ABSTRACT: In Brazil, the optimal dose of phosphorus in the cultivation of yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis St. Hil.) clones has yet to be defined. This study verified the productivity of yerba mate clones in response to the application of P doses and determined the critical level of the nutrient in soil and yerba mate leaves. The experiment was developed in Itaiópolis-SC, in humic cambisol, from 2013 to 2020. Five doses of the nutrient were evaluated in two clones (BRS-BLD Aupaba and F2) of yerba mate. Fertility was defined by planting/post-planting (0, 2.3; 4.5; 6.8, and 9.0 g plant-1), canopy formation 1 (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 g plant-1), canopy formation 2 (0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 g plant-1), and production (0, 16.7; 33.3; 50.0; 66.7 kg ha-1). Harvests took place between July 2015 and January 2020, at 18-month intervals. The productivity of leaves, fine branches, and thick branches was evaluated. In the 2020 harvest, soil and leaf samples were collected to determine the critical level of P. The productivity of clone components increased with phosphate fertilization in all evaluated harvests. The critical levels of P for clones, Aupaba and F2, were 5.2 and 6.3 mg dm-3 in soil and 1.03 and 1.11 g kg-1 in leaves, respectively. Yerba mate is demanding of P, expressing maximum productivity in the planting phase, canopy formation 1 and 2, and production when doses of 5, 25, 40 g plant-1, and 35 kg ha-1 of P2O5 are applied, respectively.

RESUMO: No Brasil, a dose de fósforo no cultivo de clones de erva-mate ainda não está definida. O objetivo do estudo foi verificar a produtividade de clones de erva-mate em resposta a aplicação de doses de P e determinar o nível crítico do nutriente no solo e folhas de erva-mate. O experimento foi implantado em Itaiópolis-SC, em Cambissolo Húmico, em 2013. Foram avaliadas cinco doses do nutriente em dois clones (BRS-BLD Aupaba e F2) de erva-mate. As adubações foram definidas como de plantio/pós-plantio (0, 2,3; 4,5; 6,8 e 9,0 g planta-1), formação de copa 1 (0, 10, 20, 30, 40 e 50 g planta-1), formação de copa 2 (0, 15, 30, 45 e 60 g planta-1) e produção (0, 16,7; 33,3; 50,0; 66,7 kg ha-1). As colheitas ocorreram entre julho de 2015 e janeiro de 2020, com intervalos de 18 meses. Avaliou-se produtividade de folhas, galhos finos e galhos grossos. Na safra de 2020, foram coletadas amostras de solo e folhas para determinação do nível crítico de P. A produtividade dos componentes dos clones aumentou com a adubação fosfatada em todas as safras avaliadas. Os níveis críticos de P para os clones Aupaba e F2 foram 5,2 e 6,3 mg dm-3 no solo e 1,03 e 1,11 g kg-1 nas folhas, respectivamente. A erva-mate é exigente em P, expressando produtividade máxima na fase de plantio, formação de copa 1 e 2 e produção, quando aplicado doses de P2O5 em torno de 5, 25, 40 g planta-1 e 35 kg ha-1, respectivamente.

ABSTRACT Despite the great economic importance of yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil.), information about clonal plantations and planting conditions of this tree is still scarce. Thus, we evaluated initial field establishment of five clonal yerba mate cultivars, planted at three seasons of the year (summer, autumn, and spring) in a shaded environment, and in the autumn, we also established blocks in a full sunlight environment, to compare both cultivation environments. We evaluated plants at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after planting, counting the surviving plants, shoots number, and measuring height and canopy diameter. At 12 months we also analyzed the caffeoylquinic acids (CQA) contents in mature leaves from different environments. Plant survival and growth were not affected by planting seasons. Cultivars Aupaba and BRS 409 had the highest survival rates in all seasons evaluated. The shaded environment provided greater survival and growth than full sunlight, also showing higher CQA levels in the leaves. Clonal cultivars Aupaba, BRS 408, and BRS 409 presented higher growth in both environments. The severe drought in the first year may have affected survival; however, growth was considered satisfactory and plants’ initial establishment was better in the shaded environment.

Resumo A erva-mate (Ilex paraguariensis) é uma espécie nativa do Brasil e fortemente ligada à cultura e à história dos estados da região sul do Brasil, seu maior produtor e exportador mundial. Entretanto, o desempenho produtivo dos ervais cultivados brasileiros vem diminuído ao longo dos últimos anos, a despeito das tecnologias de produção à disposição dos produtores. Diante disso, o objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar fatores que afetam a produtividade em função de níveis de produtividade da erva-mate cultivada. Para tanto, foram coletados dados a partir da aplicação de questionários estruturados em 470 propriedades rurais, distribuídos em toda a região produtora no Brasil. As propriedades foram agrupadas em níveis de produtividade utilizando a produtividade média e o seu desvio-padrão e a adoção tecnológica foi comparada entre os níveis. Para identificar as tecnologias mais determinantes para a produtividade, foi utilizado o modelo de regressão logística multinomial. De acordo com os resultados obtidos no presente estudo, os ervais cultivados são conduzidos por uma agricultura familiar diversificada, havendo o predomínio do baixo acesso à assistência técnica e ao aporte tecnológico. As propriedades com alto nível de produtividade apresentaram maior adoção tecnológica, maior presença da assistência técnica e maior capacitação da mão de obra. Entre as tecnologias avaliadas, a adubação, as mudas melhoradas, o controle de plantas daninhas, o controle de pragas, as ferramentas de poda e a poda de limpeza foram determinantes para a obtenção de médio e alto nível de produtividade. Dessa forma, políticas públicas que envolvam a capacitação e a transferência de tecnologias devem ser estimuladas no setor ervateiro, a fim de estimular a incorporação de novas tecnologias nos ervais brasileiros.

Abstract The yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) is a species native to Brazil which is strongly linked to the culture and history of the states of southern Brazil, the world's largest producer and exporter. However, the productive performance of yerba mate plantations in Brazil has decreased over the last few years, despite of the available technologies to producers. Therefore, the objective of this work was to study factors that affect the productivity as a function of productivity levels of cultivated yerba mate. The data were collected by applying structured questionnaires in 470 farms distributed throughout the yerba mate-producing region in Brazil. The properties were grouped into productivity levels using the average productivity and its standard deviation, and the technological adoption was compared between the levels. The multinomial logistic regression model was used to identify the most determinant technologies for productivity. According to our results, the cultivated yerba mate is conducted by diversified family agriculture, with a predominance of low access to technical assistance and technology. Properties with a high level of productivity showed higher technological adoption, a more significant presence of technical assistance, and greater workforce training. Among the evaluated technologies, fertilization, improved seedlings, weed control, pest control, pruning tools, and cleaning pruning were determinants for medium and high productivity levels. Thus, public policies involving training and transfer of technologies should be encouraged in the yerba mate sector to stimulate the incorporation of new technologies in the Brazilian yerba mate plantations.

Resumo Na erva-mate (Ilex paraguariensis) o principal produto colhido é composto por folhas (FO) e galhos finos (GF), resultando em elevada exportação de nutrientes, dentre eles o N. As informações técnico-científicas disponíveis para subsidiar uma recomendação da adubação nitrogenada racional são insuficientes, o que põe em risco a sustentabilidade da produção, especialmente se as colheitas são mais intensivas. Por isso, objetivou-se avaliar a influência da adubação nitrogenada e do intervalo de colheita no teor de N e carbono orgânico (CO) do solo, na produtividade e no estado nutricional da erva-mate. O experimento foi instalado em São Mateus do Sul - PR, em erval com sete anos e meio de idade, estabelecido em Latossolo Vermelho Distrófico, no qual se avaliaram doses de 0, 20, 40, 80, 160 e 320 kg ha-1 de N, para intervalos de colheita de 12, 18 e 24 meses. Os teores de N e CO do solo, nas formas lábil (NL e COL) e total (NT e COT), foram determinados nas profundidades de 0-10, 10-20 e 20-40 cm. A colheita consistiu na remoção de aproximadamente 95 % da copa que brotou da colheita anterior. A massa verde colhida foi determinada individualmente para os componentes FO, GF e galho grosso (GG), sendo FO+GF correspondente à erva-mate comercial (ECOM). Avaliou-se, também, a relação entre massa verde/seca (MV/MS) e o teor de N na FO, GF e GG. O efeito positivo da adubação nitrogenada no teor de NL e COL do solo foi mais expressivo no menor intervalo de colheita e negativo ou nulo para o intervalo de 24 meses. As doses de N aumentaram o teor de NT nos maiores intervalos de colheita e reduziram para colheita de 12 meses e o COT não foi influenciado pela adubação. Houve aumento da produtividade com as doses de N, e as respostas mais expressivas ocorreram nos maiores intervalos entre colheitas. Intervalo de 12 meses entre colheitas é insuficiente para a planta recuperar-se do impacto causado pela colheita. O intervalo de 18 meses é o mais recomendável, desde que a planta esteja bem nutrida em N. A adubação nitrogenada não influencia o teor de água na erva-mate comercial verde, sendo esta dependente do intervalo de tempo entre colheitas. Teor foliar de N entre 33,0 e 37,0 g kg-1 pode indicar plantas bem nutridas, independentemente do intervalo de colheita.

Abstact Leaves (FO) and thin branches (GF) are the main plant components harvested from Ilex paraguariensis (mate) plantations, leading to high exportation of nutrients, among them, the nitrogen (N). Scientific and technical information are scarce to support fertilizer recommendation aiming to replenish N exportation and to sustain mate productivity. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the influence of N fertilization and harvest intervals on N and organic carbon (CO) content in the soil and on mate productivity and N content. The experiment was conducted in São Mateus do Sul, Paraná state, Brazil, in a seven-year old mate plantation established on an Oxisol, where we evaluated the effect of 0, 20, 40, 80, 160, and 320 kg ha-1 of N, for harvest intervals of 12, 18, and 24 months. Nitrogen (NL) and CO (COL) in the labile and total (NT and COT) forms were determined in the soil at depths of 0-10, 10-20 and 20-40 cm. Harvest consisted in the removal of 95 % of the tree crown sprouted from the previous harvesting. The green material collected was evaluated individually for the components FO, GF and thick branches (GG), being FO+GF the commercial mate product (ECOM). We also evaluated the plant component relationships between green/dry weights (MV/MS), as well as the contents of N in FO, GF and GG. The positive effect of N fertilization on NL and COL contents in the soil was more expressive for the shortest harvesting interval, and was negative or null for the 24-month interval. Nitrogen doses increased the content of NT in the largest harvest interval and reduced the yield for 12 months; COT was not influenced by fertilization. We observed increased productivity with N doses, and the most significant responses occurred in longer harvest intervals. The interval of 12 months between harvests is insufficient for the plant recovery from the previous harvesting impacts. The 18-month interval is more recommendable because the plant is well nourished in N. Nitrogen does not affect the water content of the commercial green yerba mate, which is more affected by the time between harvests. The leaf N content between 33.0 and 37.0 g kg-1 may indicate well-nourished plants, regardless the harvest interval.

ABSTRACT Native to subtropical region of South America, yerba mate is responsive to P under some conditions, but the degree of influence of genetic and soil on the growth and composition of the leaf is unknown. The aim of study was to evaluate plant growth, nutrients and potentially toxic elements in leaves of yerba mate clones in response to P application in acid soils. In greenhouse condition, two yerba mate clone seedlings were grown (210 days) in pots, each clone in a completely randomized design in factorial scheme (with and without P; four acid soils). The elemental composition of leaves and the growth of plants were determined. Phosphorus promoted plant growth, but this was not accompanied by increased P in leaf tissue in all conditions tested. The P effect on the elemental composition varied: decrease/null (N, K, Mg, Mn, Cu, Ni, B, Mo, Al, Cd); increase/null (C/N, C, Ca, Fe, V); increase/decrease/null (Zn, Ba, Pb) and; null (Cr). The soils affect the elemental composition of the leaves, especially Mn, with accumulation greater than 1000 mg kg-1. The Ba, Pb, Al and Zn in the leaves varied among clones. Yerba mate response to P was affected by edaphic and plant factors.

RESUMO As sucessivas colheitas na base de folhas (FO) e galhos finos (GF), sem a necessária reposição nutricional, têm proporcionado quedas na produtividade brasileira de erva-mate nos últimos 20 anos. Neste sentido, o objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a influência do intervalo de colheita e da adubação fosfatada na disponibilidade de fósforo (P) no solo, na produtividade e no estado nutricional da erva-mate. O experimento foi conduzido em São Mateus do Sul - PR, em Latossolo Vermelho-Escuro álico, onde se avaliaram doses de 0, 20, 40, 80, 160 e 320 kg ha-1 de P2 O5 para colheitas com intervalos de 12, 18 e 24 meses em erval com sete anos. A colheita consistiu na remoção de aproximadamente 95 % da copa formada após a colheita anterior. A massa verde colhida foi determinada individualmente para os componentes FO, GF e galho grosso (GG), sendo FO + GF correspondente à erva-mate comercial (ECOM). Dos componentes da planta, também se avaliou a relação entre massa verde/seca (MV/MS) e teor de P na FO, GF e GG. No momento da colheita coletaram-se amostras de solo nas profundidades de 0-10, 10-20 e 20-40 cm, nas quais se avaliou a disponibilidade de P. A adubação fosfatada elevou a disponibilidade de P no solo nas primeiras camadas e a cultura respondeu positivamente ao nutriente com aumento da produtividade em todos os componentes avaliados. Altas produtividades de ECOM, independentemente do intervalo de colheita, dependem de disponibilidade de P no solo em nível alto na camada de 0-10 cm. Colheitas com intervalos de tempo maiores resultaram em maiores produtividades de ECOM, mas para maximizar a produtividade, necessita-se de doses mais elevadas de fertilizantes. Intervalos de 12 meses são insuficientes para que a planta se recupere do impacto da colheita, mesmo quando a planta está bem nutrida em fósforo.

ABSTRACT Successive harvesting of leaves (FO) and thin branches (GF), with no nutrient reposition by fertilization, have been resulting in continuous decrease in Brazilian productivity of mate in the last 20 years. So, the objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of harvest interval and phosphate nutrition on the availability of phosphorus (P) in the soil, on the productivity, as well as on the nutritional status of mate plants. The experiment was conducted in São Mateus do Sul/PR, in an Oxisol, where doses of 0, 20, 40, 80, 160 and 320 kg ha-1 of P2 O5 were evaluated for harvest intervals of 12, 18 and 24-months in a seven-year-old mate plantation. Soil P availability, at 0-10, 10-20 and 20-40 cm depth, was assessed. Harvest consisted on removal of approximately 95 % of the tree canopy formed since the previous harvest. Harvested green material was individually determined for FO, GF and thick branches (GG), where FO + GF corresponded to the commercial mate (ECOM). The relationship between green/dry mass (MV/MS) was also evaluated for all plant components, as well as the content of P in FO, GF and GG. Phosphate fertilization increased the availability of P in the upper soil layer and the plant responded positively to P application by increasing the dry mass of all the assessed components. Harvests with longer intervals resulted in greater productivity of ECOM, but for maximizing productivity, high doses of fertilizers are needed. Twelve month intervals are insufficient to allow the plant to recover from the harvest impact, even if well-nourished in phosphorus.

RESUMO Na colheita da erva-mate, a parte comercial é composta por folhas e galhos finos, enquanto os galhos grossos (GG) são considerados resíduos e deixados no campo, mas que podem apresentar potencial para uso como energia. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a influência da adubação fosfatada e do intervalo de colheita na produtividade de galhos grossos de erva-mate e em suas propriedades físicas e energéticas e, de briquetes deles derivados. Em um erval com sete anos aplicaram-se doses de 0, 20, 40, 80, 160 e 320 kg.ha-1 de P2O5 e utilizandos os intervalos de colheitas de 12, 18 e 24 meses. Determinou-se a massa seca, diâmetro médio, teor de P e propriedades físicas e energéticas dos GG. Com os GG, após sua transformação em partículas e briquetagem, foram determinadas propriedades físicas e energéticas. Determinou-se, ainda, a disponibilidade de P no solo. A adubação fosfatada aumentou a produtividade do GG em intervalos maiores de colheita, aumentando a quantidade de energia produzida por unidade de área, mas não alterou a densidade básica e poder calorífico superior da madeira. Os intervalos de colheita da erva-mate não interferiram na densidade aparente e no poder calorífico de briquetes produzidos pelo GG. Os GG colhidos com intervalos de 18 e 24 meses produziram madeira com maior densidade básica e poder calorífico superior. Os GG ou os briquetes apresentam propriedades energéticas e físicas adequadas, sendo tecnicamente, um resíduo vegetal com grande potencial para uso como energia.

ABSTRACT In mate crop, the commercial part consists of leaves and thin branches, while the large branches (LB) are considered unused residues and left in the field, although they may have potential for use as energy. The objective of this paper was to evaluate the influence of phosphorus fertilization and harvest interval in productivity of mate large branches and in their physical and energetic properties, as well as in derived briquettes. In a seven-year-old plantation, doses of 0, 20, 40, 80, 160 and 320 kg.ha-1 of P2O5 were applied considering harvest intervals of 12, 18 and 24 months. Dry mass, average diameter, P content, and physical and energetic properties of LB were determined. With LB, after its transformation into particles and briquetting, physical and energetic properties were determined, as well as P availability in soil. The phosphorus fertilization increased LB productivity in larger harvest intervals, increasing the amount of energy produced per unit of area, but did not change basic density and gross calorific value of wood. Mate harvest intervals did not affect the apparent density and calorific value of briquettes produced by LB. LB harvested at intervals of 18 and 24 months produced wood with higher basic density and gross calorific value. LB or briquettes have adequate energetic and physical properties, being technically a plant residue with great potential for use as energy.

RESUMO Araucaria angustifolia (pinheiro-brasileiro ou araucária) é uma espécie nativa potencial para a silvicultura brasileira. No entanto, uma série de desafios e limitações técnicas ainda persistem, dificultando sua expansão como espécie para plantios florestais, dentre os quais se destaca a falta de avaliação de tecnologias de clonagem de materiais genéticos em condições de campo. O presente estudo objetivou avaliar a potencialidade da utilização de mudas de araucária produzidas por estaquia e enxertia para produção madeireira em comparação às produzidas por sementes, por meio da avaliação do vigor vegetativo a campo e assim estabelecer um fator de forma para plantios com idade equivalente. Mudas provenientes de estaquia e de sementes foram plantadas a campo em espaçamento 3 x 3 m, sendo parte das últimas destinadas a servirem de porta-enxertos para enxertia. O experimento foi conduzido num delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com três tratamentos e parcelas de uma planta (one tree plot). Plantas provenientes de estaquia apresentaram maior crescimento em diâmetro a altura do peito (7,4 cm) e altura total (4,2 m) aos 74 meses após o plantio, seguidas das mudas de enxertia e sementes, com resultados similares. Conclui-se que a estaquia e a enxertia são técnicas potenciais para a produção de mudas de araucária para fins madeireiros, sendo, de modo especial, a enxertiarecomendada pela facilidade de execução, além do fato de poder ser utilizada para formação de pomares para produção de sementes e apresentar incremento volumétrico e fator de forma similar a mudas produzidas por sementes.

ABSTRACT Araucaria angustifolia (Brazilian Pine or Araucaria) is a potential native species to Brazilian forestry. However, a number of challenges and technical restraints still persist, making difficult its expansion as a species for forest plantations, among which the lack of cloning technologies evaluation in field conditions. So the present study aimed to evaluate the potential use of Araucaria plants produced by cuttings and grafting for wood production in comparison to those produced by seeds, by assessing field vigor and establishing a form factor for plantations with equivalent age. Plants from cuttings and seeds were planted in a 3 x 3 m spacing, being part of the last intended to be rootstocks for grafting. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with three treatments and plots of a plant (one tree plot). Plants from cuttings had higher growth in diameter at breast height (7.4 ± 2.41 cm) and total height (4.2 ± 1.08 m) at 74 months after planting, followed by grafted plants and from seeds, with similar results. We conclude that cuttings and grafting are potential techniques for Araucaria plants formation for wood production, and, in particular, grafting is recommended by the easiness of in its application, besides the fact that it can be used for seed orchards formation and presents volumetric increase and form factor similar to seedlings.

RESUMO O estabelecimento de ervais com mudas propagadas por semente, sem critérios de seleção de matrizes, pode levar à baixa produtividade e qualidade do produto, sendo o uso de clones selecionados uma alternativa para superação deste problema. Com base nisso, este trabalho objetivou avaliar a sobrevivência, o crescimento e a produtividade da erva-mate em plantio estabelecido com mudas propagadas por miniestaquia e por semente. O experimento foi instalado com quatro tratamentos: testemunha (propagada por semente) e três procedências (Bituruna, Cruz Machado e São Mateus do Sul) propagadas por miniestaquia em nível de progênies. Avaliou-se a sobrevivência durante 12 meses, o crescimento por 24 meses e a produtividade aos três e cinco anos pós-plantio. Os métodos de propagação e as procedências não influenciaram a sobrevivência, obtendo-se média de 90% nesta característica, 12 meses após o plantio. O crescimento em altura total e diâmetro do colo foi semelhante entre procedências ao longo de 24 meses, sendo apenas a procedência Bituruna significativamente inferior em altura. A produtividade da segunda colheita foi, em média, sete vezes maior que a primeira para todas as procedências. Na segunda colheita, as plantas propagadas por miniestaquia produziram mais que as propagadas por sementes. A produção de mudas de erva-mate por miniestaquia de propágulos juvenis demonstra ser adequada, pois proporcionou maior produtividade de erva-mate comercial, de folha e massa total. Ervais estabelecidos com mudas propagadas por esta tecnologia produzem mais folhas e galhos finos e menor quantidade de galhos grossos em relação às propagadas por semente.

ABSTRACT The establishment of maté plants propagated by seeds with no genetic selection of mother trees can lead to low product productivity and quality, and the use of selected clones can be an alternative for overcoming this problem. This study aimed to evaluate the survival, growth and productivity of maté plantations established in a field with plants propagated by seeds and by mini-cuttings. Four treatments were used: control (plants propagated by seeds) and three provenances propagated by the mini-cutting technique at the progeny level (Bituruna, Cruz Machado and São Mateus do Sul, Paraná state, Brazil). There were evaluated the survival for 12 months, growth for 24 months and productivity at three and five years after planting. The propagation methods and provenances did not influence the survival, obtaining the average of 90 % for this feature 12 months after planting. The height and diameter were similar among provenances over 24 months, with only Bituruna provenance significantly lower in terms of height. The second harvest production was, on average, seven times higher than the first one for all provenances. In the second harvest, plants propagated by the mini-cutting technique produced more than the ones propagated by seeds. The propagation of maté by mini-cuttings of juvenile propagules proves to be appropriate because the highest commercial, leaf and total biomass yield. Maté plantations established with plants propagated by mini-cuttings produce more leaves and twigs and less thick branches, in relation to seed propagated plants.

A erva-mate (Ilex paraguariensis), espécie arbórea nativa das regiões subtropicais da América do Sul, ocorre no Brasil predominantemente na Região Sul. Apesar da histórica importância da cultura nessa região, até o momento, raros foram os trabalhos realizados sobre sua nutrição no intuito de melhorar a produtividade. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar a influência de doses de K e sua disponibilidade no solo, na produtividade e no estado nutricional da erva-mate. O experimento foi conduzido em São Mateus do Sul, PR, em um Latossolo Vermelho-Escuro álico, onde se avaliaram as doses 0, 20, 40, 80, 160 e 320 kg ha-1 de K2O em cultivo com sete anos de idade. A colheita, 24 meses após a instalação do experimento, consistiu na remoção de aproximadamente 95 % da copa, que brotou da colheita anterior. Avaliou-se, no solo, a disponibilidade de K nas profundidades de 0-10, 0-20, 10-20 e 20-40 cm. Na planta, avaliaram-se a massa verde de folhas (FO), galhos finos (GF), galhos grossos (GG) e erva-mate comercial (ECOM), correspondente a FO+GF. Foi, também, avaliada a relação entre massa verde/massa seca (MV/MS) e o teor de K nas FO, GF e GG. A adubação elevou a disponibilidade de K em todas as camadas do solo avaliadas, indicando boa mobilidade do nutriente mesmo em pequenas doses. A erva-mate respondeu positivamente ao aumento das doses de K2O, com incremento da produtividade de todos os componentes colhidos. A cultura evidenciou-se exigente em K, tendo a máxima produção de ECOM de 28,5 t ha-1, quando a disponibilidade do nutriente no solo, na camada de 0-20 cm, era de 72 mg dm-3. A erva-mate em fase de produção requer disponibilidade de K no solo entre o nível médio a alto, e, em solo argiloso e com baixo teor de K disponível, a dose de 300 kg ha-1de K2O deve ser aplicada em intervalo de 24 meses para obtenção de alta produtividade. O teor de K foliar de 16,0 g kg-1 é adequado para a cultura da erva-mate em fase de produção.

Yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) is a tree species native to the subtropical regions of South America, and is found in Brazil predominantly in the southern region. Despite the historical importance in this region, so far, studies on crop nutrition to improve yields are scarce. Thus, this study evaluated the effect of potassium rates on K soil availability, and the yield and nutritional status of yerba mate. The experiment was conducted in São Mateus do Sul, State of Paraná, on a Humox soil, where K2O rates of 0, 20, 40, 80, 160, and 320 kg ha-1 were tested on 7-year-old plantations. The experiment was harvested 24 months after installation by removing approximately 95 % of the canopy that had sprouted from the previous harvest. The soil was evaluated for K availability in the layers 0-10, 0-20, 10-20, and 20-40 cm. The plant parts leaf fresh matter (LM), twigs (TW), thick branches (BR) and commercial yerba mate (COYM), i.e., LM+TW, were analyzed. In addition, the relationship between fresh matter/dry matter (FM/DM) and K concentration in LM, AG and BR were evaluated. The fertilization increased K availability in all evaluated soil layers, indicating good mobility of the nutrient even at low rates. Yerba mate responded positively to increasing K2O rates with higher yields of all harvested components. The crop proved K-demanding, with a maximum COYM yield of 28.5 t ha-1, when 72 mg dm-3 K was available in the 0-20 cm layer. Yerba mate in the plant production stage requires soil K availability at medium to high level; in clayey soil with low K availability, a rate of 300 kg ha-1 K2O should be applied at 24 month intervals to obtain high yields. A leaf K concentration of 16.0 g ha-1 is suitable for yerba mate in the growth stage.

RESUMO A ocorrência natural da erva-mate em solos ácidos e com baixa fertilidade natural, levou essa espécie a ser considerada de baixa exigência nutricional, principalmente em relação ao fósforo, embora pouco se conheça também sobre a exigência de N e K. Diante disto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o crescimento, teor de nutrientes no solo e em plantas jovens de erva-mate submetidas a doses de P combinadas com NK. Aplicou-se 0, 100, 200, 400 e 600 mg dm-3 de P2O5 combinados com 0, 50 e 100 mg dm-3 de N e K2O a um Latossolo Vermelho distrófico. Três mudas de erva-mate foram transplantadas para vasos com 2,9 dm3 de solo. Aos 120 dias determinaram-se a altura, diâmetro do caule, comprimento e volume radicular e produção de matéria seca da parte aérea e radicular das mudas. Determinaram-se os teores de N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn e Al das folhas e raízes, além do conteúdo de N, P, K, Ca e Mg. Amostras de solo foram submetidas à análise química. O crescimento da erva-mate foi afetado pela interação entre P e NK, demonstrando melhor crescimento quando o teor de P no solo estava entre 18,5 a 28,6 mg dm-3 combinado com 100 mg dm-3 de N e K2O. Em doses superiores a 400 mg dm-3 de P2O5, as folhas passaram a apresentar clorose internerval, sintoma típico de deficiência de Fe. A ordem dos macronutrientes mais exigidos e que mais contribuíram para o crescimento da erva-mate foi P, N, K, Mg e Ca. A erva-mate cresce bem em solos com altos teores de P, mas depende da boa disponibilidade de N, K e Ca.

ABSTRACT Ilex paraguariensis is considered a low P-requiring species because it grows naturally in soils with low P content, although no much information is also available for N and K requirements. This trial aimed to evaluate the effect of increasing P rates, combined with N and K rates on Ilex paraguariensis growth and its mineral composition. Phosphorus rates of 0, 100, 200, 400 e 600 mg dm-3 of P2O5 were combined with 0, 50 e 100 mg dm-3 of N e K2O. The fertilizers were mixed with the soil and placed in plastic pots of 2.9 dm3. Seedlings of Ilex were transplanted to the pots and grown for 120 days. Ilex seedling growth was affected by the interaction of P and NK rates. The best P rate was between 18.5 and 28.6 mg dm-3and the highest growth was obtained when P was combined with 100 mg dm-3of N and K2O. Iron deficiency symptoms appeared at the P rates of 400 and 600 mg dm-3 of P2O5. It can be concluded that Ilex responds to increasing P rates, as long as plant N, K and Ca requirement is met.

RESUMO A erva-mate ocorre naturalmente em solos ácidos, mas é comumente cultivada em consórcio com culturas anuais que requerem correção da acidez. Contudo, pouco se conhece sobre seu comportamento frente à calagem. O objetivo desse estudo foi verificar a influência do calcário no crescimento e estado nutricional de plantas jovens de erva-mate. Para isso, incubou-se o solo com 0,0, 0,7, 1,8, 2,5, 3,4, 4,3 e 5,2 g dm-3 de calcário. Após 21 dias de incubação, mudas de erva-mate foram transplantadas para vasos com 3 dm3 de solo. Após 210 dias determinou-se o crescimento em altura e diâmetro, posteriormente separou-se as plantas em folha, caule e raiz para determinação da área foliar, comprimento e volume de raízes, produção de matéria seca e teor de N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn e Al, além da eficiência de utilização de Ca e Mg pela planta. O solo foi analisado quimicamente. O calcário elevou os teores de Ca, Mg e K do solo e estimulou um pequeno aumento no crescimento da parte aérea das plantas, o que não ocorreu para o sistema radicular. O máximo crescimento e produção de matéria seca da parte aérea da erva-mate ocorreu em pequenas doses de calcário, quando o teor de Ca e Mg no solo se situava, respectivamente, na faixa c de 3,3 a 3,4 e 1,1 a 1,4 cmol dm-3. Nas maiores doses de calcário os teores foliares de Cu, Zn, Mn e Fe e o crescimento das plantas foram fortemente reduzidos. A eficiência de utilização de Ca e Mg pela planta reduziu com o aumento da disponibilidade dos mesmos no solo. A erva-mate mostrou ser pouco responsiva à calagem e muito tolerante ao Al. Desta forma, a aplicação de calcário deve visar o suprimento de Ca e Mg para as plantas e não a correção da acidez do solo no intuito de neutralizar o Al trocável.

ABSTRACT Mate tea trees are native of south Brazil, growing on acid soils. However, small farmers intercrop this species with agricultural crops, which usually require liming to reduce the soil acidity. Therefore, this study aimed to verify the liming effect on Mate tea seedling growth and nutritional status. Samples of an acidic soil (pH = 4.2, Al3+ = 3.9 cmol dm-3) were incubated with increased rates (0.0, 0.7, 1.8, 2.5, 3.4, 4.3 and 5.2 g dm-3) of a liming material for 21 days. Then mate tea seedlings were transplanted to the pots containing 3 dm3 of soil, grown for 210 days. At the end of this period, seedlings were harvested, split into leaf plants, stem, and roots for determining the foliar area, root length and volume, dry matter production and levels of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn and Al as well as the efficiency of the usage of Ca and Mg by the plant. The soil was analyzed chemically. Calcareous elevated the values of Ca, Mg and K in the soil and stimulated a little increase in the aerial parts of the plants. Seedling maximum dry matter production was obtained at low rates of liming and drastically decreased at high liming rates. Micronutrients and Al seedling decreased with lime rate. Calcium and Mg utilization efficiency reduced with increasing availability of these nutrients in the soil. It can be concluded that mate tea plants are tolerant to soil acidity and the lime is needed only to supply Ca and Mg nutritional requirements.

RESUMO Em 2004, foram constatados sintomas da doença podridão-de-raízes em ervais nos municípios da região alta do Vale do Taquari, RS. Com o auxílio de técnicos da EMATER, fez-se um levantamento dos municípios que possuíam ervais com sintomas. Em 10% dos ervais afetados, coletaram-se amostras de raízes que foram enviadas para análise no Laboratório de Fitopatologia pertencente ao Departamento de Defesa Sanitária/CCR/UFSM. Foram isoladas e identificadas cinco diferentes espécies do fungo Fusarium associadas à doença: Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium solani, Fusarium decemcellulare, Fusarium tabacinum e Fusarium tricinctum. Todas as espécies se mostraram patogênicas quando inoculadas em plantas de erva- mate (Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil.). No momento da coleta das amostras, levantaram-se informações sobre o manejo do erval e discutiu-se a similaridade entre os sintomas apresentados na erva-mate e em culturas agronômicas bem como hipóteses sobre a origem do inóculo de Fusarium spp. que proporcionou a contaminação dos ervais.

ABSTRACT In 2004, symptoms of root rot disease were observed in erva-mate plantings in high areas of Region Taquari Valley, RS. With the help of EMATER, the municipal districts presenting plantings with symptoms were surveyed. In 10% of the affected plantings, root samples were collected and sent for analysis at the Plant Disease Laboratory at the Department of Plant Protection/CCR/UFSM. Five different species of at fungus Fusarium associated with the disease were isolated and identified: Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium solani, Fusarium decemcellulare, Fusarium tabacinum and Fusarium tricinctum. All species were pathogenic when inoculated in erva-mate plants (Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil.). At the moment of sampling, information about the management of the erva-mate plantings was obtained and the similarity between the symptoms presented in erva-mate and in agronomic crops discussed, as well as hypotheses on the origin of the inoculum of Fusarium spp. that infected the erva-mate plantings.
