Com o intuito de determinar as características sedimentológicas e físico-químicas do ambiente bentônico e também o nível, distribuição e prováveis fontes dos hidrocarbonetos alifáticos e policíclicos aromáticos, foram coletadas amostras de sedimento em 28 estações localizadas na porção nordeste da Baía de Todos os Santos. A região central e leste da área de estudo apresentaram características de ambientes deposicionais com predomínio de silte e argila e com maiores teores de carbono orgânico total, nitrogênio e enxofre. As razões C/N variaram entre 8,8 e 27,6 indicando uma origem mista da matéria orgânica com contribuições marinha e continental relativamente variáveis. As concentrações de hidrocarbonetos alifáticos totais variaram entre 1,56 e 246,91 µg.g-1 de sedimento seco, correspondendo as maiores concentrações às estações localizadas na região central e leste da área de estudo. A Mistura Complexa não Resolvida (UCM) representou entre 60 e 90% dos hidrocarbonetos alifáticos totais, indicando um alto grau de contribuição antrópica e a presença de resíduos de petróleo degradado. As concentrações de hidrocarbonetos policíclicos aromáticos totais variaram de 8 a 4163 ng.g-1 de sedimento seco. A maior concentração de hidrocarbonetos policíclicos aromáticos foi registrada na estação 5 situada na área adjacente à refinaria de petróleo.

In order to determine the sedimentological and physico-chemical characteristics of the benthic environment and also the level, distribution and probable sources of aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, sediment samples were collected at 28 stations in the northeast portion of Todos os Santos Bay. The centre and the east region of the study area showed characteristics of depositional environments with the predominance of silt and clay and high percentages of TOC, nitrogen and sulphur. The molar C/N ratios varied between 8.8 and 27.6 indicating a mixed origin of organic matter with variable marine and continental contributions. Total aliphatic hydrocarbon concentrations ranged between 1.56 and 246.91 µg.g-1 dry weight, corresponding the high concentrations to the stations situated in the centre and in the east region of the study area. The UCM represented between 60 and 96% of the total aliphatic hydrocarbons, indicating a high degree of anthropogenic contribution and the presence of petroleum degraded residues. Total PAH concentrations varied from 8 to 4163 ng.g-1 dry weight. The highest total PAH concentration was recorded at station 5 situated adjacent to the oil refinery.

The present study aimed to evaluate the seasonal variation of microphytobenthic biomass and its primary production in the intertidal zone in Santos Estuary (São Paulo, Brazil). This estuary is on the tropical region and it is regarded as a polluted area. The samples were collected at 3 sites, and environmental parameters, nutrients and heavy metals were analyzed. The primary production was evaluated according to GRφNTVED (1960) method whereas chlorophyll a and phaeopigment a were estimated by TETT et al. (1975) method. Total nitrogen K ranged from 20.0 to 115.0 µg·g-1 while total phosphate ranged from 26.0 to 223.0 µg·g-1. No significant seasonal variation of benthic primary production or chlorophyll a and phaeopigment a were observed. Significant positive correlation was found for microbenthic primary production and chlorophyll a. Primary production showed lower correlations whit nitrate, total nitrogen K, total phosphate and organic matter in the sediment. The values of phaeopigment a were higher than chlorophyll a. The means for chlorophyll a were 10.4 µg·m-2 , 14.9 µg·m-2, 28.6 µg·m-2, 39.7 µg·m-2 and 26.7 µg·m-2. The mean values for primary production were 40.7 mgC·m-2.h-1 (summer); 51.3 mgC·m-2·h-1 (autumn); 84.3 mgC·m-2·h-1 (winter); 140.0 mgC·m-2·h-1 (spring) and 60.8 mgC·m-2·h-1 (summer).

O Stomatopoda Squilla brasiliensis ocorreu em 60 estações na plataforma continental do Rio Grande do Sul. É aparentemente, bastante freqüente entre 19 e 285 m de profundidade, mas especialmente entre 100 e 150 m, temperatura da água de fundo de 12,22 a 24,45ºC, salinidade de 30,20 a 36,16º/.., fundo de areia fina e lodo com baixo teor de calcario (0-20%) na fração menor do que 44µ. Ocorreu especialmente em fundos sob influencia da massa de água Subtropical. As maiores abundancias ocorreram entre 30º e 31ºS e entre 49º e 50ºW. Vários exemplares, tanto machos como fêmeas, apresentaram telso com bordos entumescidos, o que sugere não ser essa uma característica ligada ao sexo nesta espécie .

The distribution of Squilla brasiliensis Caiman, 1917 (Crustacea Stomatopoda) is by the first time discussed in the continental plataform in the region of Rio Grande do Sul State, in relationship with depth, temperature and salinity. Apparently the distribution of that species is more related to salinity than to depth and temperature, and specially to the water mass of Subtropical origin. The largest densities were found between 84 and 128 m depth.

Levels of 0.123 0.60 and 2.20 of total DDT were found in three out of ten water samples of Santos Bay and estuarine region of Santos and São Vieente (SP).

São apresentados os resultados de bioensaios com larvas de Artemia salinacolocadas em misturas de γBHC e HgCl2, a fim de se compararem os efeitos das mesmas com aqueles obtidos quando essas duas substancias atuam isoladamente. A CL50 para o yBHC foi quase que o dobro do valor para o HgCl2. O efeito da primeira dose foi observado para aproximadamente 16% da população (CL16), enquanto que, para o γBHC, o foi em 2,3% da população (CL2,3). Assim, as doses subseqüentes foram mais efetivas para o HgCl2 que para o γBHC. A dose efetiva 50% (ED50) ê mais ou menos igual para o γBHC e para o γBHC + HgCl2, mas em doses altas o YBHC seria mais efetivo, enquanto que em doses baixas a mistura é que o seria.

Results of bio-assays using Artemia salina larvae in γBHC-HgCl2 mixture are presented. The results obtained are compared with those obtained using the two chemicals separately. The LC50 for γBHC was almost double that for HgCl2. The effect due to the primary dose of HgCl2 was observed for approximately 16% of the population (LC2.3) while for γBHC the population percentage was 2.3 (LC2.3). As a consequence, subsequent doses were more effective for HgCl2 than for γBHC. The effective dose 50% (ED50) is about the same for γBHC and for γBHC + HgCl2 mixture, though in higher doses BHC would be more effective, while in smaller doses the mixture would predominate.

É estudada a distribuição geográfica e a variação de caracteres morfológicos de três espécies de ofiuroides (OpiLacantha antartica, Astrotoma agassizzi e Gorgonecephalus chilensis) das regiões Antártica e Subantãrtica. São também apresentadas observações sobre biologia reprodutiva.

The geographical distribution and the variation of morphological characters of three (Gorgonecephalus chilensis, Astroma agassizii, Ophiacantha antartica) from the Antarctic and Subantarctic regions are studied. Observations on reproductive biology are presented.

Uma série de experimentos foi realizada com o objetivo de estabelecer a CL50 para o molusco gastropode Neritina virginica em relação ao hexaclorociclohexano conhecido, comercialmente, como BHC (Europa) e HC (EUA). As concentrações usadas de BHC variaram entre os limites de 1,120 a 2,000 mg/l e os experimentos tiveram a duração de 96 horas. O valor obtido de CL50 96 horas para Neritina virginicafoi de 1,482 mgBHC/l.

The LC50 of Neritina virginica (gastropod) to hexaolorocyclohexane (C6H6Cl6) was determined. A series of experiments was prepared during a period of 96 hours using different hexaclorocyclohexane concentrations. The LC50 to Neritina virginica was 1,482 mg hexaclorocyclohexane/l.

Foram examinados 198 exemplares de Gorgonocephalus chilensis das regiões antártica e subantartica, tendo-se em vista a variação de caracteres morfológicos externos. Foi constatada uma grande variação nas características morfológicas externas, que parece independer de localização geográfica.

A revision is presented on the variability of the ornamentation and other extermal morphological aspects of Gorgonocephalus chilensis. The samples were obtained along the period of 1962 to 1972 by the R/V "Hero" and "Eltanin" (USARP) and by the R/V "Almirante Saldanha" from the Brazilian Navy.

Os maiores níveis de detergentes foram obtidos no interior do Canal de Santos, em frente ao Canal 6 e na região do difusor do emissãrio submarino de esgostos de Santos. Há, assim, três fontes principais de detergentes para a região: a) o complexo industrial de Cubatao - Sistema Billings; b) a cidade de Santos (ligações clandestinas de esgotos), e c) o emissário submarino. Os níveis de detergentes obtidos variaram de 0,11 a 0,97 ppm ABS.

The highest level of detergents was obtained in the interior of the Santos Channely in front of Channel 6 and also in the vicinity of the Santos ocean outfall diffusor. There are thus three principal soucers of detergents in this region: a. the Cubatão industrial complex, and the Billings reservoir; b. the city of Santos (unauthorized sewage connections); c. the ocean outfall. Detergent levels obtained vary between 0.11 and 0.97 ppm ABS.

The Asteroidea collected during the cruises of the R/V "Prof. W. Besnard" along the coast of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) from April 1968 to January 1972 were studied. Twenty-four species are reported from the continental shelf for the area between Torres (29ºS) and Chui (34ºS). Labidiaster radiosus Lutken, Luidia clathrata (Say), Marginaster pectinatus Perrier, Mediaster trindadensis Bernasconi, Sclerasterias subangulosa (Verrill) and Tosia parva (Perrier) are new records for the area; Luidia barbadensis Perrier and L. elegans Perrier are new records for Brazil and Pectinidiscus aliciae sp. n. constitutes the first record of the genus from the Americas and is compared with the other two known species of the genus: P. annae and P. sibogae. Ecological data and the geographic distribution for each species are given. Keys for identification are provided. The general hydrology of the area and the biogeography are discussed and correlations of asteroid abundance with two commercially important fish species are made.

1 - La hidrología del área estudiada, entre las latitudes 29º y 34ºS, es muy compleja y esta influenciada por aguas tropicales traídas por la Corriente de Brasil, por aguas subantarticas traídas por la Corriente de las Malvinas, por las aguas del estuario del Rio de La Plata y por la presencia cercana de la Convergencia Subtropical. 2 - Las aguas que cubren la plataforma continental del Estado de Rio Grande do Sul pueden clasificarse como Aguas Costeras de Influencia Tropical (ACIT), Aguas del Talud Continental (AT) y Aguas Costeras de Influencia Subantártica (ACISA) originadas casi exclusivamente por procesos de mezcla. 3 - En otoño e invierno es mayor la influencia de las ACISA, AT y las aguas del estuario del Rio de La Plata sobretodo en la región septentrional del área estudiada; ocurren inversiones de temperatura y predominan los procesos de mezcla sobre los de interacción océano-aire. 4 - En primavera y verano es mayor la influencia de las ACIT; predominan los procesos de interacción océano-aire sobre los de mezcla y se encuentra evidencia sugiriendo la ocurrencia de resurgencias en varios puntos. 5 - Los procesos hidrográficos del área estudiada varían estacionalmente y ademas anualmente según las condiciones meteorológicas reinantes. 6 - La fauna de Asteroidea de Rio Grande do Sul comprende cinco ordenes, nueve familias, 15 géneros y 24 especies. 7 - El área estudiada tiene una fauna de asteroideos principalmente tropical y subtropical pero incluye elementos subantárticos y antárticos. Los primeros se encuentran sobretodo al norte del paralelo de 31ºS mientras que los segundos ocurren principalmente al sur de ese paralelo. Constituye esto evidencia adicional a la hipótesis de que el área estudiada comprende dos regiones hidrográficas con su división aproximada en el paralelo 31ºS. 8 - Se reportan ocho nuevas ocurrencias: Labidiaster radiosus Lutken, Luidla clathrata (Say), Marginaster pectinatus Perrier, Mediaster trindadensis Bernasconi, Sclerasterias subangülosa (Verrill) y Tosia parva (Perrier) siendo nuevas ocurrencias para el área de estudio y Luidla barbadensis Perrier y L. elegans Perrier siendo nuevas ocurrencias para Brasil. 9 - El género Pectinidiscus Ludwig se reporta por la primera vez para las Américas y se describe una nueva especie: Pectinidiscus aliciae. Se compara con las otras dos especies conocidas del género, P. annae y P. sibogae.

The occurrence of Tosia parva (Perrier, 1881), Marginaster pectinatus Perrier, 1884 and Ldbidiaster radiosus Liltken, 1871 in the South Atlantic region is registered for the first time. The new varieties, Phrixometra longispina brasiliensis var. n., and Holothuria (Vaneyothuria) lentiginosa brasiliensis var. n., are de scribed. The genus Calliophidiaster Tommasi, 1970 is redescribed and its differences with Linckia Nardo, 1934, are reinforced. Ophiomyxa vivipara Studer, 1886 and Ophiura fallax Cherbonnier, 1959 are de scribed for the first time from Brazil. Amphiura iraciae sp. n. and A. rosae sp. n. are described.
