlacionou-se negativamente com fósforo do solo e positivamente com manganês e enxofre. Fósforo nas folhas correlacionou-se negativamente com cálcio do solo.

Correlation studies were carried out among nutrient concentrations in leaf of "Coast Cross nº 1" grass and chemical characteristicas of a Latossolo Vermelho Amarelo (Typic Acrortox) soil at Jaguariuna, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The leaves were dried and analysed for N, P, by convencional methods. Soil samples were dried and analysed by the following methods: soil water pH; soil pH (0.01 M CaCl2); organic matter content by wet digestion; P, K, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn and Na by double acid extration; P by ionic exchange resin in water; Ca, Mg and Al by solution of 1 N KCl. The authors observed: - Leaf nitrogen concentration presents negative correlation with P and K, and positive correlation with Mn and S in the soil. - Leaf concentration presents negative correlation with Ca, and Zn. - Leaf potassium concentration presents negative correlation whit Ca, and Zn. - Leaf potassium concentration presents negative correlation with silt.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi observar o comportamento imunológico de potros recém-nascidos das raças Mangalarga e Anglo-Árabe no que se refere ao processo de aquisição de anticorpos maternos e sua correlação com os níveis de imunoglobulina do colostro. Foram utilizados 7 potros Anglo-Árabe e 6 potros Mangalarga para amostragem de sangue imediatamente após o nascimento (antes de qualquer ingestão de colostro), 24 e 48 horas, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60 e 70 dias após o nascimento, e suas respectivas mães cujo colostro foi amostrado imediatamente após a parição, antes da primeira mamada. A quantificação das imunoglobulinas séricas foi efetuada pelo método do ZST (Zinc Sulfate Turbidity) e para a análise dos resultados foram testados modelos matemáticos que estudam o processo em questão. Para a raça Mangalarga o modelo matemático foi: y = 23,9274 - 0,39766x + 6,4675 10-3 x², com r = 0,91 e P < 0,01 e para a raça Anglo Árabe foi y = 34,161 - 0,756062x + 0,015604x² - 1,013 10-3 x³, com r = 0,96 e P < 0,05. A concentração de IgG do colostro foi estimada com base na concentração de proteína total avaliada pelo método Micro-Kjeldhal. Este estudo permitiu concluir: (1) a presença de maior quantidade de IgG (imunoglobulina G) passiva no sangue dos potros, retardou o estabelecimento dos níveis normais de Ig (imunoglobulina G + M+A+E); (2) animais que adquiriram menor quantidade de IgG passiva apresentaram resposta mais intensa de produção endógena de Ig; (3) a concentração estimada de IgG no colostro apresentou correlação positiva com a concentração sérica dos potros no pico da absorção.

The objective of this work was to study the immunological behavior of newborn Mangalarga and Angle-Arabian foals, the acquiring process of maternal immunoglobulins and its correlation to the levels of colostral immunoglobulin. The Mangalarga and Angle-Arabian foals serum immunoglobulins were analysed by the ZST (Zinc Sulfate Turbidity) method. The results were tested by mathematical models which study the biological process of passibe immunity transfer in that period of observation: to the Mangalarga foals the tested model was: y = 23.9274 - 0.39766X + 6.4675 10-3 x², with r = 0.91 and P < 0.01 to Angle-Arabian foals was: y = 34.161 - 0.756062X + 0.015604X² - 1.013 10-3 x³, with r = 0.96 and P < 0.05. Estimation of the colostral IgG concentration was based on total protein concentration measured by Micro-Kjeldhal method. The results of this study allowed the following conclusions: (1) higher passive IgG in foals serum delayed the stablishment of normal Ig level; (2) animals which acquired lower quantities of passive IgG showed more intense response of endogenous Ig production; (3) colostrum estimated IgG concentration showed positive correlation Serum IgG concentration of the foals at the point of maximal absorption showed positive correlation with colostrum estimated IgG.

Objetivando avaliar os efeitos de diferentes temperaturas do ar, na secagem intermitente sobre a qualidade de sementes de milho, do híbrido duplo AG-162, o presente trabalho foi dividido em três estudos, denominados 1, 2 e 3. Cada estudo envolveu três métodos de secagem: secagem natural, secagem artificial-natural e secagem artificial. Nas secagens artificial-natural e artificial dos três estudos foram utilizadas, respectivamente, as temperaturas do ar de 70, 80 e 9 0°C, durante o processo denominado artificial, (secagem intermitente) . As sementes, após a secagem, foram armazenadas por seis meses e seu comportamento avaliado em quatro épocas (0, 60, 120 e 180 dias), através da determinação do teor de água e dos testes de germinação, envelhecimento rápido, e frio sem solo e em duas épocas (0 e 180 dias) , por meio do exame de sementes infestadas e dos testes de sanidade e de emergência em campo. A reunião das informações obtidas no presente trabalho, considerando temperaturas de ar de secagem de 70, 80 e 9 0°C e reduções do teor de água de 16,5% para 13%, permite as seguintes conclusões: a) a secagem intermitente não causa efeitos prejudiciais à qualidade fisiológica de sementes de milho, b) a incidência de Penicillium spp em sementes de milho pode ser reduzida pelo emprego da secagem intermitente.

The objective of this work was the evaluation of different air temperatures in intermittent drying on the quality of corn seeds, double hybrid AG-162, during the drying process. The study was carried out in three parts named 1, 2 and 3. Each part was made up of three drying methods: natural drying, artificial-natural drying and artificial drying. In the artificial-natural drying and in the artificial drying, air temperatures of 70, 80 and 90°C were used, respectively, during the process named artificial (intermittent drying) . After the drying process, the seeds were stored during six months and evaluation was carried out four times every two months, by determination of moisture content, germination, accelerated aging and cold without soil. In the first and fourth periods, seed infestation, seed health and field emergence tests were put into effect. The analysis and the interpretation of the results, considering the drying process at temperature 70, 8 0 and 90°C and moisture content reducing from 16,5% to 13,0%, permited the following conclusions: a) the intermittent drying did not cause prejudicial effects on the physiological quality of corn seeds; b) the Penicillium spp. incidence on corn seeds may be reduced by means of intermittent drying.

Em uma plantação de cafeeiro (Coffea arabica L. cv. Catuaí) com dois, três, quatro e cinco anos de idade no campo, situada em Latossolo Vermelho Amarelo, fase cerrado, na Fazenda Santo Izidro, município de Salto, SP. , determinou-se a acumulação de matéria seca e absorção de N, P e K no caule, ramos, folhas e frutos, durante as fases fenológicas de repouso, granação e maturação. Concluiu-se que: - Constitui exceção o potássio que mostra os valores mais elevados aos cinco anos, para as três épocas; - A maior acumulação de matéria seca, nitrogênio, fósforo, potássio pela parte aérea nos meses de julho, janeiro e junho, ocorre em cafeeiros com cinco anos; - Em janeiro e junho os cafeeiros de cinco anos acumulam as maiores quantidades de matéria seca e nutrientes nos frutos; - O cafeeiro aos cinco anos de campo exporta através da colheita, em função do conteúdo total na planta 45% de N, 56% de P, 62% de K.

O efeito de concentrações de até 80 ppm de nitrito sobre a fermentação alcoólica foi estudado com levedura de panificação (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). Houve aumento no tempo de fermentação com adição de nitrito sem afetar a produção de etanol. Com a adição de 60 e 80 ppm de NO2-, ocorreu redução na viabilidade celular e brotamento acompanhada por aumento no acúmulo de trealose e glicogênio. Aumentando a concentração de nitrito houve aumento no álcool n-propílico e redução nos teores de álcoois isobutílico e isoamílico.

The effect of nitrite up to 80 ppm on alcoholic fermentation was studied with baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). There was an increase in fermentation time but not effect on ethanol yield. With the addition of 60 and 80 ppm NO2- there was a reduction on cell viabilitty and budding with correspondent increase on trehalose and glycogen accumulation. Increasing nitrite concentration resulted in increase on n-propilic alcohol level and a reduction on isobutilic and isoamilic alcohols content.

Este trabalho teve o escopo de dar a público os resultados das análises efetuadas num total de 625 amostras de amendoim descascado, na sua maioria HPS ("hand pick selected"), durante os anos de 1988 (517) e 1989 (108). Considerando que a legislação brasileira permite um máximo de 30 /¼g/kg, somadas as aflatoxinas B1 e G1, os resultados mostraram que em 1988, 52% das amostras (correspondentes a lotes), estavam contaminadas e em 1989, 34%. Os níveis médios de aflatoxina nas amostras contaminadas foram de 13 3,8 ¼g/kg em 1988 e 414,8 ¼g/kg em 1989, que podem ser considerados elevados. O contingente de lotes utilizáveis pela indústria foi de 67% em 1988 e 76% em 1989 (correspondentes às amostras com níveis não detectáveis e abaixo de 30 ¼g/kg).

This paper reports the analysis of 625 samples of shelled peanuts, mostly hand pick selected (HPS), during the years of 1988 (517) and 1989 (108) . Considering that the Brazilian legislation permits a maximum of 30 ¼g/kg of aflatoxin B1+G1, the results showed that in 1988, 52% of the samples (mostly corresponding to lots) were contaminated and in 1989, 34%. The average level of aflatoxin (B1 + G1) in the contaminated samples were 133.8 ¼g/kg in 1988 and 414.8 ¼g/kg in 1989, which can be considered high. The amount of utilizable lots by the food industry, was 67% in 1988 and 76% in 1989 (corresponding to the samples with the levels: not detected and under 30 ¼g/kg).

O parque da ESALQ, implantado no início do século pelo arquiteto paisagista Arsênio Puttemans, tem hoje grande valor científico e histórico, além de se constituir na principal área verde da cidade de Piracicaba. Visando o conhecimento detalhado da vegetação arbustivo-arbórea. Foram plaqueados, mapeados, medidos (altura e DAP) e identificados todos os indivíduos com DAP maior ou igual a 5 cm. Os dados foram analisados em computador, usando o programa FITOPAC, de autoria de Shepherd, G.J. (UNICAMP). Neste trabalho estão apresentados os resultados de três canteiros. O primeiro, ocupando uma área de 382 m², teve amostradas 24 espécies distribuídas por 13 famílias, num total de 88 indivíduos. O valor do índice de diversidade H' foi de 2,53, sendo que a espécie de maior destaque no IVC foi Aspidosperma ramiflorum Mull.Arg.. O segundo canteiro, ocupando uma área de 2694 m², teve amostradas 21 famílias representadas por 33 espécies, num total de 212 indivíduos. O valor do índice de diversidade H' foi de 2,68 e destacaram-se duas espécies na ordenação do IVC: Esenbeckia leiocarpa Engl, e Tipuana tipu (Benth.) O.Kuntze. O terceiro canteiro, ocupando 3786 m², teve amostradas 28 famílias, representadas por 66 espécies e 419 indivíduos. O índice H' obtido foi de 3,50. Neste canteiro as espécies com destaque na ordenação do IVC foram: Aspidosperma cylindrocarpum Mull.Arg. , Machaerium villosum Vog., Centrolobium tomentosum Guill. e Myrcia laurotteana Camb.

The ESALQ park, was criated by Arsenio Puttemans, a belgian architect, in the early 20th century. Today this park has an important cientific and historical purpose and is the Piracicaba city main green area. This work tries to present data of a floristic and fitossociological survey, to advice the management of this important area. All the over 5 cm DBH trees were numbered, measured , identified and mapped . The fitossociological parameters were obteined by FITOPAC software (SHEPHERD, 1988). Three beds were analysed. The first bed, a 382 square meters size one, has 24 species from 13 families, amounting 88 individuals. This area Shannon-Weaver diversity index (H') was 2.53 . The eminent species was Aspidosperma ramiflorum Mull.Arg. The second bed, a 2694 square meters size one, has 33 species from 21 families, amounting 212 individuals. The H' value was 2.68, and the main species were Esenbeckia leiocarpa Engl. and Tipuana tipu (Benth) O.Kuntze. The third bed, a 3786 square meters size one, has 66 species from 28 families, amounting 419 individuals. The H' value was 3.50, and the main species were Aspidosperma cylindrocarpum Mull.Arg.; Machaerium villosum Vog.; CentrolojbiuTn tomentosum Guill. and Myrcia laurotteana Camb.

A pesquisa foi realizada para comparar os efeitos de diversos fatores (temperatura, pH, concentração de sacarose, 2,4-dinitrofenol e fontes de nitrogênio) sobre a produção de glicerol por Saccharomyces uvarum IZ-1904 e Saccharomyces cerevisiae (M-3 00A e de panificação) durante a fermentação alcoólica. A quantidade de glicerol foi fortemente influenciada pela linhagem da levedura. Com a levedura IZ-1904 houve menor produção de glicerol do que M-300-A e de panificação em todas as condições estudadas. Mais glicerol foi significativamente formado por fermentação a 34°C do que a 25°C e 12°C. Em pH 4.5 houve maior produção de glicerol do que a pH 3.0. A adição de 18 ppm de 2,4-dinitrofenol provocou decréscimo no glicerol formado e esse decréscimo foi maior com as leveduras M-300-A e de panificação do que com IZ-1904. O aumento da concentração de sacarose levou a maior produção de glicerol.

This study was carried out to compare the effects of several factors (temperature, pH, sucrose concentration, 2,4-dinitrophenol and nitrogen sources) on glycerol production by Saccharomyces uvarum IZ-19 04 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (M-300-A and baker's yeast) during alcoholic fermentation. The strain of yeast strongly influenced the amount of glycerol. With IZ-1904 there was lower production of glycerol than M-3 00-A and baker's yeast in all conditions studied. Significantly more glycerol was formed by fermentation at 34°C than at 25°C and 12°C. At pH 4.5 there was higher glycerol production than at pH 3.0. Addition of 18 ppm 2,4-dinitrophenol decreased the amount of glycerol formed, and the decrease was greater with M-300-A and baker's yeast than IZ-1904. The increase of sucrose concentrations led to a higher production of glycerol.
