RESUMO Objetivo verificar a ocorrência de sintomas visuais em sujeitos com tontura após Acidente Vascular Cerebral (AVC), comparar os resultados posturográficos e relacionar seus aspectos clínicos com as características do AVC. Método Trata-se de um estudo observacional, transversal, com análise quantitativa. Os critérios de inclusão para composição da amostra foi ter tontura após o AVC isquêmico ou hemorrágico e ter pelo menos 18 anos de idade. Foram avaliados 50 sujeitos por meio de anamnese clínica e os testes da Posturografia Dinâmica Foam Laser. Os desvios anteroposteriores foram calculados de acordo com as médias do Teste de Organização Sensorial. Resultados Vinte e oito sujeitos apresentaram sintomas visuais após o AVC. O desequilíbrio foi o tipo de tontura prevalente e o AVC isquêmico o mais comum, sobretudo no território carotídeo. Os resultados dos testes foram inferiores ao padrão de referência; houve relação com sujeitos mais velhos e o sistema proprioceptivo, e entre o sistema de preferência visual e a presença dos sintomas visuais, bem como com o AVC da circulação posterior. Conclusão Houve alta frequência de sintomas visuais entre os sujeitos com sequelas de AVC com relação significativa com piores valores da preferência visual.

ABSTRACT Purpose to verify the occurrence of visual symptoms in subjects with dizziness after stroke, to compare the posturographic results and to correlate their clinical aspects with the characteristics of the stroke. Methods This is an observational, cross-sectional study with quantitative analysis. The inclusion criteria for the sample composition were to report dizziness after ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke and at least 18 years old. We evaluated 50 patients through clinical anamnesis and Dynamic Foam-Laser Posturography. Anteroposterior deviations were calculated with the measures of each SOT. The preferences of the functions were analyzed according to the means of the Sensory Organization Test. Results twenty-eight subjects had stroke-related visual symptoms. The prevalent kind of dizziness was imbalance and the most frequent stroke was ischemic, mainly in the carotid territory. The values of tests were below the standard; there was a relationship between older subjects and proprioceptive system, and between visual preference and presence of visual symptoms, as well as the location of the posterior stroke. Conclusion there was a high frequency of visual symptoms among subjects with stroke sequelae and these have significant relationship with the worst values in visual preference system.

ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the impact of social distancing, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, on the perception and nuisance with chronic tinnitus and the relationship of the findings with anxiety and depression. Methods The sample was composed by convenience, including subjects aged 21 to 78 years. The evaluation was conducted in two periods: pre-distancing (late 2019) and during distancing (2020). The second evaluation was conducted online via Google Forms, consisting of the following procedures: Semistructured questionnaire, Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Results In the comparison of the results of the procedures performed pre-social distancing and during social-distancing, a statistically significant difference was evidenced for the THI and the BAI, but not for the BDI. In the correlation of the perception of chronic tinnitus with anxiety, a statistically significant difference was observed, positive and strong, but not significant with depression. Conclusion Social distancing, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, worsened the perception of and annoyance with chronic tinnitus and was correlated with an increase in anxiety symptoms.

RESUMO Objetivo analisar o impacto do distanciamento social devido à pandemia de COVID-19, sob a percepção e o incômodo com o zumbido crônico e a relação dos achados com a ansiedade e a depressão. Métodos a amostra foi composta por conveniência, incluindo sujeitos com idades de 21 a 78 anos. A avaliação foi realizada em dois períodos: pré-distanciamento (final de 2019) e durante o distanciamento (2020). A segunda avaliação foi realizada de forma online, via Google Forms, consistindo nos seguintes procedimentos: questionário semiestruturado, Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), Inventário de Ansiedade de Beck (BAI) e Inventário de Depressão de Beck (BDI). Resultados nas comparações dos procedimentos entre os períodos pré e pós-distanciamento social, foi evidenciada diferença estatisticamente significativa para o THI e o BAI, mas não para o BDI. Na correlação da percepção do zumbido crônico com a ansiedade, foi observada diferença estatisticamente significativa, positiva e forte, mas não significativa com a depressão. Conclusão o distanciamento social devido à pandemia de COVID-19 piorou a percepção e o incômodo com o zumbido crônico, estando correlacionado com aumento nos sintomas de ansiedade.

RESUMO Objetivo: verificar, na literatura, as propostas para reabilitar a função vestibular e propor um programa de treinamento do equilíbrio corporal para o público infantil. Metodos: buscou-se estudos propondo reabilitar/treinar o equilíbrio corporal nas bases de dados MEDLINE/PubMed e SCIELO, além das fontes digitais de universidades públicas brasileiras. Descritores utilizados: rehabilitation, balance e child, combinando-os com o operador boleano AND. Analisou-se as variáveis: público submetido à intervenção, número de sujeitos e faixa etária, número e periodicidade das sessões, número e/ou tempo de execução do exercício, duração da sessão e do programa. Resultados: 17 eram brasileiros, 14 utilizaram o protocolo de Cawthorne e Cooksey, nove estudaram crianças, a maioria organizou o programa em semanas. Elaborou-se um programa de treinamento do equilíbrio corporal que estimula os três sistemas do equilíbrio corporal, constituido por sessões de 30 minutos duas vezes por semana, durante 7 semanas, totalizando 14 sessões. Conclusão: a análise da variável relativa ao protocolo/estratégia para reabilitar a função vestibular indicou que nenhum estudo propôs a estimulação dos três sistemas do equilíbrio corporal, não havendo padronização para os públicos infantil, adulto e idoso. Elaborou-se um programa de reabilitação da função vestibular para crianças, com estimulação destes três sistemas, ampliando as possibilidades terapêuticas.

ABSTRACT Objective: to verify, in the literature, the proposals to rehabilitate the vestibular function, so as to propose a training program for body balance for children. Methods: this article sought studies that proposed to rehabilitate or train body balance in the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE/PubMed) and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO) databases, in addition to digital sources from Brazilian public universities. As descriptors, the terms “rehabilitation”, “balance” and “child” were used, combined with the Boolean operator AND. The variables analyzed were: public submitted to the intervention, number of subjects and age group, number and frequency of sessions, number and/or time of execution of the exercise, duration of the session and the program. Results: 17 (60.74%) articles were Brazilian, 14 (50%) used the Cawthorne and Cooksey protocol, 9 (32.14%) studied children, and the majority (67.85%) organized the program in weeks. A body balance training program, stimulating the three body balance systems, consisting of 30-minute sessions twice a week for 7 weeks, totaling 14 sessions, was developed. Conclusion: the analysis of the variable related to the protocol/strategy to rehabilitate the vestibular function indicated that no study proposed the stimulation of the three body balance systems, with no standardization for children, adults and the elderly. A vestibular function rehabilitation program was developed for children, with stimulation of these three systems, expanding the therapeutic possibilities in this area.

RESUMO Objetivo Analisar a Qualidade de Vida de sujeitos com afasia participantes de um Grupo Interdisciplinar de Convivência. Método estudo transversal e quantitativo. Os participantes foram submetidos a dois questionários: um semiestruturado, desenvolvido para a caracterização dos sujeitos e o outro o World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale – Bref (WHOQOL-Bref) para identificação da Qualidade de Vida (QV) dos mesmos. A análise dos dados foi realizada de modo descritivo. Resultados Foram entrevistados oito sujeitos com idade entre 35 e 78 anos e escolaridade variando entre Ensino Fundamental Incompleto e Superior Incompleto. A ocupação predominante na amostra foi a de balconista e a renda variou entre um e quatro salários mínimos. O tempo de lesão cerebral variou de três a 10 anos, causada predominantemente por Acidentes Vasculares Cerebrais decorrentes de Hipertensão Arterial Sistêmica. Quanto ao WHOQOL houve importante variação entre os sujeitos nos quatro domínios (físico, psicológico, social e ambiental). No entanto, a maioria pontuou acima de 70 pontos. Para todos os sujeitos, o Grupo de Convivência foi identificado como espaço de produção de vida e saúde sendo motivador para a busca de outros atendimentos. Conclusão Os sujeitos eram adultos e idosos pertencentes à classe econômica média baixa; apresentavam condições crônicas de saúde, comprometimento da expressão verbal e longo período de acompanhamento das necessidades de saúde. O WHOQOL-Bref revelou que cinco sujeitos perceberam suas condições de vida/saúde favoráveis, no entanto, destacaram convívio social reduzido. O Grupo de Convivência configurou-se como importante espaço para melhoria de QV.

ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the Quality of Life of subjects with aphasia participating in an Interdisciplinary Living Group. Methods cross-sectional and quantitative study. Convenience sample submitted to two questionnaires: a semi-structured one, developed exclusively for the characterization of the subjects and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale - Bref (WHOQOL-Bref) to identify their Quality of Life (QOL). Data analysis was descriptive. Results Eight subjects were interviewed, aged between 35 and 78 years and schooling between Incomplete Elementary School and Incomplete Higher Education. The predominant occupation was that of a clerk and the income varied between one and four minimum wages. The time of brain injury was from three to 10 years, caused predominantly by Stroke caused by Systemic Arterial Hypertension. As for WHOQOL, there was an important variation between the subjects in the four domains (physical, psychological, social and environmental). However, most scored above 70 points. For all subjects, the Living Group was identified as a space for the production of life and health, motivating them to seek other services. Conclusion The subjects were adults and elderly people belonging to the lower-middle class; presented chronic health conditions, impaired verbal expression and long monitoring time to their health needs. The WHOQOL-Bref revealed that five subjects perceived their favorable living/health conditions, however, they highlighted reduced social contact. The Living Group became an important space for improving QOL.

RESUMO Objetivo: analisar o equilíbrio postural de idosas independentes e sua relação com aspectos de saúde, faixa etária e qualidade de vida. Métodos: foram selecionadas 44 idosas independentes classificadas de acordo com as escalas: Index de Independência nas Atividades de Vida Diária (AVD) e das Atividades Instrumentais de Vida Diária (AIVD), com média de idade de 70,5 anos (+6,64), submetidas à anamnese, Posturografia Dinâmica Foam Laser, por meio do teste da organização sensorial (TOS) e analise sensorial, utilizada para avaliar as funções vestibular, proprioceptiva e visual; ao questionário Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) nos sujeitos com queixa de tontura e o questionário de qualidade de vida WHOQOL-Bref. Resultados: os testes apontaram diferença significativa entre as alterações na avaliação posturográfica e aspectos de saúde como queixa de tontura (p = 0,02), doenças metabólicas (p = 0,04), cardiovasculares (p = 0,02), dores na coluna (p = 0,02) e com o uso de medicação contínua (p = 0,03), autorrelatadas. As idosas mais velhas apresentaram pontuação inferior no domínio funcional do DHI (p = 0,02), demonstrando menor restrição de participação nas atividades de vida diária e, quanto maior a idade, melhor a qualidade de vida no domínio psicológico do WHOQOL-Bref (p = 0,04). Conclusão: a presença da tontura e das doenças sistêmicas impactou negativamente no equilíbrio postural e na qualidade de vida das idosas avaliadas.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to analyze the postural balance of independent elderly women and their relation with aspects of health, ages and quality of life. Methods: a total of 44 independent elderly women, classified according to the scales: Index of Independence in Daily Life Activities (DLA) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Life (IADL), aged 70.5 years (+6.64), submitted to the Foam-Laser Dynamic Posturography were used to evaluate the vestibular, proprioceptive and visual functions; the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) questionnaire on subjects with dizziness and the WHOQOL-Bref quality of life questionnaire. Results: the tests showed a significant difference between the changes in the posturographic evaluation and health aspects such as dizziness complaint (p = 0.02), metabolic diseases (p = 0.04), cardiovascular diseases (p = 0.02) and with the use of continuous medication (p = 0.03), self-reported. The older women presented lower scores in the functional domain of the DHI (p=0.02), showing a lower handicap in activities of daily living and the longer the quality of life in the WHOQOL-Bref psychological domain (p=0.04). Conclusion: the presence of dizziness and systemic diseases had a negative impact on postural balance and on the quality of life of the elderly women

RESUMO Alterações no equilíbrio postural são consequências frequentes no acidente vascular cerebral (AVC). O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar os sintomas e as funções vestibular e oculomotora de sujeitos com tontura após AVC isquêmico e hemorrágico, comparando seus resultados. Métodos: Foram avaliados 50 sujeitos com tontura após AVC, por meio de anamnese clínica e vectoeletronistagmografia computadorizada (VENG): calibração dos movimentos oculares; nistagmo espontâneo e semi-espontâneo; rastreio pendular; nistagmo optocinético; prova rotatória pendular decrescente e prova calórica com estímulo a ar. Resultados: Todos relataram tontura, principalmente do tipo desequilíbrio. O AVC isquêmico e no sistema carotídeo foi o mais frequente. Sintomas visuais pós-AVC foram referidos por 56% da amostra, os quais tiveram relação com alterações nas provas oculomotoras e calórica da VENG. Conclusão: A ocorrência de sintomas visuais relacionou-se a alterações em alguns testes. Essas alterações foram mais frequentes nos casos de AVC da circulação posterior, naqueles com oscilopsia e diminuição da acuidade visual.

ABSTRACT Changes in postural balance and visual complaints are frequent consequences of stroke. We aimed to investigate the symptoms and the vestibular and oculomotor functions of patients with dizziness post ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke and compare the results among them. Methods: Fifty patients with dizziness after stroke were evaluated through a clinical anamnesis and computerized vector electronystagmography: calibration of ocular movements, spontaneous nystagmus, semi-spontaneous nystagmus, pendular tracking, optokinetic nystagmus, rotary chair testing, and the caloric test. Results: All patients complained of dizziness, especially imbalance. Ischemic stroke in the carotid territory was the prevalent type. Visual complaints were reported by 56% of the sample and were related to abnormalities in oculomotor and caloric tests. Conclusion: The occurrence of visual symptoms was related to some abnormalities in the vector electronystagmography tests, being more frequent in cases of stroke in the vertebrobasilar system, and with oscillopsia and reduced visual acuity as symptoms.

RESUMO Objetivo analisar a ocorrência do diagnóstico psiquiátrico e o uso de psicotrópicos em sujeitos com queixas vestibulares e relacionar a presença dessas condições aos resultados da vestibulometria. Método estudo quantitativo, observacional, transversal, com 131 pacientes, atendidos em um hospital universitário. Foram submetidos à anamnese, inspeção visual do meato acústico externo, provas de equilíbrio estático e dinâmico, Posturografia dinâmica foam laser e vectoeletronistagmografia computadorizada. Resultados amostra composta por 109 mulheres e 22 homens, com média de idade de 55 anos e nove meses. O tipo de tontura mais frequente foi vertigem, com presença de sintomas neurovegetativos. Observou-se expressiva porcentagem de queixa/diagnóstico psiquiátrico, bem como uso de psicotrópicos, sendo principalmente inibidores seletivos da recaptação da serotonina, seguidos dos benzodiazepínicos. Houve relação entre a presença de condições psiquiátricas e mulheres, alterações do equilíbrio estático e alterações nas posições III e VI do Teste de Organização Sensorial. Na vectoeletronistagmografia, houve relação entre a idade e a presença de nistagmo espontâneo de olhos fechados. Conclusão Constatou-se alta ocorrência de condições psiquiátricas entre pacientes com tontura, com uso de psicotrópicos maior que na população geral. Destaca-se a associação entre ansiedade/depressão e alterações nas posições de sobrecarga visual da posturografia dinâmica foam laser. No entanto, não foi observada relação entre essas condições e alterações nas provas da vectoeletronistagmografia.

ABSTRACT Purpose to analyze the occurrence of psychiatric diagnosis and the use of psychotropics medications in subjects with vestibular complaints and to relate the presence of these conditions to the results of vestibulometry. Methods quantitative, observational, cross-sectional study with 131 patients, treated in a university hospital. They were submitted to anamnesis, visual inspection of the external ear canal, static and dynamic balance tests, Foam laser dynamic posturography and Computerized Vectoelectronystagmography. Results sample composed of 109 women and 22 men, with average age of 55 years and nine months. The most common type of dizziness was vertigo, with the presence of neurovegetative signals. A significant percentage of psychiatric complaint/diagnosis was observed, as well as the use of psychotropic medications, mainly serotonin uptake inhibitors, followed by benzodiazepines. There was a relation between the presence of psychiatric complaints with the female gender, alterations of the static balance and alterations in the Sensorial Organization Test positions III and VI. In the Vectoelectronystagmography, there was a relation between age and the presence of spontaneous nystagmus. Conclusion There was a high occurrence of psychiatric complaint/diagnosis among patients with dizziness, with use of psychotropic medications substantially greater than the general population. The evaluation of postural balance revealed an association between anxiety/depression and alterations visual overload positions in the foam laser dynamic posturography. However, no relationship was found between these conditions and alterations in the Vectoelectronystagmography tests.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a prevalência e os fatores associados ao prejuízo cognitivo em uma amostra de idosos residentes em instituições filantrópicas. Trata-se de um estudo transversal e descritivo, com 98 idosos institucionalizados. Os dados sociodemográficos e clínicos foram obtidos nos prontuários. A cognição foi avaliada através do: Mini Exame do Estado Mental, enquanto a manutenção de independência referente às atividades fundamentais (por exemplo: banhar-se, vestir-se, etc.) foi avaliada através do Índice de Katz. Por fim, avaliou-se o desempenho físico através da Short Physical Perfomance Batter. Para a análise estatística, testes não paramétricos foram utilizados. Houve 27,6% de idosos com déficit cognitivo. O prejuízo cognitivo não esteve associado às variáveis sociodemográficas, à independência referente, às atividades fundamentais, bem como ao desempenho físico. Verificou-se maior prevalência de doenças endócrinas, de transtornos mentais e de realização de tratamento psiquiátrico nos idosos com prejuízos cognitivos. A proporção de idosos com alterações cognitivas é semelhante à de outros estudos. Entre as variáveis avaliadas não foram identificados fatores de risco significativos associados à cognição.

Abstract The current transversal and descriptive study evaluates the prevalence and factors associated with cognitive liabilities in a sample of 98 elderly people residents of philanthropic institutions. The sociodemographic and clinical data were retrieved from the patients´ clinical charts. The cognition was assessed by the Mental State Mini-Exam, while the maintenance of independence regarding basic activities (such as bathing, putting on clothes, and others) was evaluated using the Katz Index. The Short Physical Performance Battery exam assessed their physical performance. Non-parametric tests were employed for the statistical analysis. Cognitive impairment was registered in 27.6% of the elderlies and was not associated with sociodemographic variables, independence in basic activities, and physical performance. We verified a high prevalence of endocrine diseases, mental disorders, and psychiatric treatment in the elderlies with cognitive impairments. The percentage of elderly with cognitive alterations is similar to those found in the literature. We identified no significant risk factors associated with cognition among the evaluated variables.

Resumo A qualidade de vida está sendo amplamente discutida na atualidade e em diversos cenários e, portanto, traz desafios para as políticas e as práticas da área da saúde. Um dos cenários possíveis de se explorar e analisar os aspectos que podem influenciar a qualidade de vida das pessoas é a educação superior. Nesse sentido, esta pesquisa tem o objetivo de comparar e refletir sobre a qualidade de vida de discentes do primeiro e do último ano de três cursos de saúde de uma Universidade Federal da região Sul do país. Trata-se de um estudo transversal de caráter descritivo, com abordagem quantitativa, no qual se aplicou o WHOQOL-bref, um instrumento desenvolvido pela Organização Mundial da Saúde para avaliar, em modelo abreviado, a qualidade de vida. A amostra do estudo foi constituída por 119 sujeitos, graduandos em Terapia Ocupacional, Fonoaudiologia e Fisioterapia. O período de coleta de dados foi de abril a junho de 2017 e para o tratamento das informações se utilizou o Software Statistica 9.1, considerando-se um nível de significância de 5% (p < 0,05). Os resultados da pesquisa demonstraram diminuição, embora não haja diferença significativa, na qualidade de vida dos ingressantes do primeiro ano dos três cursos, quando comparados aos estudantes do último; o que pode ser justificado pelo impacto e pelas transições que o ingresso à universidade produz. Desse modo, é necessário que o universitário possa dispor de uma rede de suporte e atenção, que garanta adequada formação profissional e promoção de sua saúde, potencializando a qualidade de vida.

Abstract Quality of life is being widely discussed in the current scenario, and presents challenges for health policies and practices. One of the possible scenarios for exploring and analyzing aspects that can influence people’s quality of life is undergraduate education. In this context, this research aims to compare and reflect on the quality of life of freshman and senior students of three courses of a Federal University in the southern region of Brazil. It is a descriptive, cross-sectional study that follows a quantitative approach in which the WHOQOL-bref, an instrument developed by the World Health Organization, was used to evaluate quality of life in an abbreviated model. The study sample was composed of 119 individuals from undergraduate programs of the health area. Data was collected from April to June 2017 and processed using the Statistica 9.1 software at a significance level of 5% (p<0.05). Results demonstrated a decrease, although without significant statistical difference, in the quality of life of the freshman students compared with that of the senior students, which can be justified by the impact and transitions that university admission produces. Thus, it is necessary that undergraduate students have access to a network of support and care that could provide them with adequate professional training and reduced health risks, enhancing their quality of life.

RESUMO Objetivo Avaliar a via auditiva em nível de tronco encefálico e cortical em indivíduos com disfunção vestibular periférica. Método Participaram do estudo 19 indivíduos, com idade entre 20 e 80 anos que possuíam exames vestibulares sugestivos de Disfunção Vestibular Periférica Deficitária (DVPD) ou Disfunção Vestibular (DV). Os participantes realizaram avaliação da via auditiva por meio dos Potenciais Evocados Auditivos de Tronco Encefálico (curta latência) e dos potenciais P1, N1, P2, N2 e P300 (longa latência). Resultados Nove indivíduos apresentaram diagnóstico de Disfunção Vestibular e 10 de Disfunção Vestibular Periférica Deficitária. A média geral dos potenciais de longa latência dos participantes ficou dentro da normalidade e no de curta latência houve uma média aumentada na latência das ondas III e V da orelha esquerda, bem como no intervalo interpico I-III de ambas as orelhas. Ao relacionar os potenciais auditivos com DV e DVPD, houve significância estatística apenas no intervalo interpico III-V no potencial de curta latência da orelha direita. Ao comparar longa e curta latência nos grupos, houve diferenças nas latências entre DV e DVPD, sem significância estatística. Conclusão Não houve relação significativa de DV e DVPD com os potenciais auditivos, porém, nos potenciais de longa latência, os indivíduos com Disfunção Vestibular apresentaram maior latência em P1, N1, P2, N2 e os indivíduos com Disfunção Vestibular Periférica Deficitária, maior latência no P300. No potencial de curta latência, houve um aumento nas latências absolutas no grupo Disfunção Vestibular e nos intervalos interpicos em Disfunção Vestibular Periférica Deficitária.

ABSTRACT Purpose Evaluate the auditory pathway at the brainstem and cortical levels in individuals with peripheral vestibular dysfunction. Methods The study sample was composed 19 individuals aged 20-80 years that presented exam results suggestive of Peripheral Vestibular Disorder (PVD) or Vestibular Dysfunction (VD). Participants underwent evaluation of the auditory pathway through Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials (BAEP) (short latency) and P1, N1, P2, N2, and P300 cortical potentials (long latency). Results Nine individuals presented diagnosis of VD and 10 participants were diagnosed with PVD. The overall average of the long latency potentials of the participants was within the normal range, whereas an increased mean was observed in the short latency of waves III and V of the left ear, as well as in the I – III interpeak interval of both ears. Association of the auditory potentials with VD and PVD showed statistically significant correlation only in the III – V interpeak interval of the right ear for short latency. Comparison between the long and short latencies in the groups showed differences between VD and PVD, but without statistical significance. Conclusion No statistically significant correlation was observed between VD/PVD and the auditory evoked potentials; however, for the long latency potentials, individuals with VD presented higher latency in P1, N1, P2, and N2, where as participants with PVD showed higher latency in P300. In the short latency potentials, there was an increase in the absolute latencies in the VD group and in the interpeak intervals in the PVD group.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a prevalência e os fatores associados ao prejuízo cognitivo em uma amostra de idosos residentes em instituições filantrópicas. Trata-se de um estudo transversal e descritivo, com 98 idosos institucionalizados. Os dados sociodemográficos e clínicos foram obtidos nos prontuários. A cognição foi avaliada através do: Mini Exame do Estado Mental, enquanto a manutenção de independência referente às atividades fundamentais (por exemplo: banhar-se, vestir-se, etc.) foi avaliada através do Índice de Katz. Por fim, avaliou-se o desempenho físico através da Short Physical Perfomance Batter. Para a análise estatística, testes não paramétricos foram utilizados. Houve 27,6% de idosos com déficit cognitivo. O prejuízo cognitivo não esteve associado às variáveis sociodemográficas, à independência referente, às atividades fundamentais, bem como ao desempenho físico. Verificou-se maior prevalência de doenças endócrinas, de transtornos mentais e de realização de tratamento psiquiátrico nos idosos com prejuízos cognitivos. A proporção de idosos com alterações cognitivas é semelhante à de outros estudos. Entre as variáveis avaliadas não foram identificados fatores de risco significativos associados à cognição.

Abstract The current transversal and descriptive study evaluates the prevalence and factors associated with cognitive liabilities in a sample of 98 elderly people residents of philanthropic institutions. The sociodemographic and clinical data were retrieved from the patients´ clinical charts. The cognition was assessed by the Mental State Mini-Exam, while the maintenance of independence regarding basic activities (such as bathing, putting on clothes, and others) was evaluated using the Katz Index. The Short Physical Performance Battery exam assessed their physical performance. Non-parametric tests were employed for the statistical analysis. Cognitive impairment was registered in 27.6% of the elderlies and was not associated with sociodemographic variables, independence in basic activities, and physical performance. We verified a high prevalence of endocrine diseases, mental disorders, and psychiatric treatment in the elderlies with cognitive impairments. The percentage of elderly with cognitive alterations is similar to those found in the literature. We identified no significant risk factors associated with cognition among the evaluated variables.

RESUMO Estudo retrospectivo, transversal e descritivo, aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa (CEP), sob o número CAAE 16728013.0.0000.5346. Trata-se de uma série de casos que tem por objetivo investigar a presença de sintomas otoneurológicos e o equilíbrio postural de seis pacientes com tontura após traumatismo cranioencefálico (TCE). Foram submetidos a uma anamnese clínica e a avaliações: teste de organização sensorial por meio da posturografia dinâmica foam laser e provas oculomotoras e vestibulares da vectoeletronistagmografia computadorizada (VENG). Os dados foram analisados a partir dos valores de referência para cada avaliação. Na posturografia, observou-se que as maiores diferenças entre o valor obtido e o valor de referência foram nas posições VI, V e III, respectivamente. A análise sensorial indicou alteração, principalmente, nos sistemas de preferência visual e vestibular. Todos os pacientes avaliados apresentaram ao menos uma alteração nas provas da VENG. Cinco pacientes tiveram alteração na prova calórica e nenhum apresentou alteração na prova rotatória pendular decrescente, que avalia a compensação vestibular. Além das queixas vestibulares, quatro pacientes estavam em tratamento com psicotrópicos para depressão. Tais resultados ratificam a presença de alterações vestíbulo-oculares no pós-TCE, os quais devem receber atenção especial devido ao comprometimento central associado.

ABSTRACT It is a retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive, approved by Ethics Research Committee (ERC), under number CAAE 16728013.0.0000.5346. This is a series of cases that aims to investigate the presence of otoneurological symptoms and the postural balance of six patients with dizziness after Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Participants were submitted to a clinical anamnesis and the evaluations: Sensory Organization Test through Foam Laser Dynamic Posturography and oculomotor and vestibular tests of Computerized Vectoelectronystamography (VENG). The data were analyzed from the reference values for each evaluation. In posturography, it was observed that the greatest differences between the value obtained and the reference value were in positions VI, V and III, respectively. Sensory analysis indicated alteration mainly in the visual and vestibular preference systems. All the evaluated patients presented at least one alteration in the VENG tests. Five patients had alterations in the caloric test, and none presented alterations to the rotatory chair test (RCT), which evaluates the vestibular compensation. Considering vestibular complaints, four patients were on psychotropic treatment for depression. These results demonstrate the presence of vestibulo-ocular alterations in post-TBI, which should receive special attention due to associated central impairment.

Abstract Introduction The manipulation of antineoplastic drugs presents high risk for accidents and occupational diseases. Objective To evaluate the auditory and vestibular systems of workers who are exposed to chemotherapeutic treatment in the University Hospital of Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, Brazil, and to identify the use of individual protection equipment, related to the obtained results. Methods This study is a cross-sectional study using a quantitative method. We evaluate 33 male and female workers, ranging from 21-60 years old, of the nursing and pharmacy sectors. The workers underwent conventional Audiologic Assessment; Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions; and Computerized Vectoelectronystagmography. Results The majority of the sample was female (90.9%). Individual protection equipment was used by 90.9% of the workers. Complaints of dizziness were reported by 56.25% of nursing workers and 52.94% of pharmacy workers. Audiological and vestibular assessment results were within normal limits, 96.97% and 74.20%, respectively. However, audiometric configuration of notch type was identified in 75.75% of all workers. Audiometric notches (76%) and altered caloric test (100%) were often associated with decreased use of coal masks. Conclusion Among the workers evaluated, the vestibulocochlear system was within the normal limits. The presence of notch configuration indicates the need to use individual protection equipment.

RESUMO Objetivo: investigar o efeito supressor das emissões otoacústicas por estímulos transientes em indivíduos com queixa zumbido e audiometria normal e analisar sua relação com as variáveis idade, sexo, lateralidade do zumbido e grau de incômodo. Métodos: foram avaliados 60 sujeitos, 14 do gênero masculino e 46 do gênero feminino, entre 20 e 59 anos de idade, sendo 30 com queixa de zumbido (grupo experimental) e 30 sem zumbido (grupo controle). Foi realizada a pesquisa da supressão das emissões otoacústicas por estímulos transientes, para ruído branco de 50 dBNA, na condição contralateral nas bandas de frequência de 700, 1000, 1400, 2000, 2800 and 4000Hz. Resultado: no grupo experimental, a supressão das emissões otoacústicas transientes média variou de 2,14 a 4,38. No grupo controle o valor médio da supressão das emissões otoacústicas transientes variou de 2,27 a 4,88. Conclusão: os valores de supressão das emissões otoacústicas foram semelhantes nos indivíduos com e sem zumbido, embora o grupo com o sintoma tenha tido resultados menores, sugerindo pior desempenho do Complexo Olivar Superior.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to investigate the suppressive effect of transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions in subjects with tinnitus complaint and normal audiometry and to analyze the relation to age, gender, laterality of tinnitus and its degree of discomfort. Methods: we assessed 60 subjects, 14 males and 46 females, aged between 20 and 59 years, 30 with tinnitus (experimental group) and 30 without tinnitus complaint (control group). The suppression of transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions was investigated with contralateral white noise at 50 dBHL at the frequency bands of 700, 1000, 1400, 2000, 2800 and 4000Hz. Results: the mean value for the suppression of transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions in the experimental group ranged from 2.14 to 4.38. In the control group, the mean value for suppression of transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions ranged from 2.27 to 4.88. Conclusion: suppression values of otoacoustic emissions were similar in subjects with and without tinnitus, although the results of the tinnitus group were lower, suggesting worse performance of the Superior Olivary Complex.
