Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate and financially compare the forest management system in alternates bands (MAB) and the selective management system (SS). The study was carried out at the MAGELA Project, located in the municipality of Codó, state of Maranhão, Brazil. The data was collected in six permanent plots of 50 x 200 m, located in the Annual Production Units (APU) nº 01 and 02. In the financial analysis, the net present value was used for infinite horizon (NPV), land expected value (LEV), equivalent annual value (EAV), benefit/cost ratio (BCR), internal rate of return (IRR), average production cost (APC) and an annual discount rate of 9.0%. The MAB system was more financially viable for annual discount rates below 9.9%. However, at annual discount rates equal to or greater than 12%, the SS system was economically viable.

Resumen El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar y comparar financieramente el sistema de manejo forestal en bandas alternas (MAB) y el sistema de manejo selectivo (SS). El estudio se realizó en el Proyecto MAGELA, ubicado en el municipio de Codó, estado de Maranhão, Brasil. Recolectamos los datos en seis parcelas permanentes de 50 x 200 m, ubicadas en las Unidades de Producción Anual (APU) nº 01 y 02. En el análisis financiero, usamos el valor presente neto para horizonte infinito (VPN ), valor esperado del terreno ( LEV), valor anual equivalente (EAV), relación beneficio / costo (BCR), tasa interna de retorno (TIR), costo promedio de producción (APC) y una tasa de descuento anual del 9.0%. El sistema MAB era más viable financieramente para tipos de descuento anuales inferiores al 9,9%. Sin embargo, a tasas de descuento anuales iguales o superiores al 12%, el sistema de SS era económicamente viable.

Resumo O presente trabalho analisou as estruturas horizontal, vertical, interna e paramétrica de uma Floresta Ombrófila Densa Montana, com dominância da espécie Euterpe edulis Mart. Foram inventariadas, aleatoriamente, 20 parcelas de 10 m x 50 m, totalizando 1,0 ha de área amostral. O critério de inclusão foi o diâmetro do tronco, medido a 1,30 m do solo (DAP) igual ou superior a 5,0 cm, que resultou em 2.394 indivíduos.ha-1, 2.594 fustes.ha-1, dominância total de 42,20 m2.ha-1, sendo que 7,81 m2.ha-1 corresponderam a 642 indivíduos.ha-1 de Euterpe edulis. Os diâmetros médios foram de 12,33 cm e de 11,48 cm para a comunidade e para a população de Euterpe edulis, respectivamente. No estrato médio da floresta, definido entre 5 a 12 metros de altura total, encontram-se 65% dos indivíduos de Euterpe edulis. A estrutura diamétrica da comunidade florestal apresentou distribuição em forma de "J-invertido", mas desbalanceada. No tocante à estrutura interna, 96,4% dos indivíduos apresentaram epífitas, 57,8% com ausência de trepadeiras e 62,5% dos indivíduos com ausência de cipós. Essas características, associadas ao efeito edafoclimático da área de estudo e à ausência do fenômeno de caducifoliedade, permitiram classificar o fragmento em Floresta Ombrófila Densa Montana em estágio médio avançado de regeneração. Quanto à população de Euterpe edulis, a representação da espécie pela área basal demonstrou sua dominância na comunidade florestal, sendo observada uma população madura, apesar da subestimação dos indivíduos adultos.

Abstract The current article analyzed the horizontal, vertical, internal and parametric structures of a Dense Montana Ombrophilous Forest with a dominance of Euterpe edulis Mart. species. Twenty (20) sections of 10 x 50 m were inventoried contingently, totaling 1.0 ha of sampling area. The criteria for inclusion was the diameter at the breast height, measured 1.30 m above ground level (DBH), equal or greater than 5.0 cm, which resulted in 2,394 indiviuals.ha-1; 2,594 boles.ha-1, total dominance of 42.20 m2.ha-1, wherein 7.81 m2.ha-1 corresponded to 642 individuals.ha-1 of Euterpe edulis. The average diameters were 12.33 cm and 11.48 cm for the community and the population of Euterpe edulis, respectively. The medium extract of the forest, defined at a height of 5 to 12 m total size revealed 65% Euterpe edulis individuals. The diametric structure of the forest community showed distribution in the form of “inverted-J”, but unbalanced. As for the internal structure, 96.4% of the individuals showed epiphytes, 57.8% without creepers, and 62.5% of individuals without lianas. These characteristics associated to the edaphoclimatic effect of the studied area and absence of a deciduousness phenomenon, permitted classifying the fragment as Dense Montana Ombrophilous Forest in an intermediated-advanced stage of regeneration. As for the Euterpe edulis population, the species representation by the basal area demonstrated its dominance in the forest community, showing a mature population in spite of underestimated adult individuals.

RESUMO As florestas da costa atlântica brasileira são pouco estudadas quanto às quantidades e à dinâmica de nutrientes. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram estimar os teores e conteúdos de carbono orgânico, Ca, Mg, K, Na, P e N no solo e na serapilheira dos ambientes de encosta e fundos de vale do Parque Nacional da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, RJ. Os processos de ciclagem de nutrientes nas encostas (ambientes mais oligotróficos) e dos fundos de vale (ambientes menos oligotróficos) também foram comparados. Foram estabelecidas 15 parcelas de amostragem, cada uma com 100 m², 10 em encostas (vertentes do Conde, das Cobras e da Tijuca), e cinco em fundos de vale (fundos de vale 1 e 2). O compartimento solo (nutrientes trocáveis/disponíveis e totais até a profundidade de 0,30 m) e o compartimento serapilheira (separada em horizontes O1 e O2) foram avaliados. O teor de carbono orgânico total no solo das encostas foi maior que o nos fundos de vale. Nas encostas, a serapilheira também apresentou maior biomassa, com separação nítida dos horizontes O1 e O2, o que não ocorreu nos fundos de vale. Aparentemente, a disponibilidade de nutrientes nos dois ambientes foi o que gerou tais diferenças, com a tendência de aumento nos teores no solo nos fundos de vale. Diferenças entre fundos de vale e encostas foram mais evidentes para o K. Os resultados deste estudo caracterizaram a área estudada como oligotrófica, embora com considerável potencial de reposição dos elementos perdidos por lixiviação.

ABSTRACT The forests of Brazilian Atlantic coast are poorly studied in terms of nutrient pools and dynamics. The purpose of this study was to determine the amounts and contents of organic carbon and Ca, Mg, K, Na, P, and N in the soil and the litter layer on slopes and in valley bottoms in Tijuca National Park, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The nutrient cycling process on slopes (more oligotrophic environments) and valley bottoms (less oligotrophic environments) was also compared. Samples were collected from 15 plots (100 m² each), 10 on slopes (Conde, Cobras and Tijuca) and five in valley bottoms (Valley bottom 1 and 2). The soil compartment (exchangeable/available and total nutrient contents to a depth of 0.30 m) and litter compartment (O1 and O2 horizons) were evaluated. The total organic carbon content in the soil and litter biomass on slopes were higher than in the valley bottoms. On slopes, there was a clear separation of horizons O1 and O2 in the litter layer, unlike the valley bottoms, probably due to a higher nutrient content in these positions. The difference in nutrient availability was most evident for K. These results characterize the study area as oligotrophic, although it has considerable potential for replacement of nutrients lost by leaching.

Resumo A Floresta Nacional (FLONA) do Purus, situada no município de Pauiní-AM, apresenta elevado estado de conservação e uma população de aproximadamente mil habitantes. No entanto, a carência de estudos ambientais em escala adequada para o planejamento da gestão da FLONA torna imprescindíveis levantamentos que quantifiquem e qualifiquem o estoque de recursos, identifiquem a demanda comunitária e fundamentem técnicas de produção florestal sustentável. Nesse sentido, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi analisar a composição florística, a estrutura florestal e o potencial de manejo florestal de um trecho de floresta ombrófila densa de terra firme, localizado na Unidade de Manejo Florestal-1 (UMF-1) da Vila Céu do Mapiá, maior núcleo populacional da FLONA. Para tanto, foi realizado um inventário florestal por amostragem aleatória de 12 parcelas de 50x50m, sendo mensurados todos os indivíduos com DAP ≥ 10 cm. Foi realizada a análise da composição florística, bem como utilizados os índices de diversidade Shannon-Wienere de equabilidade de Pielou, para avaliar a diversidade e uniformidade da comunidade. A análise da estrutura da floresta foi baseada nos valores absolutos e relativos de densidade, dominância, frequência, valor de importância e distribuição diamétrica, da área basal e estimativas volumétricas do povoamento. Foram registrados 1.764 indivíduos, pertencentes a 35 famílias botânicas, 91 gêneros, e 163 possíveis espécimes, ressaltando que menos de 40% (65) foram identificadas em nível de espécie. A UMF-1 caracteriza-se pela alta diversidade florística acumulada da comunidade arbórea amostral (H’= 4,10), poucas espécies dominantes (J = 0,81) e muitas espécies de baixa abundância. Das espécies comerciais utilizadas na comunidade, três figuram entre as dez espécies com maior valor de importância, em um total de 26 espécies comerciais possíveis de exploração sustentável.

Abstract Purus National Forest (PNF), located in the municipality of Pauiní, Amazonas state, Brazil, has a high conservation status and a population of about one thousand inhabitants. However, the scarcity of environmental studies in a suitable scale for the PNF management planning demands studies that quantify and qualify the stock of resources, that identify the community demand and set sustainable forest production techniques. Thus, the objective of the present work was to analyze the floristic composition, forest structure and the forest management potential of part of a “terra firme” dense ombrophylous forest located in the Forest Management Unit (UMF-1) of Céu do Mapiá village, the largest populational nucleus of PNF. To do so, a forest inventory was made, sampling in a block of 12 parcels of 50x50m, and all trees with DBH ≥ 10 cm were measured. The floristic composition was carried out and the Shannon-Wiener diversity index and Pielou equability index were used to assess the biodiversity and the uniformity of the community. The structural forest analysis was based on the absolute and relative values of density, dominance, frequency, importance value and diameter distribution of the basal areas and volumetric estimates of the population. A total of 1,764 individuals, pertaining to 35 botanic families, 91 genera and 163 possible specimens were registered, emphasizing that less than 40% (65) were identified at the species level. The UMF-1 is characterized by the high floristic diversity (H’= 4.10), few dominant species (J = 0.81) and many species with low abundance. Out of the commercial species used by the community, three are among the ten species with the greatest importance value, a total of 26 possible commercial species of sustainable exploitation.

Abstract The objective of this study was to assess and compare two methodologies to predict the mortality of individual trees in a seasonal semi-deciduous forest located in the municipality of Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The data came from 10 permanent plots and were randomly divided into two groups: fitting (6 plots) and validation (4 plots). When assessing Methodology 1, the mortality was considered a dichotomous variable in a logistic model, assuming a value of 1 for a dead tree and 0 for a living tree. In Methodology 2, the mortality probability was estimated by the group of trees for each plot and for each measurement interval. After the analysis, it was observed that Methodology 2 provided more consistent mortality estimates when compared to the mortality estimated by Methodology 1.

Resumo A modelagem do recrutamento em florestais tropicais é importante para estudos de sustentabilidade do manejo florestal, por dar subsídio adequado à recuperação do estoque de madeira. O objetivo do trabalho foi estimar o recrutamento após a colheita de madeira, empregando um modelo de rede neural artificial (RNA). A área de estudo está localizada na Floresta Nacional do Tapajós (55°00’ W, 2°45’ S), Pará. Em 64 ha da área de estudo, em 1979, foi realizada colheita intensiva de 72,5 m3 ha-1. Em 1981 foram instaladas, aleatoriamente, 36 parcelas permanentes de 50 m x 50 m. Essas parcelas foram mensuradas em 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2007, 2010 e 2012. Para modelar o recrutamento foram consideradas as variáveis da subparcela-alvo e a sua vizinhança. As estimativas obtidas no treino e na generalização da RNA foram avaliadas pelas estatísticas: correlação () e raiz quadrada do erro quadrático médio (RQRQM), sendo obtido RQRQM 35,6% e 0,89. Foi possível modelar a tendência do recrutamento ao longo do tempo em florestas tropicais, após a colheita de madeira.

Abstract Recruitment models in tropical forests are important for studies on forest management sustainability because they provide adequate support to recovery of wood stocks. The objective of this work was to estimate recruitment after wood harvesting by using an artificial neural network (ANN) model. The study area is located at Tapajós National Forest (55° 00’ W, 2° 45’ S), Pará state. In 64 ha of the study area, in 1979, an intensive harvest of 72.5 m3 ha-1 was carried out. In 1981, 36 permanent plots of 50 m x 50 m were randomly installed. These plots were measured in 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2007, 2010 and 2012. For recruitment modeling, the variables of the target subplot and its vicinity were considered. The estimates obtained in ANN training and generalization were evaluated by statistics: correlation () and root mean square error (RMSE) were determined: RMSE 35.6% and 0.89. Recruitment tendency could be modeled over time in tropical forests after wood harvesting.

Resumo A procura intensa por essências madeireiras nativas consolidadas, que apresentam elevado uso, pode ocasionar a superexploração de espécies e diminuição do seu estoque na floresta. Uma alternativa para essa situação é a substituição dessas espécies por outras com propriedades da madeira semelhantes e com suficiente estoque de crescimento na floresta. O objetivo deste trabalho foi agrupar as espécies da Amazônia através das propriedades físico-mecânicas da madeira e realizar a análise discriminante para identificar quais características tecnológicas são mais importantes para o agrupamento. As espécies estudadas foram provenientes de oito localidades distintas da região amazônica. As propriedades físico-mecânicas utilizadas obtidas da literatura especializada nacional foram: densidade básica, contração (tangencial, radial e volumétrica), flexão estática, compressão paralela e perpendicular às fibras, dureza Janka paralela e transversal, tração perpendicular às fibras, fendilhamento e cisalhamento. Foi utilizada a técnica de análise multivariada de Cluster (distância euclidiana simples e o método de Ward) e a análise discriminante para avaliar o agrupamento. A análise de Cluster foi eficiente para agrupar as espécies, que foram separadas em três grupos distintos. As espécies que se destacaram foram a Helicostylis pedunculata Benoist. e Tachigali chrysophylla (Poepp.) Zarucchi & Herend., por se agruparem com as espécies mais comercializadas. Os menores valores de Wilks’Lambda foram da densidade da madeira (0,759053), cisalhamento (0,802960) e compressão paralela às fibras (0,825594). Essas características foram as mais determinantes para discriminar os grupos. A análise de agrupamento é eficiente para indicar a substituição de espécies consolidadas na Amazônia.

Abstract The intense search for consolidated native wood essences, which are highly used, can lead to the overexploitation of species and decrease their stocks in the forest. An alternative to this situation is the replacement of these species by others with similar wood properties and with sufficient forest growing stock. The objective of this work was to cluster the Amazon species through wood physical-mechanical properties and perform the discriminant analysis to identify which technological characteristics are more important for the clustering. The species studied came from eight different locations in the Amazon region. The properties used were: basic density, contraction (tangential, radial and volumetric), static flexion, compression parallel and perpendicular to the fibers, Janka hardness parallel and transversal, traction perpendicular to the fibers, cracking and shearing, all obtained from the national specialized literature. Multivariate Cluster analysis (simple Euclidean distance and Ward’s method) and the discriminant analyses were used to evaluate the clustering. Cluster analysis was efficient to cluster the species, which were separated into three distinct groups. The species that stood out were Helicostylis pedunculata Benoist. and Tachigali chrysophylla (Poepp.) Zarucchi & Herend., f or clustering with the most commercialized species. The lowest values of Wilks’Lambda were wood density (0.759053), shearing (0.802960) and compression parallel to the fibers (0.825594). These characteristics were the most determinant to discriminate the clusters. The clustering analysis was efficient for the separation of the species into marketing clusters.

Abstract: Timber from the second cutting cycle may make up the majority of future crop volumetric. However, there are few studies of the physical and mechanical properties of this timber, which are important to support the consolidation of new species. This study aimed to use Artificial Neural Networks to estimate the physical and mechanical properties of wood from the Amazon, based on basic density. The properties were: shrinkage (tangential, radial and volumetric), static bending, parallel and perpendicular to the fiber compression, parallel and transverse to the fibers, Janka hardness, traction, splitting and shear. The estimate followed the tendency of the data observed for the tangential, radial and volumetric shrinkage. The network estimated the mechanical properties with significant accuracy. Distribution of errors, static bending, parallel compression and perpendicular to the fiber compression also showed significant accuracy. Artificial Neural Networks can be used to estimate the physical and mechanical properties of wood from Amazon species.

RESUMO No manejo florestal é importante projetar a distribuição diamétrica ao longo do ciclo de corte para subsidiar as técnicas silviculturais mais adequadas à estrutura da floresta. O objetivo do trabalho foi projetar a distribuição diamétrica ao longo do ciclo de corte utilizando Matriz de Transição Markoviana. Em 1979 foi realizada a colheita seletiva, com intensidade de 72,5 m3 ha-1, em uma área de 64 ha, na Floresta Nacional do Tapajós, Pará. Em 1981 foram instaladas, aleatoriamente, 36 parcelas permanentes de 50 m x 50 m medidas sucessivamente em 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2007, 2010 e 2012. Para a projeção foram usadas duas matrizes de transição: uma com intervalo de tempo de um ano (1981 a 1982) e outra de dois anos (1981 a 1983). Todas as projeções apresentaram distribuição diamétrica em forma de “J” invertido, com pequena descontinuidade no último ano (2012). Houve aderência da distribuição diamétrica a 5% de significância entre os dados observados e estimados até aos 11 anos de projeção. A matriz de transição pode ser usada para projetar a distribuição diamétrica após a colheita em pequenos períodos de tempo após a colheita florestal.

ABSTRACT In forest management, it is important to project diametric distribution along the cutting cycle to subsidize the most suitable silvicultural techniques to forest structure. The aim of this work was to project diametric distribution along the cutting cycle using Markov Transition Matrix. In 1979, selective harvest was performed with an intensity of 72.5 m3 ha-1, in a 64 ha area in ‘Floresta Nacional do Tapajós’ - Pará state (PA). In 1981, 36 permanent plots of 50m x 50m were randomly installed and measured successively in 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2007, 2010 and 2012. For the projection, two transition matrices were used: one with time interval of one year (1981 to 1982) and another of two years (1981 to 1983). All projections showed diametric distribution in inverted “J” form, with small discontinuity last year (2012). There was adherence of diametric distribution at 5% significance between observed and estimated data, up to 11 years of projection. Transition matrix can be used to project diametric distribution after harvest in short periods of time after the forest harvest.

RESUMO As plantas invasoras podem modificar profundamente as características físicas e biológicas de seus novos ambientes, especialmente quando esses habitats já estão fragmentados e reduzidos pela pressão antropogênica, como a Mata Atlântica do Brasil. Aqui, nós hipotetizamos que as palmeiras exóticas se estabelecem com sucesso entre as populações naturais de Euterpe edulis através de entrada contínua de propágulos pela avifauna, altas taxas de germinação e rápido crescimento. Como resultado, a palmeira nativa está sofrendo declínio e pode estar ameaçada de extinção. A partir de 2007, realizamos um inventário florestal contínuo (FCI) a cada três anos nos fragmentos florestais primários e secundários de Viçosa, Minas Gerais. Usamos uma matriz de Markov para projetar futuras distribuições de palmeiras. A floresta secundária continha três espécies de palmeiras exóticas: Archontophoenix alexandrae, Livistona chinensis e Arenga caudata. A primeira palmeira é um sério risco para as populações naturais de E. edulis na Mata Atlântica, devido às interações freqüentes com as aves, à rápida germinação e à colonização agressiva nos estratos verticais inferior e médio da floresta. Atualmente, as populações naturais de E. edulis são viáveis e sustentáveis, capazes de regeneração, crescimento e frutificação, pois suas comunidades mantêm o fluxo gênico contínuo, dominando os estratos verticais da floresta em comparação com as palmeiras exóticas. No entanto, palmeiras exóticas devem ser monitoradas e medidas de controle devem ser analisadas, especialmente em áreas com populações de A. alexandrae.

ABSTRACT Invasive plants can profoundly modify physical and biological characteristics of their new environments, especially when such habitats are already fragmented and reduced by anthropogenic pressure, such as the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. Here, we hypothesized that exotic palms successfully establish among the natural Euterpe edulis populations through a continuous propagule input by avifauna, high germination rates, and rapid growth. As a result, the native palm is experiencing decline and may be threatened with extinction. Beginning in 2007, we conducted a continuous forest inventory (FCI) every three years in the primary and secondary forest fragments of Viçosa, Minas Gerais. We use a Markov matrix to project future distributions of palm trees. The secondary forest contained three exotic palm species: Archontophoenix alexandrae, Livistona chinensis, and Arenga caudata. The first palm is a serious risk to natural E. edulis populations in the Atlantic because of frequent interactions with birds, rapid germination, and aggressive colonization in the lower to medium vertical forest strata. Currently, natural E. edulis populations are viable and sustainable, capable of regeneration, growth, and fruiting, their communities maintain continuous gene flow, dominating vertical forest strata compared with exotic palms. However, exotic palms should be monitored and control measures should be analyzed, especially in areas with A. alexandrae populations.

RESUMO Na Mata Atlântica existem poucos estudos que relacionam os parâmetros fitossociológicos com a estocagem de carbono. Nesse sentido, objetivou-se com o estudo caracterizar a estrutura fitossociológica e relacionar com o índice Valor de Importância em Carbono (VIC) para uma Floresta Estacional Semidecidual, em Viçosa, MG. Calcularam-se a diversidade, os parâmetros fitossociológicos, além do VIC. As espécies Piptadenia gonoacantha, Mabea fistulifera, Anadenanthera peregrina se destacaram no índice de VIC. A ordem de importância das espécies foi alterada ao analisar o Índice de Valor de Importância, Valor de Importância em Volume e VIC. Com isso, dependendo dos objetivos de manejo, as espécies têm importância diferenciada. Por fim, entende-se que o índice Valor de Importância em Carbono, que une informações fitossociológicas com estocagem de carbono, é muito importante para a caracterização das florestas e verificação do seu papel na mitigação da concentração de gases de efeito estufa na atmosfera.

ABSTRACT Few studies in the Atlantic Forest have related phytosociology with carbon storage. The objective of this study was to characterize the vegetation structure and relate it with the importance value index (IVI) in terms of carbon for a semideciduous forest in Viçosa-MG. Besides the IVI, the diversity and phytosociology were investigated. The species Piptadenia gonoacantha, Mabea fistulifera, Anadenanthera peregrina stood out regarding the IVI index. The order of importance of the species changed when analyzing the Importance Value, the Importance Value on Volume and IVI. Thus, depending on the management objectives, species had different importance. Finally, it was evident that the IVI in terms of carbon, a measure that joins phytosociological and carbon storage information, is very important for the characterization of forests and for mitigating greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere.

RESUMO O Cerrado é um hotspot de biodiversidade e possivelmente a savana tropical mais ameaçada do mundo. Apesar do Cerrado ter um importante papel no balanço de carbono global, estudos sobre o estoque de carbono neste bioma são raros, especialmente com a geração de estimativas por espécie. Dessa forma, neste estudo foi estimado o teor e estoque de carbono por espécie em uma área de Cerrado. Para isso, 120 árvores pertencentes a 18 espécies foram amostradas destrutivamente para se determinar a biomassa acima do solo em um fragmento de cerrado sensu stricto. O teor de carbono na biomassa seca foi determinado em laboratório e para as espécies que não foram amostradas foi usado um valor médio de teor de carbono. A biomassa das demais árvores inventariadas foi estimada usando-se uma equação alométrica. O teor de carbono médio na biomassa seca foi de 50,5 ± 0,20% e o estoque de carbono para o fragmento de Cerrado avaliado foi de 22.385,46 kg ha-1. Os resultados indicam que algumas espécies tem um estoque de carbono maior que outras. O número de indivíduos, o tamanho e a densidade da madeira são pontos-chave que precisam ser considerados para a avaliação do estoque de carbono em florestas com grande número de espécies. A manutenção das espécies que contribuem com um alto estoque de carbono é essencial para manter um balanço de carbono positivo em áreas de Cerrado.

ABSTRACT Cerrado is a biodiversity hotspot and possibly the most threatened tropical savanna in the world. Although Cerrado has an important role in the global carbon balance, studies about carbon stock in the biome are rare, especially with estimates per species. Thus, we estimated the carbon content and stock by species in a Cerrado area. We destructively sampled 120 trees from 18 species to determine tree aboveground biomass at a cerrado sensu stricto remnant. The carbon content in dry biomass was determined in laboratory and for the species not sampled an average value was used. The biomass of the remaining inventoried trees was estimated using an allometric equation. The carbon content in dry biomass had mean of 50.5 ± 0.20% and the carbon stock for the Cerrado remnant accounted for 22,385.46 kg ha-1. Results indicated that some species had higher carbon stock than others. The number of individuals, their size and wood density are key points that need to be considered in the evaluation of carbon stock in forests with large number of species. Maintaining species that contribute to higher carbon stock is essential to keep a positive carbon balance in Cerrado areas

RESUMO Abordou-se, neste trabalho, o manejo florestal sustentável de produtos florestais não madeireiros (PFNM) e avaliou a viabilidade técnica e econômica da produção de frutos de jatobá no sul goiano. Em uma primeira etapa foram mapeadas e georreferenciadas 931 árvores do gênero Hymenaea, nos municípios de Campestre de Goiás - GO, Nazário - GO e Trindade - GO. Em uma segunda etapa, foram estimados os coeficientes técnicos de produção e coletados dados, juntamente ao produtor, quanto aos custos na produção de semente e farinha. O custo de produção foi de R$ 54,06.kg-1 e o preço de venda, de R$ 67,58.kg-1. As análises de viabilidade econômica de plantios de jatobá e de implantação de uma Agroindústria Rural de Pequeno Porte (ARPP) indicaram a partir dos critérios de avaliação econômica VPL (Valor Presente Líquido), TIR (Taxa Interna de Retorno), B/C (razão benefício-custo) e VAE (Valor Equivalente Anual), que há viabilidade na utilização dos frutos em ambos os cenários, desde que as práticas de manejo e estratégias de conservação fomentem a produção sustentável, provendo recursos econômicos enquanto ocorre, simultaneamente, a conservação dos recursos genéticos do jatobá.

ABSTRACT This study addressed the sustainable forest management of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) and evaluated the technical and economic viability of producing fruits of jatoba in southern Goiás. In the first step it was mapped and georeferenced 931 trees in the genus Hymenaea at Campestre de Goiás, GO state, Nazario, GO state and Trindade, GO state. In a second step, it was estimated the coefficients of production and technical data collected by the producer as to the costs in the production of seed and flour. The production cost was R$ 54,06.kg-1 and the sales price was R$ 67,58.kg-1. The analysis of the economic viability of jatoba plantations and the implementation of a "Agroindústria Rural de Pequeno Porte (ARPP)" (Small Rural Agricultural Industry), indicated that from the economic evaluation criteria VPL (Net Present Value), TIR (Internal Return Rate), B/C (Benefit-cost analysis) and VAE (Equivalent Annual Value), it is viable to use the fruits in both scenarios as long as the management practices and conservation strategies encourage the sustainable production, providing economic resources while simultaneously promotes the conservation of the jatoba genetic resources.

RESUMO Neste trabalho, o objetivo foi testar o Método da Altura Relativa na cubagem de árvores em pé de Anadenanthera peregrina. Testaram-se, então, quatro diferentes maneiras de se empregar este método, comparando-os com um modelo de taper selecionado dentre vários outros disponíveis na literatura. Foram utilizados dados de 110 árvores-amostra cubadas em pé por meio do Pentaprisma de Weller. Para descrever o perfil do fuste de árvores de Anadenanthera peregrina, o Método da Altura Relativa apresentou expressiva superioridade quando se usaram todas as árvores e, quando se usaram partes destas, obteve-se o mesmo nível de acurácia que o uso de dados reais de cubagem no ajuste de modelos de taper.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to test the Relative Height Method in the scaling of standing trees of Anadenanthera peregrina. Thus, four different approaches of the use of this method were tested and then compared with a taper model selected among those available in the literature. Data from 110 standing tree samples scaled by the Weller Pentaprism were used. To describe the bole profile of Anadenanthera peregrina trees, the Relative Height Method showed an expressive superiority when all the trees were used, and, when part of them was used, the level of accuracy was the same as that of the use of actual scale data in the adjustment of the taper models.

RESUMO Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar um processo de regulação cooperativa de produtores florestais, em comparar com o método de regulação clássico e individual das propriedades. Vinte propriedades florestais foram utilizadas 20 propriedades florestais como exemplo para elaboração de três cenários de regulação florestal: 1) regulação individual, 2) regulação em grupo, e 3) regulação cooperativa. O Valor Presente Líquido (VPL) dos cenários foram otimizados a partir de modelos de programação matemática, e comparados com um cenário base, sem regulação florestal. Para a regulação cooperativa proposta, as propriedades tiveram um fator de proporção para distribuição da renda líquida anual, calculado a partir do resultado do cenário base. Comparando os resultados da maximização do VPL dos cenários 1 e 3 com o cenário sem regulação, o custo da regulação individual foi, em média, de 25%, enquanto que para regulação cooperativa foi de 11%, ou seja, redução 14% no custo da regulação das propriedades. A regulação cooperativa apresentou ainda a vantagem de menor divisão das áreas das propriedades quando comparado à regulação individual.

ABSTRACT This study aims to assess the cooperative regulation process of forestry producers in comparison to the traditional individual regulation of properties. Twenty (20) forest properties are studied as examples of the development of three forest regulation scenarios: 1) individual regulation, 2) group regulation, and 3) cooperative regulation. The Net Present Value (NPV) of each of the scenarios is optimized according to mathematical programming models and compared to a baseline scenario without forest regulation. According to the proposed cooperative regulation, properties had a proportion factor for annual net revenue distribution calculated from results of the baseline scenario. By comparing the NPV maximization results from scenarios 1 and 3 with the non-regulation scenario, the cost for individual regulation is on average 25%, while being only 11% for cooperative regulation, that is, a 14% reduction in property regulation costs. Additionally, cooperative regulation had the advantage of dividing properties into fewer areas when compared to individual regulation.
