ABSTRACT The current study aims to characterize the soil seed banks in a forest under restoration and in a seasonal semideciduous forest remnant, as well as to quantitatively and qualitatively compare them in order to evaluate the seed bank potential to influence the restoration process. In total, 60 samples of soil seed banks were collected in two adjacent forests (30 in a 2.18-ha forest undergoing restoration process based on the planting of seedlings belonging to different tree species, after the forest was subjected to bauxite mining activity; and 30 in a 5.30-ha preserved forest fragment). The soil seed bank of the forest undergoing restoration recorded higher density of emerged seedlings than that of the reference ecosystem. Although the shrub-tree species in the investigated forests lacked floristic similarity, the highly similar dispersal syndrome distribution and the successional category of shrub-tree species in them have indicated that both forests underwent ecological processes. Therefore, the restoration process implemented in the mined area has successfully recovered the soil seed bank after a few years.

Resumo O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a serapilheira acumulada em dois ambientes, uma floresta em processo de restauração, após a mineração de bauxita, e um ecossistema de referência (remanescente de floresta secundária em estágio médio de sucessão), e verificar a relação de variáveis ambientais (abertura de dossel, compactação do solo, regeneração natural) com o acúmulo de serapilheira em ambas florestas. Foram alocadas 30 parcelas de 2 × 2 m em cada uma das duas florestas. No centro de cada parcela coletou-se todo o material orgânico contido em amostras de 0,5 × 0,5 m para posterior obtenção da massa seca. Há dissimilaridade entre as duas florestas, em relação ao estoque de serapilheira e demais variáveis ambientais avaliadas. A floresta em restauração apresentou menor acúmulo de serapilheira que o ecossistema de referência. O maior acúmulo de serapilheira, em ambas florestas, acontece em locais com maior quantidade de indivíduos do estrato de regeneração natural e em locais que apresentam solos menos compactados.

Abstract The present study had as objective to evaluate the accumulated litter in two environments, a forest under restoration, after the bauxite mining, and a reference ecosystem (remaining secondary forest in a midsuccessional stage), and investigate the relationship between environmental variables (canopy opening, soil compaction, natural regeneration) and litter accumulation in both forests. Thirty plots of 2 × 2 m in each forest were allocated. In the center of each plot, all organic material contained in samples of 0.5 × 0.5 m was collected to obtain the dry mass. There is dissimilarity between the two forests, in relation to the litter stock and other environmental variables evaluated. The forest in restoration presents less litter accumulation than the reference ecosystem. The largest litter accumulation in both forests occurs in sites with higher number of individuals in the natural regeneration layer and in sites with lower soil compaction.

RESUMO O método ponto de escuta foi utilizado com o objetivo de avaliar a comunidade de aves em um pequeno trecho de 1 ha de floresta restaurada com mais de 40 anos de implantação, no município de Viçosa - MG. Um total de 20 pontos foi amostrado no período reprodutivo das aves no ano de 2011. Foram registrados 31 espécies de aves e 160 contatos, sendo a maioria das espécies típicas da Floresta Estacional Semidecidual e cinco espécies endêmicas do Bioma Mata Atlântica. No presente estudo, a presença de aves consumidora de frutos e de aves insetívoras de sub-bosque que apresentam pouca tolerância a ambientes abertos e de forte insolação, sugere a boa qualidade do habitat amostrado, confirmando que a floresta restaurada se encontra em estádio avançado de sucessão, conforme estudos anteriores. Os resultados do presente estudo também demonstram que mesmo em uma área pequena e com poucos dias de amostragens foi possível obter uma rápida caracterização da comunidade de aves e, a partir dessa composição, relacioná-la com as condições do habitat, permitindo uma avaliação segura do sucesso de um projeto de restauração florestal.

ABSTRACT The point-counts method was used to evaluate the bird community in a small patch of forest (1 ha) restored through reforestation, with more than 40 years of deployment, in Viçosa, MG state. In total, 20 points were sampled in the reproductive period of the birds, during 2011. A total of 31 bird species and 160 contacts were recorded, and all species were identified as typical from a semi-deciduous forest and included five endemic species of the Atlantic forest biome. In the present study, the presence of frugivorous and insectivorous birds in the understory with little tolerance for open environments and strong insolation, suggests the good quality of the sampled habitat, confirming that the restored forest is in an advanced stage of succession. The results of this study also demonstrate that even in a small area, and with a few days of sampling, it is possible to obtain a rapid characterization of the bird community, being possible to associate it to the habitat conditions and allowing a safe evaluation of the success of a forest restoration project.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar o banco de sementes do solo em mina de bauxita restaurada dez anos após implantação do projeto de restauração. O estudo foi realizado em uma área onde ocorreu exploração de bauxita e posterior restauração florestal. Foram coletadas 40 amostras de solo superficial (0,25 × 0,30 × 0,05 m) para avaliação do banco de sementes pelo método de germinação em casa de sombra durante seis meses. Emergiram 2.489 plântulas, pertencentes a 69 espécies e 23 famílias botânicas, com densidade de 830 propágulos m–2. As famílias com maior densidade foram Poaceae e Cannabaceae. Houve maior proporção de espécies e indivíduos do grupo ecológico pioneiras e da síndrome de dispersão zoocórica. Não houve semelhança florística entre as espécies do plantio e o banco de sementes. Os resultados mostram que o banco de sementes pode fornecer aporte necessário à recuperação do ambiente após perturbações.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to characterize the soil seed bank in a restored bauxite mine ten years after the restoration project. The study was conducted in a bauxite-exploited mine, which was restored with trees. We collected 40 samples of surface soil (0.25 × 0.30 × 0.05 m) to evaluate soil seed bank by germination method in shade house for six months. Results showed that 2,489 seedlings emerged, belonging to 69 species and 23 botanical families, with a density of 830 seedlings m–2. Poaceae and Cannabaceae were the families with higher density. A larger number of species and individuals were pioneer and zoochoric species. The soil seed bank of the restored area showed no difference in plant density and floristic composition between the border and the core study area. There was no floristic similarity between planted species and the seed bank. Results showed that the seed bank was able to supply species and individuals upon germination.

RESUMO A Região do Manso, localizada a 785 m de altitude no município de Antônio Dias, leste de Minas Gerais (19°41'15''S, 42°48'45''W), está no domínio Atlântico na formação da floresta estacional semidecídua montana. No inventário das Mimosoideae ocorrentes na região, foram encontrados nove táxons que neste trabalho são analisados quanto aos limites de distribuição geográfica e somente os arbóreos são avaliados como indicadores das relações florísticas entre a região do Manso e outras áreas de Floresta Atlântica do Sudeste brasileiro. São eles: Senegalia martiusiana (Steud.) Seigler & Ebingler, Anadenanthera colubrina (Vell.) Brenan var. cebil (Griseb.) Altschul, Anadenanthera peregrina (L.) Speg, Inga vera subsp. affinis (DC.) T.D. Penn., Mimosa debilis Humb. & Bonpl. ex Willd. var. debilis, Mimosa pellita Humb. & Bonpl. ex Willd. var. pellita, Piptadenia gonoacantha (Mart.) J.F. Macbr., Plathymenia reticulata Benth. e Stryphnodendron polyphyllum Mart. Cinco padrões de distribuição geográfica foram estabelecidos: 1. Anfiatlântico (1sp.); 2. Neotropical (1sp.); 3. América do Sul Ocidental-Centro-Oriental (4spp.); 4. Brasil Centro-Oriental (2spp.); 5. Brasil Atlântico Nordeste-Sudeste (1sp.). Os táxons quanto à preferência de habitat, foram tratados como elementos florísticos generalistas (100%) e especialistas (0%) do domínio Atlântico. Os resultados mostram maior similaridade entre o Manso e trechos de floresta situados nas altas elevações. Existem similaridades florísticas entre as florestas ombrófila densa e estacionais semidecíduas do sudeste, apoiando a proposição de origem comum dessas fitofisionomias.

ABSTRACT Manso's region is located at 785m of altitude in Antônio Dias town, east of Minas Gerais State, Brazil, which is in the Atlantic domain in a formation of Seasonal Semideciduous Montane Forest. In the inventory of Mimosoideae of that region, it wase found nine taxa which are analyzed regarding the limits of geographic distribution and only the arboreal are evaluated as floristic relation indicators between the region of Manso and other areas of southeastern Brazilian Atlantic forest. They are: Senegalia martiusiana (Steud.) Seigler & Ebingler, Anadenanthera colubrina (Vell.) Brenan var. cebil (Griseb.) Altschul, Anadenanthera peregrina (L.) Speg, Inga vera subsp. affinis (DC.) T.D. Penn., Mimosa debilis Humb. & Bonpl. ex Willd. var. debilis, Mimosa pellita Humb. & Bonpl. ex Willd. var. pellita, Piptadenia gonoacantha (Mart.) J.F. Macbr., Plathymenia reticulata Benth. and Stryphnodendron polyphyllum Mart. Five geographical distribution standards had been established: 1. Anfiatlântico (1sp.); 2. Neotropical (1sp.); 3. South America Occidental-Center-Oriental (4spp.); 4. Brazil Center-Oriental (2spp.); 5. Atlantic Brazil Northeast-Southeast (1sp.). The taxa according to their preference habitat were labelled as floristic general elements (100%) and specialist elements (0%) of the Atlantic domain. The results show greater similarity between Manso and the forest stretches located in high elevations. There are floristic similarities between the dense mountain rain and seasonal semideciduous southeastern forest, supporting the proposal of common origin of these phytophysiognomies.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as mudas de espécies arbóreas plantadas para fins de restauração florestal em uma área pós-mineração de bauxita. Foram alocadas 20 parcelas de 9 × 6 m nas quais foram mensurados diâmetro ao nível do solo, altura e diâmetro da copa das mudas plantadas. Também foram calculados a porcentagem de mortalidade e o valor de importância (VI) das espécies. Foram registrados 540 indivíduos arbóreos vivos (22,9% de mortalidade) e 45 espécies. As espécies com maiores VIs foram Solanum lycocarpum (14,7%) e Schinus terebinthifolius (10,8%). S. terebinthifolius, S. lycocarpum e Joannesia princeps contribuíram com 30,4% de cobertura de copa. A altura média das mudas plantadas variou de 0,40 m a 3,90 m. As espécies utilizadas na restauração da área minerada proporcionaram benefícios ecológicos para a área, como cobertura do solo, atenuando processos erosivos e a invasão por gramíneas exóticas agressivas.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the seedlings of tree species planted for forest restoration in a bauxite mining. We allocated twenty plots of 9 × 6 m and diameter at ground level, height and canopy diameter of planted seedlings. Also were calculated the mortality percentage and the importance value (VI) species. We recorded 540 alive individuals (22.86% mortality) and 45 species. The species with the highest VIs were Solanum lycocarpum (14.7%) and Schinus terebinthifolius (10.8%). S. terebinthifolius, S. lycocarpum and Joannesia princeps, contributed 30.4% canopy cover. Average height of seedlings planted ranged from 0.4 m to 3.9 m. The species used in the restoration of the mined area provided ecological benefits to the area, such as soil coverage, thus ameliorating erosion and invasion of aggressive exotic grasses.

RESUMO Neste trabalho, objetivou-se quantificar e comparar a serapilheira acumulada em uma floresta em restauração (FR) há 23 anos com uma Floresta Ombrófila Densa primária (FP) adjacente. Foram alocadas 30 parcelas permanentes de 3 x 3 m em cada área. No centro de cada parcela foi coletada a serapilheira (0,50 x 0,50 x 0,05 m). O material foi seco em estufa a 70 °C, durante 48 h, e mensurada a massa de matéria seca. Foi calculada a matriz de correlação de Pearson entre os valores de serapilheira acumulada e as variáveis ambientais índice de área de planta (IAP), compactação do solo e densidade de indivíduos arbustivo-arbóreos do estrato de regeneração natural. Os valores médios encontrados (FR = 3.177 ± 937 kg.ha-1; FP = 4.411 ± 1.389 kg.ha-1) de serapilheira acumulada apresentaram diferença significativa entre as duas áreas estudadas (p < 0,001). A serapilheira acumulada apresentou correlação significativa (p < 0,001) com a compactação do solo e índice de área de planta.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to quantify and compare the accumulated litter at a forest restoration (FR) for 23 years with a primary Tropical Rain Forest (FP). Thirty permanent plots of 3 x 3 m were placed in each area. In the center of each plot the litter (0,50 x 0,50 x 0,05 m) was collected. The material was dried at 70 °C for 48 hours and the dry mass was measured. The matrix of Pearson correlation between the values of accumulated litter and environmental variables plant area index (PAI), soil compaction and density of shrub and tree individuals of natural regeneration layer were calculated. The mean values found (FR = 3,177 ± 937 kg.ha-1; FP = 4,411 ± 1,389 kg.ha-1) of accumulated litter showed significant difference between the two study areas (p <0.001). The accumulated litter showed significant correlation (p <0.001) with soil compaction and plant area index.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito da transposição de serapilheira na semeadura direta como metodologia de restauração ecológica de áreas degradadas. O estudo foi realizado no Viveiro de Pesquisas da Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV), em canteiros a céu aberto, com delineamento inteiramente casualizado. Compararam-se três tratamentos distintos, com cinco repetições cada, deixando-se também cinco parcelas como controle. Nas parcelas controle, apenas removeu-se o solo superficial do canteiro. Os demais tratamentos consistiram da semeadura direta de quatro espécies nativas, sendo duas pioneiras (Senna macranthera e Colubrina glandulosa) e duas não pioneiras (Tabebuia serratifolia e Cedrela fissilis). O tratamento 1 constituiu de apenas semeadura direta, o tratamento 2 de semeadura direta com posterior transposição de serapilheira e o tratamento 3 foi constituído de transposição de serapilheira com posterior semeadura direta. A serapilheira foi transposta de um fragmento de Floresta Estacional Semidecidual secundária localizado no Campus da UFV. Após dois anos, o tratamento 2 apresentou maior porcentagem de emergência de plântulas. No tratamento 1 foram encontrados 36 indivíduos arbóreos, oriundos apenas da semeadura. No tratamento 2 haviam 312 indivíduos arbóreos e no tratamento 3, 140, ambos com indivíduos oriundos da semeadura e serapilheira transposta. A transposição da serapilheira influenciou a emergência e estabelecimento das plântulas. S. macranthera e C. glandulosa foram as espécies com maior porcentagem de emergência e, portanto, apresentaram potencial para uso em projetos de restauração ecológica através de semeadura direta.

ABSTRACT of ecological restoration of degraded areas. The study was conducted in the Nursery Research at Federal University of Viçosa (UFV) in the open construction site, with a completely randomized design. We compared three different treatments with five replicates each, leaving also five plots as control. For the control plots only the topsoil from the construction site was removed. The other treatments consisted of direct sowing of four native species, two pioneers (Senna macranthera and Colubrina glandulosa) and two non-pioneer (Tabebuia serratifolia and Cedrela fissilis). Treatment 1 consisted of only direct sowing, treatment 2 of direct sowing with subsequent transposition of litter and treatment 3 of transposition of litter with subsequent direct sowing. The litter has been transposed from a fragment of secondary semi deciduous forest located on the campus of UFV. After two years, treatment 2 had a higher percentage of emergency of seedlings. In treatment 1 36 individual trees were found, only from sowing. In treatment 2, there were 312 individual trees and in treatment 3, 140 individuals, both with individuals from sowing and litter transposed. The transposition of litter influenced seed emergency and plant establishment. S. macranthera and C. glandulosa were the species with the highest percentage of emergency and, therefore, have potential for use in ecological restoration projects through direct sowing.

Este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar o banco de sementes do solo e a serapilheira acumulada em uma floresta restaurada por meio de plantio, com 40 anos, em Viçosa, MG. Foram alocadas 16 parcelas contíguas de 25 x 25 m, cobrindo toda a área da floresta (1 ha). Em cada parcela, foram coletadas cinco amostras de solo superficial (0,30 x 0,30 x 0,05 m) para avaliação do banco de sementes pelo método de germinação e uma amostra de 1,0 m² de serapilheira para avaliação da serapilheira acumulada. Foi realizada a classificação dos indivíduos e espécies de plântulas registrados do banco de sementes quanto à categoria sucessional, síndrome de dispersão e hábito de vida. Foram registradas 5.555 plântulas pertencentes a 32 famílias e 93 espécies e um morfotipo que reuniu todas as trepadeiras. Registrou-se o predomínio de síndrome de dispersão zoocórica e, quanto ao hábito de vida, maior percentual de ervas, em nível de espécie (48,6%) e de indivíduo (44,8%). Entre as espécies arbustiva-arbóreas, observou-se maior percentual da categoria sucessional pioneira, em nível de espécie (75,1%) e de indivíduo (85,1%). A serapilheira média acumulada foi de 3.432 kg ha-1, com a fração foliar representando 65% e correlação significativa com a área basal (p = 0,031; R² = 0,29) do estrato arbóreo. Os resultados indicam que o banco de sementes do solo da floresta restaurada, após 40 anos de sua implantação se assemelha, quanto as relações ecológicas, às áreas de floresta estacional semidecidual na mesma região e a outras áreas restauradas que também foram utilizados plantio de mudas.

This study aimed to evaluate the soil seed bank and accumulated litter in a restored forest through planting, aged 40, in Viçosa, MG. We allocated 16 contiguous plots of 25 x 25 m, covering the entire forest area (1 ha). In each plot, we collected five samples of surface soil (0.30 x 0.30 x 0.05 m) to evaluate the seed bank by germination method and a sample of 1.0 m² litter for evaluation of accumulated litter. We performed the classification of individuals and species of seedlings of the seed bank as for successional category, dispersion syndrome and life form. 5,555 seedlings were recorded, belonging to 32 families and 93 species and morphotype which grouped all the vines. We recorded the predominance of zoochoric dispersion syndrome and, as for life form, a higher percentage of herbs, at the species level (48.6%) and individuals (44.8%). Among the shrub-arboreal species, we observed a higher percentage of successional category pioneer, species level (75.1%) and individuals (85.1%). The accumulated litter average was of 3,432 kg ha-1, with the leaf fraction representing 65% and significant correlation with basal area (p = 0.031, R² = 0.29) of the tree stratum. The results indicate that the soil seed bank of forest restored after 40 years of its implementation is similar, as for ecological relations, to the areas of stational semidecidual forest in the same region and other restored areas that were also used for planting seedlings.

Este estudo foi realizado na Mata da Praça de Esportes, situada no Campus da UFV, em Viçosa, MG, com 10,65 ha em regeneração há 75 anos. Foram estabelecidos quatro transectos paralelos de 3 x 50 m, espaçados por 3 m e subdivididos em 10 parcelas de 3 x 5 m cada. A amostragem do estrato de regeneração natural incluiu todos os indivíduos com altura ≥ 0,3 m e com DAP < 5 cm. Calcularam-se os parâmetros fitossociológicos, e realizou-se a classificação quanto à classe sucessional e à síndrome de dispersão. Comparou-se a composição florística entre a área estudada e diversos levantamentos florísticos de regeneração na região de Viçosa, MG, por meio de análise de agrupamento. Foram obtidas 30 famílias e 84 espécies. As espécies mais importantes foram Coffea arabica, Siparuna guianensis, Psychotria sessilis e Erythroxylum pelleterianum. Houve predomínio da classe sucessional secundária tardia (49,3% dos indivíduos) e da síndrome de dispersão zoocórica (91,6% dos indivíduos). Não houve similaridade florística entre o trecho de floresta estudada e os demais fragmentos florestais da região. A predominância da síndrome de dispersão zoocórica no estrato de regeneração natural é fator importante para a continuidade da manutenção de animais frugívoros na área. A riqueza florística e a abundância de espécies secundárias tardias são fortes indicativos de que o ambiente estudado está oferecendo condições ecológicas adequadas ao desenvolvimento dessas espécies, permitindo, assim, o avanço da sucessão secundária.

The present study was carried out at Praça de Esportes Forest, located on the campus of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Viçosa, Minas Gerais State. The fragment consists of a 10.65 ha forest in regeneration for 75 years. Four parallel transects mesuring 3 x 50 m, spaced 3 m, and divided into 10 plots of 3 x 5 m each were set for analysis. Sampling of natural regeneration layer included all individuals with height ≥0.3 m and DBH < 5 cm. We calculated the phytosociological parameters and classified the fragments into successional class and dispersion syndrome. The floristic composition was compared with several studies of regeneration in Viçosa, through cluster analysis. After analysis, we observed the occurrence of 30 families and 84 species, which the most important were Coffea arabica, Siparuna guianensis, Psychotria sessilisandErythroxylum pelleterianum. The late secondary successional class was the most representative (49.3% of individuals), and 91.6% of individuals presented dispersion syndrome zoochorous. No floristic similarity was observed between the studied area and other forest fragments of the region. The predominance of dispersion syndrome zoochorous in natural regeneration is an important factor to the continued maintenance of frugivorous in the area. The floristic richness and abundance of late secondary species are strong indications that the environment studied is offering ecological conditions suitable for the development of these species, thus allowing the advancement of secondary succession.

The objective of the present study was to verify if, in floristic terms of natural regeneration, a restored bauxite mine in southeast Brazil can be considered successfully restored. Forty plots of 3.0 x 3.0 m were allocated in the area. All shrubs and trees with height ≥ 0.30 m and diameter at 1.30 m height (DBH) ≤ 5.0 cm were identified and classified into successional categories and dispersal syndromes; DSL (diameter at soil level) and height were measured. We use the canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) to verify the correlations between environmental variables (canopy openness, litter decomposition, soil penetration resistance) and vegetation. We found 705 individuals, 80 species and 30 families. The families with the highest species richness were Fabaceae and Melastomataceae. The specie with the highest importance value (IV) was Myrcia splendens. Most species are the early secondary successional category and the zoochoric dispersion syndrome. CCA ordination indicates the formation of a group of species associated with less soil compaction and with low litter decomposition rate and the formation of another group associated with intermediate values of soil penetration resistance and litter decomposition rate. The results obtained after ten years of implementation of the restoration project, in floristic terms, are suitable. In other words, the area can be considered as successfully restored.

El objetivo del presente estudio fue verificar si, en términos florísticos de la regeneración natural, una mina de bauxita restaurada en el sureste de Brasil puede considerarse restaurada con éxito. En el área, se distribuyeron 40 parcelas de 3,0 x 3,0 m, donde todos los arbustos y los árboles con altura ≥ 0,30 m y diámetro a 1,30 m de altura (DAP) ≤ 5,0 cm fueron identificados, medido el diámetro a nivel del suelo y la altura, y clasificados en categoría sucesional y dispersión de semillas. Se aplicó análisis de correspondencia canónica (CCA) para verificar las correlaciones entre variables ambientales y vegetación. Se encontraron 705 individuos, 80 especies y 30 familias. Las familias con mayor riqueza de especies fueron Fabaceae y Melastomataceae, y la especie con el mayor valor de importancia fue Myrcia splendens. La mayoría de las especies fueron de la categoría de sucesión secundaria inicial y con dispersión de semillas por zoocoría. Las variables ambientales mostraron los valores: constante de descomposición de la hojarasca (k) (0,0033 ± 0,0017); apertura del dosel (8,1 ± 6,5 %); resistencia a la penetración (9,3 ± 4,6 MPa). La ordenación CCA indicó la formación de un grupo de especies asociadas con menos compactación del suelo y con una baja tasa de descomposición de la hojarasca, y la formación de otro grupo asociado con valores intermedios de resistencia a la penetración y la descomposición de la hojarasca. Los resultados obtenidos después de 10 años de ejecución del proyecto de restauración, en términos florísticos, son adecuados. Se puede considerar que el área fue restaurada con éxito.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the floristic composition, richness, and diversity of the upper and lower strata of a stretch of mixed rain forest near the city of Itaberá, in southeastern Brazil. We also investigated the differences between this conservation area and other stretches of mixed rain forest in southern and southeastern Brazil, as well as other nearby forest formations, in terms of their floristic relationships. For our survey of the upper stratum (diameter at breast height [DBH] > 15 cm), we established 50 permanent plots of 10 × 20 m. Within each of those plots, we designated five, randomly located, 1 × 1 m subplots, in order to survey the lower stratum (total height > 30 cm and DBH < 15 cm). In the upper stratum, we sampled 1429 trees and shrubs, belonging to 134 species, 93 genera, and 47 families. In the lower stratum, we sampled 758 trees and shrubs, belonging to 93 species, 66 genera, and 39 families. In our floristic and phytosociological surveys, we recorded 177 species, belonging to 106 genera and 52 families. The Shannon Diversity Index was 4.12 and 3.5 for the upper and lower strata, respectively. Cluster analysis indicated that nearby forest formations had the strongest floristic influence on the study area, which was therefore distinct from other mixed rain forests in southern Brazil and in the Serra da Mantiqueira mountain range.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as relações ecológicas entre diferentes estratos de uma área restaurada, em Viçosa-MG. Realizou-se o levantamento florístico do estrato arbóreo, da regeneração natural e do banco de sementes do solo. Comparou-se a composição florística entre os estratos da área restaurada (arbóreo, regeneração, banco de sementes) e entre estes e diversos fragmentos florestais no município, por meio de análise de agrupamento. Comparou-se, pelo teste ANOVA, a classe sucessional e a síndrome de dispersão entre os estratos da área restaurada. O dendrograma obtido distinguiu o banco de sementes dos demais estratos. Não houve similaridade entre a área estudada e os fragmentos florestais em Viçosa. Na distribuição por classe sucessional e síndrome de dispersão, houve diferença significativa entre o banco de sementes e os demais estratos da área restaurada. Os resultados evidenciaram a discrepância da florística do banco de sementes frente aos demais estratos, demonstrando que a área restaurada se encontra em estádio de sucessão mais avançado.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the ecological relationships between different layers of a restored area in Viçosa, State of Minas Gerais. A floristic survey of the tree layer, natural regeneration and soil seed bank was carried out. The floristic composition between layers of the restored area (tree layer, regeneration and seed bank) was compared, and this composition was also compared to various forest fragments in the area; the comparisons were made through cluster analysis. The successional class and dispersion syndrome between layers of the restored area were compared by analysis of variance (ANOVA). The dendrogram obtained distinguished the seed bank of the other layers. There was no similarity between the area studied and the forest fragments in Viçosa. In the distribution by successional class and dispersal syndrome, there was significant difference between the seed bank and other layers of the restored area. Results evinced the discrepancy of the seed bank floristic compared to other layers of the forest, proving that the forest area is in a headmost stage of succession.

Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o estrato arbustivo-arbóreo de uma floresta restaurada por meio de plantio, após 40 anos de sua implantação, no Município de Viçosa, MG. Foram alocadas na área total de 1 ha 16 parcelas contíguas de 25 x 25 m para avaliação do estrato arbustivo-arbóreo, registrando todos os indivíduos com CAP >15 cm. Também se realizou a classificação quanto à classe sucessional e à síndrome de dispersão, bem como a análise física e química do solo da floresta restaurada. Registraram-se 1.432 indivíduos, 112 espécies e 36 famílias, sendo 95 espécies nativas e 16 exóticas, com maior VI para espécie Guarea guidonia e família Fabaceae, alta diversidade (H'=3,51) e baixa dominância ecológica (J'=0,743), maior porcentagem da classe sucessional secundária inicial, em nível de espécie (34,82%), e de secundária tardia, em nível de indivíduos (34,29%), e predomínio de síndrome de dispersão zoocórica. A área basal foi de 47,8 m²/ha e a altura média de 10,6 m, variando de 2,2 m a 27,2 m. A camada de 0-20 cm do solo apresentou média saturação de bases (V = 43,40%) e a camada de 20-40 cm baixa saturação de bases (V = 34,70%), com densidades do solo (1,08 e 1,07 kg/m³) dentro da faixa ideal para solos com textura argilosa. A floresta restaurada, após 40 anos, alcançou patamar semelhante às Florestas Estacionais Semideciduais, em estádio avançado de sucessão, da região de Viçosa, MG, em termos dos parâmetros fitossociológicos no estrato arbustivo-arbóreo.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the woody shrub layer of a restored forest through planting after 40 years of its implementation, in Viçosa, MG. It was allocated in the total area of one hectare, 16 contiguous plots of 25 x 25 m to assess the woody shrub layer, recording all individuals with PBH > 15 cm.It was recorded 1,432 individuals, 112 species and 36 families, of which 95 were native and 16 were exotic species, with higher Importance Value for Guarea guidonia and Fabaceae family, high diversity (H'= 3.51) and low ecological dominance (J'= 0.743), higher percentage of early secondary successional class at the species level (34.82%), and late secondary at the level of individuals (34.29%), and predominance of syndrome of seed dispersal by animals. The basal area was 47.8 m²/ha and the average height of 10.6 m, ranging from 2.2 m to 27.2 m. The 0-20 cm layer soil had a an average base saturation (V = 43.40%) and 20-40 cm layer of low base saturation (V = 34.70%), with soil density (1.08 and 1.07 kg / m³) within the ideal range for clay soils. The restored forest after 40 years reached a level similar to semideciduous seasonal forests in advanced stages of succession, in Viçosa, MG, in terms of phytosociological parameters.
