ABSTRACT Storage is one of the main stages during grain production. The present study was conducted to evaluate the use of silo bags as an alternative for storing landrace cowpea grains. The experiment used samples of the Arigozinho, Manteiguinha, and Quarentão cowpea varieties from Cruzeiro do Sul - Acre, harvested in the 2021 crop season. The samples (500 g) were stored in raffia and silo bags for 30, 60, 90, and 120 days. The experimental design was completely randomized, arranged in a split-plot-in-time scheme (2 × 5) with four replicates. Storage conditions represented the plots: silo bags and raffia bags. The subplots comprised five storage conditions: 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 days for each landrace cowpea variety. The insect species identified in all varieties was Zabrotes subfasciatus, with infestation ranging from 49% to 98% in raffia bags and less than 10% in silo bags over 120 days. A depreciation in grain quality was observed during storage in raffia bags. There was increase in electrical conductivity, fluctuations in water content, and reductions in bulk density and germination due to the higher degree of infestation in all the investigated varieties. The grains stored in silo bags showed minimal variations over the 120 days, maintaining their initial quality throughout the storage period. RESUMO O armazenamento é uma etapa crucial durante a produção de grãos. Este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de avaliar o uso de silo bolsa como alternativa no armazenamento de grãos crioulos de feijão-caupi. Para o estudo utilizou-se amostras de feijão-caupi, das variedades Arigozinho, Manteiguinha e Quarentão, procedentes do município de Cruzeiro do Sul - Acre, safra 2021. As amostras de 500 g foram armazenadas em silos bolsa e sacos de ráfia, durante 30, 60, 90, 120 dias. O experimento foi inteiramente casualizado, com parcelas subdivididas no tempo (2 × 5), com quatro repetições. As parcelas foram as condições de armazenamento: silo bolsa e sacos de ráfia, e as subparcelas, os períodos de armazenamento: 0, 30, 60, 90 e 120 dias para cada variedade crioula de feijão-caupi. Resumen Se informa sobre nuevas asociaciones entre el parasitoide Habrobracon hebetor (Say) y dos géneros de coleópteros plaga de postcosecha en frutos descascarados de Juglans regia L, Carpophilus Stephens (Nitidulidae) y Oryzaephilus Ganglbauer (Silvanidae) en la provincia de La Rioja. Además, se registró este parasitoide a partir de larvas de Plodia interpunctella (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). Se amplía la distribución de H. hebetor para la provincia de La Rioja. Se proporcionan datos sobre porcentajes de parasitoidismo.

Abstract New associations are reported between the parasitoid Habrobracon hebetor (Say) and two genera of postharvest pest coleopters on shelled fruits of Juglans regia L, Carpophilus Stephens (Nitidulidae) and Oryzaephilus Ganglbauer (Silvanidae) in the province of La Rioja. Abstract The maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky, 1855 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), generally reaches pest status in stored grain. Chemical control is the most used method for population suppression, which can cause adverse impacts, thus creating a need for alternatives such as using inert powders. The present work aims to verify the effect of different concentrations of different types of inert powders on the mortality of S. zeamais in the laboratory. To this end, the experiments were carried out in a completely randomized design, with 13 treatments and four replications, ten adults per replication, where the effect of different inert powders (basalt powder, gypsum powder, and diatomaceous earth) was tested at concentrations of 0.025 g, 0.05 g, 0.1 g and 0.2 g/20 g of corn grains. Variance, normality, and homoscedasticity tests were applied in addition to controlling efficiency (CE%), median lethal time (TL50), and survival curves. All treatments caused mortality in S. zeamais, and all concentrations with diatomaceous earth were more efficient, with 100% mortality at 20 days, followed by the treatment of 0.2 g of gypsum powder/20 g of corn grains, with superior efficiency, to 95% in 20 days and 100% in 30 days. Resumo O gorgulho-do-milho, Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky, 1855 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), geralmente atinge o status de praga em grãos armazenados. O controle químico é o método mais utilizado para sua supressão populacional, podendo causar impactos adversos, surge assim a necessidade de alternativas como o uso de pós inertes. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo verificar o efeito de diferentes concentrações de diferentes tipos de pós inertes na mortalidade de S. zeamais no laboratório. Para tanto, os experimentos foram realizados em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com 13 tratamentos e quatro repetições, 10 adultos por repetição. Onde testou-se o efeito de diferentes pós inertes (pó de basalto, pó de gesso e terra diatomácea), nas concentrações de 0,025 g, 0,05 g, 0,1 g e 0,2 g/20 g de grãos de milho. Sendo aplicados testes de variância, normalidade e homocedasticidade, além de eficiência de controle (CE%), tempo letal mediano (TL50) e curvas de sobrevivência. Resumo O uso excessivo de inseticidas levou à resistência de alguns organismos patogênicos (nematódeos, bactérias e fungos), à contaminação ambiental e à presença de resíduos perigosos. Portanto, o objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a mortalidade de metabólitos sintéticos derivados de estudos anteriores com cogumelos comestíveis contra o gorgulho-da-soja Rhyssomatus nigerrimus Fahraeus (Curculonidae) por causa da relevância do controle de pragas em uma cultura economicamente importante. Além disso, este é um dos primeiros estudos em que as moléculas fúngicas comestíveis são avaliadas para o controle desses insetos. Inicialmente, dois testes in vitro (efeito tóxico e imersão) foram avaliados contra R. nigerrimus. Nesses testes, a sensibilidade e a viabilidade foram determinadas no controle de 2% de Tween na água. Para esses dois testes, os metabólitos sintéticos – ácido pentadecanoico (PNA), ácido palmítico (PMA), ácido esteárico (STA), ácido linoleico (LNA) e β-sitosterol (βT) – foram avaliados individualmente, bem como a combinação dos 5, “a fração de padrões (E1)”. Com base nos resultados obtidos, o teste de imersão foi selecionado para avaliar as misturas de dois padrões (1. PMA + βT, 2. PMA + PNA, 3. PMA + LNA, 4. PMA + STA, 5. STA + βT, 6. STA + PNA, 7. Abstract Excessive use of insecticides has led to resistance of some pathogenic organisms (nematodes, bacteria and fungi), environmental contamination, and the presence of hazardous residues. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate synthetic metabolites derived from previous studies with edible mushrooms against the soybean weevil Rhyssomatus nigerrimus Fahraeus (Curculonidae) because of the relevance of pest control in an economically important crop. Furthermore, this is one of the first studies where edible fungal molecules are evaluated for the control of these insects. Initially, two in vitro tests (toxic effect and immersion) were evaluated against R. nigerrimus. In these tests, sensitivity and viability were determined in the 2% Tween control in water. For these two tests, the synthetic metabolites pentadecanoic acid (PNA), palmitic acid (PMA), stearic acid (STA), linoleic acid (LNA), β-sitosterol (βT) were evaluated individually as well as in combinations, “the fraction of standards (E1)”. Resumo A etologia dos insetos é um fator importante quando se deseja relizar manejo de pragas. Através deste conhecimento, é possível manipular atividades comportamentais, repelir, ou atrair os insetos de acordo com as necessidades e interesses. O gorgulho do milho Sitophilus zeamais (Mots., 1855) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), uma das principais pragas de grãos armazenados tem sido alvo de estudos de alterações comportamentais através de substâncias naturais devido à sua resistência a diferentes classes de insecticidas. Assim, este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito de concentrações subletais de extrato de neem e do óleo de copaíba sobre o comportamento de movimentação de S. zeamais. As características comportamentais consideradas foram: a atividade de caminhamento, a frequência do contato dos insetos com a massa de grãos tratada, e o tempo gasto para realização destes comportamentos. A atividade de caminhamento do S. zeamais aumentou quando os insetos foram expostos ao extrato de Neem e ao óleo de copaíba. Em geral, o extrato de Neem e o óleo de Copaíba induziram mais contato com a massa de grãos do que o controle, sugerindo um efeito atrativo sobre o inseto, contudo este efeito foi mais significativo para o óleo de Neem. O comportamento do inseto foi alterado, apresentando um caminhamento específico devido aos estímulos do óleo de copaíba e do extrato de Neem. Estes resultados indicam que o óleo de copaíba e o extrato de Neem podem ser alternativas potenciais para o controle do S. zeamais em produtos armazenados, uma vez que alterações no comportamento desta praga podem reduzir os danos qualitativos e quantitativos nos grãos. Assim, o desenvolvimento de produtos baseados no óleo de copaíba e no extrato de Neem pode ser útil para o manejo de pragas de armazenamento.

Abstract Insects' ethology is an important factor when it is desired to carry out pest management. This knowledge makes it possible to manipulate behavioral activities, repel, or attract insects according to needs and interests. The maize weevil Sitophilus zeamais (Mots., 1855) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), one of the main stored grain pests, has been the target of studies of behavioral changes studies through natural substances due to its resistance to different insecticidal classes. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of sublethal concentrations of neem extract and copaiba oil on the locomotor behavior of S. zeamais. The behavioral characteristic considered were walking activity, the frequency of contact of insects with the treated grain mass, and the time spent for this behavior. The walking activity of the S. zeamais increased with exposure to Neem extract and Copaiba oil. In general, the Neem extract and Copaiba oil-induced more contact with grain mass than the control, suggesting an attractive effect on the insect, however more significant for the Neem oil. The insect's behavior was altered, presenting a specific path due to Copaiba oil and Neem extract stimuli. These results indicate that Copaiba oil and Neem extract can be a potential alternative for controlling S. zeamais on stored products since changes in this pests' behavior can reduce qualitative and quantitative grain damage. Thus, the development of products based on Copaiba oil and Neem extract may be helpful for storage pest management.

A tesourinha Marava arachidis (Dermaptera: Labiidae), é uma importante referência como predador em diversas culturas agrícolas, além de ser de fácil criação em laboratório. Com o objetivo de analisar o potencial biocontrole de larvas de A. grandis grandis por M. arachidis, foi realizado um estudo de capacidade predatória utilizando um modelo de resposta funcional. Larvas de A. grandis grandis foram expostas ao predador nas densidades: 1, 2, 4, 6 e 8 larvas (= presa/predador/placa de Petri), com 30 repetições em cada densidade. O contato entre o predador e a presa ocorreu durante 24 horas; após esse período, o nível de predação de M. arachidis foi avaliado com base na proporção de larvas predadas. O coeficiente de regressão logística linear foi utilizado com um modelo linear generalizado beta-binomial para determinar a resposta funcional. O sinal negativo do coeficiente linear e os testes de ajuste revelaram uma resposta funcional quadrática ou tipo II, com o número de presas variando de 1,00 larva (densidade de 1 larva/predador) a 6,50 larvas (densidade de 8 larvas/predador). Abstract Anthonomus grandis grandis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is a pest with a large potential for destruction in cotton crops, causing damage to the cotton reproductive structures. The earwig Marava arachidis (Dermaptera: Labiidae), is an important reference as a predator in several crops and being easy to rear in the laboratory. To analyze the potential biocontrol of M. arachidis of A. grandis grandis larvae, a study of predatory capacity was conducted using a functional response model. A. grandis grandis larvae were exposed to the predator at densities 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 larvae (= prey/predator / Petri dish), with 30 replications at each density. Contact between the predator and the prey occurred for 24 hours; after this period, the level of predation of M. arachidis was assessed based on the proportion of preyed larvae. The linear logistic regression coefficient was used with a beta-binomial generalized linear model to determine the functional response. The negative signal of the linear coefficient and the goodness-of-fit tests revealed a quadratic or type II functional response, with the number of prey varying from 1.00 larva (density of 1 larva/predator) to 6.50 larvae (density of 8 larvae/predator). Resumo A cultura do milho, por sua fácil adaptação aos mais diversos agroecossistemas, se espalha por diferentes regiões do mundo, tornando-se uma das mais importantes culturas agrícolas. Nesta cultura, os insetos-praga se destacam por causar prejuízos tanto no campo quanto nos armazéns. A aplicação de óleos essenciais pode ser uma importante técnica a ser investigada no manejo de insetos devido à sua conhecida atividade inseticida e baixo risco o meio ambiente. O objetivo do deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito inseticida e repelente de óleos essenciais de capim-limão exótico (Cymbopogon citratus) e capim-limão nativo (Elionurus sp.) para o manejo do gorgulho do milho (Sitophilus zeamais (Mots., 1855, Coleoptera: Curculionidae). A análise química dos óleos feita por CG-MS mostrou que a composição química do capim-limão nativo e exótico é semelhante, entretanto, as espécies exóticas apresentaram maior número de compostos. Os óleos essenciais de capim-limão nativo e exótico têm eficiência na mortalidade do gorgulho do milho, e verifica-se que o aumento na dose aplicada reflete na redução do tempo de exposição do inseto até que ocorra a morte. O óleo essencial de ambas as espécies apresentou capacidade repelente em todos os momentos avaliados. Assim, pode-se afirmar que ambas as espécies possuem capacidade e potencial para serem utilizadas no manejo do gorgulho do milho, podendo ser uma alternativa para a agricultura familiar e produção orgânica.

Abstract Corn crop, due to its easy adaptation to the most diverse agroecosystems, spreads throughout the different regions of the world, making it one of the most important agricultural crops. In this crop, pest insects stand out for causing losses both in the field and in warehouses. The application of essential oils can be an important technique to be investigated in the management of insects due to its known insecticidal activity and low risk to the environment. The objective of the work was to value the insecticide and repellent effect of essential oils of exotic lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) and native lemongrass (Elionurus sp.) for the management of maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais (Mots., 1855, Coleoptera: Curculionidae)). The chemical analysis of the oils made by CG-MS showed that the chemical composition of the native and exotic lemongrass is similar, however, the exotic species presented a greater number of compounds. The essential oils of native and exotic lemon grass have efficiency on maize weevil mortality, and it is verified that the increase in the applied dose reflects in a reduction in the insect's exposure time for death to occur. The essential oil of both species showed repellent capacity at all times evaluated. Thus, it can be said that both species have the capacity and potential to be used in the management of corn weevil, and can be an alternative for smallhorders farmers and organic production.

Resumo Uma das pragas mais comuns das palmeiras é o gorgulho vermelho da palmeira, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Olivier. Cinco dietas artificiais foram avaliadas para criar RPW e facilitar seus estudos comportamentais e biológicos. O desenvolvimento de R. ferruginus foi estudado nas dietas artificiais testadas baseadas principalmente em pedaços de caule de cana-de-açúcar (1ª dieta; controle), abóbora-doce (2ª dieta), cana-de-açúcar + abóbora-doce (3ª dieta), batata-doce (4ª dieta) e cana-de-açúcar moída + batata-doce (5ª dieta) em sala de criação (28 ± 1 °C e 75 ± 5 UR%) na Faculdade de Agricultura do distrito de Benha. Os aspectos biológicos, pré-oviposição, oviposição, durações de larvas e pupas, a longevidade de machos e fêmeas adultos e o período de geração de R. ferrugineus foram todos estimados. Além disso, o impacto dessas dietas artificiais nas quantidades de proteínas totais, carboidratos e lipídios foi determinado nas larvas adultas. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que o inseto manifestou os menores períodos larval e pupal e a maior longevidade para machos e fêmeas quando a criação de R. ferruginus ocorreu em uma dieta artificial à base de batata-doce como uma forma bem-sucedida e econômica para a criação massal do gorgulho vermelho da palmeira em condições de laboratório. Larvas alimentadas com a dieta 4 (batata-doce) foram as que apresentaram a menor duração (114,80 dias), enquanto a 1ª dieta (pedaços de caule de cana-de-açúcar) foi a que apresentou o maior período (125,00 ± dias). Da mesma forma para a pupação e longevidade de machos e fêmeas, os períodos mais curtos resultaram da alimentação das larvas na 4ª dieta (14,65, 49,40 e 48,0 dias, respectivamente). Ao contrário, o período pupal mais longo foi relatado com a 5ª dieta (15,70 dias). A maior porcentagem de eclodibilidade dos ovos (96,53%) resultou da criação de larvas de R. ferruginus na 4ª dieta. As análises químicas das larvas adultas indicaram que os maiores teores de carboidratos totais (45,57 µg/g), lipídios (28,46 µg/g) e proteínas (20,01µg/g) foram obtidos no caso de larvas criadas na 1ª e 4ª dietas, respectivamente. Consequentemente, o desenvolvimento dos estádios de R. ferruginus foi ligeiramente menor tanto na 1ª quanto na 4ª dieta artificial. Assim, ambas foram dietas artificiais bem-sucedida e econômica para o desenvolvimento de RPW em condições de laboratório. Portanto, este estudo adicionou ingredientes alternativos valiosos para preparar substrato alimentar mais prático e econômico para a criação do gorgulho para auxiliar na proposta de seu manejo e conservação em plantações de palmeiras.

Abstract One of the most common palm pests is the red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Olivier. Five artificial diets were evaluated to rear RPW, and to facilitate its behavioral and biological studies. The developmental of R. ferruginus was studied on the tested artificial diets based on primarily composed of sugarcane stem pieces (1st diet; control), sweet pumpkin (2nd diet), ground sugarcane + sweet pumpkin (3rd diet), sweet potato (4th diet) and ground sugarcane + sweet potato (5th diet) under rearing room (28 ± 1 °C and 75 ± 5 RH%) at Faculty of Agriculture in Benha district. The biological aspects, pre-oviposition, oviposition, larval & pupal durations, the longevity of male and female adults and the generation period of R. ferrugineus have all been estimated. Obtained results showed that the insect manifested the shortest larval and pupal periods and the longest longevity for males and females when rearing of R. ferruginus took place on an artificial diet based on sweet potato as a successful and economical for mass rearing of the red palm weevil under laboratory conditions. Larvae fed on diet 4 (sweet potato) was exhibited the shortest duration (114.80 days), while 1st diet (Sugarcane stem pieces) was recorded the longest period (125.00 ± days). Similarly for pupation and both male and female longevity, the shortest periods resulted from larvae feeding on 4th diet (14.65, 49.40 and 48.0 days, respectively). Contrariwise, the longest pupal period was reported with 5th diet (15.70 days). The highest of eggs hatchability % (96.53%) resulted from the rearing nof R. ferruginus larvae on the 4th diet. Chemical analyses of the full-grown larva were indicated that the highest contents of total carbohydrates (45.57 µg/g), lipids (28.46 µg/g) and proteins (20.01µg/g) were obtained in case of larvae reared on 1st and 4th diets, respectively. Consequently, the development of R. ferruginus stages was slightly lower on both 1st and 4th artificial diets. So that, both of them were a successful and economic artificial diet for RPW development under laboratory conditions. Therefore, this study added valuable alternative ingredients to prepare more practical and economical feeding substrate for weevil rearing to help for proposal of its management and conservation in palm plantations.

ABSTRACT Resistant genotypes are a valuable tool in integrated pest management programs of insect pests of stored grains. Here, we screened 90 Brazilian common bean genotypes to select promising sources of resistance to Acanthoscelides obtectus. Thus, bean samples were infested with newly emerged insects, and the number of eggs, emerged insects, developmental time, and larval viability were assessed in a no-choice test. Abstract The technique of terrestrial sampling of boll weevil (BW) populations is expensive and inefficient over large areas, but may be cheaper and more efficient without involving the manipulation of cotton squares. The aim of this study was to develop a technique to sampling cotton squares based on the observation of opened and/or yellowing bracts to determine the need and efficacy of chemical control of BW in cotton crops. The first experiment aimed to estimate the ratio between the number of cotton squares with opened and/or yellowed bracts and that of squares with BW oviposition punctures. The second experiment, aimed to determine the efficacy of chemical control for BW by sampling cotton squares with opened and/or yellowed bracts. The ratio between the number of opened and/or yellowed bracts and the number of cotton squares with oviposition punctures was 2:1. The level and efficiency of chemical control of BW, based on the percentage and sampling of cotton plants with opened and/or yellowed bracts, was 5% and did not differ from the one based on the observation of cotton plants with 10% cotton squares with oviposition punctures by BW females. The control level based on sampling cotton plants with open and/or yellowing bracts was 5%. The efficiency of chemical insecticides using this economic threshold against the BW did not differ from that based on sampling cotton plants with 10% of cotton squares with oviposition punctures by BW females. O objetivo deste estudo foi desenvolver uma técnica de amostragem de botões florais de algodoeiros, baseada na observação de brácteas abertas e/ou amarelecidas, para determinar a necessidade de controle químico do bicudo em lavouras de algodão. O primeiro experimento teve por objetivo estimar a razão entre o número de botões florais de algodoeiros com brácteas abertas e/ou amarelecidas e o daqueles com orifícios de oviposição. O segundo experimento teve por objetivo determinar a eficiência do controle químico do bicudo por meio da amostragem de botões florais de algodoeiros com brácteas abertas e/ou amarelecidas. Phlyctinus is an endemic weevil genus of the Cape Floristic Region that comprises eight to ten species, previously classified under the monotypic P. callosus sensu lato concept. Two species of this genus, Phlyctinus callosus and P. xerophilus, are of economic concern to the deciduous fruit and grapevine industry in the Western Cape province of South Africa, causing primary damages and being of phytosanitary concern at the adult stage. The taxonomic revision conducted in 2020 raised doubts whether one of the two species was a newly emerging pest and/or what species was considered in studies before the clarification of species boundaries. Also unclear is whether these species can be controlled similarly using current control measures. The aim of this study therefore is to review the pest status of the two species over time based on museum records, field collections and historical publications, and to clarify how control measure(s) are impacted. We infer that neither species appear to be emerging pests in the region, both being of agricultural significance for at least 80 years. Phlyctinus callosus is mostly distributed along the southern coast, while P. xerophilus is distributed in inland valleys. The two species show similar biology, physiology and ecology in agro-ecosystems, and can be excluded from the host plant canopy using stem-barriers, adults being flightless. As such, it is shown that the naming of P. xerophilus as a pest is mainly a taxonomical clarification within a pre-existing species complex.

RESUMEN Por su alto valor nutricional, el frijol común (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) es la especie más importante para el consumo humano entre las leguminosas de grano comestibles. El objetivo de este estudio fue caracterizar 11 líneas RAZ de frijol común, promisorias por su resistencia contra Zabrotes subfasciatus Boh. En octubre de 2019, se sembraron 11 líneas RAZ del Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT), utilizando un diseño de bloques completos al azar en el Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Agrícolas (INCA), San José de Las Lajas, Cuba. Se evaluaron 22 caracteres cuantitativos y cualitativos del descriptor del frijol común y se realizaron análisis de frecuencia para las características cualitativas y estadígrafos básicos y análisis de componentes principales (ACP) de los atributos cuantitativos. Los caracteres con mayor variabilidad fueron el color primario de la semilla (reportándose 5 diferentes, y siendo el blanco sucio el más frecuente); el color predominante de la vaina en la madurez fisiológica (las cuales presentaron 4 variantes de color, principalmente verdes y amarillas); el aspecto de la testa (destacando el aspecto opaco, registrándose en 6 líneas); así como la ausencia del color alrededor del hilo en 10 de ellas. Los parámetros relacionados con el ciclo biológico presentaron menor variabilidad. El peso de 100 granos correspondió al tipo de grano pequeño. El rendimiento promedio fue 1 685 kg/ha, destacándose la línea ‘RAZ 124’ con 4 237 kg/ha. El ACP explicó el 61.82 % de la variabilidad total e integró las 11 líneas en 4 grupos que caracterizaron su comportamiento. Los resultados indican que las líneas estudiadas pueden incorporarse en el programa de mejoramiento del frijol en Cuba a través de su evaluación en diferentes ambientes regionales para la selección de posibles nuevos cultivares comerciales.

ABSTRACT Due to high nutritional value, common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is the most important species for human consumption among the food grain legumes. The objective of this study was to characterize 11 RAZ lines of common bean, promising for their resistance to the Mexican bean weevil (Zabrotes subfasciatus Boh.). In October 2019, 11 RAZ lines from the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) were planted using a randomized complete block design at the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences (INCA), San José de las Lajas, Cuba. Twenty-two quantitative and qualitative traits of the common bean descriptors were used, and frequency analyses were performed for the qualitative traits and basic statistics and principal component analysis (PCA) were performed for the quantitative traits. The traits with greater variability were the primary seed color (5 different colors were reported, with dirty white being the most frequent); the predominant color of the pods at physiological maturity, (which presented 4 color variants, with green and yellow ones standing out); the opaque aspect of the coat stood out, being registered in 6 lines, as well as the absence of color around the hilum in 10 of them. All possible variants were found for the predominant appearance of the seed coat, predominant pro-file of the pod and presence of color around the hilum. Variables related to the biological cycle showed less variability. The weight of 100 grains corresponded to the small grains type. The average yield was 1 685 kg/ha, with the ‘RAZ 124’ line standing out with 4 237 kg/ha. The PCA explained 61.82 % of total variability and classified the 11 lines into four groups that characterize their performance. These results indicate that the lines under study can be incorporated into the vean breeding program in Cuba by means of their evaluation in different regional environments for the selection of possible new commercial cultivars.

Abstract Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis L.) is a crucial crop in Ecuador, considerably affected by black palm weevil Rhynchophorus palmarum L. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) for several years. Despite its importance, the behavior of the black weevil in Ecuador is not well comprehended presently. Therefore, this study aimed to predict infestation patterns of the black palm weevil in Ecuador using a mathematical model based on monitoring data. Data on the number of insects per trap from a commercial oil palm farm in Quinindé, Ecuador, was collected every two weeks for five years (2016-2020) and analyzed using the Classical Fourier (CF) spectrum and the Dickey-Fuller test to determine seasonality. The trend component of the data dropped from 16.33 in January 2017 to 11.96 in January 2019, with a fluctuation ranging from -0.11 to 2.50 observed for the entire data set. The results obtained after fitting the model ranged from -0.11 to 3.19, with a maximum of 5.30. The augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test for the black weevil time series yielded a result of -5.60 (P<0.01). The partial autocorrelation ranged from -0.35 to 0.1. Based on our model, we projected the occurrence of black palm weevil from 2021 to 2024, with a fluctuation in the number of insects per trap ranging from 12.68 in January 2021 to 13.023 in November 2023. This model can be used to predict future insect occurrences in Ecuador, providing valuable insights into the behavior of the black weevil and using it for effective development control measures for this pest.

Resumen Sitophilus granarius, es un pequeño insecto el cual bajo condiciones favorable llega a afectar al trigo almacenado hasta en un 85 %. Los esfuerzos investigativos están siendo orientados hacia el desarrollo de bioproductos a base de hongos o bacterias con acción entomopatógena, con utilidad potencial como bioinsecticidas. Estudios relacionados con Trichoderma harzianum y espinosina en el control del coleópteros-plaga de granos almacenados son mínimos y es en este contexto, el objetivo del presente trabajo consistió en evaluar el efecto de Trichoderma y la espinosina en el control de Sitophilus granarius en trigo almacenado. Para el desarrollo del estudio, el grano de todos los tratamientos fue impregnado primeramente con espinosina; tres concentraciones (tres tratamientos) de conidias de T. harzianum fueron asperjadas (T1:103, T2:106 y T3:109 conidias.mL-1), con cinco repeticiones cada tratamiento. En el estudio fueron considerados controles sin tratamientos. Los resultados muestran que, Trichoderma harzianum presenta un efecto biorregulador sobre S. granarius, el cual es significativo cuando se combina con la espinosina. Este efecto bioregulador se enfatiza cuando se inoculan concentraciones superiores de 109 condias/mL. Se deben realizar estudios relacionados con la coinoculación y el uso de la espinosina, asimismo, evaluar la viabilidad de la semilla y propiedades organolépticos del grano.

Abstract Sitophilus granarius, is a small insect which, under favorable conditions, affects up to 85 % of stored wheat. Research efforts are being directed towards the development of bioproducts based on fungi or bacteria with entomopathogenic action, with potential utility as bioinsecticides. Studies related to Trichoderma harzianum and spinosyn in the control of the beetle pest of stored grains are minimal and it is in this context, that the objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of Trichoderma and spinosyn in the control of Sitophilus granarius in stored wheat. For the development of the study, the grain of all treatments was first impregnated with spinosyn; three concentrations (three treatments) of T. harzianum conidia were sprayed (T1:103, T2:106 y T3:109 conidias.mL-1), with five repetitions for each treatment. In the study they were considered controls without treatments. The results show that Trichoderma harzianum has a bioregulatory effect on S. granarius, which is significant when combined with spinosyn. This bioregulatory effect is emphasized when higher concentrations than 109 condia/mL are inoculated. Studies related to coinoculation and the use of spinosyn should be carried out, as well as evaluating the viability of the seed and the organoleptic properties of the grain.
