ABSTRACT Single-rule management is often adopted for various tropical forest timber species due to limited knowledge on species-specific growth and the relationship between logging intensity and recovery time. This study provides information to support sustainable management of Goupia glabra by simulating its wood stock recovery over a 35-year period following logging using data from six areas in the Brazilian Amazon. Monitoring periods after the first harvest cycle varyed from 16 to 29 years, and logging intensity from 0.000 to 0.696 m² ha-1. Tree density of G. glabra varied from 0 to 22 trees ha-1 and dominance from 0.00 to 7.39 m² ha-¹. Frequency of tree diameters was almost evenly distributed across diameter classes, slightly higher in the first (20-30 cm) class. These parameters generated estimations of recovery rate from 12 to 85%, showing that 35 years is insufficient for trees with DBH ≥ 20 cm in all study areas to grow and replace the stock of trees with DBH ≥ 50 cm harvested during the first cycle. Minimum recovery periods from 48 to 83 years were estimated to guarantee the recovery of the wood stock in the study areas. These findings reinforce the need to adapt management rules according to the population dynamics of each timber species and each logging area, and suggest the need for changes in the current legal requirements that define forest management in the Amazon. RESUMO Manejo de regra única é frequentemente adotado para várias espécies madeireiras de floresta tropical devido ao conhecimento limitado sobre o crescimento e a relação entre intensidade de exploração e tempo de recuperação de cada espécie. Este estudo fornece informações para subsidiar o manejo sustentável de Goupia glabra por meio da simulação da recuperação do estoque de madeira em um período de 35 anos usando dados de seis áreas na Amazônia brasileira. Períodos de monitoramento após o primeiro ciclo de colheita variaram de 16 a 29 anos e intensidades de exploração de 0.000 a 0.696 m² ha-1. ABSTRACT Deforestation, mining, pollution and the construction of hydroelectric plants are among the main risks for biological communities, ecosystems and indigenous peoples. In the Brazilian Amazon, historically there has been political pressure to reduce the constitutional rights of indigenous peoples, especially regarding mining activities and the construction of hydroelectric plants. This culminated in a law proposal allowing mining in indigenous lands (PL 191/2020), proposed during the last presidential term in Brazil (2018-2022), which sparked a heated debate in both the legal and ethical spheres. In this article we present objective arguments for the negative effects of mining on indigenous lands, using PL 191/2020 as a model to debate the consequences of such policies for biodiversity, ecosystem services, increased risks for humans due to pollutants and epidemics, and how this law violates the main objectives of the Agenda 2030 for sustainable development. Particularly in the Brazilian Amazon, the negative effects of this law on human life quality, economy and the ecosystems are greater than the supposed positive effects projected into the future. We suggest rethinking the feasibility of mining on indigenous lands and reiterate the importance of conserving these lands and other protected areas in the Amazon intact as a heritage of all Brazilians and the wider human kind. RESUMO O desmatamento, a mineração, a poluição e a construção de usinas hidrelétricas estão entre os principais riscos para as comunidades biológicas, os ecossistemas e os povos indígenas. Na Amazônia brasileira, historicamente tem havido pressão política para reduzir os direitos constitucionais dos povos indígenas, especialmente no que diz respeito às atividades de mineração e à construção de usinas hidrelétricas. Isso culminou em uma proposta de lei que permite a mineração em terras indígenas (PL 191/2020), proposta durante o último mandato presidencial no Brasil (2018-2022), que gerou um acalorado debate tanto na esfera jurídica quanto na esfera ética. ABSTRACT When threatened, snakes are capable of producing defensive sounds emitted at a frequency above 1,500 Hz. However, their auditory sensitivity is lower (between 200 and 450 Hz). RESUMO Quando ameaçadas, as serpentes são capazes de produzir sons defensivos emitidos em uma frequência acima de 1,500 Hz. No entanto, sua sensibilidade auditiva é mais baixa (entre 200 e 450 Hz). ABSTRACT Apeiba (Malvaceae, Grewioideae) is an important component of the Neotropical flora, but taxonomic knowledge of its species is limited, particularly within the Amazon region. This study aimed to provide an updated taxonomic treatment of Apeiba native to Brazil, with focus on Amazonian collections. Species of Apeiba are trees with large yellowish-white flowers with a very particular fruit, an indehiscent capsule, usually globose to slightly flattened, covered either by long and numerous bristles, or densely apiculate. ABSTRACT Coating medicated fish feed with a polymer minimizes the chances of drug leaching into the water. Tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) is an economically important Amazonian fish frequently parasitized by the acanthocephalan Neoechinorhynchus buttnerae. In this study, we compared the effect of ethylcellulose (EC 0.75%) coating of feed medicated with the antihelminthic albendazole (ABZ 10 mg kg bw-1) and uncoated feed on treatment efficacy and bioaccumulation of ABZ in naturally parasitized tambaqui during 35 days. Treatment efficacy was 34% and 66% in fish fed uncoated and coated feed, respectively, but did not vary significantly among treatments. Tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) é um peixe amazônico economicamente importante, frequentemente parasitado pelo acantocéfalo Neoechinorhynchus buttnerae. ABSTRACT We present the first Brazilian record of Chiroxiphia napensis, documented by an adult male specimen collected on the right bank of the upper Japurá River. We also compiled verifiable records of all Amazonian taxa in the C. pareola complex to update their range maps. New records extended considerably the ranges of all taxa. By assuming river-delimited distributions to infer areas from point records, we generated a predictive distributional map that suggests testable hypotheses about occurrence in unstudied areas and that pinpoints topics for future research. We interpret C. napensis as endemic to the Amazon-Japurá interfluve, its range extending narrowly beyond this area in the foothills of the Andes. We suggest that the unusual distribution pattern of C. regina could be the result of river avulsion. RESUMO Apresentamos o primeiro registro brasileiro de Chiroxiphia napensis, documentado por um exemplar macho adulto coletado na margem direita do alto Rio Japurá. Também compilamos registros verificáveis de todos os táxons amazônicos do complexo C. pareola para atualizar o mapa de suas distribuições. Novos registros estenderam consideravelmente a distribuição de todos os táxons. Assumindo a premissa de delimitação geográfica por rios para propor áreas a partir de registros pontuais, produzimos um mapa preditivo de distribuição que sugere hipóteses testáveis sobre ocorrência em áreas ainda sem estudos e que aponta tópicos para futuras pesquisas. RESUMO As aves silvestres têm grande destaque na transmissão de doenças ao homem, principalmente pela facilidade de acesso à população humana, levantando preocupações sobre o potencial impacto dessa proximidade no contexto da saúde pública. ABSTRACT Wild birds have great prominence in the transmission of diseases to humans, mainly due to their ease of access to human populations, raising concerns about the potential impact of that proximity on public health. The present study reports ARV and PBV occurrence in wild birds from an environmental protection area in the Amazon biome, in Pará state, Brazil. We obtained 155 fecal specimens from 47 species of wild birds for RNA extraction, ARV and PBV detection utilizing molecular methods, nucleotide sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis. ARV prevalence was 0.6% (1/155), being positive in an individual of Myrmotherula longipennis, and PBV prevalence was 1.29% (2/155), affecting two individuals of Guira guira. The PBV strains were assigned to genogroup I based on phylogenetic analysis, and they shared a strong phylogenetic link with strains isolated from different geographic locations. RESUMO O reposicionamento de medicamentos busca descobrir novas aplicações para um medicamento já aprovado no mercado, resultando em soluções mais rápidas e de menor custo, geralmente utilizadas para doenças que recebem pouco investimento, como a leishmaniose tegumentar. Nesse contexto, a hesperidina, aprovada comercialmente como Daflon®, tem despertado interesse científico por ser um flavonoide pertencente ao grupo das chalconas, classe que possui potencial antileishmania. O presente estudo avaliou a atividade antileishmania in vitro e in vivo da hesperidina comercial. ABSTRACT Drug repositioning seeks to discover new applications for a drug that has already been approved in the market, resulting in faster and lower cost solutions, generally used for diseases that receive little investment, such as cutaneous leishmaniasis. In this context, hesperidin, commercially approved as Daflon®, is a flavonoid that belongs to the chalcones group, a class that has antileishmanial potential. The present study evaluated the in vitro and in vivo antileishmanial activity of commercial hesperidin. Hesperidin (9 to 0.56 mg mL-1) was tested against promastigote and amastigote forms of four dermotropic species of Leishmania, namely L. (L.) amazonensis, L. (V.) guyanensis, L. (V.) braziliensis and L. (V.) naiffi. For the in vivo tests, hamsters were infected in the snout and the lesions were treated with intralesional hesperidin. RESUMO Na região Amazônica, o óleo de andiroba (Carapa guianensis) é um dos produtos mais utilizados pela população local devido às suas propriedades medicinais. Anteriormente, nosso grupo descreveu a atividade leishmanicida de três frações do óleo de andiroba ricas em limonóides. Este trabalho objetivou avaliar a atividade antioxidante e alterações ultraestruturais em Leishmania amazonensis tratadas com essas frações ricas em limonóides do óleo de andiroba: 6α,11β-diacetoxigedunina; 11β-hidroxigedunina; e uma fração com ambas 6α,11β-diacetoxigedunina + 11β-hidroxigedunina. A atividade antioxidante foi avaliada pelo método DPPH, e alterações ultraestruturais foram avaliadas por microscopia eletrônica de transmissão. ABSTRACT In the Amazon region, andiroba (Carapa guianensis) oil is among the most used products by the local population due to its medicinal properties. Previously, our group described the leishmanicidal activity of three limonoid-rich fractions from andiroba oil. This work aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity and ultrastructural changes in Leishmania amazonensis treated with these limonoid-rich fractions from andiroba oil: 6α,11β-diacetoxygedunin; 11β-hydroxygedunin; and a fraction with both 6α,11β-diacetoxygedunin +11β-hydroxygedunin. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by the DPPH method and ultrastructural changes were evaluated by transmission electron microscopy. ABSTRACT Bird droppings are an unusual food resource for coprophagous insects and used mostly by opportunistic decomposers. Among them, dung beetles feed mainly on dung, although the species differ in their trophic plasticity. Here we report a record of a dung beetle, Canthidium cf. gracilipes, reaching and manipulating the dropping of a passeriform bird, Dendrocincla fuliginosa (Dendrocolaptidae). The behavior was observed in an urban forest fragment located in the Amazonian city of Manaus, Brazil. Two hours after the bird defecated, the dung beetle reached the dropping and started manipulating them with its fore- and hindlegs. It did not eat the dung, though. RESUMO Glândulas cróceas são estruturas visíveis, definidas por seu formato arredondado e coloração amarelada. Elas possuem grande importância taxonômica, sendo utilizadas para delimitar a seção Timutua, uma das 14 seções do subgênero Polygala, pertencente ao gênero Polygala, o mais representativo da família Polygalaceae, com cerca de 120 espécies registradas para o Brasil. Porém, as glândulas cróceas ainda carecem de informações mais detalhadas sobre sua natureza. Dessa forma, o presente estudo caracterizou a distribuição, estrutura e histoquímica das glândulas cróceas nos órgãos reprodutivos e vegetativos aéreos de Polygala adenophora. Amostras de P. adenophora em diferentes estágios de desenvolvimento (botões florais, flores totalmente desenvolvidas e frutos), assim como caule e folhas extraídas dos 1º, 3º, 6º e 9º nós, foram obtidas em uma área costeira no estado do Pará, Brasil. As amostras foram fixadas em FAA50 ou formalina neutra tamponada e submetidas a microscopia de luz e microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Foram realizados testes histoquímicos para substâncias lipofílicas e hidrofílicas. ABSTRACT Croceous glands are visible structures defined by their rounded shape and yellowish color. They have great taxonomic importance, being used to delimit the Timutua section, one of the 14 sections of the subgenera Polygala, genera Polygala, the most representative of the family Polygalaceae, with about 120 species recorded in Brazil. However, detailed information about the nature of croceous glands is still missing. Thus, this study aimed to characterize the origin, structure, and function of the croceous glands in the floral structures, fruits, leaf blades, and stems of Polygala adenophora. Samples of P. adenophora at different developmental stages (flower buds, fully developed flowers and fruits), as well as stems, and leaves collected from the 1st, 3rd, 6th, and 9th nodes were obtained from a coastal area in Pará state, Brazil. RESUMO O selênio (Se) é um mineral antioxidante e tem sido incluído em formulações de rações para peixes na forma orgânica de hidróxi-selenometionina (OH-SeMet). Este estudo avaliou como diferentes concentrações dessa substância, suplementada na dieta, atuam no músculo do tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) antes e após um estressor (transporte). Os peixes juvenis foram divididos em cinco tratamentos recebendo a suplementação de 0,0; 0,3; 0,6; 0,9; 1,2 mg kg-1 de Se por 75 dias. Após esse período, os peixes ficaram expostos ao transporte por quatro horas. A amostragem de tecido muscular para medição dos parâmetros bioquímicos ocorreu no dia 75, antes do transporte, e uma semana após o transporte (dia 83). A atividade das enzimas superóxido dismutase e glutationa-S-transferase não se alterou. ABSTRACT Selenium (Se) is an antioxidant mineral and has been included in fish feed formulations in the organic form of hydroxy-selenomethionine (OH-SeMet). This study evaluated how different concentrations of this substance, supplemented in the diet, act on tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) muscle before and after a stressor (transportation). Juvenile fishes were divided into five treatments receiving 0.0; 0.3; 0.6; 0.9; 1.2 mg kg-1 Se supplementation for 75 days. After that period, the fish were exposed to transportation for four hours. RESUMO A bacteriose da mandioca, causada por Xanthomonas phaseoli pv. manihotis, é uma das doenças mais importantes que afetam a produção de mandioca no mundo, incluindo a Amazônia Oriental brasileira. O uso de microrganismos benéficos, como bactérias endofíticas promotoras de crescimento de plantas, é uma ferramenta eficaz no controle de doenças de muitas culturas. Nesse estudo, dois isolados endofíticos de Klebsiella (26Y e 29Y) obtidos de mandioca foram avaliados para o controle da bacteriose da mandioca, por meio de ensaios antagônicos e controle biológico da doença em plantas inoculadas por irrigação do substrato e pulverização foliar em condições de casa de vegetação. Os dois isolados inibiram o crescimento in vitro do patógeno, e controlaram pelo menos 90% da severidade da doença em plantas inoculadas por ambos métodos de inoculação. ABSTRACT Cassava bacterial blight (CBB), caused by Xanthomonas phaseoli pv. manihotis, is one of the most important diseases affecting cassava production worldwide, including regions of Brazil in the eastern Amazon. The use of beneficial microorganisms, such as endophytic plant growth-promoting bacteria, has emerged as an effective tool for controlling diseases in many crops. Here, two Klebsiella endophytic isolates (26Y and 29Y) isolated from cassava were evaluated for the control of CBB through antagonistic assays and biological control of the disease in plants inoculated by irrigating the substrate and by foliar spray under greenhouse conditions. The two isolates were able to inhibit the in vitro growth of the pathogen, as well as to control the disease severity by at least 90% in plants inoculated by both inoculation methods. Foi encontrada em florestas de terra-firme e igapó nos estados do Amazonas e Pará, Brasil. ABSTRACT This study presents a new orchid species of the genus Catasetum belonging to the group of species with symmetrical and parallel antennae. It was found in terra-firme and floodplain forests in the Brazilian states of Amazonas and Pará. We provide a formal description of the new species, images, and notes on distribution, habitat, phenology, flower visitors and preliminary conservation status. RESUMO Previsões precisas do volume de madeira são críticas em florestas hiperdiversas, pois cada espécie tem características específicas de tamanho e forma. Embora modelos genéricos em nível multiespécie sejam amplamente utilizados em florestas manejadas na Amazônia, eles estão sujeitos a maiores vieses devido à variabilidade interespecífica. Usamos um extenso banco de dados de volume de madeira coletado em florestas manejadas para testar a hipótese de que modelos genéricos violam a suposição de independência, pois as previsões variam de acordo com o tamanho específico da espécie. Nossa hipótese foi comprovada pois os resíduos do modelo genérico foram condicionados à espécie e ao tamanho específico. Os modelos multiníveis foram mais precisos nos procedimentos de ajuste e de validação e contabilizaram a variância derivada de espécies e do tamanho específico, fornecendo previsões mais confiáveis. ABSTRACT Accurate wood volume predictions are critical in hyperdiverse forests because each species has specific size and shape traits. Although generic models at a multispecies level were widely used in Amazonian managed forests, they are subject to more significant bias due to interspecific variability. We used an extensive database of wood volume collected in managed forests to test the hypothesis that generic models violate the independence assumption due to that predictions vary with species-specific size. Our hypothesis was proved as residuals of the generic model were conditioned to species and specific size. The multilevel models were more accurate both in fitting and validation procedures, and accounted for variance derived from species and specific size, providing a more reliable prediction. However, we found that the size-specific models have a similar predictive ability to species-specific models for new predictions. This implies more practical estimates in hyperdiverse forests where fitting species-specific models can be complex.
