ABSTRACT The goal of this paper was to apply a method for the delineation of vegetation homogeneous zones (HZs) to map the profitability of cotton ( Gossypium sp.) using NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) data from RPA imagery. Two irrigated cotton crops, at the FAU (103 ha) and FRP farms (106 ha), located in the western region of Bahia State, Brazil, were studied. The NDVI images were classified into three HZs: “high”, “medium” and “low” plant vigor; using the k-means clustering method. In each HZ the yield was measured, and the profitability estimated. In FAU we found that the lower the HZ’s NDVI values, the lower its profitability, because there was profit in the “high vigor” HZ, of US$ 829.40 ha-1, and loss in the “low vigor” HZ, of about US$ ‒1.256.09 ha-1 (‒251.44% compared with the “high vigor”). In the FRP plantation, the lower the NDVI values, the lower the loss of the plantation, as there were losses in all HZs: from “high” to “low vigor” HZ, the percentage difference in profitability was ‒343.43%. Thus, the use of a low-cost modified near-infrared Canon S100 on an RPA enabled the mapping of crop profitability, aiding the search for the factors behind yield variability.

RESUMO A maioria dos estudos sobre mudanças no estoque de carbono orgânico do solo no bioma Cerrado está relacionada a dados coletados em Latossolos argilosos ou sob diferentes usos da terra, como se estivessem em equilíbrio. Objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos de tipos de preparo do solo e de sequência de culturas sobre o estoque de carbono orgânico do solo e a produtividade das culturas, em Latossolo arenoso, na Bahia. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Amostras de solo foram coletadas após cinco anos de monocultivo de algodão, soja e milho e de uso de grade de discos pesada e grade niveladora (preparo convencional), e de rotação das culturas do algodão, soja e milho com adubo verde ou planta de cobertura (plantio direto). Amostras adicionais foram coletadas em área não cultivada (Cerrado sensu stricto). Práticas de conservação do solo como o não revolvimento e rotação de culturas com planta de cobertura e adubo verde favoreceram o estoque de carbono orgânico do solo na camada de 0-40 cm, com os maiores valores atingindo 36,03 Mg ha−1. O acúmulo de carbono no solo sob preparo convencional e monocultivo de algodão, milho e soja foi menor do que sob plantio direto, que variou de 30,9 a 54,9 %, com o estoque no plantio direto aumentando à taxa anual de 2,36 Mg ha−1 durante cinco anos. O plantio direto, com a rotação soja-milho-algodão, combinada com planta de cobertura e adubo verde, aumentou a produtividade do algodão e da soja e acumulou carbono orgânico no solo arenoso.

ABSTRACT Most studies about soil organic carbon stock changes in the Cerrado (Brazilian Savanna) biome are either related to field data collected in clayey Ferralsols or different land uses, as if they were in equilibrium. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of tillage systems and crop sequences on the soil organic carbon stock and crop yield, in a sandy Ferralsol from Bahia, Brazil. The experimental design was randomized blocks, with four replicates. Soil samples were collected after fve years of cotton, soybean and maize monocropping under heavy disk harrow and leveling harrow (conventional tillage), and of crop rotation of cotton, soybean and maize with green manure or cover crop (no-tillage). Additional samples were collected from a non-cultivated site (Neotropical Savanna, Cerrado sensu stricto). Soil conservation practices such as no-tillage and crop rotation with cover crop and green manure favored the soil organic carbon stock at the 0-40 cm layer, with the highest values reaching 36.03 Mg ha−1. The accrued soil carbon stock under conventional tillage and monoculture of cotton, maize and soybean was lower than under no-tillage, which ranged from 30.9 to 54.9 %, with the soil organic carbon stock increasing at the annual rate of 2.36 Mg ha−1 during fve years. The no-tillage, with the soybean-maize-cotton rotation, in combination with cover crop and green manure, increased the cotton and soybean yields, with a simultaneous organic carbon accumulation in the sandy soil.

RESUMO Avaliar a qualidade dos solos sob diferentes culturas de cobertura ou sob diferentes sistemas de manejo torna-se essencial à sua conservação. Objetivou-se neste estudo avaliar um Oxisol cultivado com milho e algodão, após diferentes sucessões culturas e sob sistema plantio direto (SPD) e plantio convencional (PC), por meio de índice de qualidade do solo (IQS), utilizando como referência uma área de Cerrado nativo. O estudo foi realizado no município de Luís Eduardo Magalhães, Oeste da Bahia, Brasil. Amostras de solo com estrutura preservada e não preservada foram coletadas nas camadas de 0-0,05 m; 0,05-0,10 m e 0,10-0,20 m, para determinação da macroporosidade, densidade do solo, água disponível, teores de carbono orgânico total, argila dispersa em água e grau de floculação. As médias dos atributos mensurados nos tratamentos e o índice de qualidade do solo, que foi elaborado pelo método dos desvios dos valores dos atributos medidos nos tratamentos em relação à área de referência, seguido da normalização, foram comparados pelo teste de Duncan (p ≤ 0,05). O solo sob PC, em todos os tratamentos, teve a sua qualidade reduzida quando comparado com o SPD, além disso, o IQS utilizado foi sensível para detectar as alterações provocadas pelos sistemas de manejo e atribuir escores coerentes à qualidade do solo avaliado.

ABSTRACT Assessing soil quality under different cover crops or different management systems is essential to its conservation. This study aimed to evaluate an Oxisol cultivated with corn and cotton, after different crop successions and under no-tillage system (NTS) and conventional tillage system (CT), through the soil quality index (SQI), using an area of native Cerrado as reference. The study was carried out in the municipality of Luís Eduardo Magalhães, Western Bahia, Brazil. Soil samples with the preserved and non-preserved structure were collected in the layers of 0-0.05 m, 0.05-0.10 m, and 0.10-0.20 m to determine the macroporosity, the soil bulk density, the available water, the levels of total organic carbon, the clay dispersed in water, and the degree of flocculation. The averages of the attributes measured in the treatments and the soil quality index, which was elaborated by the method of deviations of the values of the attributes measured in the treatments concerning the reference area, followed by normalization, were compared by the Duncan test (p ≤ 0.05). The soil under CT, in all treatments, had its quality reduced when compared to the NTS. Also, the SQI used was sensitive to detect the changes caused by the management systems and assign consistent scores to the evaluated soil quality.

Abstract: BRS 500 B2RF is a high-yielding cotton cultivar with transgenic resistance to lepidopteran pests and tolerance to the herbicide glyphosate. Additionally, BRS 500 B2RF has resistance to Ramularia leaf spot and partial resistance to root-knot nematode. It represents an important contribution to sustainable cotton production in Brazil.

Abstract Cultivar BRS 433FL B2RF is a high-quality fiber upland cotton with high lint yield potential and resistance to several diseases. The introgressed transgenic events Bollgard II® and Roundup Ready Flex® confer enhanced resistance to lepidopteran pests and tolerance to the herbicide glyphosate, respectively. Fiber length exceeds 32.5 mm and fiber strength 33 gf tex-1.

Abstract ‘BRS 421’ and ‘BRS 423’ are high-oleic runner type peanut cultivars, adapted to the main peanut-producing areas in Brazil and partially resistant to spotted wilt. ‘BRS 421’ has a medium cycle and large seed size, while BRS ‘423’ has a short cycle and regular runner seed size.

Abstract BRS 372 and BRS 416 are cotton cultivars with high lint yield and genetic resistance to the main cotton diseases in Brazil, particularly to Ramularia Leaf Spot. They have stable yields, good fiber quality and can contribute to a sustainable cotton disease management in tropical environments.

Abstract BRS 425 is a high-oleic runner peanut cultivar related to wild ancestral parents, partially resistant to early and late leaf spot and spotted wilt. It is large-seeded and contains 46% oil. BRS 425 is adapted to the main peanut-producing regions of Brazil.

Abstract Transgenic cotton cultivars BRS 430 B2RF and BRS 432 B2RF, medium and late season respectively, were developed by EMBRAPA in partnership with Bahia Foundation, aiming to create a high-yielding germplasm. The Bt toxins Cry1Ac and Cry2Ab target lepidopteran pests and the CP4-EPSPS gene confers tolerance to the herbicide glyphosate.

RESUMO: A cercosporiose, causada pelo fungo Cercospora coffeicola, é uma das principais doenças que afeta o cafeeiro. Uma variação nos sintomas de cercosporiose foi encontrada no campo, levantando suspeitas da ocorrência de uma nova espécie. Considerando que informações sobre a interação cafeeiro-C. coffeicola ainda são limitadas, objetivou-se, neste trabalho, determinar diferenças no metabolismo oxidativo de plantas de cafeeiro, cultivar 'Mundo Novo', inoculadas com isolado proveniente de lesões de cercosporiose do tipo olho pardo (CML 2984) e isolado proveniente de lesões de cercosporiose do tipo negra (CML 2985). Foram determinadas a atividade das enzimas peroxidase (POX), catalase (CAT), superóxido dismutase (SOD), ascorbato peroxidase (APX) e fenilalanina amônia liase (PAL). As atividades das enzimas POX, APX e PAL aumentaram nas plantas inoculadas com ambos os isolados, quando comparadas com as plantas não inoculadas às 12 e 24 horas após inoculação (hai). A atividade da CAT aumentou nas plantas inoculadas com o isolado que causa sintomas de cercosporiose do tipo negra às 24 hai e, para ambos os isolados, às 48 hai. Plantas inoculadas com ambos os isolados demonstraram aumento na atividade da SOD somente às 48 hai. Este estudo mostrou que uma resposta antioxidante elevada foi observada quando as plantas foram inoculadas com os dois isolados de C. coffeicola . Ambos os isolados produziram lesões de cercosporiose do tipo comum, sugerindo que outros fatores que causam lesões de cercosporiose do tipo negra ainda necessitam ser investigados.

ABSTRACT: Brown eye spot (BE) caused by Cercospora coffeicola is the main disease of coffee crop. A variation in symptoms of BE has been reported in the field, raising suspicion of occurrence of new species. However, information about coffee- C. coffeicola interaction is still limited. This research aimed to determine the difference between antioxidant metabolism of coffee plants cultivar Mundo Novo inoculated with a strain isolated from a common BE lesion (CML 2984) and a strain isolated from a black BE lesion (CML 2985). The enzyme activity of peroxidase (POX), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) were determined. Activities of POX, APX, and PAL increased in plants inoculated with both strains compared to non-inoculated plants at 12 and 24 hours post inoculation (hpi). CAT activity increased in inoculated plants with black BE strain at 24 hpi and both strains at 48 hpi. The SOD activity only increased in inoculated plants with both strains at 48 hpi. These results show that an elevated antioxidant response was observed when the plants were challenged with both strains of C. coffeicola. Both strains produced lesions of the common type, suggesting that other factors lead to the development of black BE lesion type under field conditions and further investigation is needed.

A podridão-do-colmo e espiga, causada por Stenocarpella maydis, é responsável por graves perdas na produção de milho. O tratamento de sementes com fungicidas pode provocar danos ambientais. Por isso, este estudo objetivou avaliar o efeito de óleos essenciais extraídos de Cymbopogon winterianus (citronela), Thymus vulgaris (tomilho), Cymbopogon citratus (capim-limão), Corymbia citriodora (eucalipto), Cinnamomum zeylanicum (canela) e Syzygium aromaticum (cravo-da-Índia) sobre o desenvolvimento de S. maydis in vitro. Além disso, sementes de milho foram tratadas com esses óleos essenciais para determinar seus possíveis modos de ação e efeitos. Os óleos de S. aromaticum, C. zeylanicum e T. vulgaris inibiram o desenvolvimento do fungo nas concentrações maiores que 0,025%. Os óleos de S. aromaticum e C. zeylanicum mostraram taxas de germinação de sementes de 89,0% e 84,5%, as quais foram maiores que a testemunha. Esses óleos reduziram a incidência do patógeno nas sementes para 39,0% e 28%, respectivamente. Além disso, esses óleos, bem como o óleo de T. vulgaris, produziram menor redução do estande de milho. O exame de microscopia eletrônica de varredura revelou que os óleos de S. aromaticum and T. vulgaris agiram diretamente sobre os conídios, impedindo a germinação. Os resultados deste trabalho sugerem que os óleos de S. aromaticum, C. zeylanicum e T. vulgaris são alternativas potenciais para o tratamento de sementes de milho no controle de S. maydis.

Stem and ear rot caused by Stenocarpella maydis are responsible for severe losses in maize production. Treatment of seeds with fungicides may induce environmental damage. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of essential oils extracted from Cymbopogon winterianus, Thymus vulgaris, Cymbopogon citratus, Corymbia citriodora, Cinnamomum zeylanicum, and Syzygium aromaticum on the development of in vitro S. maydis. In addition, maize seeds were treated with these essential oils to determine their possible mode of action and effects. The oils from S. aromaticum, C. zeylanicum, and T. vulgaris inhibited fungal development at concentrations higher than 0.025%. The oils from S. aromaticum and C. zeylanicum showed seed germination rates of 89.0% and 84.5%, which were higher than that of the control. The oils from S. aromaticum and C. zeylanicum reduced the pathogen incidence in the seeds to 39.0% and 28.0%, respectively. Further, these oils as well as that from T. vulgaris produced lower reduction of maize stand. Scanning electron microscopy examination revealed that essential oils from S. aromaticum and T. vulgaris acted directly on the conidia, impeding germination. The findings suggest that the oils from S. aromaticum, C. zeylanicum, and T. vulgaris are potential alternatives for maize seed treatment in the control of S. maydis.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi selecionar e avaliar o potencial de óleos essenciais (OEs) e leite de vaca integral (LVI) no controle do oídio da soja e determinar as concentrações mais efetivas destes produtos na redução da severidade dessa doença. Foram realizados três experimentos: um experimento em casa de vegetação para avaliação e seleção dos produtos mais efetivos na redução da severidade do oídio da soja; um experimento para a verificação do efeito do LVI e OEs de citronela, capim-limão, eucalipto, canela e árvore-de-chá sobre o patógeno, por meio da análise ultraestrutural de folíolos infectados por Erysiphe diffusa em microscópio eletrônico de varredura (MEV) e de luz (ML); e finalmente um experimento em casa de vegetação, utilizando os produtos mais ativos, em diferentes concentrações, com o propósito de determinar as concentrações efetivas na redução da severidade da doença. Os tratamentos LVI (100mL L-1) e OEs de citronela, capim-limão e eucalipto a 1.0mL L-1, apresentaram controle de 67 a 74% da doença. Por meio da análise ultraestrutural em MEV e ML, foi evidenciado um efeito direto sobre as estruturas de E. diffusa, por parte de todos os produtos naturais testados. Concentrações de 1.5mL L-1, para os OEs de citronela, capim-limão e eucalipto e de 180mL L-¹ para o LVI foram mais efetivas contra E. difusa em soja.

This research aimed to evaluate the potential of essential oils (EOs) and cow's whole milk (CWM) in order to control soybean powdery mildew and to estimate the most effective concentrations of these natural products in reducing the disease severity on soybean plants. Three experiments were carried out: The first experiment evaluated and selected the most effective treatments to reduce the severity of soybean powdery mildew under greenhouse conditions; the second experiment evaluated the effect of CWM and EOs of citronella, lemongrass, eucalyptus, cinnamon and tea tree on the pathogen through the ultrastructure analysis of soybean leaflets infected by Erysiphe diffusa using the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and light microscope (LM) technology. In the third experiment, the most effective products were tested at several concentrations in order to define the most effective concentrations to reduce disease severity under greenhouse conditions. The treatments CWM (100mL L-1) and EOs of citronella, lemongrass and eucalyptus (1.0mL L-1), reduced the disease severity from 67 to 74%. Direct effects from all natural products tested on the structures of E. diffusa were demonstrated through the SEM and LM analysis. Concentrations at 1.5mL L-1 for EOs of citronella, lemongrass and eucalyptus and also at 180mL L-1 for the treatment CWM were the most effective against E. diffusa on soybean.

A ferrugem e a cercosporiose são as principais doenças de cafeeiro. Os prejuízos se devem a intensa desfolha das plantas que têm sua produção e longevidade reduzidas. A cercosporiose também ocorre nos frutos, com reflexos negativos na qualidade da bebida. Alguns óleos essenciais têm apresentado resultados promissores no controle de doenças em plantas, em alternativa ao uso de fungicidas. Neste trabalho, objetivou-se avaliar o óleo essencial de citronela no controle da ferrugem e cercosporiose e na ativação de respostas de defesa em cafeeiro. Plantas com 12 meses foram pulverizadas com o óleo de citronela 1.000 µL L-1, acibenzolar-S-metil 200 mg L-1 e fungicida tebuconazole 200 mg L-1 e inoculadas com Hemileia vastatrix e Cercospora coffeicola sete dias após. Repetiu-se a aplicação após 30 dias. Plantas com cinco meses foram pulverizadas com os mesmos tratamentos para avaliar as respostas de defesa induzidas. O óleo de citronela controlou a ferrugem e a cercosporiose com eficácias de 47.2% e 29,7%, respectivamente, enquanto tebuconazole apresentou controles de 96,5% e 90,5%, respectivamente. Acibenzolar-S-metil reduziram em 55,9% a cercosporiose da ferrugem e não apresentou controle significativo da ferrugem. O óleo de citronela aumentou as atividades de peroxidase e quitinase em mudas de cafeeiro 336 e; 24 e 336 horas após pulverização, respectivamente. Acibenzolar-S-metil aumentou as atividades de peroxidase, quitinase e β-1,3-glucanase 192, 288 e 336 e; 24 e; 240 horas após pulverização, respectivamente. Os tratamentos não promoveram aumento de fenóis, mas aumento significativo no teor de lignina foi observado em plantas pulverizadas com óleo de citronela.

The rust and brown eye spot are the main coffee diseases. The losses are due to intense defoliation of plants, which has reduced its production and longevity. The brown eye spot also occurs in fruits, with negative effects on the beverage quality. Some essential oils have presented promising results in the control of plant diseases, as an alternative to the use of fungicides. The objective of this study was to evaluate citronella essential oil in the control of rust and brown eye spot and in the activation of coffee plants defense responses. Twelve-month-old plants were sprayed with citronella oil 1000 µL L-1, acibenzolar-S-methyl 200 mg L-1 and tebuconazole fungicide 200 mg L-1. Plants were inoculated with Hemileia vastatrix and Cercospora coffeicola seven days later. The application was repeated after 30 days. Plants with five months were sprayed with the same treatments to assess the induced defense responses. Citronella oil controlled rust and brown eye spot with efficiencies of 47.2% and 29.7%, respectively, while tebuconazole presented control of 96.5% and 90.5%, respectively. Acibenzolar-S-methyl reduced brown eye spot by 55.9% and showed no significant control of rust. Citronella oil increased peroxidase and chitinase activities in five months coffee plants 336, and 24 and 336 hours after spraying, respectively. Acibenzolar-S-methyl increased peroxidase, chitinase and ββ-1,3-glucanase activities 192, 288 and 336; 24 and; 240 hours after spraying, respectively. The treatments did not increase accumulation of phenols, but a significant increase in lignin was observed in plants sprayed with citronella oil.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de óleos essenciais (OEs) no crescimento de Xanthomonas vesicatoria, na morfologia e na ultraestrutura bacteriana, e na severidade da mancha-bacteriana do tomateiro. OEs de citronela, cravo-da-índia, canela, capim-limão, eucalipto, tomilho e árvore-de-chá foram avaliados in vitro nas concentrações de 0,1, 1,0, 10 e 100% em leite em pó a 1,0%. O efeito dos OEs, a 0,1%, na severidade da mancha-bacteriana do tomateiro foram avaliados em plantas de tomateiro em casa de vegetação. Os efeitos dos óleos de citronela, capim-limão, cravo-da-índia e árvore-de-chá, a 0,1%, nas células de X. vesicatoria foram avaliados por meio de microscopia eletrônica de transmissão. Todos os OEs apresentaram efeito tóxico direto sobre as bactérias na concentração de 10% in vitro. Em casa de vegetação, os OEs de cravo-da-índia, citronela, árvore-de-chá e capim-limão reduziram a severidade da doença. Os OEs de cravo-da-índia e árvore-de-chá, e o sulfato de estreptomicina promoveram perda de material eletro-denso e alterações no citoplasma, enquanto o OE de árvore-de-chá promoveu vacuolização do citoplasma, e os de citronela, capim-limão, cravo-da-índia e árvore-de-chá causaram danos à parede celular bacteriana. Os OEs, na concentração de 0,1%, reduzem a severidade da doença.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of plant essential oils (EOs) on the growth of Xanthomonas vesicatoria, on bacterial morphology and ultrastructure, and on the severity of tomato bacterial spot. EOs from citronella, clove, cinnamon, lemongrass, eucalyptus, thyme, and tea tree were evaluated in vitro at concentrations of 0.1, 1.0, 10, and 100% in 1.0% powdered milk. The effect of EOs, at 0.1%, on the severity of tomato bacterial spot was evaluated in tomato seedlings under greenhouse conditions. The effects of citronella, lemongrass, clove, and tea tree EOs, at 0.1%, on X. vesicatoria cells were evaluated by transmission electron microscopy. All EOs showed direct toxic effect on the bacteria at a 10%-concentration in vitro. Under greenhouse conditions, the EOs of clove, citronella, tea tree, and lemongrass reduced disease severity. EOs of clove and tea tree, and streptomycin sulfate promoted loss of electron-dense material and alterations in the cytoplasm, whereas EO of tea tree promoted cytoplasm vacuolation, and those of citronella, lemongrass, clove, and tea tree caused damage to the bacterial cell wall. The EOs at a concentration of 0.1% reduce the severity of the disease.

A ferrugem é considerada a doença de maior importância no cafeeiro, pois causa acentuada desfolha nas plantas e, consequentemente, redução na produtividade. Este trabalho avaliou o efeito in vitro de óleos essenciais de canela, citronela, capim-limão, cravo-da-índia, árvore-de-chá, tomilho, nim e eucalipto na germinação de urediniósporos de Hemileia vastatrix; a eficácia desses óleos no controle da ferrugem em mudas de cafeeiro das cultivares Catucaí 2SL, Catuaí IAC 62 e Mundo Novo 379/19 em casa de vegetação; e o efeito dos óleos mais promissores sobre urediniósporos de H. vastatrix por meio de microscopia eletrônica de transmissão (MET). Todos os óleos essenciais inibiram a germinação dos urediniósporos com o aumento das concentrações. Todos os óleos promoveram controle parcial da doença em casa de vegetação. No entanto, os óleos de tomilho, cravo-da-índia e citronela, na dose de 1000 µL L-1, foram os mais eficazes no controle da doença nas cultivares Catucaí 2SL, Catuaí IAC 62 e Mundo Novo 379/19, respectivamente. Nas imagens geradas em MET, observou-se que urediniósporos expostos aos óleos de cravo-da-índia, citronela e tomilho apresentaram desorganização citoplasmática e vacuolização celular, sendo esta mais pronunciada em urediniósporos expostos ao óleo de citronela. Os óleos de tomilho, cravo-da-índia e citronela são promissores no controle da ferrugem em cafeeiro.

Rust is considered the most important disease in coffee because it causes severe defoliation in plants and, consequently, reduction in productivity. This study evaluated the in vitro effect of essential oils of cinnamon, citronella, lemongrass, clove, tea tree, thyme, neem and eucalyptus on the germination of urediniospores of Hemileia vastatrix; the effectiveness of these oils to control rust on seedlings of coffee cultivars Catucaí 2SL, Catuaí IAC 62 and Mundo Novo 379/19 in the greenhouse; and the effect of more promising oils on urediniospores of H. vastatrix by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). All the essential oils inhibited the germination of urediniospores with increasing concentrations. All oils promoted partial control of the disease in the greenhouse. However, the oils of thyme, clove and citronella, at a concentration of 1000 µL L-1, were most effective in controlling the disease on cultivars Catucaí 2SL, Catuaí IAC 62 and Mundo Novo 379/19, respectively. The images generated in TEM showed that urediniospores exposed to oils of clove, citronella and thyme promoted cellular disorganization and cytoplasmic vacuolization, which was more pronounced in urediniospores exposed to citronella oil. The oils of thyme, clove and citronella are promising for the control of rust in coffee.
